Coronavirus changes business and social activities in Ellicottville

By Deb Everts Concerns over COVID-19 (coronavirus) has changed people’s lives and will continue for an undetermined amount of time.

Residents and businesses in Ellicottville felt it in a big way this past weekend when most of the Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival events were canceled due to the virus.

With the weekend events scheduled for March 14 and 15, the health crisis could not have hit at a worse time. Families annually flock to Ellicottville for a good time at this time of year, but they were disappointed to find there would be no parade downtown Saturday night or the costume parade at Holiday Valley Sunday.

The town’s first bicentennial event of the year still took place at Holiday Valley’s main lodge with limited attendance. What little action there was took place at Yodeler slope where the snow bar operated with a limited capacity of 50 percent, and the popular Dummy Downhill was still on.

Holiday Valley Ski Resort posted on its official Facebook page that the event’s schedule had been updated to reflect growing concerns for public safety.

“The health and safety of our community members is and always has been our number one priority at Holiday Valley — never more so than now,” the resort’s post said. “As

The age-old sport of axe throwing is coming to Ellicottville with a new twist. The Ratchet Hatchet will be opening soon at 14 Washington St. where people can experience this hot, new trend.

Co-owners Kaleigh Fleischman and Nathan Woodruff are committed to providing a safe, yet comfortable environment where participants can experience this new version of an old sport.

Fleischman said getting the business from an idea to up and running has been a long road for them, but totally worth it. She said it started out when the two of them visited an axe throwing bar and loved their experience.

Some time after that, Woodruff threw the idea out to her and they ran with it.

Olean General Hospital is “in great shape” with regard to COVID-19, Upper Allegheny Health Systems officials said Tuesday.

No confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus have been reported in Cattaraugus County, Jeff Zewe, president and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System, told reporters.

Seven Cattaraugus County residents have tested negative for the novel coronavirus, while health officials are waiting for the results of 13 other tests.

Confirmed cases in Allegany County and seven in Erie County mean COVID-19 is in the region and it is only a matter of time before it is on the doorstep.

Praise for village employees Dear Editor,

After attending the March 4th 2020 debate with John Burrell and Bill Coolidge, I would like to say something.

The Village Board, all Village Employees, Department of Works, Village Clerk, Village Engineer, Water Department, Building Inspector, Mayor and the Police Department all work so hard, putting in dedication and their time to make Ellicottville what it is today.

As a full-time resident since 1980, kudos to all of you for such an outstanding job that you do for our Village.

Good times ahead at The New Waverly of Otto

A small town with huge community spirit has made it possible for The New Waverly to open any day now. When that happens, residents and other patrons will have a cozy place to gather where they can enjoy good times.

Once the liquor license arrives, owner Barbara Gubala will open the doors to her new bar and restaurant that once housed the Waverly Inn. Over the last six years, friends and family have come together and volunteered to bring the old building back to life.

According to Gubala, they gutted the building upstairs and downstairs.

An incredible 26 tons of old wallpaper, plaster, lath and other debris was removed. The outdated kitchen in the back has been torn off and a 40-by-30-foot addition put on. Three new bathrooms have also been installed, and insulation has been added.

“This place is now well-insulated. Back in the day, they used to say if there were less than six people in the bar room, the beer would freeze,” she said with a laugh.

Gubala said they constructed two private, residential apartments upstairs. The back apartment is larger with cathedral ceilings, a loft, spiral stairs and a cat walk.

The focus of the establishment is the beautiful, L-shaped bar top made from an actual bowling lane from the former Twi-Lite Lanes in Randolph. The Japanese pine, acquired by contractor Roger Tingue, is edged in cherry wood donated by friend, Jim Hardin.

Both the bar area and dining room are graced with a number of beautifully finished larch posts donated by Gubala’s son, Jerry. The tops of the posts are decorated with discarded ropes from the transport boat, “LCU 1680,” that he served on fairly recently while in the United States Navy.

