Chute Fest wraps up ski season at Holiday Valley

It’s time to put away the skis in Ellicottville and get out the golf clubs.

Holiday Valley officially closed its slopes and ended this year’s ski season April 7, but the golf course was opened the same weekend on April 6.

Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at the resort, said people were able to ski and golf the same weekend.

Town of Ellicottville Supervisor Matt McAndrew and Village of Ellicottville Mayor John Burrell will make a proclamation declaring April 26 as Arbor Day in Ellicottville.

An Arbor Day tree will be planted

by the Nannen Arboretum Society and the Tree City USA flag will be raised.

Guests will also hear from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) representative Dave Paradowski regarding diseases and pests of trees.

Pierce had three of the team’s five hits in a 12-2 loss to the Panthers.

According to maxpreps.com, Pierce is hitting .467 (7-for-15) in five games so far this season for the Eagles (1-4).

Ellicottville Lions Club looking for new members

The Ellicottville Lions Club has been servicing the Ellicottville and surrounding areas for many years, providing eyeglasses, hearing aids, Christmas gifts for the shut-ins, a poster contest for students, donations for the food pantry and refurbishing the benches in the village, just to mention a few projects.

April is membership month for Lions Club, and the Ellicottville club is looking for serviceminded individuals to help continue to best

serve the community.

Currently, all Ellicottville Lions Club members live outside the Ellicottville area, so they are looking people working or living in Ellicottville to better help find the needs of the community.

Anyone interested in servicing the community is invited to come to the May meeting and learn more about our Lions Club.

Ellicottville Planning Board approves work for two residences

The April meeting of the Ellicottville Village Planning Board opened with a public hearing on 45 Elizabeth St., a single family residence.

The applicant is applying to demolish the current accessory barn as it is dilapidated and beyond repair. In its place it will rebuild a functioning garage.

They also plan on demolishing part of the principle home building and intend on replacing it.

The changes that were requested in March were made on the new plans. This included changing the windows to double hung, moving the one dormer back on the roof and developing a drainage plan. All setbacks, open space and floor to area ratio requirements are met.

Regarding the drainage plan the applicant consulted with the village engineer and has yet to send the plan for approval. There were no members of the public in attendance to comment and no correspondences were received regarding the project.

The board ultimately approved the site plan and architectural design review for 45 Elizabeth St. with the following condition, that the building permit not be issued by the Code Enforcement Officer until the drainage plan has been approved by

the village engineer.

The board also approved declaring this a Type 2 Action under the State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR).

Next was a public hearing on 28 Fillmore Drive, a single family residence to be built.

This home is the corner lot on Fillmore and Parkside drives and will face on Parkside Drive with the address of 25 Parkside Drive after the project is complete. This will be located in the Medium Density District.

IN NEW BUSINESS, Bike & Bean at 11 Martha St., formerly located on Washington Street, applied for a special use permit and change in use. The building is currently

approved for office use and they would like it changed to retail/ commercial.

The business owners will be converting the space to continue to run the business that has become a village favorite. The site plan does not need to be approved because there are no exterior modifications or additions to the space.

There is one minor issue from the 2016 approved site plan regarding three parking spots, but the board said they would look into with the Code Enforcement Office and is not a concern of the applicant but the owner of the building.

The application was deemed complete and there was a motion to set a public hearing for May 14 at 5:30 p.m.

There was also an application for a single family residence in the new Fillmore development at 10 Fillmore Drive. This is in the Medium Density District.

For now, only the front nine along Route 219 is open because they are waiting for the snow to melt on the back nine. She said the crew is currently grooming the slopes by pushing and spreading the snow around to get it to melt faster.

“Sunday (April 7) was a beautiful, sunny day and a really great day to close the season,” she said. “We had three lifts open and about 20 slopes.”

According to Eshbaugh, there was a party at Yodler Lodge and also the Chute Fest at the Chute Lift where there are a lot of moguls. She said the fest is a really fun event and kind of like a grass-roots party where everybody joins a lot of local guys and set up tents on the road, then have a big party in celebration of the season.

“The fest is a tradition, but Holiday Valley doesn’t actually put it on,” she said. “It’s sort of word-ofmouth where people get together and all showup.

But, we did open the lifts for them.”

For the first time, Holiday Valley hosted the 2019 Hole Shot NorAm Cross Tour March 14 and 15. The resort also hosted the 2019 Revolution Tour SBX/SX event March 17, for the third time.

