Holiday Valley hosts Empire State Winter Games torch send-off

The annual running of the Empire State Winter Games torch got its start Sunday in Ellicottville on the way to Lake Placid for the event’s opening ceremony.

At Holiday Valley Jan. 27, snowboarder Grace Dalton had the honor of taking the torch on the ride of its life, carving down the Yodeler slope with torch in hand as the kick off to the relay.

Take part in Mountain Ski Fest on Feb. 8

By Kellen M. Quigley With winter in full swing, temperatures low and snow blowing, February is a great time to experience some outdoor fun at Holiday Valley.

On Feb. 8, Mountain Ski Fest will entail a day full of skiing, snowboarding, activities and camaraderie for skiers or riders.

What was formerly Mountain Man Day, now all are invited to the fun of Ski Fest.

Starting at 8 a.m. and lasting late into the afternoon, Ski Fest includes ski and snowboard demo equipment from local shops, recreational racing, breakfast, lunch and beer and wine and tastings.

MacQueen recognized as Outstanding Nordic Patroller at reception

Mary MacQueen, who serves as patrol director and instructor for the Allegany State Park (ASP) Nordic Ski Patrol, was honored at a reception at the Red House Administration Building, Jan. 26.

On behalf of the over 28,000 members of the National Ski Patrol (NSP) System, the event officially recognized her as she was presented with the National Ski Patrol’s “National Outstanding Nordic Patroller for 2018” award.

Scandinavian Spa proposed for construction on Snowpine Drive The January meeting of the Ellicottville Planning Board opened with a joint public hearing with the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) on four micro cell towers by Verizon.

The four locations of the towers are at Donlen Drive, Sky High, HoliMont Lodge and the Inn at Holiday Valley.

These micro cells are canisters that will be fixed to the top of utility poles for three of the sites and will be fixed to the roof of the Inn. They are roughly the size of a fivegallon bucket.

The sites need a zoning variance from the ZBA and referral to the County Planning Board for two of the sites.

There were no members of the public in attendance to comment.

The ZBA to declared the Planning Board Lead Agency in the State Environment Quality Review (SEQR). The ZBA also decided to table the decision on the Zoning Variance until their Feb. 7 meeting pending the decision from the County Planning Board.

A negative declaration in SEQR that there would be no significant environmental impacts also passed.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, Travis and Lis Mayer presented on their proposal for a Scandinavian Spa that would be on a five-acre parcel

to be purchased from Win-Sum Corporation. It would be located at the end of Snowpine Drive behind the Inn at Holiday Valley and to skiers right of Sunrise Chairlift.

The project would entail five buildings. First would be a reception building with changing rooms, check-in, a cafe and warming kitchen.

Second would be a massage building; third, a steam sauna with attached maintenance garage and utilities basement; fourth, a dry sauna; and last, a banya sauna.

There would be five spa pools for hot and cold therapy. They will be designed to look like natural springs as you would find in the Rockies. There will be lounge chairs on the terraces surrounding the spa pools including a rain shower and two bucket showers.

The application and site plans are extremely thorough with an extensive landscaping plan. The owners would be hiring all local contractors to do the work. They are aiming for a December 2020 opening.

This application was deemed complete and a public hearing was set for Feb. 25.

The next meeting of the Town Planning Board will be Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at the town/village hall. The next meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals will be Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. at the town/village hall.

Linnea Jimerson Girls Basketball

Senior Linnea Jimerson reached 1,000 career points for the Ellicottville varsity girls basketball team on Friday night in a loss at Franklinville.

Jimerson needed three points entering the game to pass 1,000 and scored points No. 1,000 and 1,001 on her second layup of the first quarter. She finished with 23 points in the game.

An all-around player, Jimerson currently averages 15 points and 10 rebounds for the season. She also scored 13 points on Wednesday night in a loss to Frewsburg.

Sophomore Leif Jimerson led the Ellicottville boys basketball team to its second victory over rival Franklinville this season, scoring 25 points to go with four rebounds and four steals Thursday night on the road.

Earlier in the week, he marked 12 points in a non-league loss to Frewsburg. Jimerson is averaging 13.8 points per game and leads the team in scoring.

