HoliMont to host ‘Frosty CX’ fat bike races next weekend

Winter fun at HoliMont Ski Resort is going to be even more exciting when the inaugural “Frosty CX” fat bike race comes to the resort Feb. 23.

The new, non-skiing event features hardy souls who set out to conquer the snow on their fat bikes, which are basically mountain bikes with huge tires that are made for snow, according to Marketing Director Greg Culver.

Slip down a slope at HV’s annual Penguin Paddle

Each year, people of all ages don garbage bags and slip down the slope of Yodler like penguins at the annual Penguin Paddle. The event benefits Holiday Valley’s Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program that serves 200 and 250 disabled clients each season offering ski lessons and equipment to people with all disabilities, both physical and cognitive.

Make like a penguin and slide down a slippery slope at this year’s annual Penguin Paddle that takes place Saturday, Feb. 23.

The slide features hundreds of funloving people who put on a helmet and don a black garbage bag, then slide down Yodeler Slope on their bellies like a penguin to raise money for Holiday Valley’s Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program (LASP).

Debuting last week was the Blueberry Maple Pancake beer, produced by Ellicottville Brewing Co., using maple syrup produced by Sprague’s Maple Farm of Portville.

EBC owner Peter Kreinheder and Sprague’s owner Randy Sprague said they are astounded by the response.

“It’s been lighting up social media,” Sprague said, noting hundreds of comments and about 1,000 shares.

“It was an Instagram photo shared to Facebook,” Kreinheder said. “In just 30 hours, we’ve had over 168,000 views on Facebook — something resonated with someone. It’s just fun to see the reaction — we never expected it to be like this.”

The pancakes depicted in the photo weren’t just for show.

“We made pancakes with the beer,” he said. “They were great.”

Dina’s, a restaurant on Washington Street in Ellicottville, made pancakes for customers last weekend with the beer, Kreinheder added.

On its own, “the beer tastes just like a blueberry pancake,” he said. Made like a pastry beer — with different bases and malts to bring a pancake flavor to the brew.

In addition, blueberry is added, he said, making a similar taste to the well-known blueberry wheat beer produced by the company.

“Then, of course, we added in the maple syrup,” Kreinheder said.

“It’s really good — almost way too good,” Sprague said. “It might make you rethink beer.”

The demand — with calls coming from across the country seeking the brew before it was even released — means more will be made.

“We only produced about 100 barrels of the beer,” Kreinheder said. “People were coming in here buying it by the case as it was coming off the assembly line.

“This is just bizarre,” he added.

The next batch will be made with a twist — water pulled from incoming tree sap from Sprague’s reverse osmosis system will be used in the brewing process, as well as maple syrup.

The business owners had spoken previously about a collaboration, but talks became serious late last year.

“We did a food show over in Ellicottville last fall,” Sprague said. “The owner of EBC came over… we got to talking about flavors and things. Shortly thereafter, he gave us a call.

“One thing led to another, and it’s in the cans and kegs,” he said.

While Sprague’s has collaborated with brewers before, this is a much larger scale run, Sprague said.

It’s not the first collaboration for EBC, however. Last fall, Kreinheder said his firm worked with Pumpkinville to create the company’s first pumpkin-flavor beer that was an instant hit. Next month, EBC will release a chocolate orange beer in collaboration with Platter’s Chocolates of Buffalo.

Sprague said he was pleased to be part of the effort with Kreinheder.

“He’s a wonderful person to work with,” Sprague said. “It was really nice to do this with them.”

Sprague’s restaurant will also serve the beer starting this week, he said.

“It’s starting its way out to distribution,” Sprague said.

Ellicottville Brewing Co. opened in 1995 and operates a craft beer brewery and restaurant in Ellicottville, as well as brewing and restaurant facilities at Bemus Point and brewing operations in Little Valley.

Since the 1970s, Sprague’s has expanded to collect from 20,000 taps on 1,000 acres in and around Portville, shipping syrup internationally and serving its products in the Portville restaurant.

Phones rang synchronously in the calculus classroom. We all looked. It was a message from Mr. Matt Finn, our class advisor.

“Tomorrow is not a dress-up day for Spirit Week,” the message read, “but we encourage ONLY seniors to participate in ‘Future Day.’ This means you may wear apparel from a college or the workforce or whatever you decide to do after graduation!”