Eshbaugh said the high-end NorAm Cross competition is a snowboard event where four people start at the same time and go through a course to try to be the first one down. She said there are different levels of competitors from local and regional — all the way up through World Cup level, like people who would be in the Olympics.

The other snowboarding competition was the Parallel Giant Slalom, which was also at the NorAm level. Eshbaugh said there were two race courses set with gates.

In this race, the competitors are side-byside, so they both start at the same time on their own course and try to be the first across the finish line. She said people from all over the world came to Holiday Valley to compete in that event, as well.

A new event called the King of the Mountain Dog competition was added to the Pond Skimming party this year and was held at the base of Yodeler.

Eshbaugh said friendly dogs of all shapes and sizes, along with their owners, were invited to come and participate or just watch the event that supports the Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS). Amateur dogs competed in a timed obstacle course, a buried treasure hunt and then showed off their best trick.

Eshbaugh said one of the biggest projects they completed this past year was the addition of new snowmaking guns. She said they bought some on their own, but then there was a New York State program where they were able to purchase additional snow guns to replace some older guns with more energy-efficient guns.

She said they came in this winter and were installed during the winter season.

According to Eshbaugh, it was a good year for Holiday Valley and better than their five-year average. She said the resort briefly opened its 61st ski season on Nov. 23, 2018, and was also open the next day before taking a few days off, then reopening for the whole season on Nov. 29.

“We [Holiday Valley] had 132 days of skiing and about 190 inches of natural snow, which is about 10 inches more than average,” she said. “With the natural snow, we had a lot of weather cycles, so 190 inches didn’t just accumulate over the whole season. It comes and goes, then gets packed down.

“We made 1,412 acrefeet of manmade snow so, if it were spread out, it would be like 1,412 acres covered with onefoot of snow,” Eshbaugh continued. “It’s the second highest amount of manmade snow that we’ve had in our history, and it was on top of a good amount of natural snow.”

According to Eshbaugh, several records were broken this year at Holiday Valley.

She said they had a record-breaking 55 inches of natural snow in November and, because the skiing was so great, a record number of visitors came that month, as well.

Another record was set because the resort saw more first-time skiers and snowboarders this year than ever before. They also had a record year at the tubing park.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS ECS celebrates recent spring successes

District Superintendent Bob Miller outlined the progress being made on Ellicottville Central School’s Emergency Capital Project during the regular Board of Education meeting April 9.

Due to flooding in the elementary school last October, many classrooms had to be evacuated and learning was halted. Now, after testing for a moisture barrier under the concrete of the elementary basement, the affected area will be re-tiled.

“It is moving along,” Miller said. “Once they start on the tile, it moves pretty quickly.”

The work will begin in May with specialists installing the tile after school hours, he said.

Additionally, the State Aid Recap was released, and Ellicottville Central School is set to receive $21, 098.

Aid-wise, the next closest district to Ellicottville in Cattaraugus County receives approximately $60,000 more.

Despite this Ellicottville having to raise much of its own funding, the district continues to excel in academics, a fact of which Miller said he is very proud of.

As is the case in April, a lot of tax changes are occurring on the education front in New York state. Among these, the tax cap is pushing to be made permanent. As well as that, the Teachers’ Retirement System reserve went through, allowing it stay in place.

The STAR exemption, a state rebate on certain facets of school costs, will be explained in further detail by the superintendent in a forthcoming school newsletter. The district was approved to change the Board of Cooperative Education Services’ (BOCES) superintendent cap.

This will allow BOCES, both a technical school and special education center, to retain qualified leaders.

The district was also given the go-ahead for the continuation of dual enrollment. This allows high school students to partake in higher level classes while earning college credits.

Private transportation piggybacking with BOCES and other districts such as West Valley is still in effect.

The Tier 6 pension cap is not totally finalized, but there is to be potentially a $71,000 raise.

On the subject of the school budget for the 2019-20 scholastic year, Ellicottville Central School is proposing a basic budget of $13,073,797. This sum is stated on the School District Budget Notice which was approved at the April 9 meeting. The vote will occur in May. Miller also had the opportunity to attend a safety summit at Holiday Valley.

The event highlighted crisis communication planning, including creating templates, interacting with local media stations and turning negatives into positives so as not to alarm the community.

Additionally, a security presentation at the event has opened dialogue for some technological security changes at the school. Miller was most interested in sensors for the bathroom that detect smoke (as in vaping and Juuling). These high-tech sensors will send a text and email to the school principal when triggered. Lights in the gym that go off with alarms are also needed.