A large, brass bell with an inscription dedicated to veterans hangs on a post in the bar area.

Hardin, who is also a veteran, donated the piece along with other contributions.

“The cats kept getting up in the attic so I finally said, ‘Look piano man, we can’t have the cats in the attic, so leave the door alone — please.’

After that, we didn’t have anymore trouble with the door opening up,” she said.

Behind the bar sits a vintage Bevador, sometimes called a Beerador, that was left in the inn by prior owners.

Brian said refrigeration units like these were used by the Red Cross during World War II to store blood, but they will use it as a “beer fridge.”

Gubala’s sons, Brian, Jerry and Christopher Goldfus, along with daughter, Barb Yocum and grandson Darryn Goldfus all had a huge part in overhauling the building.

Besides family, other volunteers who helped get the place ready for business included Dan and Alice Dankert, Dave Rupp, Doug Yocum, Jim Hardin, Thomas and Jennifer Bradfield, Evonne Schroder, Kevin Burdick, Joe Poccobello, Roger Tingue, Josh Zonner.

ACCORDING TO the “History of Cattaraugus County,” by L.H. Everts, the village of Otto was once known as Waverly.

The historic building that housed the former Waverly Inn dates back to the mid-1800s and, according to Gubala, was probably built about 1850. When they gutted the upstairs, they found newspapers dating back to 1860 stuffed between 2-inch thick planks as insulation.

“The Waverly rented a couple of rooms upstairs during the town’s heyday when people came by train and would stay for the weekend for the nightlife,” she said.

“The town was quite prosperous with three hotels — the Otto Hotel, the Crawford House, and the Waverly Inn.

When the railroad died, the town died. The Waverly Inn was the only surviving hotel of the three.”

Gubala said Alice and Glade Mencer owned the former Waverly Inn for at least 20 years and were famous for their fish fries. When her crew gutted the upstairs, they found a Bible in the attic between the floorboards. In it was a handwritten message to Glade’s sister, Mary Mencer, thanking her for her service and dedication as a nurse in the United States Army during World War II. It was signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt.

“When I contacted Alice about the Bible, she asked if I had noticed the ladder in the attic.

She said there was a plan during Prohibition,” Gubala said. “If the place got raided, everybody ran upstairs to the attic, climbed up that ladder to the trap door and onto the roof, then jumped off onto a barn to get away from the revenuers.”

Mencer also told her about a coffin they found in the attic that had just a straw hat inside. She figures the hat belonged to the piano man who was the last man out in one of the raids. Gubala wanted the ladder left there, so it’s still up in the attic on the original beam, but now there’s a fake trap door.

According to Gubala, several former owners have maintained that the place is haunted.

During renovations, some workers saw an orb on the wall in the dining room. When Gubala first moved in, she’d hear footsteps at night downstairs.

Another time, the water spigot mysteriously turned off and on in the basement four different times while she was

OTTO IS HOME to Gubala. For a while, she had a small farm nearby where she raised her children. Years later, she became a traveling nurse and ended up in New Orleans as a critical care nurse.

“I went for a threemonth assignment and ended up staying for 25 years,” she said. “I was there for Hurricane Katrina in 2005. My house was under fiveand-a-half feet of water.

Brian and a friend rebuilt my house in Metairie, Louisiana.”

When Gubala visited Otto afterward, she discovered that the Waverly was for sale.

Thinking about starting a bar and restaurant business someday, she bought the building with leftover insurance money, in 2007.

Gubala retired from nursing in 2013, then decided to sell her home in New Orleans and move back up north because of her grandchildren.

“I didn’t have any grandchildren when I left and now I have seven,” she said.

Gubala said she’s going to start with pub foods and fish fries, then gradually work up to dinners. Once the business is up and running, she plans to have entertainment including bands and karaoke. She plans to eventually add a deck in the back overlooking the south branch of Cattaraugus Creek.