Wow, what a weighty request, we all thought. Our futures are just around the corner. Did we even know what was in the cards for our fellow classmates?

It’s so easy to get absorbed in one’s own post-high school process, one forgets that everyone around them is going through the same exact thing.

With this in mind, Abby Sonnenberg and I set out to make this wrong right. We call this segment “Future Aspirations with the ECS Class of 2019.”

Fredrickson, Azcarate win two slalom races each for ECS

Ellicottville’s Logan Fredrickson and Mitchell Azcarate won a pair of slalom races Wednesday night, Feb. 6, as the Eagles competed against Williamsville and Gow again at Holiday Valley.

In the first girls race, Fredrickson won by nearly two full seconds with a time of :59.24

over two runs (:29.62, :29.62).

Her twin sister Hayly was third at 1:02.54, while teammate Emmylu Carls was sixth (1:27.58).

In the first boys race, Azcarate won with a total of :59.69 (:29.63, :30.06). Eric Shattenburg was third (1:04.99), Adrian DeOrbe fourth (1:10.07) and Emmett Coolidge sixth (1:17.58).

In race No. 2, Logan and Hayly Fredrickson finished first (1:00.92) and second (1:01.65), respectively. Cece Carls was fourth (1:10.62).

Eagles rise to 10-0 in league, defeat Pine Valley 55-48

Having already clinched the league title, the Ellicottville boys basketball team used Monday to push an unbeaten league mark to 10 straight.

But it might have gotten a bit more of a test than it expected.

Clayton Rowland recorded 15 points, five assists and four steals to guide the Eagles to a 55-48 CCAA East II victory over Pine Valley. Leif Jimerson added 12 points and Wyatt Chudy had 10 for Ellicottville, which led by 15 at halftime and took a

13-point advantage into the fourth quarter before fending off a Pine Valley rally.

With one game remaining, the Eagles have won a season-best five contests in a row overall.

“It was a good win for us on the road,” said Ellicottville coach Dave McCann, whose team had topped the Panthers, 64-44, earlier in the year. “They made a run in the fourth quarter, but we were able to close out on our free throws down the stretch.”

Christian Ortiz had 14 points for Pine Valley.

Ellicottville 39, North Collins 28 The Ellicottville boys basketball team celebrated another CCAA East II title Friday night but not until after surviving a scare from North Collins.

Last-place NC led by six at halftime and held a 28-26 advantage entering the fourth quarter. The last eight minutes, however, belonged to Ellicottville, which blanked NC 13-0 in the frame.

Ellicottville outscored North Collins 23-6 in the second half.

“Our defensive energy stepped up,” Ellicottville coach Dave McCann said.

“The first half, especially, we played with very little energy. We came out in the second half and just played with better energy.

“We shot poorly all night.

But I think defensively our energy was good enough to

steal a win.”

Clayton Rowland racked up 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals, and Wyatt Chudy had a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards to lead Ellicottville.

David Gullo and Tyler Robinson scored 10 points each for North Collins (112, 0-8).

For Ellicottville, the league title is its fourth straight.

“It’s a pretty good accomplishment with pretty much a totally new cast,” McCann said. “I’m really proud of the kids and the focus they’ve had when we got into league play. The goal we set on Day 1 was to try to win the league. And our second goal was to try to go undefeated in the league, and we have a chance to do that Monday (against Pine Valley) so we’re looking forward to that.”

HOW TO DO A PROPER PUSH UP

I am a real stickler for proper form, and one of the most basic exercises that I promote my clients to perfect is the push up.

The push-up is an amazing exercise that offers a ton of great benefits including: 1) Can be done anywhere — You can do push ups anywhere because they only require your body weight. No fancy or expensive equipment required.

2) Increase pushing strength — Push-ups engage your chest, shoulders, triceps, and core for a complete pushing exercise. If you are benching, you won’t get the same core activation.

3) Variations — Push-ups are a very dynamic exercise with

many different variations to satisfy the beginner to the advanced athlete.

While pushups can be extremely beneficial to help improve your physique and muscle endurance, even people who have exercised for years may have improper push up form.

Here is a checklist to make sure you use perfect push up form every time you do a push up!

Tip #1: Straight head and neck position I see this as a common mistake for people who are simply not strong enough to complete a push up — usually weak chest muscles — or simply have poor posture from working on a computer all the time. The head is forced forward and down in an effort to make the push up easier. I would

recommend doing knee push ups — because you have to start from somewhere, right? — until you can easily keep your head in line with your torso as you do the push up in a slow and controlled motion.

