Winter sports enthusiasts know that this time of year means a whole new set of conditions on the slopes. Since the early 2000s, the annual Pond Skimming event at Holiday Valley has been a great way to welcome the spring skiing season, and this year it returns on Saturday, March 23. This wet and wild event is a great way to take advantage of the rising temps and melting snow. Those in the know wear creative costumes, ski down the hill and skim across an icy cold pond at the bottom. If you’ve never noticed a pond at the bottom of Yodeler, that’s because it’s only there for the pond skimming. It’s created from the huge mound of snow used for the Winter Carnival Snowbar.

An amazing woman has kept business rolling for the town of Great Valley for well over three decades. Supervisor Dan Brown says her work ethic is unsurpassed. She makes everyone better at the office and the town is absolutely better because of her. Hildagarde Krause, who has been the supervisor’s clerk for over 30 years, just celebrated Submitted Photo her 88th birthday March 9. Brown said even the recent bitterly cold temperatures did not keep her away. He said when the town clerk’s office closed due to the weather and they tried to contact her to stay home, Krause had already showed up at work. “The knob was actually froze shut, so she couldn’t get in. After I figured this all out, I called her at home and asked her why she went down there to work that day,” Brown explained. “She said, ‘Because that’s my job’ … Nothing stops, her whether it’s hip surgery,

By Rick Miller Western New York’s Maple Weekends are still a couple of weeks away, but for Sprague’s Maple Farm in Portville, every weekend in March is a maple weekend. Except for the beginning of March, when it was bitterly cold and very windy, owner Randy Sprague said in an interview last

week. March 1–3 is the 2019 maple season’s inaugural weekend at Sprague’s. With warmer temperatures, the sap was sure to be running again last weekend. There’s a maple demonstration area behind the Sprague’s Restaurant on Route 305 where they tap trees and visitors watch maple sap flowing into a storage tank from the maple forests on

the hill. There’s a wagon ride to the sugar shanty on the hill where sap is boiled the old fashioned way over a woodfired evaporator. There’s also a trail and displays of old-time sugaring including how Indians boiled the sap. Inside the sugar shanty, the smell of boiling maple sap and maple donuts permeates the air.

Wash down that maple donut with a cup of hot chocolate. There’s also a taste of maple wine for adults. Except for a couple of days at the end of February, Sprague’s, like most maple producers have been frozen out. It takes daytime temperatures in the 40s and nighttime temperatures in the 20s to get the sap flowing.