“All I really want is a nice place that’s clean and friendly. I want it to be a place where people can come and have fun as they eat, play pool and socialize,” she said. “I want to hire local people to try to improve the economy in this area.”

Gubala plans to be open from about 2 p.m. until last call at 2 a.m.

the situation around COVID-19 (coronavirus) continues to evolve at a rapid pace, we have implemented numerous protective measures.”

At that time, New York state placed restrictions on large gatherings, but officials reported that it was not yet clear whether these guidelines applied to ski resorts. In the meantime, Holiday Valley remained open for skiing and riding.

That changed March 17 when the resort closed down its skiing operations at the end of the day because of the virus.

“Closing is not from lack of snow because we still have pretty good snow,” said Jane Eshbaugh, director of marketing. “We are going to re-evaluate the situation in about a week.

Then, we’ll see what the story is and maybe we’ll be able to reopen, but it’s totally up in the air right now.”

According to Eshbaugh, the change of activities began prior to Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival weekend. She said they started getting information from state Governor Andrew Cuomo and Cattaraugus County officials sometime last week.

That’s when they went to 50-percent capacity at the lodges by taking out every other chair at the tables to spread people out more. She said the staff at Holiday Valley is definitely keeping up with the cleaning and disinfecting of its facilities.

“We have people out there all over the place spraying with bleach, wiping up and trying to keep things clean,” she said. “We are emphasizing to our staff to wash their hands and, if they are sick or feeling not well, not to come to work. If they feel uncomfortable coming to work, we suggest they stay home. We are doing what everybody else is doing — trying to obey the recommended edicts.”

Holiday Valley is honoring any requests to cancel ski school, lift tickets and rental reservations. The resort is offering a credit to anyone who has booked lodging with the resort and has decided to change their plans.

“Each case is a little bit different,” Eshbaugh said. “Some people want to come in the summer and some people want to wait until next year, but we are trying to make it

good for everybody.”

Eshbaugh said none of this has been done before and they’re trying to comply with expectations. They are sitting tight to see what happens, and hopefully the whole thing will be over soon.

MEANWHILE, HoliMont Ski Area has been hit hard by the coronavirus as well.

Greg Culver, director of marketing, said March 16 was the resort’s last day of skiing for the season, which is about two weeks earlier than planned.

“This is one of the first times in my history that we’ve had to close because of something other than weather or the season ran out,” he said.

“The thing that stinks for us the most is we are sitting on awesome snow and we could have opened 44 trails today (March 16).”

According to Culver, HoliMont is pretty much closing up and sending people home. He said the resort is now up against lots of refund requests on weekday passes and pre-purchased tickets that they’ve never had to deal with before.

“It was kind of a roller coaster season where we managed to stitch some good weekends together.

Our numbers weren’t what we wanted, but they weren’t horrible and we were kind of hyped that we were able to maintain our snow so well,” he said. “But, now the backlash of this is going to be terrible.”

Staff will have to be let go earlier than anticipated, he said.

They didn’t have a good chance to put on their huge sale at their retail store, which is usually during March break.

Culver said many people are upset because they planned on being at the resort all week and enjoying their stay.

The programs have been canceled, as well as several bands they had scheduled to perform this weekend and the next.

Because of the 50-person limit, the staff can’t plan much. He said it’s difficult to manage how many people are in an area.

In spite of the disappointment of ending the season early, Culver said the staff at HoliMont is excited about some projects they are going to be working on this summer. He said “now they can regroup for next year.”

Jack Reading Memorial Fund to support Holiday Valley Alpine Ski Racing

For hundreds of athletes over the years, “Grandpa Jack” Reading was a constant — an always smiling face and a calming presence — at the top of the hill.

The Holiday Valley Race Team Parents Association (HVRTPA) recently established the Jack Reading Memorial Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation to ensure that ski racing opportunities for years to come remember the influence of Jack Reading and his love for the sport at Holiday Valley.

Alpine ski racing is a commitment for athletes and their families.

