Spring has officially arrived in Ellicottville as the Holiday Valley golf course has opened and preparations for many other summer attractions soon to open are underway.

A visit in the “Green Season” gives visitors a chance to get out of the city and relax in the fresh air and uncrowded hills around Ellicottville.

Visitors can golf the Double Black Diamond Course with 18 challenging and scenic holes; climb at Sky High Adventure Park opening May 3; zip down the mountain on the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster opening May 17; cool off and relax at the pools, Cabana Bar and Game Deck opening May 25; and mountain bike and hike the trails at the resort and in the state forest.

There’s so much to do at Holiday Valley and in the surrounding area. The walkable village is chock full of eclectic shopping, dining and fun. The Gazebo

Successful berry growing presentation April 30

The Cattaraugus County Dept. of Economic Development, Planning, and Tourism continues its Speaker Series on April 30 with Growing Berries 101.

Nicole Kubiczki, a soil conservationist with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and a certified crop advisor, will discuss the kinds of soils that are best for berry growing, as well as soil management practices.

This presentation is valuable to all gardeners interested to know more about managing the soil. Learn what your plants need to grow well and to provide a bountiful crop year after year.

Ellicottville equestrian headed to national horse-riding competition

Mallory Little, a high school student at Ellicottville Central School, has literally been riding horses all of her life.

Her grandfather, Jim Little, of the Crosspatch Ranch in Little Valley, took her for her first ride when she was less than a week old.

After years of practice and competition, Mallory, 15, will now compete in the National Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) competition to be held June 15 and 16 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, Okla. Mallory rides a the Varsity Intermediate Level.

Mallory began weekly practice and lessons in horsemanship and reining in September 2018 at Homestead Stables in Gerry, with coaches Heater Payne and Breanna Gibson. Her team name is Western New York Equestrian and is in Zone 1 Region 2 of the IEA. During the regular season shows, she earned enough points to qualify for regional competitions held at the Houghton College Equestrian Center, finishing the season sixth in the region for horsemanship.

At regional competitions, she had to place in the top three and after achieving third place in reining, she qualified for semifinals at the Ohio State Fair Grounds in Columbus.

Mallory went on to place sixth in the semi-final competitions April 14, which qualifies her for the National competitions.

Mallory’s proud parents are Michelle (Kirk A. Liskow) Little and Jess Little. Her grandparents are Jim and Dolly Little of the Crosspatch Ranch.

her subject, it is evident that she appreciated and understood the nature that surrounded her.

Many of her landscapes were painted on site in the environs near her home in Holland, NY. With a broad treatment and ample strokes her work presents a balance between painterly spontaneity and impressionistic detail.

Bruce Allen Blair is a Western New York artist known for his landscape paintings in watercolor and acrylic. Blair studied at the Art Institute of Boston, Mass., from 1970-73, and also with his father. His career mainly focused on the Western New York area and his first solo show was held in 1971 in Springville.

He continued to exhibit extensively throughout the 1970s and ‘80s in and around the Western New

York region as well as participating in various national exhibitions in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wyoming and Arizona. He has won numerous awards for his work and is a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists.

WNY artists from the Bruce Allen Blair Collection

Local artist and art collector Bruce Allen Blair has a large variety of work from his personal collection on exhibit at The Harold L. Olmsted Gallery until June 1.

The exhibit features WNY artists and work from members of his family. Both of Blair’s parents were well-known area artists.

“Collecting art has been a passion of mine since the 1970s. I have been especially intrigued with the quality and versatility of the artists of our region,” Blair.

Bruce’s father, Robert Noel Blair, was a prolific Western New York artist, painter, sculptor, printmaker and teacher.

He is best known for his rural life, desert landscapes and World War II scenes. He has painted throughout Western New York, Maine, Vermont, the American Southwest, Belgium, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Ireland and the Virgin Islands.

His paintings are noted for their range of color, fluidity and movement.

He is nationally known for his watercolors, but also worked in oils, pen and ink, sculpture, acrylics and drawing.

Bruce’s mother, Jeanette Ann Blair, was a watercolorist who devoted herself to painting fresh unspoiled landscapes.

Nannen Arboretum seeking volunteers for cleanup

The Nannen Arboretum Society is seeking volunteers to help clean up its grounds following the months of snow and wind.

Clean up days have been scheduled for Thursday, May 9; Saturday, May 18; and Monday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

In case of rain or snow, the cleanup days will be rescheduled.

Volunteers are asked to dress appropriately for the weather and bring their favorite pruning tool if possible.