‘Chicks with Hits’ tour coming to casino Feb. 9

Three of country music’s biggest female stars are bringing their “Chicks With Hits” tour to the Seneca Allegany Events Center Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m.

Country greats Terri Clark, Pam Tillis and Suzy Bogguss will be on stage together performing their fans’ favorite hit songs from their legendary careers with acoustic guitars, a little bit of percussion and some bass.

Set on a small stage, the uniquely intimate show will be an evening full of harmony and humor.

With 36 Top 10 singles between them, there’s a lot of material to pull from. Over the span of their careers, the trio has won countless Country Music Awards and Grammy Awards.

Between them, they have sold over 10 million records around the world. All are members of the Grand Ole Opry.

Clark is known for singles such as “Better Things To Do,” “Poor, Poor Pitiful Me” and “I Just Wanna Be Mad.” Among Tillis’ hits are “Maybe It Was Memphis,” “Mi Vida Loca,” “Spilled Perfume,” “Don’t Tell Me What To Do” and “Let That Pony Run.” Bogguss’ hits include “Outbound Plane,” “Someday Soon,” “Letting Go,” “Hey Cinderella” and “Drive South.”

The Press recently had the opportunity to talk with Clark and Tillis about their music and the tour they are bringing to the Seneca Allegany Events Center.

According to Clark, it was her idea to put this tour together, thinking about the concept about five years ago. She knew she wanted to put a package together that would feature females with hits and they would give their audiences 90 minutes to two hours of hit after hit after hit.

Clark said it had to be somebody who had the hits, as well as somebody who could play instruments and sing harmony. She had Pam and Suzy in mind but, at the same time, she and her agent had to start with a list, which they narrowed down to Pam and Suzy.

“You can have an idea, but if you don’t have some team members or partners to make it happen, it stays just an idea,” she said. “Pam and Suzy are both great harmony singers and they were on board with this idea right away when I suggested it.

“The other factor is, when you’re on a bus with two other artists, there’s no room for divas and crazy on that ride,” Clark continued. “You gotta choose good people that you’re going to get along with, and we sure do.”

Clark said Suzy and Pam were acquaintances of hers when the tour was being put together, but when they started rehearsing for this tour that kicked off in October 2017, they really got to know each other.

“We went over to Suzy’s house and had dinner, then we sat down and rehearsed with our guitars in a very casual manner,” she said. “The minute we started singing

together, it sounded like family harmony — right ‘off the bat.’ We all found our parts and it just seemed like such a natural thing.”

Tillis said Clark and Bogguss are funny, warm and generous people. There are no big egos. It’s just easy with them and she really loves that.

“It’s not that there isn’t work involved, but it’s easy work and it’s fun work. We’re on a team together,” she said. “We blend in harmony so well, which was such a great surprise because we didn’t know.

Sometimes you get the concept for a tour before you actually know if it’s going to work.”

Clark said when she moved to Nashville, in 1987, she was selling western wear at retail shops and also waiting tables and bartending. She was a huge Pam Tillis and Suzy Bogguss fan and they were both all over the radio having hits, in the early ‘90s.

“I was aspiring to be like them, so getting to sit onstage with them every night and singing the songs I cut my teeth on when I first went to Nashville is an honor for me and it’s pretty special,” she said.

According to Clark, most of her uptempo hits are more fun and are female empowering songs. She said a lot of her favorites are songs that were never singles, but were just album cuts.

“Probably ‘Poor, Poor Pitiful Me,’ ‘Better Things to Do’ or ‘Girls Lie Too’ are my most popular songs,” she said. “Judging from the crowd’s reaction when we are on stage, I would say Pam’s biggest hit is still ‘Maybe It Was Memphis and Suzy’s ‘Drive South’ is a big one for her.”

Tillis said she knew she was a fan of Clark and Bogguss and she has become interested in what they do as artists. She said they both have more depth to them as artists than what people might know.

“We’ve all kept going with our music and keep reaching. There’s more to us than our 90s hits,” she said. “That’s one thing — it was easy to fill the show out with our hits.”