On Monday, the Screenagers presentation was attended by 40-50 parents.

“It went very well,” said Miller. “It made a lot of parents think and I was thanked by many at the end of the evening.”

Three hits from Kalib Pierce weren’t enough for the Ellicottville baseball team at Franklinville on Wednesday, April 10, as the Eagles fell to their opponents.

The Panthers won, 12-2, in five innings. Ben Mooney tallied two hits with a double and RBI, and Matt Peters (3), Jake Peters (2) and Nolan Palmatier (2) each drove in multiple runs to power Franklinville.

“The walks were kind of the killer for them,” Franklinville coach Reed Mitrowski said. “We were solid on defense and made plays. And when we got a chance, we had a few timely hits and took advantage of having guys on base.”

Noah Steinbroner, Connor Terwilliger and Jon Yan all doubled for the Franklinville/Ellicottville boys track and field as it won, 83-57, at Randolph on Tuesday.

Steinbroner won the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Terwilliger won the 110 meter hurdles and long jump, and Yan won the 400 meter hurdles and triple jump.

Skyler Wright tripled for Randolph, wining the high jump, shotput and discus.

Christian Reithmiller also won the 800 and 3200 meters for the Cardinals.

F/E improved to 2-0, while Randolph fell to 1-2.

The ECS Dime Carnival is more than a Dime a Dozen

There’s nothing like Ellicottville Central School’s Dime Carnival to welcome an Ellicottville spring.

Hosted at the school April 12, hundreds attended this annual event that’s fun for the whole family.

This year, the carnival spread out over three spaces: the high school cafeteria, gym and the hallway between.

Each room held a variety of games and activities, just enough to fill two hours full of fun.

Sponsored by the PTO and organized by elementary kindergarten teacher Diana Olson, the Dime Carnival has been an ECS tradition for over 20 years.

“The most challenging part is finding volunteers as volunteers are who plan and run all of our events,” she said.

“The PTO and all of its events are 100 percent volunteer ran and operated.”

Unfortunately, Olson said they don’t always have enough volunteers to see ideas through or run the events as they’re supposed to be run. To run the events everyone looks forward to attending — Family Fun Night, Mother Son Dance, Field Day, among others — the PTO needs adult volunteers.

“We are often left to heavily rely on our students, but they are often the same students who are involved in many different activities and therefore aren’t always able to be reliable volunteers,” she explained.

Olson said they are grateful for the volunteers who do donate their time, no matter how small or infrequent as every bit helps.

“Next school year we hope to encourage families to have one adult family member volunteer at each of our events, examples of adult family volunteers being: parents, grandparents, older children,” she said.

If adult family members choose one PTO event, Olson said it would greatly increase their ability to offer events that are more fun and run more efficiently.

Volunteers do not have to attend all or even any meetings to be a volunteer; and being one does not mean working every entire event.

There is also a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ work that takes place, Olson said, such as shopping, creating, collecting, set-up and clean-up to name a few.

“Because the PTO is volunteer run, we are so very thankful to those who have given their time - past and present,” she added. “Our volunteers come in many forms: parents, grandparents, teachers, students, community members. We truly

appreciate all that you do for our school and organization.”

IN THE CAFETERIA, a variety of food items were sold, including cotton candy, popcorn and chips. There were craft tables and the ever-popular Fish Bowl, where real fish prizes were up for grabs.

The Carnival’s favorite Cake Walk was a hit, too. Students and parents walked away with decadent desserts heaped with frosting and sprinkles. It was just enough sugar to get the parents through until the end of the night.

In the adjacent hallway, a veritable spa operation was in full swing. The face painting table was constantly filled.

With both girls and boys getting the typical butterfly on the cheek, it was truly a pleasure to behold.

Behind that, a nail painting studio was getting a lot of business. After getting their nails done, little girls would get their hair braided and detangled by the amateur high school hairdressers that had volunteered for the event.

The high school gym housed the real carnival games, with the perennial favorite Dime Pitch at the center of the action. The constant cling-clang of small change falling into donated cups and mugs added to the symphony of children’s screams echoing in the facility.

In one corner, a beautiful bounce house beckoned all with its turrets and windows. Its constant hum was a reminder that I am now too old to indulge in such a pleasure. Other activities included hula hooping, hockey, golfing and bean bag toss.

Prizes were available for all.

On the gym’s stage lay the most inviting of all prizes: the basket raffle.

