Logan Fredrickson wins slalom, GS, overall state championships For the third consecutive winter, the Ellicottville girls ski team returned from the NYSPHSAA championships with a team title. But this time, the Eagles brought a couple new medals for Logan Fredrickson, crowned the state individual champion in North Creek in both the slalom and giant slalom.

On Tuesday, she made it two-for-two, winning the state GS title by .41 seconds with a total time of 2:20.41 after two runs.

She finished the first run in 1:08.57 and the second in 1:11.84. Samantha Burton from Section 1 was second at 2:21.22.

Logan’s twin sister Hayly Fredrickson was seventh overall in a field of 59 racers at 2:27.38 (1:11.49, 1:15.89). Cece Carls was 29th at 2:34.96 and her sister Emmylu was 38th at 2:41.88.

On Monday, Logan Fredrickson took first in the state in the slalom as part of day one of the alpine ski competition. She won the state championship by more than three seconds, finishing with a total time

of 1:35.66 after runs of :46.66 and :49.00 seconds. In second was Hannah Klingbiel of Section 2 at 1:38.77.

Dolf Boneberger will narrate information of a photo journey from

the countryside of Tanzania.

He will describe the customs of the Masai warriors and discuss animals such as wildebeest, zebra, cape buffalo and others.

Windsong Mobile Mammography coming to Holiday Valley in March

Although early detection of breast cancer is saving lives, many women in the rural areas have difficulty getting to a facility to get the breast cancer screening which makes all the difference.

Fortunately for the many women who live and work in Cattaraugus County, they will have the ability to get screened when Holiday Valley hosts Windsong’s mobile mammography program this March.

Windsong’s mobile mammography unit will partner with the Holiday Valley Wellness Committee and have breast cancer screening available on March 13, 2019, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Holiday Valley Rental Management and Realty Office parking lot across from the Inn at Holiday Valley.

This partnership will provide easy access to breast cancer screening for many women who work and live in the area.

Women are reminded that a doctor’s script is required for the breast cancer screening which is covered by insurance. They are encouraged to schedule their appointment to minimize wait time. Women without insurance are also welcome and are encouraged to call ahead.

According to Dr. Markus Holzhauer, medical director of the mobile unit, the goal of the mobile mammography unit is to

eliminate barriers to this life-saving exam. Early detection of breast cancer, when it is most easily treated, does save lives.

Having Windsong’s mobile breast cancer screening driving early detection eliminates the transportation barriers in underserved communities throughout Western New York.

Women in Allegany, Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Wyoming, Niagara, Orleans and Genesee counties now have access to the high-quality services that Windsong provides. This includes 3D mammography or digital breast tomosynthesis, a state of the art technology that has proven to detect smaller cancers earlier when they are easier to treat.

Allegany State Park’s Full Moon fat bike rides March 22

The Allegany State Park Environmental Education and Recreation Department will be leading another Full Moon Fat Bike Fun Ride on March 22 at the Red House Administration Building.

Check-in begins at 6:30 p.m. in the main lobby with the ride starting at 7.

If you are interested in renting a bike for the evening, please call Loud Performance Products at 386-1171. Bikes are limited.

Bring a helmet, headlight, warm clothes and sense of adventure.

The 5-mile fun ride is for all levels and will last up to 2 hours, depending on the weather. Riders will find themselves exploring new terrain throughout the Red House side of the park.

With the growing popularity of fat bikes, the Recreation Department wanted to give patrons another way to enjoy winter. Fat

tire bikes will also be available for demos during mountain bike tours in the summer.

Fat bikes are the monster trucks of the bike world. With big tires, typically 3.8 inches (97 mm) or wider, they are designed for low pressure to allow riding on soft, unstable terrain, such as snow, sand, bogs and mud.

They have been around since the early 1900s, but it wasn’t until frame builders in both Alaska and Mexico began experimenting with different frames, parts and tire widths in the 1990s that “Fat Bikes” were born.

This is a free event. If there is no snow, any bike is welcome.

Eagles’ rally falls short in Class C-2 semifinal loss to Bennett

Despite a CCAA East II championship and No. 1 seed in its bracket, this Ellicottville boys basketball team mostly did not yet know the growing pains associated with the sectional playoffs.