Out of all her songs, Clark said she likes “No Fear” from one of her earlier albums, Fearless. She said although it wasn’t a big hit, there are a lot of songs on it that have a lot of depth and meaning.

Clark said her most recent album, “Raising the Bar” — released in September 2018 — has 13 tracks. She said she worked on it for a few years and she’s very proud of it.

Born in Montreal, Clark now resides in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. She is currently the only Canadian female member of the Grand Ole Opry.

“I look at [membership in the Grand Ole Opry] like an honor and I’m sure somebody’s going to come along and change that, at some point. For now, I will wear the badge and represent it as well as I can,” she said.

How to plan the perfect wedding

With Valentine’s Day as one of the most popular holidays of the year, there’s no doubt February is the month of love.

After several years of courtship, and several cold Februaries snuggled close, many couples will be tying the knot this year. But there’s plenty of planning to do before the big day.

In recent years, the most popular months to get married have been in the fall when the weather is cooler and the trees are full of color.

So while those “savethe-date” cards may not be going out immediately, February could be the perfect time to begin planning.

Step One: Developing a budget and set the date Before you book the caterer, venue or hotel for your guests, you and your partner need to figure out when the wedding will be and how much you can spend.

Sit down together and look at your income, savings (if you have any) and expenses. You’ll want to set the date as early as possible so you know what funds you’ll need and by when.

Next, see if your families can contribute anything, determine how many people you want to invite and set some spending priorities with your partner. You don’t want to overspend and go into debt before even having your dress or tux fitted.

Research typical wedding expenses and look for ways to cut costs. If your cousin got married near you a couple years ago, see which florist they used and ask if they do recommendation discounts.

Once you’ve set a date and squared away your budget, create a planning timeline. You can make the next few months feel a little more manageable by putting together an organizational process.

Step Two: Assembling your wedding party and guest list With your plan in place, at the top of the to-dos should be reaching

out to people you’d like in your wedding party right away. As long as it’s early enough, making sure your maid of honor and best man will be there is a great first step.

Next is the guest lists itself. You and your future spouse can each put together your own list, and then compare, deciding if there is anyone else you would like to add to or cut from the list. Make sure you have up-to-date contact information.

Send out those savethe-date cards about six months in advance. They aren’t an absolute must, but they’re a helpful way to give family and

friends a generous heads up. Once the wedding is about 2 months away, send out invitations to all the people on your guest list. Don’t forget the RSVP option so you know for sure who is coming. No-shows waste a lot of resources.

Step Three: Choosing a Venue, Officiant, and Vendors Unless you already know exactly where you want to get married, you will need to do some research to find a good venue. Start by doing an online search for venues that match your criteria and fit your budget.

You’ll never know if the

perfect location is nearby if you don’t research first.

Next, you’ll want to book your venue and wedding officiant at least nine months in advance or even a year before.

Pastors and reception halls can get booked up quickly, especially if you’ve selected a popular venue or a date, like a Saturday in June.

As the big day creeps closer, you’ll want to get in touch with all the other vendors. From your videographer and photographer to the caterers, several months in preparation to find the exact right people to give you the best looking and tasting wedding is essential.

Don’t forget to hire someone to provide music for the ceremony and reception! The perfect music, whether a string quartet or local DJ, can stir up emotions and make weddings memorable.

Step Four: Buying Your Supplies Now it’s time to put all that budgeting and all those calls and appointments leading up to the big day together.

Maybe you’ve already spent a lot of time thinking about what your dream wedding will look like, but before you start buying attire and supplies, look for aesthetic inspiration in wedding magazines, wedding websites or even photographs of real weddings you’ve attended.

Next, it’s time to purchase the attire. If you are a bride, it’s a good idea to purchase your dress about eight months in advance. Allow at least 6 months for purchasing and fitting dresses and suits for the wedding party.

The Middle School Moving-Up Dance

Date: Jan. 24, 2019 Place: Ellicottville Central School 1.5 hours out: The crew surveyed the cafeteria, its empty expanse almost incomprehensible. Fold-up tables compacted against the walls, the space was desolate and depressing. A lone soda bottle sat on a ledge, un-recycled.

