By Kellen M. Quigley In no time at all the snow will begin to melt and winter sports season in Ellicottville will be over, but don’t fret, as it’s also a place to enjoy outdoor activities all year long.

As the temps continue to rise this spring, the warm, sunny weather will be the perfect backdrop for two annual races coming to Holiday Valley.

On Saturday, May 11, the Happy Half makes its way to Ellicottville once again with the goal to put a smile on each and every face.

The race organizers, who also run the EVL Half and

“Sometimes it is not just about the distance, it is how you get there and what you do after the event,” organizers posted on the Facebook event for the race.

The course will feature fun distractions, and at the end, everyone will enjoy entertainment, great food and beer as part of a great party at Holiday Valley.

The day’s schedule will feature a Half Marathon, 5K and a Beer Mile for those with iron stomachs.

More than 20 veterans of the U.S. military took part last Friday, March 1 in the 15th annual Adaptive Ski Program Day at Holiday Valley.

Volunteers from the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program worked oneon-one with members of the Western New York Veterans Administration Rehabilitation Program on the slopes.

It’s the 30th year for the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program at Holiday Valley, said director Bill Bredenberg.

Mardi Gras food drive for Ellicottville food bank

The Holiday Valley Ski Patrol is again asking for visitors and residents of Ellicottville to help fill the boxes and bags at Tops Market for the Ellicottville food bank.

You might ask, fill box and bags with what?

Any non-perishable food items such as canned food products, pasta, bottled drinks and non-frozen food products in sealed bags are needed. Organizers also need paper products, toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, napkins and cleaning supplies, toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes and hand and face soap.

With those donations, the Ski Patrol can fill many boxes and bags for the food bank to provide to many needy families.

As thanks for your donations, the Ski Patrol is giving out great Mardi Gras beads for your donations. With Mardi Gras celebrations and the parade this weekend, you can’t do it without beads.

Cash donations will also be accepted as those in need often need assistance with heating bills and other services that require a cash payment. So please, “dig a little deeper” so that your gift will help those in need.

Remember, there is the Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday just after 6:30 PM in Downtown Ellicottville. The Ski Patrollers in there red jackets with white crosses will be on both sides of the parade route asking for any final donations and yes a string of beads will be given for your donation. By Sam Wilson The Fredrickson family, and the Ellicottville Eagles, are used to taking home medals from the NYSPHSAA Skiing Championships by now.

Tuesday marked the third consecutive season the Eagles won the state’s high school alpine skiing team championship, this year at Gore Mountain Ski Resort in North Creek. But this time, Logan Fredrickson stood not just ahead of her teammates, but every high school racer in the state over the two-day slalom and giant slalom competition.

On Monday, she won the state’s slalom title, on Tuesday she won the GS and thus earned the state’s combined championship, all program firsts for an Ellicottville racer.

Kelly Fredrickson, father of Logan and her twin sister Hayly and the Eagles’ coach, hoped she could win first this season after two years of placing near the top.

“It’s the goal,” he said.

“I knew she was capable of it. Whether everything worked her way or not was always the variable, but she did very well. She won in the slalom, she

won that by almost five seconds, that’s quite a bit of time, and the GS, she won by almost a second.

“In the GS on Tuesday, the boys and girls run the same course, and Logan would have finished third in the boys.”

Logan placing first, and winning another team championship, made for a proud moment for the father and coach of the sophomore twins.

“I don’t know how to explain it, I couldn’t be prouder of both of them,” the elder Fredrickson said.

“They work hard for what they get and they enjoy it. They work hard and obviously it pays off.”

Ellicottville will continue its season as it competes in the Eastern High School Championships in Attitash, N.H. for the first time.

On Monday, Logan Fredrickson won the slalom by more than four seconds, with a total time of 1:35.66 (runs of :46.66 and :49.00 seconds).

In second was Hannah Klingbiel of Section 2 at 1:38.77. On Tuesday, she won GS by .81 seconds with a total 2:20.41 after two runs (1:08.57, 1:11.84). Samantha Burton from Section 1

was second at 2:21.22.

Logan Fredrickson discussed the state championships in a video posted to the NYSPHSAA Twitter account on Tuesday.

“It feels unreal,” she said, “I didn’t expect to do this well and it’s just incredible. I’m so happy.

“Last year I did better in the GS, but this year I was just trying to stay confident in both,” she added in the video on Tuesday, comparing the two events. “(Monday), I did very well and I was very surprised by that.