Tip #2: Hands below plane of shoulders If you have not developed your chest muscles, the chances are you’ll start your push up with your hands above the plane of your shoulders. What I mean is that when you get ready to do a pushup, your hands are placed above your shoulders, almost in the same horizontal plane as your head. Keep your hand position slightly wider than shoulder width apart, next to the middle of your chest, which will properly work your chest, shoulders, and triceps

Ellicottville Central considers bringing on school resource officer

After a presentation on Feb. 5, the Ellicottville Central School District is pondering the addition of a school resource officer (SRO) to its staff.

From the county’s SRO program, Lieutenant Brandon Walters presented to the Board of Education, outlining the benefits.

“An SRO is like a triangle,” says Walters, “He has three roles: police officer, counselor and teacher.”

The benefits of an SRO at ECS include increased campus security and school safety plan advisement.

“It’s not our job to write the plans,” says Walters, “but it’s our job to help.”

School resource officers foster positive interaction between law enforcement and students, serving as role models campuswide. The mere sight of a police car in the parking lot can be a deterrent for any questionable activity.

An SRO works into the summer, potentially instructing drivers’ education and other safety courses. The program also sponsors an annual week-long summer camp in Central New York State.

With an SRO at ECS, its students can attend.

Additionally, an SRO will work at the Cattaraugus County Fair, the local summer recreation programs and undergo additional training.

Though SROs work for the school, their schedule does not coincide with the scholastic one. With the extra hours accrued at afterschool events (e.g. basketball games, prom), an officer collects “comp hours” which he or she may use on school recess days including summer vacation. This allows the officer paid leave while still on duty.

Despite the benefits, an SRO comes with a cost. With salary and benefits, an officer can cost from $87,000 to $115,000 per year. Additionally, the school must purchase a vehicle (approx. $22,000) and equip it to police standards. This includes paint, radio and lights. It does not include gas and general maintenance.

“There are a lot of benefits to a school resource officer,” said Superintendent Robert Miller. “It is a great program, but it is expensive and we must proceed carefully looking forward to determine whether it is right for us.”

“Even though it’s not our event, we work very well with the snocross organization,” Hitchcock said.

Feature racing will be held beginning at 6 p.m.

Friday and Saturday for the Pro Open and Pro Lite series, and some kind of racing — from practice for professionals to racing for amateurs — will take place throughout both days beginning at 8 a.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

With a strong schedule in place, the series continues its commitment to remarkable racing, including an exceptionally talented group of pro riders returning to the series in the 2018-19 season.

Past pro champions Kody Kamm and Tim Tremblay look to carry the torch after 11-time champion Tucker Hibbert retired from racing this past summer. Despite Hibbert’s absence, the pro class is chock-full of racers capable of winning the title this year.

“Snocross has great talent across all fields, and while we will miss Tucker’s professionalism and ability, we are going to see some of the best racing we have ever seen. The whole field is ready to step-up and win.”

In addition to the races, the casino will be giving away a snowmobile and ATVs during that weekend.

Special offers at the casino restaurants will also be available.

“It’s always a good weekend for us and brings in a lot of people that haven’t been here before, so they get to come in and see what’s being offered,” Hitchcock said.

But attendees don’t always arrive by car or truck. Should weather permit the snowmobile trails to be open, snowmobilers will be able to access the event by riding a sled of their own and parking it at the casino.

“It brings people out and gives them something to do,” Hitchcock said. “It’s a great, fun thing for people to come and join us.”

Race fans from around the globe will continue to tune into AMSOIL Championship Snocross, Powered by Ram via the series partnership with CBS Sports Network and the livestream production available at snocross.com.

The casino will also be showing the event at its other properties in Buffalo and Niagara Falls.

County IDA interested in $2.4 million Ellicottville Spa project

By Rick Miller Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency board members reacted with interest last week to an application for tax breaks for a $2.4 million Scandinavian Spa in Ellicottville.

Board members spoke by phone with developer Travis Mayer, the former Olympic skier who trained at Holiday Valley prior to winning a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

The 5.4-acre site for Scandinavian Spas Ellicottville LLC is at the end of Snowpine Village Road currently owned

by Holiday Valley.