So while coach Dave McCann’s Eagles made their fourth consecutive trip to Jamestown Community College — and the sectional semifinals — this season, they did so with only two experienced rotation players from the 2018 playoffs. That playoff inexperience showed, McCann admitted, as ECS quickly fell behind against No. 5 Bennett Tuesday night in the Section 6 Class C-2 semifinals, by as much as a 13-point first half deficit.

The Eagles regained some of that league champion and top-seed form in the second half, tying the Tigers 58-58 with 1:26 to play, but Bennett held on for a 63-59 victory.

“Even late in the game, fourth quarter, we come out and miss three or four layups right in a row,” McCann said. “Credit to the kids, they withstood that and they battled, but I think in our last couple minutes there, our execution, you could tell we were a little panicked, kind of throwing the ball around a little bit and a couple of the travel calls. Throughout the course of the game, I think they just got a little too excited and tried to make plays and had some mistakes along the way.”

Bennett advanced to play No. 2 Randolph (17-5) in the C-2 championship, back at JCC on Friday.

Missed layups and turnovers may have plagued the Eagles, but they could have withstood both with some free-throw shooting. Ellicottville shot 15-for-28 from the foul line.

“We’ve been a poor foul-shooting team,” McCann said. “Unfortunately it comes back to bite you in a big game.”

Lamont Pulliam led Bennett (8-10) with 24 points, including an emphatic dunk to put the Tigers ahead 62-59 in the final minute. Davon Scott added 15 points.

“We had way too many turnovers in the first half and we were just a little out of sync, out of sorts and that got us off to a slow start,” McCann said. “But they battled through in the second half and they fought really hard. I give them a lot of credit, keeping that game (close), in the fourth quarter getting it back to a one-point game or a tie game once or twice, withstanding a couple of runs. But at the end of the day, like I just told them, we didn’t execute well enough tonight for four quarters.”

Sophomore Wyatt Chudy led Ellicottville (14-8) with 17 points and seven rebounds while classmate Clayton Rowland had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Ellicottville’s lone senior starter, Steven Rowland, had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Bennett held Leif Jimerson, Ellicottville’s leading scorer at 14 points per game, to four points, on a pair of layups during the Eagles’ rally in the fourth.

“I thought he was rushing some opportunities a little bit and I thought we were getting some other looks off of dribble penetration, off of screen and roll,” McCann said of Jimerson.

“And I think we’ve got to move him to a few different places and he’s got to work to get open a little bit. But overall I think we all kind of struggled in the first half with turnovers and he kind of fell victim to that a little bit too.”

Chudy and Clayton Rowland scored 22 of their combined 32 points in the second half, as both started attacking the basket more.

“I think a little bit of that’s nerves with starting some guys for the first time up here at JCC,” McCann said, “and kind of the moment getting to them a little bit early on and once they settled in, that was a big part of our halftime talk. Once we settled in, they were capable of playing basketball with this team if not at a higher level than this team. But sometimes with young team, it’s getting over that initial hump.”

Ellicottville girls bounced in first round Senior Linnea Jimerson poured in 26 points in what would be her final game, but Ellicottville (11-10) couldn’t come back to beat Cassadaga Valley in an opening-round Section 6 Class C-2 girls basketball playoff game at home.

Cassadaga led by one after the first quarter, but outscored the Eagles 30-13 over the next two quarters

and went on to win 54-44 on Thursday, Feb. 21.

Brooke Repine led Cassadaga Valley (14-7) with 21 points and Kaylee Pattyson had 12 points.

“My girls played really hard,” Ellicottville coach Chelsea Cole said. “They prepped for three days to get ready for this game. I just think we didn’t execute like we should have.”

By Louisa Benatovich Student Reporter In this day and age, it’s very easy for all, especially the younger generation, to fall into the anti-cop rhetoric. Officers are so often demonized on the news that it’s easy to forget all the good that they do.

For a teenager, law enforcement presents a specific set of terrors.

These men and women in blue are the ones who bust parties and pull over newly licensed drivers as they accidentally speed through Humphrey.

These are also the men and women who respond to hysterical teenage girls locked out of their cars in the town of Ellicottville.

Yes, it was more than embarrassing to call 911 at 6:30 p.m. on a Sunday after work.

My car, a lovely 2007 sedan, had lashed out in a fit of petty rage. As I attempted to brush the pre-blizzard snow from my windshield, her door swung shut with my keys inside. The best part: her ignition was already running.