Parents and children placed tickers in carefully chosen receptacles in the hopes of winning baskets donated by parents, teachers, and local businesses.

With over 30 baskets to choose, there

were a lot of happy winners that night.

Some highlights included local gift cards, activity sets for children of all ages and food.

Mackenzie Noga, a fifth grader, thoroughly enjoyed the Carnival.

“My favorite part of the night was the cotton candy,” she said, smiling. “…and getting my hair done.” She felt obligated to add this as I brushed her hair.

Daliana Velazquez, also present, agreed that the cotton candy was her favorite part, too. This sentiment seemed to resound with all age-groups in attendance. It is clear that aerated and dyed sugar is always a win…and that fun at the Dime Carnival transcends all ages.

The ECS PTO would like to thank all of the volunteers who made it possible to pull off the 2019 Dime Carnival.

They wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.

Ellicottville Village Board approves abolition of Justice Court in village

The April 15 meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board opened with good news.

A check for $12,792.78 for returned taxes from the county and another check for $19,844.51 from the State Insurance Fund were received by the village.

The recently acquired piece of property at 24 Rockwell St. from the county tax foreclosure has been under a lot of scrutiny by the board in executive sessions the last few months.

Adjoining property owners were present to discuss a deal regarding its purchase. After the property changed hands to the village, officials had the property assessed and surveyed to come to a purchase price. The survey and assessment were paid for upfront by the village in good faith that the land would be purchased.

The owners who have been taking care of the shed while it was in tax foreclosure decided that $35,000 is too much for them to spend. After consideration, they would like to purchase just a small portion of the piece of property now.

The village would like them to pay for the survey and reassessment in good faith along with the original survey and assessment that was already paid for.

The potential buyers feel this is entirely unfair especially since they have been taking care of it for years, even when the land was in tax foreclosure and not owned by the village.

The potential buyers now have offered $2,500 and have been instructed to mark up what portion of the survey they want and the village will discuss further.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the board approved abolishing the Justice Court in the village. Going forward, the court will be shared with the town.

The board also approved a request to use village property for the annual Elisa’s Run for the Art. Funds raised last year helped one artist to have a booth at last year’s Fall Festival and this year will include the Allentown Art Festival. there was a New York State Insurance Fund Review on March 22 that a check was received this month. Mayor John Burrell attended the Local Leaders

Conference at Holiday Valley on April 2 and 3. Also on March 3, he met with Chris Grant from the Department of State regarding funds yet to be received for the Engineering Grant the town and village was awarded to create the T/V Engineering Department.

Village Planner Gary Palumbo was present to discuss the new Micro Cell Policy that was presented to the board for their consideration by the Planning Board. Palumbo advised that the proposed Zoning Code amendments regarding the new short term rental law was complete and ready for public review.

A public hearing was set for May 20 at 6 p.m.

The project that two RIT student groups are working on are nearly complete. They have been tasked at no cost to the town and village to develop a presentation and plans to build a new DPW building. The final presentation is April 25 in Rochester at the university campus.

The intern is out working on a street sign inventory this past month for the GIS database. The DPW is helping with Northrup’s crew to move back one of the back stops. As soon as the ground dries out work will resume.

The last quarterly water readouts the system was metered at 83 percent, meaning only 17 percent of water produced is being lost due to leaks in the system. This is up substantially and a huge improvement to our water line that the mayor said at one point was reading almost on the opposite side of the scale. This great improvement is due to the recent updates to the system and water pump stations and infrastructure.

There were letters received from the Tony Hawk Foundation in support of Brenda and Chris Perks on building a skate park in Ellicottville and from Logan Knab, a Boy Scout working on his Eagle Scout Badge, who would like to use wood already owned by the village to build benches for the park. He would like to plant flowers and do some clean up as well.

The village’s special organizational meeting has been set for May 2.

The next meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board is set for May 20 at 6 p.m. at the Town/Village Hall.

WVDP successfully demolishes former laundry facility

EM and its cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley, LLC (CHBWV) recently completed the demolition of the former Laundry Facility at the West Valley Demonstration Project.

This is the third of seven ancillary support structures to be demolished under the current contract.

How to protect your yard from deer With more than 60 different species of deer worldwide, there’s a good chance individuals will have some sort of interaction with these majestic animals at one point

during their lifetimes.

Deer, which live on all continents except Antarctica, can survive in everything from mountainous areas to wet rainforests to suburban

Many people are excited to see deer in their neighborhoods and yards because they can be such graceful creatures to behold.