Mayer and his wife, Elisabeth, are expected to close on the purchase soon. They said they hope to begin construction in April providing the necessary town permits are received.

About 30 jobs will be created during construction, with most being from Cattaraugus County, Mayer told the IDA board. A Buffalo or Rochester contractor will be selected soon.

Plans call for six structures with about 14,000 square feet of indoor space. There will be a reception/check-in area, limited service cafe, locker rooms, massage rooms and a variety of saunas.

The spa design is based on traditional Finnish and Icelandic hydrotherapy regimens in which guests alternate between hot, cold and relaxation.

Travis, who lives in Steamboat, Colo., is a former CEO of Interwest Resorts, a $1.5 billion publicly traded operator and developer of mountain resorts, heli-skiing and hospitality properties.

Elisabeth Mayer was vice president of corporate finance and investor relations at Interwest Resorts.

A 2020 opening is planned. The facility will be a year-round spa open seven days a week, Mayer said. Plans call for three full-time and 14 full- and part-time employees by the third year.

“Glad to have you in town,” IDA board member Joseph Snyder told the Mayers.

“It’s a great addition to the whole area,” added Thomas Buffamante, IDA chairman.

Scandinavian Spas Ellicottville LLC is seeking sales tax abatement for materials and furnishings, and a 15-year tourism P.I.L.O.T. (payment in lieu of taxes).

A public hearing will be scheduled on the project over the next several weeks.

The IDA board will vote on the tax breaks at its March meeting.

Mayer told the IDA board the tax breaks “make a big difference to the economics of the project.”

Wiktor thanked Mayer for deciding “to relocate here and invest in Cattaraugus County.”

New York residents would make up 40 percent of visitors, mostly from outside Cattaraugus County. About half would come from Ohio and Ontario, and 8 percent from Pennsylvania.

Corey Wiktor, IDA executive director, said the Scandinavian Spa is unlike anything in the area. The Mayers settled on Ellicottville after an extensive search.

The Grange of Hamburg proposes Ellicottville restaurant

By Caitlin Croft The owners of The Grange Community Kitchen, a restaurant in Hamburg, have proposed opening a new restaurant in downtown Ellicottville.

At this month’s Village Planning Board meeting, an application was presented for the restaurant, yet to be named, to be located at 23 Washington St., which would occupy two stories with an outdoor patio for dining.

This location was granted permission for remodeling in 2017 and was a controversial project. Since then, the space has sat vacant.

The application is being presented by the building owner, Phil Vogt, and the owners of The Grange. They plan on offering dinner service with brunch on the weekends.

This location is in the Village Commercial District and the Historic Overlay. With this current proposal, there are no changes to the exterior. Floor to area ratio has been met along with open space requirements.

The site plan provided only puts into perspective property lines and the building footprint. Because it is in the Historic Overlay District, it is exempt from Village

Commercial Parking Requirements. This is a Type One action under the State Environmental Quality Review and a determination of significance will be required before any action can be taken.

The board had several questions, the first concerning waste removal. Recyclables will be held in the basement and removed as needed and there will be a small garbage bin for food waste on the back service entry deck.

Currently there is no railing on the deck and the height of the railing has been brought into question.The board feels something higher would be needed especially on the side adjacent to current residences and common areas.

The applicant suggested greenery or a trellis to mitigate this issue and is willing to speak with adjacent property owners to answer any questions or concerns. They are willing to work with the public to make this a project and business that adds to the community and village. Drawings will be produced to create what she envisions on the back patio.

There was also concern regarding interior construction as the exterior project saw some issues with

Lawmaker says county shouldn’t opt out on marijuana

Under a new recreational marijuana law being considered in Albany, Cattaraugus County, like others across the state, would be able to opt out of participating in growing and selling marijuana.

The Cattaraugus County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board joined the discussion last week as County Legislator David Koch, D-Salamanca, shared information he learned in Albany.

State officials, he said, are looking for the legalization of recreational marijuana to take effect April 1, 2020. Counties would be able to opt out of growing or selling marijuana at a dispensary, Koch said.

They would also opt out of revenue, he said. There is a 2 percent tax for the county and the municipality where it is sold. The state gets 20 percent.

“It’s going to be here,” Koch said. “It makes no sense to opt out. You give up the revenue. People are going to go to another county to buy their marijuana or the black market.”

The legalization and taxation of recreational marijuana was proposed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in his 2019-20 state budget.