In addition, the Nannen Arboretum Society and volunteers have regular work days every Monday

for the horses and equipment.

Since the horse is new to the rider, the scores are based upon horsemanship and equitation. The IEA set guidelines to allow for the unique format of riding an unfamiliar horse.

The IEA is an affiliate of the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) and the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.

Allegany State Park to host Classic Car Cruise-In events

Owners of classic cars will have the opportunity this summer to show off their vehicles in the fourth annual Allegany State Park Classic Car Cruise-In. For classic car owners, this is a perfect place to show off your vehicle.

Women’s Day Retreat, Aug. 3 If you attended last year’s inaugural event, you’re very likely like the organizers: anxiously awaiting this year’s return of Women’s Day Retreat on Aug. 3. This second annual event is organized

Ellicottville area to expect normal summer, weather predictors say

From the for-what-it’s-worth category: A pair of long-term forecasts indicate that the Ellicottville area and most of Western New York are likely to have “near or slightly above average” temperatures this summer.

With all the festivals and activities planned for the upcoming months, that’s good news.

Meanwhile, the Northeast as a whole, including Upstate New York just to the east, is likely to have a warmer-than-normal summer. Most of the Midwest is expected to be cooler than normal.

The Weather Channel and the Climate Prediction Center, the long-range forecasting arm of the National Weather Service, both said a warm summer is likely in store for the East and West coasts.

“Summer temperatures will be hotter than average on both U.S. coasts and cooler in the central part of the country,” the Weather Channel said. The climate center gave a similar forecast.

Both forecasts look at the overall pattern of June, July and August. Those months can be warmer than normal as a whole, but still have cool periods or even a cool month.

The Weather Channel and climate center agree that a weak El Nino drives the summer weather. The climate center said El Nino has a 65 percent chance of sticking around through the summer. El Nino is an abnormal warming of the eastern Pacific Ocean along the equator, and it can influence weather patterns for all of North America.

El Nino isn’t the only factor influencing the national summer forecast, though. The Upper Midwest and Plains are expected to be cooler than normal in part because of flooding rain that fell the past two months.

Saturated soil lowers air temperatures.

In addition, the amount of sea ice along the western Alaska coast is below normal, which will help warm the Pacific Northwest.

ECS students’ holiday traditions

Whether termed Holy Egg Day, Resurrection Day or the long-anticipated end of Lent, Easter is a moveable Christian holiday loved by all sorts of believers.

Despite its religious affiliations, the date of the illusive feast is determined by something rather scientific. Easter, strangely, is celebrated on the first Sunday following the full Moon that occurs on or after the spring solstice.

Over the centuries, Easter has evolved into something much more than commemorating the death and reappearance of a certain prominent religious figure — Easter is now a day of eggs, chocolate and games.

Whether pious or not, families all across the area find ways to bring the joy of a pastel-washed Easter to their young ones. Here in Ellicottville, traditions vary from door to door.

“Some families have Christmas or Halloween, but Easter is our best holiday,” says Lindsay Swalcy, an Ellicottville Central sophomore. “Every Easter, our baskets our hidden, and we have to wait until all of our siblings are up before we can find them.”

If her someone accidentally finds someone else’s basket on our hunt, Lindsay said absolutely no one can say a word. They can only dig into their baskets when everyone finds theirs.

“My sister, brother and I have made it a tradition to give whatever we didn’t want to our oldest sister,” she said. “She used to like to eat all…not so much anymore.

Now that I’m older, I can hide a basket for my mom, too.”

Megan Hartsell, an ECS junior, has a similar story.

“Every year, I find my Easter basket like clockwork, hidden in plain sight behind the recliner,” she says. “Then we go to church and have a nice, relaxing day.”

My own mother, who grew up in England, had completely different Easter traditions as a girl.

“My grandma used to make us snow houses,” she said. “She used old cardboard boxes and fashioned a roof out of extra cardboard and cotton balls.

Inside, there was always one big chocolate egg, little chocolates and hands-on activities to do, too.

“That’s why I always made your baskets with coloring books and crayons,” she added, smiling.

Some families celebrate Easter with a big family gettogether. Abby Sonnenberg, an ECS senior, and her family enjoy this tradition, inviting family members from across the state to partake in the yearly feast.

Many Lent-practicing Catholics welcome the end of a 40-day fast from their favorite food item or activity.

Some abstinences included fried foods, red meat and, a strange one, chocolate milk.