So I just tried to keep the same mindset and hopefully do just as well.”

Hayly Fredrickson, meanwhile, was fifth in the slalom (1:43.56) and seventh in GS (2:27.38).

Cece Carls was 29th in GS (2:34.96) and her sister Emmylu 38th (2:41.88). Emmylu Carls was 45th (2:05.84) in slalom.

High winds threatened to cancel or postpone Monday’s slalom runs, but both went on as scheduled.

“They weren’t sure for the slalom if they were going to be able to open the lifts because of the wind,” Kelly Fredrickson said. “So there was some

talk about either they were going to have to cancel that day and try to make it up on Tuesday, but they were able to get one lift running and we were able to get it in. We thought first we’d get one run, might not be able to get the second run in. But we were able to get both runs in.”

But the Eagles handled the conditions well, he said.

“That Monday, Cece was sick, she didn’t feel good so she didn’t race on Monday,” he said.

“But the snow conditions were very good actually, how racers like it anyway, hard-packed, what most people would call ‘icy.’”

The high school state championships only continued a successful weekend for the Fredricksons, who were already in town for the New York State Ski Racing Association state championships at West Mountain and Gore.

“My girls did very well in that too,” Kelly Fredrickson said. “In one race they were first

and second, the next race Logan fell and Hayly was third, and the third race, they were first and third, and Hayly won the overall.

“They’ve been skiing, both of them, very well this year. But it’s trying to manage training and races and events. We’ve been doing different races this year and kind of manage all that and get them to the point where they’re skiing the best they can at this time of year. That’s the challenge.”

Two seats open on Ellicottville Central School Board of Education Nominating petitions for the Ellicottville Central School District Board of Education are now available.

The annual election will be held May 21, to fill the seats currently held by board members Nicole Klein and Robert Van Wicklin.

ECS board revisits graduation requirements

By Louisa Benatovich Student Reporter At the regular Feb. 26 meeting of the Ellicottville Board of Education, Melissa Dahlman, chairwoman of Ellicottville’s Committee of Special Education (CSE), presented at the request of Superintendent Bob Miller to educate the board members as well as the community on the new requirements for the graduation of students with disabilities (SWD).

“The topic is wide and deep in complexity,” Dahlman said.

Along with Regents Diplomas, requiring 65 percent or above on all exams, and local diplomas, requiring at least 55 to 64 percent on all exams, she said Ellicottville Central School (ECS) also offers Career Development and Occupational Credentials (CDOS).

This is a credential certifying that a student is career ready. For those with the highest level of need, there exists a Skills and Achievement Commencement Credential, awarded to only about two percent of kids.

At ECS, 24 credits are required to graduate. Through extensive teamwork and communication, it is Ellicottville’s goal to graduate as many as they can.

For this to occur, Miller said the staff, students and their parents must understand their options.

There are multiple examination pathways a student may take to succeed. There are four ways for a student to receive a diploma without meeting the state-mandated criteria.

Essentially, one must pass a Regents exam in math, science, English and social studies plus one more. At the Regents level, if a student does not pass all, but is very close, they may appeal.

For SWDs, the local diploma is most often the goal. If they are between a 52 to 54 percent on all exams, they may appeal. If they are between a 45 and 54 percent, then it is possible to use “magic math,” Dahlman said, substituting an area of strength for one of weakness.

For example, a passing score of 65 can be swapped for a score of 45 to 54 on science and social studies exams. This is the compensatory option.

Lastly, and most complicatedly, is the superintendent’s determination for students

ECS Quiz Bowl team remains undefeated

It would be hard to call Ellicottville’s Quiz Bowl Team anything less than an institution. Coached for years by Ann Chamberlain, Quiz Bowl has remained a safe haven for fact-lovers and cafeteriadespisers alike.

Held during lunch in her idyllic classroom, the Quiz Bowl team is a tradition that spans decades.

“It’s very chill and relaxing, even if you aren’t participating,” said team member Adam Silvernail, a sophomore. “I enjoy the interactions between everybody. It makes me laugh most of the time. Also, Mrs. Chamberlain buys the food and keeps the cabinet stocked.”

Quiz Bowl co-captain Abby Sonnenberg said she loves the sense of community they’ve been able to create under Mrs. Chamberlain’s guidance.

“Especially when I hear people say that it’s the highlight of their day,” she continued. “Because of this club, I think I’ve become more outgoing as a leader and team member. I am more okay with answering incorrectly because I know now that I can do so in a confidant way.”