The Cattaraugus County Board of Health has expressed its concern over the state’s proposed legalization of recreational marijuana use.

Crystal Abers, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, said after news spread of a Little Valley family growing hemp under a pilot program with Cornell University and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, eight more Cattaraugus County farms submitted applications this year.

The hemp plants’ fiber, oils and seeds are used in a wide variety of products. Hemp plants contain very little tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the ingredient that gives marijuana its potency.

Nathan Blesy, the Cattaraugus County Farm Bureau president, said recently that growing hemp is not a magic bullet for farmers suffering from depressed milk prices.

It is something worth looking at adding to crop rotations for some farmers, he said.

HoliMont, Holiday Valley women dominate in speed

By Caitlin Croft U14 athletes traveled to Naples, N.Y., for the last regular season State Championship qualifier.

The race was held at Hunt Hollow a small club with great terrain just south of Rochester.

The race weekend consisted of a training day Saturday and race day on Sunday. Super-G athletes reach much higher speeds and take more time acclimating to the hill along with further training with coaches on the actual race run.

Sunday, race day, included a full training run with the race in the afternoon. This allows athletes to make corrections and execute a plan for the run that counts.

All of the HoliMont and Holiday Valley ladies finished in the top 30 of 49 athletes and eight of the top 10. This is the best showing

for the ladies and a testament to the hard work they put in at the recent flite camp held at HoliMont.

The flite camp is a requirement for the Super-G held yearly. This year’s was perfectly executed and gave the athletes ample time to get comfortable with a jump in the race.

Super-G and Downhill (downhill is not participated in at this age) have jumps incorporated unlike the technical events, Slalom and Giant Slalom.

Women: Madalyn Cummings of HoliMont once again was the fastest time of the day narrowing edging out teammate Mary Catherine Mangan. Carissa Dunlap (HO) finished in the fourth spot with her best result of the season.

Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at Holiday Valley, said the whole idea of the event is to not only raise money for the program but also to raise awareness of the ski resort’s adaptive program.

“The Penguin Paddle is one of our greatest traditions that’s fun for our guests, but also supports a great cause.

Everyone wins,” she said.

LASP Program Director William Bredenberg said there will be an auction for a season pass donated by Holiday Valley, a $500 travel voucher and a pair of high-performance skis from City Garage.

He said they will also have many silent auction items for people to bid on. As always, a great lunch and adult beverages will be served.

According to Bredenberg, this year is the Lounsbury Program’s 30th anniversary. He said all the money for the LASP program comes from either donations or proceeds from the Penguin Paddle.

He said they just purchased a sit ski for people not able to stand for almost $7,000.

“Almost 70-percent of our volunteer instructors are certified by the

Professional Ski Instructors of America,” he said. “This takes an awful lot of training and dedication by our staff. The funds for this also come from the Paddle.”

Bredenberg said there are some people in the community that can’t afford the cost of a lesson. LASP has a scholarship program, so no one will get turned away because of finances.

“We have a lot of needs and, thanks to the wonderful people in the community, we are able to get many people out on snow and put smiles on lots of faces,” he said.

The Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program serves 200 and 250 disabled clients each season offering ski lessons and equipment to people with all disabilities, both physical and cognitive.

The actual slide scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Registration is $1 and runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the base of Yodeler. The slide is divided by age groups: 4-6; 7-8; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14; 15-20; adults (21 and over); and Mixed Doubles (2 person bags).

“It started out in the cold states like Minnesota for people looking to pedal yearround,” he said. “Biking in Western New York is growing by leaps and bounds and people are always looking for new events.”

According to Culver, the event gets its name Frosty from winter and the CX from cyclocross.

He said this is a firsttime event for the area.

It will be a fat bike race, but in a cyclocross race format allowing the spectators to see most of the race.

“It’ll be easy and a spectacle to watch.

People will be able to see the whole race because it’ll be held at the bottom of Sunset area,” he said.

Culver said there will be a groomed snow course similar to the resort’s cyclocross course, but it will be for fat bikes. He said Loud Performance Products from Bemus Point will be bringing out their SnowDog groomer to

help get the course in tip-top shape.

To keep it simple this first year, Culver said there will be a very basic lineup with three divisions: men, women and kids. Medals and prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each class.

“The event is open to everyone and is already a buzz among the biking community,” he said.