Often, the competition fees, travel, equipment, etc. can accumulate to thousands of dollars in one season. The Holiday Valley Race Team has proudly grown racers who have competed successfully and regional national levels.

This fund will provide scholarship stipends for need-based recipients of the Holiday Valley Race Team to assist with various racing costs as well as growth opportunities for athletes and the Holiday Valley Race Team. Jack and Lynne Reading have been a fundamental part of Holiday Valley for decades. Jack started skiing in Ellicottville in the late 1950s and the couple joined the

Ellicottville Ski Club in 1967. This fund will continue to honor Jack’s love for alpine ski racing for years to come.

“Jack was a Training Center favorite. He always had a positive attitude and came to work with a big, heartfelt smile,” said Miguel Azcarate, Holiday Valley Training Center Director. “He genuinely cared about all the athletes…like they were his own.

As our official race starter, his attitude was infectious…not only to the athletes, but his coworkers as well. He was my friend, co-worker and father-in-law. ” Before he was “Grandpa Jack,” Rollin J Reading Jr. was a military veteran who served in the U.S. Army in Schweinfurt and Durchim in Germany.

After his military service, Reading returned to Jamestown and worked in the family-owned business, Quality Markets, Inc. with his grandfather, father and brother. Jack retired as president in 1992.

After retirement, Jack spent time working at Holiday Valley.

For several years, he groomed the slopes and later worked as chair lift attendant. He later served as the head starter for the Holiday Valley racing program, where he officially became known as “Grandpa Jack.”

“As excitement peaked before racers started their run, ‘Grandpa Jack’s’ consistent smile and simple words, ‘racer ready – 3, 2, 1, go,’ boosted the confidence of hundreds of racers, throughout,” said Melissa DeRose, Vice President of the HVRTPA. “On the coldest day at the top

of the hill, ‘Grandpa’ Jack was there; he calmed a lot of nerves and facilitated a lot of smiles. He will be deeply missed.”

Reading believed in the value of the ski racing program, which extends far beyond wins and losses or personal records. “The benefits of joining our team are profound. Athletes gain confidence, technical skills, foster life-long friendships and continue to have fun,” DeRose added. “As our athletes grow through our program, the friendships within our families grow, too. These gains are immeasurable.”

The legacy of Jack Reading extends even far beyond the ski slopes, though.

He also was a fixture at Chautauqua Golf Club and the Woodcrest golf course where he mowed fairways. He was an active community servant, serving on the W.C.A. Hospital Foundation board. He was also a member of the Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club, where he was a past vicecommodore, and the Ellicottville Ski Club board of directors, where he was a past president.

“Our family is pleased to set up this fund at Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation in honor of my husband, Jack,” Lynne Reading added. “It will be an ongoing fund to help support those racers in need of some financial help and promote the sport of skiing to all skiers.”

“Being so young, we struggled from the beginning. Few people took us seriously or some even took advantage of us. But, we have met some very supportive people along the way, and our friends and family have been great support.”

Few people have experienced axe throwing in bars that has been on the rise the past couple of years. The competition has gone from darts to axe throwing where patrons throw axes at a wooden bull’s-eyes mounted on the wall.

Axe-throwing is primarily a group activity that is booked in advance, although walk-ins are accepted when space is available.

Depending on the size of the group, an axe-throwing session generally takes two-anda-half to three hours.

The bar supplies all the equipment, including the axes. To add a competitive angle to the sport, many axe-throwing bars also have leagues.

The spaces where the axe-throwing takes place look like a stall or booth, of sorts, with high ceilings, heavy-duty walls and wire-fencing surrounding targets on the sides and top. On the front wall is a wooden target with a bull’s eye.

Throwers aim at the target and earn points depending on where their axes land.

Fleischman said their coaches and instructors “axeperts” who will be in every lane monitoring and teaching participants the throwing experience.

Both she and Woodruff are trained axe throwers and will use their

experience to fully train their axeperts on the safety protocols, laws, and throwing technique of axe throwing.