“My favorite part about Quiz Bowl is the application of random knowledge to competitions that mean something,” said sophomore Alex Hunt. “Mrs. Chamberlain has been an amazing coach and has done a lot to make all of this possible.”

For me, as a Quiz Bowl member since eighth grade, the club represents growth.

Strangely enough, I found trivia as an incredible stress release. I learned how to become a team member, get over my mistakes and stay in the moment.

Because of Quiz Bowl, I’ve ventured to Washington, D.C., played the license plate game through Maryland and made lifelong friends.

Beating Westfield at the Jamestown Campus, the team then had the opportunity to battle Kane. After another victory, the team — comprised of Hunt, Sonnenberg, Silvernail and myself — remained in the winner’s bracket. It was a jubilant ride to Wendy’s that day.

The High School Bowl, our team’s favorite of the several trivia competitions in the area, is made possible by Dennis Webster, Media One Radio Group personality and High School Bowl organizer.

With Wendy Diamond reading the questions, Webster always makes competitors feel welcome with his fun quips and quick-witted segways. Compiler of questions and master of the radio wave, Dennis broadcasts our competition through the local Jamestown radio station, WJTN. Involved with the Quiz Bowl for many years, Webster has truly made this competition the highlight of our competitive careers.

“The ECS Quiz Bowl Team is having a great run so far at the High School Bowl competition at JCC Jamestown,” said Chamberlain, the beloved team advisor. “It is a well-run competition that is fun for all who participate. It’s nice to see this year’s seniors leading their undefeated team after years of working up through the ranks.”

With lofty goals for this season, our team is striving to divide and conquer.

With additional members Madisyn Kilby, Bryce Butler, Jonathan Hawkins and Caleb Jennings, the team is able to draw from a huge pool of knowledge.

With spring just around the corner, March is a busy month for all things trivia.

Counting down the days until our next competitions on March 23 and 27, we cannot wait to see what this season will bring.

Phillips said winning the E8. “I know the guys have put in a ton of work to get to that point, getting to the playoffs last year and losing by one on the road the way we did, I think really lit a fire under them for this year and I think it was just a lot of gratification from being able to get it done, especially on our home court with all the support we’re getting from the community, it really meant a lot to our guys.”

Bowen said he didn’t imagine an E8 title or a trip to the NCAA Tournament as a freshman when he chose Alfred.

“It’s been unreal,” he said. “It’s definitely been exciting.

“I didn’t even think about it (being a possibility) but we built habits in practice, which led us to winning.”

Since getting to college, Bowen has tried to match the athleticism of quicker opponents.

“Definitely being quicker, more physical, because teams are bigger and faster,” he said.

“The first couple weeks, our assistant coach doesn’t care about matchups so I was just guarding guards, quick guards, and that kind of helped.”

Phillips thinks playing against more players his size has actually benefited Bowen after years of seeing undersized high school squads.

“His biggest adjustment was going against guys his size or bigger, which obviously he didn’t see a lot of,” Phillips said. “He saw a lot of double and tripleteams. He got beat up pretty good in high school, but going against guys the same size, I actually think it helped him because he could kind of feel them with his back.

It wasn’t like he had a 6-foot kid on him, because sometimes that’s tougher for big guys.

“The bigger bodies, he’s responded well to that, and then it’s usually just the physicality and the speed of which your decisions have to be made. So he kind of picked up on that stuff pretty quick and now I think his next step is teams are going to start doubling him and digging down a lot more … being able to handle that.”

quick fix for even the most ingrained workout no-no’s. Check out these five workout habits you should drop.

Not only will ditching these help you lose the pounds, but they will also help you become a more efficient exerciser.

Sports drinks may give you a boost, but are full of sugar and calories. During any given daily workout, hydrating with plain old water should do the trick just fine.

Town of Mansfield expected to receive $300K state grant A $300,000 state grant secured by State Sen. Catherine Young (R-Olean) in last year’s budget is on its way to the Town of Mansfield for construction of a salt barn to protect a nearby trout stream.

“Mansfield is a small community of 800 residents,” Young said.

“This grant will allow them to build a barn to prevent salt from impacting the trout stream while protecting taxpayers from an added burden.”

The Senator stated that securing the funding was a priority because the Mansfield Highway Department provides vital services to the community.

“There is nothing more important than protecting the safety of my constituents,” she said. “Mansfield and the surrounding communities depend on the highway department to do its job and they need and deserve the right equipment and facilities to complete their mission.”