The 911 operator was more than sympathetic to my cause.

“My name is Louisa Benatovich,” I said breathlessly.

A beat. “Do you need me to spell that for you?”

“Yes, please,” she said, almost chuckling. She calmly dealt with my location description peppered with wheezes of hyperventilation.

I looked around. I was alone.

“I’m a minor and I’m cold,” I wheezed anxiously into the phone.

“Someone will be along shortly,” she assured. I thanked her profusely and wished her a good night. I felt like an idiot. I could have just called the local police.

Less than ten minutes later, a policeman pulled up behind my car. The feeling of relief that washed over me is indescribable.

“So you’ve locked yourself out of your car?” he asked kindly.

“Yes,” I said sheepishly. “I don’t know what happened.”

The officer kindly waited while I dug through my purse for my license. My bag, chock full of receipts and pay stubs, was a warzone.

I offered him my passport instead. I was so shaken that I couldn’t even find the identification page.

“I still need your license,” he said. I spent more time digging through my bag. I was cold and my exposed ankles were sucking the blood from my brain. Finally, I found it and signed a liability agreement.

“Would you like to sit in the car or watch?” he asked gently.

Though the police car radiated heat, my curiosity won over.

“What’s the worst that could happen?” I asked.

“Your window could break.”

Awesome.

The officer fetched a wedge, an air-filled sack, and a long pliable rod from his squad car. He straightened the wire by hooking it onto his tire. I was expecting some sort of movie-like action, where he slid the rod down the window and the car magically popped open Instead, he inserted the wedge into the doorframe and use the pumpable sack to enlarge the gap.

He stuck the rod through the gap and angled it towards the driver’s door handle. After several tries, he got it and the door unlocked.

“You’re a saint,” I said, almost emotional. I paused. “Do you like dark chocolate?”

I reached into the back of my car and pulled out an Elmwood Strip Bar, a decadent confection of chocolate, toffee and espresso beans.

“You don’t have to give me anything, I’m just happy to help you,” he said nobly. I forced him to take it and he told me to drive safe.

I have never been more grateful in my life.

This is the kind of world we live in. It is a majority of good, kind people just wanting to help.

With all the rancor emanating from every news source, it is so easy to forget that.

And as the wild winds whipped through the northeast, I was snugly at home, thanking the officer that allowed me to get there.

STAR exemption deadline looms for seniors

An important deadline for seniors in New York state is fast approaching.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance reminds property owners age 65 and over that March 1 is the deadline, in most communities, to apply or reapply to receive the Enhanced STAR exemption in 2019.

A change in 2019 requires Enhanced STAR recipients to enroll in the Income Verification Program (IVP). Those already enrolled in the IVP don’t need to take any action to continue receiving their Enhanced STAR exemption.

In the first year of enrollment, the assessor will verify eligibility based on the income information provided by the homeowner. In subsequent years, the state will automatically verify income eligibility. As a result, homeowners will no longer need to renew the exemption or share income tax returns with their local assessor’s office.

This change applies only to seniors 65 or older applying for the Enhanced STAR exemption, or those who have the exemption included in their property tax bills. This doesn’t affect those who receive a STAR check for this benefit because the Tax Department already verifies their income eligibility.

“Of the 650,000 seniors receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption, roughly 75 percent of them are already enrolled in the IVP,” said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “Once enrolled, property owners will automatically receive their exemption as long as they’re eligible and won’t have to reapply with their assessor.”

IVP program information is now also available in Spanish, Russian, Chinese and other languages and can be accessed under the Resources heading on the Enhanced STAR Income Verification webpage.

Sophia Goldberg (HV) took 4th, Saoirse Teahen (HO) 6th, Eilis Teahen (HO) 7th, Georgia Hewson (HO) 8th and Annabelle Malone (HO) 9th. Isobel Fraser (HV) finished 11th, Haleigh Rittling (HO) 13th, Bridget Byers (HO) 14th and Teagan Banyard (HO) 15th.

This is amazing for being two years younger than the oldest competitors.

This past weekend, U14 athletes travelled to Song Mountain, in Preble, for a Giant Slalom and Slalom. This was a last chance series to qualify for State Championships

and included athletes from the entire state.