Before anyone picks up an axe, participants will be briefed on safety rules and given demonstrations.

Fleischman said although there are three different types of throws, they will be using the overhead throw, which is the safest and performed with two hands on the axe.

According to an article from NBC News, the axes must comply with National Axe Throwing Federation standards. The size, weight and length are all regulated.

Fleischman said axe throwing as a sport goes back several hundred years, and it’s just now becoming a popular thing to do, especially in the bar atmosphere. She doesn’t know exactly how or when the new version of the sport got going.

According to NBC News, axe throwing as a sport isn’t new; in fact, might be one of the oldest sports in existence.

Forbes Media says the first axe-throwing bar in North America is believed to have started in Toronto in 2011 when bartender and actor Matt Wilson opened an indoor arena with axe-throwing and drinks.

Woodruff and Fleischman would like to thank the community for being so patient and understanding during their construction experience. They originally planned on being open in December, but the process has not been smooth or easy.

Fleischman said the business is progressing,

but they are at a standstill due to the coronavirus.

As a result, they cannot and will not release their opening date until they are 100-percent certain it is safe to do so.

“With the recent announcement that all bars and restaurants can only do take out and delivery, we will not be opening until that is lifted. We are unaware of when that will be,” she said. “We know many people are excited to come see us and we cannot wait to share our love for axe throwing with the community.”

In the meantime, people are encouraged to book ahead online to guarantee a time.

Participants must be a minimum age of 18.

Throwing times will vary by group size and availability. Fleischman said they are still working on pricing and shorter sessions. Walkins will be accepted if space is available.

Leagues are planned for the future.

“We are striving for a more relaxed and comfortable environment, hence the ‘lounge.’ The last thing we want to be is a late night drinking scene,” she said. “We are here for people to experience some axe throwing, have a few beers, and enjoy time with each other.”

Junior Alpine Racing comes to an early end

By Caitlin Croft U14/12/10 athletes from the Niagara Frontier Ski Council and Genesee Valley Ski Council gathered at Holiday Valley for the annual Kandahar Festival.

Day one was a Kombi race and Day two was a Giant Slalom. Kombi is a combination of a SL and a GS race, in which racers must be prepared for rhythm changes throughout the course.

Day One U14 Girls: Ruby Wiley of HoliMont took home the bronze medal. Holiday Valley’s Reese Latta finished 4th, Grace Privitera (HV) 5th, Teagan Banyard (HO) 6th, Annabelle Malone (HO) 10th and Eilis Teahen (HO) 14th.

U14 Boys: Holden Bozek (HO) placed 4th, Grant Stephens (HV) 5th, Christian Lisowsky (HO) 12th and Nathan Belza (HO) 13th.

Ellicottville schools face unprecedented closures, threatening spring sports seasons

Monday began a period without high school sports, as schools around the Southern Tier joined the many around the country shut down in an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Schools made preparations for long closures, as students will

learn from home at least into April.

When, or if, schools in the area can reopen safely, resume sports practices and hold a spring season was a mystery to athletic directors.

At Ellicottville, teachers such as Dave McCann, also the ECS athletic director, are taking it “dayby-day” with the help of school administrators.

“They’ve got a lot on their plate right now with figuring out what to do during the closure of schools,” McCann said. “Really, I think athletics have taken a backseat to the safety and wellbeing of the kids in general and making sure we can get this under control. I’ve been communicating with the coaches almost every day, just trying to

give them updates on anything I might see from the state or from the school itself. Right now it’s just wait and see and hopefully this thing gets under control here in the coming weeks and hopefully we can get a spring sports season in.”

McCann said he’s optimistic for the sake of the school’s senior athletes that a solution can be found

Ellicottville’s Smith, Ruiz named first-team East II all-stars

Ellicottville senior guard Makenna Smith and sophomore guard Emilee Ruiz both earned CCAA East II girls basketball firstteam all-star honors.