Mansfield Supervisor Robert Keis said Sen. Young looks out for her constituents no matter how small their community.

“We appreciate everything Sen. Young has done for us. This is just proof of how much Cathy cares about her constituents,” he said.

“This is a huge thing

for a small municipality like Mansfield to be able to build a salt barn like this. It will protect the environment while keeping local taxes as low as possible.”

Keis said even though Mansfield is a small community, its department of public works is responsible for keeping 54 miles of road clear of snow and ice in the winter.

“Building this salt barn is something we have needed to do for a while, but it just wasn’t economically feasible,” he added.

“It is tremendous that Senator Young was able to help us with this project. We can’t thank her enough.”

Obituaries Joyce A. O’Neil-Ambuske

Joyce A. O’NeilAmbuske, of Great Valley, passed away Sunday (March 3, 2019) after a long illness, at home, surrounded by her family.

She was born May 1932, in West Valley, to mother, Vera Mathewson and father, William Wallace. She was married in May 1952, to Jack O’Neil, and had three children, Daniel, Timothy and Shawn.

She spent her younger years living in West Valley and Ellicottville.

She graduated from Ellicottville Central

School in 1949.

She started working in the business office at Salamanca Central School in 1966, where she made many lasting friendships, and truly enjoyed her time there. In 1990, she retired from the school, and married Philip Ambuske, on Nov. 3.

Over the next several years, she and Pete split their time, living in both Florida and New York.

She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and especially her greatgrandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Shawn (Denise) O’Neil of Great Valley; step-son, Richard Ambuske of Albany; grandchildren, Trevor (Jenn) O’Neil of Randolph, Ian (Sara) O’Neil of Great Valley, Caitlin O’Neil of Apex, N.C., Corey O’Neil of Kill Buck and Jessica Fish of Brockton; greatgrandchildren, Deklan,

Keirnan, Ayla, Brynn, Allie and Conner; sisters, Thelma Vullo of Kenmore and Jean Freaney of Canfield, Ohio; halfsiblings, John (Jerry) Wallace of Angola and Kathy Thies of Sanford, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sons, Daniel and Timothy; a step-sister, Phyllis Green, and her husband, Pete.

Friends called Tuesday, March 5 at the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca. Funeral services were held Wednesday in the funeral home.

Juanita M. Snider Juanita M. Snider, 89, of Great Valley, passed away Friday (March 1, 2019) at Absolut Care of Allegany.

She was born July 19, 1929, in Humphrey, daughter of the late Floyd and Pauline Wilson Rooks. On Dec. 1, 1957, she married Floyd C. Snider, who predeceased her, in 1999.

Mrs. Snider was a graduate of Hammondsport High School.

Mrs. Snider worked at Burrell Cutlery, in Ellicottville, for 26 years; for the town of Great Valley, as their town clerk for 10 years; and was also a town board member for eight years.

She was a past

member of the Sugartown EUB Church, and the Great Valley United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher, as well as financial secretary, for many years.

Mrs. Snider was currently a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, from whom she received great care from its members, through the years.

She also enjoyed bowling, singing and laughing.

Mrs. Snider is survived by two sons, Gary (Doreen) Snider of Bemus Point and Robert (Priscilla) Snider of Great Valley; two sisters, Jean Dineen and Lois Fish, both of

Great Valley; as well as four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband of 41 years and her parents, she is predeceased by her brother, Robert Rooks.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday (March 8, 2019) at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Ellicottville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. from the church.

Burial will be in Green Cemetery.

Holiday Valley’s Eshbaugh, local officials praise Young as region’s biggest promoter

Cattaraugus County and the rest of the 57th State Senate District are going to miss Sen. Catharine M. Young when she leaves the Senate March 10.

Young announced Thursday, Feb. 28 she was resigning to become director of the AgriTech Center of Excellence for Cornell University.

Not only was Young, a 14-year Senate veteran and former assemblywoman, the region’s biggest promoter, but she could also be counted on to bring home the bacon — meaning state grants, officials said.

Dennis Eshbaugh, the president and general manager at Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville, called Young “probably one of my all-time favorite public officials.”

Eshbaugh worked closely with Young while he was president of the Route 219 Association.

Young has been a tireless supporter of extending the expressway through Cattaraugus County throughout her public career.