Giant Slalom U14 Girls: Holiday Valley’s Halle Stephens was the fastest athlete of the day beating all of the boys and taking home the gold. HoliMont’s Emmylu Carls and Claire Rintoul finished with the silver and bronze medals respectively. Reese Latta (HV) placed 9th.

U14 Boys: Owen Griffith (HV) walked away with the bronze medal.

Slalom U14 Girls: Halle Stephens (HV) secured her spot on the State Team with another gold medal finish. Emmylu Carls (HO) finished 7th, Iris Polly (HV) 8th and Reese Latta (HV) 19th.

Ellicottville Village Planning Board discusses short-term rentals

At the last regular Ellicottville Village Planning Board meeting, there was a preapplication meeting for a project at 45 Elizabeth St. on a single family residence.

The owner intends to demolish the current accessory barn, as it is dilapidated and beyond repair. In its place, the owner would rebuild a functioning garage.

They also plan on demolishing part of the principal home building and intend on replacing it and adding a carport off the structure.

There are two concerns that have come to light with this project.

They center around the demolition code and the Floor to Area Ratio (FAR).

First, on FAR, it was questioned if the garage or accessory structures be used in computing FAR. The purpose of FAR

is to not allow “mega” houses to be built on the smaller village lots and keep the aesthetic and character of the village intact. The FAR cannot be met with the current drawings and is only exceeded by 17 square feet.

The planning board feels that this is easily remedied by adjusting the plans as it is such a small amount of space.

As far as demolition is concerned, it was deemed that demolition standards will only be applied to the principal building.

The last issue that came up is regarding combined side yard setbacks and side yard setbacks. With the carport, these setback requirements cannot be met.

If the plans are not adjusted to meet requirements then the applicant will need to apply for an Area Variance. After advising the applicant of the

concerns, the owner will present an application at the March meeting.

In other business, there was discussion regarding the local law that was adopted by the Village Board regarding short term rentals. The law needs to be incorporated into the Village Code and processes and procedures of enforcement and policy need to be reviewed by the Planning Board.

Issues such as parking, trash removal, signage and noise were discussed briefly. Greg Cappelli, village trustee, was present and asked that the Board reviews it and gives their input and edits to then present back to the Village Board for ratification.

Chairperson, Nancy Rogan, applauded the Short Term Rental Committee for the document presented and thanked them for their hard work.

From April 17, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2018, CHBWV and subcontractors have worked 1,006,929 work hours without a losttime injury or illness.

“This and other work at the West Valley Demonstration Project only happens because of the skills and commitment of our employees to complete work in a safe and compliant manner,” DOE WVDP Director Bryan Bower said. “This work, safely performed, brings many benefits to the ongoing cleanup and future closure of our EM site.”

Scott Anderson, president of CHBWV, EM’s WVDP cleanup contractor, commended the team for its achievement.

“I am truly proud of this team accomplishment and sincerely thank everyone for their diligence in

completing high-risk and challenging work in a safe and compliant manner,” said Anderson.

“This is not the result of one person or one group, but a collective sense of teamwork, shared values and watching out for one another.”

Consider for a moment what this means. One million safe work hours while working among heavy construction equipment, in areas with radiological, industrial and hazardous materials, in changing conditions and in all sorts of weather for 616 days.

“All personnel working onsite should be extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said Jennifer Dundas, DOE-WVDP Safety and Site Programs Team Leader. “Safety must be at the forefront every day, especially when working in and around challenging and highrisk areas.”

John Melvin Parsons John Melvin Parsons, 83, of Ellicottville, passed away Thursday (Feb. 21, 2019) in Palm Beach County, Fla., where he was spending the winter with his wife, Sue, near their son Noble and his family.

John was born during the Great Depression, in 1935, in Corry, Pa. He was the fourth child of Gerald and Lillian Parsons and worked many hours as a youth tending to the cattle that his father sold to local farmers.

After high school, John decided that the few dollars he had in his pocket would get him across the country, so he and a school friend hitchhiked from Corry to Seattle, Wash.

After realizing that he had nothing to do in Seattle, he continued on to Tijuana, Mexico, returning to Los Angeles, Cali., to visit family.

Thus his love of travel began.

After this period of adventuring, John joined the U.S. Air Force and spent most of his service in Edinburgh, Scotland. With no training or particular expertise, he was tasked with inspecting the meat and produce supplied to the base — if it smelled bad or

was covered in bugs, he sent it back.

