Celebrate Ellicottville’s biggest event of the ski season at Winter Carnival weekend featuring the Mardi Gras Parade March 8 through 10. There will be fun for everyone in the village and at Holiday Valley. Barb Pump, events manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, said the Mardi Gras event has been celebrated in Ellicottville for 27 years. She said the weekend kicks off with the annual Junior Bacchus Ball Friday night. Sponsored by the chamber of commerce, this year’s ticketed gala will be held at Madigan’s

Whether it’s in like a lion with plenty of snow — as is expected this year — or a calm, relatively warm start to spring, March in Ellicottville has something for everyone. Fast-paced, family-friendly, laughter-inducing or just plain fun, enjoy it all as ski season winds down and we welcome the blooming of flowers and return of green grass. Scouts can enjoy a day on the slopes with their scouting group during Holiday Valley’s Scout Days March 2 and 3. On March 3, check out a new snowboarding event in its second year from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Boardroom Banked Slalom snowboarding event returns to Holiday Valley with a banked slalom course on Independence, as well as a vendor village and cookout on the Champagne Sundeck at Yodeler Lodge. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program. March 8 through 10, don’t miss the climax of the winter in Ellicottville during Mardi Gras and Winter Carnival Weekend. Logan Fredrickson wins slalom, GS, overall state championships For the third consecutive winter, the Ellicottville girls ski team returned from the NYSPHSAA championships with a team title. But this time, the Eagles brought a couple new medals for Logan Fredrickson, crowned the state individual champion in North Creek in both the slalom and giant slalom. On Tuesday, she made it two-for-two, winning the state GS title by .41 seconds with a total time of 2:20.41 after two runs. She finished the first run in 1:08.57 and the second in 1:11.84. Samantha Burton from Section 1 was second at 2:21.22. Logan’s twin sister Hayly Fredrickson was seventh overall in a field of 59 racers at 2:27.38 (1:11.49, 1:15.89). Cece Carls was 29th at 2:34.96 and her sister Emmylu was 38th at 2:41.88. Logan Fredrickson discusses the state championships in a video posted to the NYSPHSAA Twitter account on Tuesday. “It feels unreal,” she said, “I didn’t expect

to do this well and it’s just incredible. I’m so happy.” On Monday, Logan Fredrickson took first in the state in the slalom as part of day one of the alpine ski competition. She won the state championship by more than three seconds, finishing with a total time

of 1:35.66 after runs of :46.66 and :49.00 seconds. In second was Hannah Klingbiel of Section 2 at 1:38.77. “Last year I did better in the GS, but this year I was just trying to stay confident