“I admired her work ethic and her ability to digest and understand complex problems,” Eshbaugh said, adding she understood the need for economic development and issues that affected communities. “She recognized the importance of infrastructure for rural communities.”

said, “was respectful of opinions from both sides of the aisle. She was a very special representative. We have been well served by her 20 plus years of public service.”

Eshbaugh added: “She’s been the best. I consider her a good friend and a great representative.”

“Cathy has always been a very strong advocate for Cattaraugus County,” said County Administrator Jack Searles on Friday.

“There have been multiple state grants received by the county Public Works Department for different projects and the Youth Bureau has received many grants,” Searles said. “The Department of the Aging has also received grants for Senior Nutrition Program equipment.”

Young, along with Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, R-Gowanda, “has been a strong advocate for the county in terms of legislation for sales and mortgage taxes,” the county administrator said. “They would get expedited in the State Legislature.”

Searles said, “If you had a concern, you could go to Cathy. If you had an idea she would work with you on those items.”

Cathy Mackay, director of the Department of the Aging, said, “(Young) helped my department a lot, and the Veterans Office, too. She certainly will be missed. Her assistance was not tied to any political agenda.

“And she truly cared for senior citizens in the county,” Mackay said.

“She really helped with the new senior wellness and nutrition site in Cattaraugus. Hopefully, whoever succeeds her will continue to look after the needs of seniors.”

Salamanca mayor Michael “Smitty” Smith said, “The world is a better place because Cathy Young has been our senator. She took care of Salamanca. She was one of the few at the state level who cared. She’s been a huge asset for the Southern Tier. We will miss her.”

Another Cattaraugus County mayor, Bill Aiello, of Olean, said Young has been a true champion of her district.

“I don’t know how she does it,” the mayor said. “She makes it to almost every event in the district. … We are very appreciative of what she’s done for Olean. She got money for the stadium, the recreation center and the farmers market. She’s very attentive. She is truly going to be missed.”

Ellicottville schools go into shelter in place, lockout following discovery of threatening note

An Ellicottville Central School District student taken into custody Friday, March 1 after the school went into a shelter in place and lockout has been charged.

On Monday, the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) announced a 13-yearold student had been arrested for “making a terroristic threat.” The suspect had been referred to Cattaraugus County Family Court, according to police.

District officials initially issued the order to go into a lockdown March 1 shortly after becoming aware of a threatening note in the school around 8 a.m.

State troopers immediately responded to the school along with other local law enforcement personnel. About an hour later, authorities shifted to a shelter-in-place order and lockout.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., the security protocols were lifted, the superintendent of the district, Robert Miller, said in a “robocall” to parents of Ellicottville students.

According to a release from state troopers, no immediate credible threat exists.

“The student was taken into custody and charges are pending,” Miller said Friday.

“They are still continuing on with the investigation.”

As part of the shelter-in-place, students stayed inside their classrooms and continued their normal activities with doors locked.

Meanwhile, the lockout secured the perimeter of the building by locking all external doors and denying anyone access.

The state police and its BCI responded to the single-building district after school officials reported the threat. Authorities

at the state police Machias headquarters said they could not discuss the case further because of the ongoing investigation.

In addition to state police, both Ellicottville Police and Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office personnel were at the school.

Miller said both the shelter-in-place and lockout were lifted only after district officials and state police determined the building was secure “because we had been up and down the halls and all the perimeter doors were locked.”

Due to the security measures continuing past lunchtime, Miller said the district was able to serve elementary school students their lunch in the classrooms while maintaining the security of the building.

“Everybody got the same lunch, and it was a pretty simple lunch,” he explained.

“We had law enforcement escort some of the kitchen staff and a couple teachers and went down the halls with a big cart.”

Following the end of serving the younger kids the shelter in place was lifted, Miller said, but the older students had missed their lunch period by about half an hour.

“At that point it was easier to come back to the cafeteria and serve them there,” he said. “It was a little unique, but by that point we determined it was safe.”

Nearly a year ago, the school went into a shelter in place and lockout on Friday, March 23, 2018. Miller said the district had learned from that incident and was better able to handle events Friday.

“When I made the call to the parents … I could share a little more information than last time around,” he said. “But I think we learned from last year and did things a little bit differently this time, and better and smoother.”

Red Cross: Severe shortage of type O blood The American Red Cross has a severe shortage of type O blood and urges type O donors – as well as eligible blood and platelets donors of all blood types – to give now to ensure lifesaving patient care isn’t impacted this winter.