After his military service, John set out for California once again, working at various jobs such as dishwashing and type-setting, and living in the Watts section of the city.

Sept. 1, 1964, he met Sue, the woman he would marry just 11 weeks later, to the consternation of her parents.

Sue’s parents’ worries deepened when they discovered that John and Sue decided to spend their honeymoon traveling behind the “Iron Curtain” in cold-war Europe.

The newlyweds flew to Ireland and hitchhiked to the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, to pick up their new VW. They drove the VW over the coming weeks through Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Hungary, before leaving the Netherlands on a cargo ship, loaded with Heineken beer, for America. They arrived at the New York docks on the evening of the great Northeast blackout in 1965.

Jeanette E. Perkins

Jeanette E. Perkins, 90, of Delevan, formerly of Yorkshire Corner Apartments, died Feb. 19, 2019, at Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home, in Springville.

Born June 30, 1928, in Buffalo, she was the daughter of Harland and Elsa Goltz Milks. On Feb. 19, 1945, in Salamanca, she married Thornton Perkins.

Raised by her grandparents, Charles and Louise Milks of Ellicottville, Mrs. Perkins attended Ellicottville High School, and was a selfemployed dairy farmer, in Franklinville. She also worked for 20 years at Motorola Inc. in

Arcade.

She loved her family and the family gatherings.

Jeanette enjoyed gardening, making quilts and country and western music, as well as attending square dances. She was a big Buffalo Bills fan and was a faithful watcher of her beloved New York Yankee games.

Surviving are four daughters, Carol (Michael) John of Portville, Rose (Robert) Noel of Delevan, and Barbara (Richard) Dash and Sue Waite, both of Machias; 14 grandchildren; 25 greatgrandchildren; and 5 greatgreat-grandchildren.

“We have a lot of new vendors and exhibitors and we’re trying to fit everybody in who wants in,” said Jonathan Buck, co-organizer of the event with his father, James.

“We’re selling spaces that we’ve never sold before.”

Throughout the weekend, attendees have the opportunity to buy, sell, trade and browse with hundreds of dealers and experts at over 350 tables and 40 booths set up in and around the casino’s events center.

“I’m probably at even more than that, table wise,” Buck said Tuesday. He said they planned to begin setting up the events center Wednesday. “Trying to get it all put together is like a big puzzle, but it’s going very well At the two-day event, local sportsmen can find the latest in sporting and fishing equipment, including hunting, trapping and archery supplies, as well as outdoor guides and tours. Besides the hundreds of tables and 40 booths measuring 10 feet by 10 feet, attendees can stop at several 12-by-25 booths in the main hallway.

Vendors scheduled to be at the show include gun dealers, antique firearms, sporting goods and accessories, archery equipment, fishing gear, taxidermy services, outdoor guides, hunting preserves, trapping supplies and more.

“There are some rooms off to the side the casino has

that we’ve rented out to places like Tall Tales out of Warren,” Buck said. “It’s going to be busy and full.”

One of the attendees’ favorites, Mark Baker and Eagle Dream Rehabilitation, will be on site again with live birds in the process of rehabilitation. “The birds are always a big draw because they’re live animals and the kids love them,” Buck added.

Other groups working the event include Keystone Elk Country Alliance, Friends of NRA, Bobcat of Olean, Leisure Time Powersports of Bradford, Pa., and others from across the region.

“We’re running the whole gambit,” he said.

Among the biggest changes Buck said he’s seen since they started doing the show at the casino nearly a decade ago has been in the gun laws in New York state. However, he said he also has a lot more dealers this year than in past shows.

Along with the usual booths and tables with items for purchase, the Seneca Nation of Indians Fish and Wildlife Department will be on site with information for attendees as will the radio station WBRR 100.1 FM The Hero Saturday morning.

Buck said sportsman shows like this put all the items hunters and outdoorsmen are looking for all in one place at one time, so whatever they’re looking for they can find it. “They don’t have to go to two or three different towns to find everything,” he added. “They can just go to one place.”

But besides being a place to stock up on all the essentials for future outdoor ventures, Buck said it’s also a family-friendly environment that’s educational for kids.