Salamanca senior Nizhoni Kennedy was named CCAA East II girls basketball MVP, leading postseason honorees recently announced by the league.

Kennedy led the Warriors with 11.1 points per game and averaged 6.4 rebounds. Second-year Salamanca girls basketball coach Bryelle Wallin won the league Coach of the Year award after leading the Warriors to a league title.

Pine Valley and Ellicottville both won the league’s team sportsmanship awards.

Ellicottville’s Rowland, Jimerson named East II boys first-team all-stars

Ellicottville’s Dave McCann was selected as CCAA East II Boys Basketball Coach of the Year and juniors Leif Jimerson and Clayton Rowland made the first-team all-stars.

Jimerson averaged 14.8 points last season and Rowland averaged 11.1 points and 9.5 rebounds.

McCann guided the Eagles to a 17-5 overall record and finished 10-0 in league play. Ellicottville defeated Frewsburg in the Section 6 Class C2 quarterfinals before falling to Holland in the semifinals.

Tyler Robinson of North Collins was selected as Player of the Year. North Collins finished 11-12 overall, but made a run in Section 6 Class D tournament before falling to Sherman in the championship. Franklinville’s Logan Frank and Forestville’s Gavin Christian and Javier West also were first-team all-stars.

“There wouldn’t be a lot of contests affected up to that point,” he said, “but obviously this is going to be a day-to-day situation here and we’ve got to do what’s best for the kids and what’s safe for the kids and the coaches and everyone involved — umpires, fans.”

For the next month, Ellicottville Central School is going to be closed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

All across the world, schools, businesses and even entire countries are shutting down to try and stem the spread of this dangerous disease. Despite its relatively low mortality rate among children and teenagers, the administrators of this school aren’t taking any chances.

I talked to several students about their plans while school is closed.

“I’ll probably work out a bit and work at my job (if they stay open),” Noah Steinbroner responded. “No homework though.” Since I was curious, I asked him what kind of working out he was planning on doing.

“Sprinting for track,” he answered.

Caleb Jennings replied, “Do my homework I guess.

I don’t really know.” Since I wanted something a little more concrete than that, I asked him if he had any

plans that were disrupted by the Coronavirus. “Not really,” he answered.

Bryce Butler said, “I’m going to try to stay away from people so I have the lowest chance possible of catching the virus.” A wise idea indeed. I then asked him if there was anything he wanted to do at home. “Well, there’ll be a bunch of online school work to do, so there’s that. Anything else, I’ll figure it out as I go,” he replied.

Jalee Evans enthusiastically answered, “Get some cleaning done!

And I’ll be making food and baking a lot while doing the inevitable mounds of homework.” Since I wanted to make sure, I asked her what kind of cleaning she was planning on doing. She responded, “Just general sweeping and wiping counters and decluttering the house for my parents while I’m home.”

Due to the Coronavirus, Ellicottville Central is closed for the next month. It seems that many students plan on staying home and doing the homework that results from missing school.

HEALTH & FITNESS: CORONAVIRUS AND THE GYM

By Kim Duke The following is an article that helps to clarify some of the questions related to working out inside a gym/studio during this unprecedented outbreak. These are not my words, but the words of doctors and specialists.

We have always valued the gold standard of cleanliness at our studio and want everyone who participates in training or fitness classes that your health and wellness is our top priority. We understand that there is a great deal of concern about this virus and we are doing everything possible to stay ahead of any news and are taking all necessary precautions.

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak continues,

we’re seeing large public events like conferences, music festivals, and sporting events cancelled or postponed all over the globe. (The Tokyo Olympics are still TBD.) It’s enough to make you wonder if you should be avoiding even smaller public spaces, places like the gym, where you’re sharing equipment and coming in contact with people sweating and medical professor at Stanford, and John Whyte, MD, MPH, the chief medical officer at WebMD, how concerned you actually should be about coronavirus at the gym, when it’s better to stay home, and whether sweat and swapping dumbbells poses any risk.