However, once deer start to munch on ornamental trees, annuals and flowering shrubs, the novelty of these animals may wear off. Furthermore, deer also can be covered in ticks that spread illnesses like Lyme disease. Here are some tips to keep deer at bay. · Avoid tasty morsels.

Two platinum country artists will headline two nights at this year’s Cattaraugus County Fair.

Rising country hitmaker Morgan Wallen brings his “If I Know Me Tour” to Little Valley Wednesday, July 31.

Special guest Hardy will open for Wallen.

Multi-platinum Nashville recording artist Josh Turner will perform in front of the grandstand on Thursday, Aug. 1. One of the youngest members of the Grand Ole Opry, Turner has garnered multiple Grammy, CMA and ACM nominations.

This year’s county fair runs from July 29 to Aug. 4.

Turner is a disciple of traditional country music and a mentor to up-andcoming artists. He has sold more than 12.5 million CDs. His hits include: “Hometown Girl,” “Would You Go With Me,” “Your Man,” “Time Is Love,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance” and “Long Black Train.”

With his newest project, I Serve A Savior, which debuted at No. 1 atop the Nielsen’s Country Albums chart and No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums Chart.

Native Offerings Farm named Cattaraugus County farmer of the year

A full house of 360 farmers and their neighbors met at the West Valley Fire Hall the night of April 10 to honor Cattaraugus County farmers at the eighth annual FarmerNeighbor Dinner.

The event brought area farmers and their non-farming neighbors — both local and from surrounding areas — together to reflect on the previous year’s achievements and look forward to the future of the local agricultural industry.

Although event speaker Chris Baker, Director of Cattaraugus County Department of Emergency Services, was unable to attend the event due to unforeseen travel issues, event organizer Crystal Abers spoke.

“There are many challenges but there are also opportunities for Cattaraugus County,” Abers said, the reason being “Ag is alive and growing.”

Dinner, which was prepared by the West Valley Fire Department kitchen crew, included items exclusively grown in local venues including beef and pork from Ford Brothers Wholesale Meats in Ashford Hollow, mashed potatoes from WiLean Farm in East Otto and many vegetables like carrot disks and Brussels sprouts from Native Offerings Farm in Little Valley.

The Farmer of the Year award was presented to Stew and Deb Ritchie of Native Offerings. As a history student at Wilford Laurier University in Ontario, Stew Ritchie became aware of his eating habits and developed an interest in organic food

production. Because there were no course offerings in organic farming at the time, he worked for a few years after college on organic farms to learn the trade.

Deb Ritchie used her Environmental Science degree from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry to pursue a career in environmental education, which led her to Grindstone Farm in Pulaski, where her future husband happened to work.

The two married and gradually developed their organic vegetable farm, eventually becoming Native Offerings Farm. The farm was certified Naturally Grown from 2005 to 2015, and in 2015 became certified organic.

Native Offerings also raises rotational grazed beef and, in 2018, began production of industrial hemp with a recently obtained license to grow in New York.

Other candidates honored include Chuck and Phyllis Couture, who received the Friend of Agriculture award for their contributions to agricultural activities in Cattaraugus County since moving to the area in 1968.

Chuck Couture has made contributions as an agriculture teacher and Future Farmers of America (FFA) advisor. Phyllis Couture taught Home Economics and Horticulture at Springville, then opened Fox Valley Flowers with locations in Ellicottville and Salamanca.

The Conservation Farm of the Year award went to Woloszyn Farm in the town of Yorkshire. Woloszyn farm is a dairy farm that utilizes several conservation practices

that strive to mitigate problems such as runoff, nutrient loss and erosion. Despite struggles including a recent barn fire, the farm remains a strong entity in agricultural conservation.

The newly added Pioneer Award was given to Jessica Golley-Halftown, who operates Hi-Y Farm in Little Valley with her family.

In 2017, the crew at Hi-Y Farm became research partners after they applied for and were granted an NYS Hemp Pilot program.

Now in their second year of growing industrial hemp, they are eager to expand the industry in the state.

“We really do welcome other farmers

who want to learn more about the business,” said Golley-Halftown, encouraging farmers to acquire competitive grants for research and development in the area.

“There truly is enough room for everything,” she added.

The event was hosted by the Cattaraugus County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board, along with the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, the Cattaraugus County Farm Bureau, the Cattaraugus County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Southern Tier West Regional Planning and Development Board.