“They can learn about what’s going on in the outdoor world with hunting and fishing,” he said. “They can talk to

the experts and learn from them.”

York Penn Shows are organized by Buck and his father, who is 84. Coming from Frewsburg, about a 30 drive from the casino, they have a personal connection with the area.

Plus, the show is a chance to catch up with old friends.

“My dad has been doing shows like this since the 1980s and attending shows like this since the 1970s, so for him it’s a social event,” he said. “For a lot of these vendors, that’s the only time they see each other, and for people who come to the show, it’s the only time the get to see the exhibitors.

“Everybody is there to have a good time and enjoy themselves, and we hope they have a good time,” Buck added.

The doors are open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an admission fee of $8.

The parking garage and open parking lot have over 3,000 spaces available for attendees.

On Saturday, the annual Mardi Gras Parade is planned to have fantastic floats with marchers and spectators alike wearing their zaniest costumes. This year’s theme is “Walk Through the Decades.”

Pump said the parade will be led by Grand Marshal Chicken Wing King Drew Cerza. She said Punxsutawney Phil and the Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog Club will be joining the parade again this year.

Parade participants should start lining up by Katy’s Café on Washington Street and be ready by 6 p.m., so the parade can begin promptly at 6:15 p.m.

The family-fun continues at Holiday Valley’s Winter Carnival, both Saturday and Sunday. Marketing Director Jane Eshbaugh said the biggest winter event of the season has been going on for over 50 years, and it just keeps getting better with some new events at the resort and celebrations in the village.

Eshbaugh said the favorite events are back, including the Mardi Gras Parade downtown on Saturday night, as well as the Costume Parade, the Dummy Downhill and the ever popular Snowbar at Holiday Valley.

Newer events include a downhill “Snow Kayaking” demonstration, a kids’ obstacle race and a Ski Patrol Toboggan Contest.

“Carnival is such a fun weekend for our guests and our staff,” she said. “What a great way to welcome spring skiing and riding. And, the bonus is that all those folks who come to town for the event see that there’s plenty of snow for a great spring season ahead.”

Sunday’s Costume Parade takes place at noon on the Mardi Gras slope and contestants must be able to ski or snowboard down the slope.

Eshbaugh said the imagination involved in the costumes is amazing. They’ve had everything from chairlifts and a life-size snow globe to water skiers and a motor boat. She said the stakes are high because the “Best of Show” adult and child win season passes for the 2019-20 season.

There are categories for single adults, single children and groups. To enter the parade, contestants should be at the top of Mardi Gras by 11:30 a.m.

Eshbaugh said Costume Parade entrants are encouraged to wear their costumes and participate in the Mardi Gras Parade held Saturday in the village at 6:15 p.m.

The Holiday Valley snowmaking crew creates a giant Snowbar each year, just outside Yodeler Lodge. Eshbaugh said this location is the center of action both Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m. with a DJ, the Safety Patrol Cookout, Mercy Flight lawn games and the Dummy Downhill.

Profits from the Snowbar are donated to local charities.

Mercy Flight will be holding a raffle with first prize of a scenic helicopter ride for two.

Everyone’s favorite Dummy Downhill takes place Sunday

at 2 p.m. on a course built at the bottom of Yodeler slope in full view of the Snowbar and Yodeler Lodge patrons.

Eshbaugh said dummies are constructed of wood, plastic, cardboard — even hot dog rolls — but no metal is allowed.

They must be no taller than six-feet and no heavier than 40-pounds.

“The dummies may not be living and breathing,” she said.

“They are paraded through the crowd and then pulled up the slope. ‘Mountie’ Doug McVeigh, the traditional starter, gives the OK and the dummies are sent down the slope one by one, over a jump and then they crash into a wall of snow.”

Awards for dummies will be given to the best design, the biggest air and the best crash. Entry forms are available at Customer Service or at holidayvalley.com/carnival.

On Feb. 23, hardy souls set out to conquer the snow on their fat bikes at the “Frosty CX” held at the bottom of HoliMont Ski Resort’s Sunset area. With warmer temperatures, the snow was soft but the participants pedaled through the slushy snow and ice on bikes with humongous tires. The event was in a

cyclocross race format and began with the Women’s Division, followed by the Men’s Division. Competitors took to the course doing as many loops as possible within an hour. Medals and prizes were awarded to the top three finishers in each class.