Is it Safe to go to the Gym During the Coronavirus Outbreak?

“The gym, like other public places, is safe as long as you take precautions,” stated Dr. Whyte. That’s because coronavirus is mostly spread “through direct contract with respiratory droplets,” which are released when you sneeze and cough. It’s less likely (although still

possible) that you’ll get coronavirus by touching a contaminated surface.

In other words, you have less of a chance of picking up the virus by sharing dumbbells and using public machines than by standing near someone who’s sneezing and coughing. “Unless there is a full quarantine in your area, it is probably still OK to go to the gym,” Dr. Whyte said.

“Many gyms are using hospital-grade cleaners to sanitize equipment.”

Call your local facility to see what precautions they’re taking and what their recommendations are for staying home versus hitting the gym.

That said, if you have a chronic medical condition that puts you at high risk of infection, or if you’re the primary caregiver for someone at high risk, Dr. Subramanian recommended staying home. If you personally are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, tiredness, and dry cough, “You need to seek medical care and be tested,” Dr. Whyte said.

The situation may call for you to self-quarantine and avoid coming into contact with other people.

“Do not go to the gym or anywhere else if you have symptoms,” Dr. Whyte advised.

Can You Transmit Coronavirus Through Sweat?

According to Dr. Whyte, there is no evidence that COVID-19 is transmitted through sweat. “It is a respiratory virus, so the lung is where the virus attacks,” he explained.

“Sweat doesn’t contain respiratory droplets, so there’s no current beliefs that sweat is a source of the virus.”

For coronavirus prevention as well as for general hygiene, you should still wipe mats and gym equipment with sanitizing spray or wipes before and after use.

Sweat itself, though, won’t transmit COVID-19. As Dr. Whyte put it, “Despite the fact that there is a lot of sweating going on in the gym, there’s no evidence gyms are not safe.”

Dr. Whyte recommended a few precautions you should take at the gym during the coronavirus outbreak.

Village elections across New York were scheduled to be held Wednesday. Gov. Andrew Cuomo today signed an executive order postponing those until April 28, the day of the presidential primary in New York.

“Our top priority has been keeping New Yorkers safe and

stopping the spread of the novel coronavirus,” Cuomo said in a statement. “Public health officials have been clear that reducing density is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread, and delaying village elections will help ensure poll workers and voters are not potentially exposed to the virus and at the same time maintain integrity in our election system.”

Cuomo has declared a state of emergency and restricted public gatherings in an effort to slow

the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

In Ellicottville, on the ballot were incumbent mayor John Burrell and challenger Bill Coolidge running for a four-year term as mayor.

Two members of the Board of Trustees, Joe DiPasquale and Patra Lowes, are not seeking re-election. Running unopposed for the two open seats are Doug Bush and Ed Imhoff.

Obituary Kathy Norton Born Oct. 21, 1955, in Springville, she was the daughter of the late Ryan and Eileen Button Norton.

Ms. Norton graduated from Ellicottville High School, Class of 1973, and received an associate degree from Jamestown Community College, Jamestown.

She was employed as an office manager with ANR, Ellicottville, and St. Bonaventure University, Allegany.

Ms. Norton enjoyed spending time with her friends and her pets. She also enjoyed bowling in

various leagues.

Surviving are two sisters, Gay (James) Fitzpatrick of Great Valley and Ann (Joe) Tascone of Utica; two brothers, Allen (Ruth) Norton of Little Valley and Donn (Jackie) Norton of Great Valley; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Nan Ullman.

There will be no visitation.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of the family and will be announced.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to EARS or Friends of Strays.

Dr. Subramanian also recommended carrying travel size hand sanitizer so you can quickly clean your hands after using equipment.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. If you need to wipe sweat, use a disposable paper towel and wash your hands afterwards. “You don’t want to be reusing a towel that might have germs,” Dr. Whyte said.