Type O blood is the most in-demand blood type, helping patients facing lifethreatening conditions and emergencies every day. Type O negative blood can be transfused to patients with any blood type and is what emergency room personnel reach for when there’s no time to determine a patient’s blood type. Type O positive blood is also especially needed because it is the most transfused blood type and can be given to Rh-positive patients of any blood type.

Right now, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of most blood types, and blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. Recent snowstorms and severe weather in many parts of the country have forced hundreds of blood drive cancellations, causing more than 20,000 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

Individuals of all blood types – especially type O – are asked to make an appointment to donate blood or platelets by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling

WNY shut out of state’s ag development competition? CROSSWORD ANSWERS Got an idea for a new food product? New York is about to launch a regional business competition that will dangle $3 million in prize money to those who come up with the best ideas for new food or agricultural products.

A slight problem for Western New York ag entrepreneurs, though: Right now, no mention that the competition will be open to other regions in the state.

Grow New York will invite people to explain their ideas in an online application starting this spring, according to a news story in Syracuse.com this week. Twenty applicants will be selected as finalists by summer.

From the finalists, one will be chosen to receive a $1 million grand prize, two will receive $500,000 each and four will receive $250,000 each. The winners will be announced in November.

Details are reportedly still being worked out, but news coverage indicates that only the Finger Lakes, Central New York and Southern Tier regions can take part in the Cuomo administration’s latest round of economic Hunger Games. Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul discussed the competition at a Central New York Regional Economic Development Council meeting in Syracuse on Tuesday.

Alzheimer’s Association program to be held in Ellicottville March 21

The Alzheimer’s Association® Western New York Chapter is planning free educational programs in Ellicottville, Olean and Machias in March.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia will be presented in Olean at noon on Tuesday, March 19. This is a “Lunch-and-Learn” program at Southern Tier Health Care Systems, 150 N. Union St., which will cover the basics about Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

Additionally, the Chapter trains facilitators to lead monthly caregiver

Rodney Carrington to bring hilarious comedy to casino March 9

Laugh the night away with standup comedian, actor and musician Rodney Carrington as he performs at the Seneca Allegany Events Center in Salamanca Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m.

Known for his trademark Texas drawl and black cowboy hat, Carrington’s stand up routine combines comedy with his love of music. Don’t miss his hilarious show for audiences 18 years and older.

Carrington is a multi-talented comedian, actor, singer and writer who has recorded eight major record label comedy albums, collectively selling more than three million copies. He has released three new albums on his own record label, Laughter’s Good Records.

His album of new songs and material, “Laughter’s Good,” debuted at No. 1 on the Overall Comedy Charts. He returned to the studio to record “The Hits,” which also reached No. 1 on the comedy charts.

The Texas-born comedian and musician is famous not only for his albums, “Hangin’ with Rodney,” “Morning Wood,” “Nut Sack,” “King of the Mountains” and “Laughter’s Good,” but also for his ABC sitcom, “Rodney,” and for appearing in the feature film, “Beer for My Horses,” with Toby Keith and Willie Nelson.

He also penned a chart-topping Christmas single, “Camouflage and Christmas Lights,” a tribute to the U.S. military. On his most recently released album, “Here Comes the Truth,” Carrington pokes fun at life in his 40s, modern romance and relationships, gaining weight and much more.

He released his first hardcover book, “Rodney Carrington, Coming Clean,” published by Hatchette Books.

Hueser, of North Tonawanda, said he used to ski, but hadn’t been on the slopes for 20 years. He’s part of a hockey team with the Wounded Warriors and the skiing sounded like a good idea.

“I came so I could help spread the word to other vets,” he said.

His 9-year-old son is also learning to ski, “so this will be a good family activity. It will be a good time for us to be together.”

Brownschidle said she hadn’t skied in 20 years,

either. She said she was interested in some of the adaptive techniques and equipment used in the program.

“It’s fun,” Bredenberg said. “We’ve got plenty of instructors here. There’s no pressure or expectations.

It’s a beautiful day.”

Bredenberg, who has been volunteering for the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program for 18 years said it is very gratifying to see all the smiles on peoples faces the program has generated.

Safety, smiles and teaching people with a wide range of disabilities to ski is the goal, Bredenberg said. The impairment can be visual, developmental, paralysis or other disabilities.

The Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program has 45 volunteer instructors.

“They love to come out for our veterans day,” Bredenberg said.

“Everyone wants to help someone who has served their country.