Other families have nothing to do with Easter at all, instead choosing to celebrate the local Polish tradition of Dyngus Day, another day of feasting and joy. Pierogies, polish sausage and sauerkraut are relished all across the Western New York area.

This year, Earth Day happened to fall alongside Dyngus Day on Monday, April 22. With many choosing to celebrate all three holidays, this April provided for a veritable trifecta of happiness, hearth and home.

Low on varsity playing experience entering the year, Matt Finn sounds patient about his Ellicottville varsity softball team.

Maybe that patience paid off before weather and spring break gave the team a few weeks off from game action. After an 0-3 star, the Eagles have won three of their last four games, the latest by a 7-1 margin against Franklinville on April 10.

In describing his team entering the season, Finn said they’re not necessarily young, but “inexperienced on the field.”

“I only have a couple of returning starters, my pitcher is a sophomore so that’s something that makes you nervous going into the season,” Finn said. “But some positional players like Cece Maybee, the catcher, she played for us last year, Linnea’s been with us a few years now, Makenna Smith started for us last year, and Cam Earley. So we had some solid players, it was just filling in the other spots like second base and the outfield is all brand new.

As far as initial stuff, it was game experience, it was going to depend on how quickly we get used to that.”

Smith plays shortstop, Jimerson first base, Maybee catcher and Earley moved from third base to center field.

“Our defense has really kicked it in, a lot less mental errors and a lot, lot less physical errors,” Finn said. “We’re just making the routine plays we’re supposed to be making and really focused on the ball that’s coming to us better.”

West Valley receives blue ribbon at Waste Management symposia CH2MHILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV), the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management’s West Valley Demonstration Project cleanup contractor, received a Blue Ribbon for its Professional Poster Session on OpenAir Demolition Air Monitoring at this year’s Waste Management Symposia.

The Environmental Protection Agencyapproved alternative method for emission estimation was used at the West Valley Demonstration Project during the demolition of its Vitrification Facility, which was completed on Sept. 20, 2018.

Air monitors set up around the perimeter and inside the demolition area were successfully used to track and record air data to protect the health and

safety of employees, the general public and the environment.

All worksite and perimeter air sample results were below regulatory limits and compliant with the requirements in the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants and the Occupational Radiation Protection Regulations (10 CFR 835).

CHBWV Regulatory Strategy Vice President Janice Williams presented the informational poster on her department’s research, planning and implementation efforts for open-air demolition monitoring at the WVDP site.

Williams’ department, along with subject matter experts and cross-disciplinary team members, developed this innovative monitoring

approach from extensive modeling, historical best practices and lessons learned.

This year’s Waste Management Symposia, which also marked the 30th anniversary of Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management, featured exhibits, panel discussions, videos, presentations and poster sessions.

“This was a team effort that involved several months of planning,” Williams said. “I’m proud of this accomplishment on behalf of the WVDP Team. We are committed to performing our work in a safe and environmentally sound manner by implementing safe, innovative and regulatory compliant cleanup practices in everything we do.”

County summer youth employment opportunities available The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services is ready to help area youth find summer jobs through the Summer Youth Employment Program.

Last year, the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services staff assisted 179 area youth from communities across Cattaraugus County.

Spruce Lake at the top of Holiday Valley is a moderate hike up from Sky High Adventure Park. Guided standup Paddleboarding kayaking and fly fishing are offered at Spruce Lake on weekends through Adventure Bound on the Fly. There are 35-plus miles of mountain bike cross country singletrack in the state forest adjacent to Holiday Valley that has been rated “Epic” by IMBA. Holiday Valley has a fleet of non-motorized and e-bikes for rent to use on a one-mile moderate uphill and two-mile downhill flow trail. The road biking on the rolling terrain and quiet country roads surrounding Ellicottville is fun and challenging.

Gooseneck Hill Waterfowl Sanctuary, the largest covered waterfowl sanctuary in the United States, is holding its annual fundraiser, Taste of the Southtowns, on Sunday, April 28 from noon to 5 p.m. inside the St. Aloysius Hall, 190 Franklin St., Springville.

There will be over 45 food items served by eight local restaurants: Chanderson’s, Colden Market & Café, Colden Mill Restaurant, Fiesta Bamba, 49 Coffee House & Eatery, Jake & the Fatman, The Legacy and The Woods At Bear Creek.

Food prices range from $2 to $5 and include pulled beef, pork, chicken, seafood, appetizers, desserts, soups, salads and more.

In July and August, the Griffis Sculpture Park will host free outdoor activities every Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. The free art and nature-based activities are geared to children and adults of all ages.