“It’s too easy to put germs back on your face, so best to be prudent.”

Wipe down equipment with sanitizer before and after use.

Sit on a towel.

Take a shower after working out at the gym.

In light of the novel coronavirus outbreak, “one of the ways to effectively fight the virus to be healthy,” Dr. Whyte said. “Being active is one way to do that, along with healthy eating.” In fact, exercise may actually boost your immune system. Still, if you’re feeling anxious about coronavirus, Dr. Whyte noted that you don’t necessarily have to go to the gym to work out.

You can pull up at-home bodyweight workouts or workout videos to exercise right in your living room or garage. The exercise may even boost your mood and relieve some of your anxiety.

It’s also fine and even recommended to walk, run, or exercise outdoors, because you’re not in a closed environment where recirculating air could continuously distribute the virus. As long as your area isn’t under complete quarantine, “it’s actually very safe to be outside in this type of situation,” Dr. Subramanian said.

“It’s a good idea to stay healthy and to exercise as much as possible and being outdoors and getting fresh air is definitely recommended.”

Ellicottville Memorial Library closed through March 31 Due to the State of Emergency issued in Cattaraugus County and the multiple closures of other libraries, schools and other public buildings, the Ellicottville Memorial Library Board of Trustees has decided to close the library through March 31.

At that time, the board will reassess the situation.

This is against our nature, but the library has been presented with a unique situation and we don’t want to encourage vulnerable populations to congregate at the library.

A staff member will be at the library a majority of the time Monday through Friday to answer the phone, and staff are working on ways to still

provide some services.

Seneca Nation suspends operations at gaming facilities over COVID-19

The Seneca Nation Council, in consultation with the Seneca Gaming Corporation, suspended operations at all of the Nation’s gaming facilities, effective at 8 p.m. Monday.

The closing was part of the ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic locally.

The directive applies to the Nation’s three casino resort properties in Niagara Falls, Salamanca, and Buffalo, as well as the Seneca Gaming & Entertainment operations in Irving, Salamanca, and Cuba, according to a press release.

“The COVID-19 outbreak is an unprecedented public safety situation that requires an unprecedented response,” said Seneca Nation President Rickey Armstrong Sr. “Given the number of people who visit and work at our facilities, I believe it is in the best interest to suspend our gaming operations until further notice.

We are keeping the health and safety of our workers, our guests and our communities above all else.”

“As a unified Seneca community, it is incumbent upon each of us to adjust to the ongoing COVID-19 situation and to do everything we can to keep ourselves, our families and our territories safe while the full public response to this situation plays out,” President Armstrong added.

Both hospitals imposed limited visitation policies that went into effect on Monday. Those who are admitted must answer a few questions about their travel history and be scanned for their temperature. The hospitals remain open for operations and medical procedures and therapy, Mills said.

For individuals with coronavirus symptoms like a fever, cough or sore throat — or those with difficulty breathing — Mills urged them to call their physician first. Someone brought in by ambulance will be triaged before being allowed into the emergency room waiting area.

Those with suspected COVID-19 virus will be isolated.

Olean General is not a testing center, Zewe explained. The hospital is getting many calls asking to be tested. Due to a shortage of test kits, only the county health department can authorize testing at this time.

Testing on demand may be available sometime next week, Zewe added.

Currently, testing is available only by those who returned from certain countries where COVID-19 is widespread and those who have been exposed to someone who is infected.

Mills noted that without an antiviral medicine or vaccine to fight the virus, supportive treatment including rest, liquids, Tylenol, staying at home and self-quarantining are called for if someone is infected. The elderly and those with immune deficiencies are most susceptible.

“We are struggling like the rest of the country with supplies,” Mills said.

Most events at Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival were canceled due to the coronavirus, but it didn’t stop many people from showing up to enjoy a few activities that were still on the schedule for the two-day weekend, March 14-15. Everybody’s favorite Dummy Downhill event took place on Sunday afternoon at Yodeler Lodge.