“We have to turn this into the time of their lives,” said the crew’s leader. They got to work.

1 hour out: Balloons of blue and yellow, the colors of the National Honor Society (NHS), were scattered across the floor.

“I’m almost out of air,” gasped a helper as she puffed into the latex.

“That’s physically impossible,” interjected Blair Wood, physics teacher and Ellicottville’s honor society advisor, as he readied the sound system. “Who has the music?”

“I do,” screamed Abby Sonnenberg, NHS President. She sprinted with her laptop. On it was a perfectly-curated Spotify playlist.

Comprised of meme songs, golden oldies, dance hall classics and today’s hits, it was more than ready to entertain the 2019 Moving-Up Dance.

“I need help!” yelled Meganne Chapman, NHS Vice-President. “Should we tape the balloons the wall?”

“YES!” the response was unanimous.

30 minutes out: “I love these dances,” said Wood. “The middle-schoolers are so uninhibited and carefree. It’s not like other dances I’ve been to. Here everyone dances!

Because of today’s technology, we can always play music they want to hear.”

“So we are going to take requests?” asked Gabby Squires, another volunteer. “I’ll get a sheet of paper.”

15 minutes out: “The 6th graders are almost done with the moving-up ceremony,” warned Wood.

The cafeteria was transformed. The lights on the stage were complemented by the streamers hanging from the door. It was perfect.

5 minutes out: “They’re coming!” someone yelled.

And then there they were. Middle schoolers in suits, dresses, jeans and hats were lined up at the door. The air was loud and frantic as people scanned the crowd for their dates, exchanging compliments. No one knew what to expect, but everyone was hoping for that one slow dance.

And 3-2-1…music!

The Aftermath “I think that went well,” said Abby, surveying the popped balloons strewn across the floor. “Everyone we asked said that their favorite part was dancing. I’d call that a success.”

“I agree,” nodded her 6th-grade sister, Sophie. “My abs hurt from dancing so much. ‘Cotton-Eyed Joe’ twice was a very good choice.”

“Why thank you,” said Abby and I simultaneously. As co-DJs, we had co-made that a spur-of-the-moment decision.

“I’m glad Principal Ploetz enjoyed our song selection, too,” I said. “He had a good laugh when we chose Celine Dion as the last slow song.”

The helpers sighed a chuckled. We were all exhausted.

“Thank you, ladies,” said Wood. “I owe you Tim and Bonnie’s for this… à la carte.”

Ellicottville completes sweep of Franklinville

To pull off a rare sweep in one of the Big 30’s fiercest boys basketball rivalries, all Ellicottville had to do was think back to its first meeting with Franklinville.

In the Eagles’ 51-35 win on Jan. 4, they overcame a 9-0 deficit. On Thursday, Jan. 24, they faced a 7-0 hole when coach Dave McCann called a timeout nearly three minutes in.

“I actually said that to them in the first timeout — we’ve been here before, settle down,” McCann said. “I think sometimes with the emotion of the game they come out a little too excited, a little too jacked up.

Once they settle in and play basketball, they find their rhythm a little bit.”

Once Ellicottville took the lead, it never lost control, picking up a key 59-52 win.

The victory has the Eagles (9-6, 6-0) wellpositioned for a fourth straight CCAA East II title, but it would be the first championship in three years not shared with Franklinville (6-8, 4-2). The teams had split their league meetings the last five years.

“Both young teams, but I thought we really battled tonight,” said McCann, whose Eagles, as with the Panthers, started three underclassmen. “We were down a starter, Clayton Rowland, who was out of town at the Pro Bowl playing in a flag football tournament, and I just thought the seven guys that played, each one of them, stepped up in a different way and really played a great game overall together. That’s a big win for us.”

Ellicottville sophomore Leif Jimerson thrived in transition and scored a game-high 25 points — 11 during the Eagles’ 19-4 run to end the first quarter.

“He anticipates real well,” McCann said. “He gets out on the break, and he was finishing tonight, which was good. He’s got a nice outside shot on the offense, but I think

where he’s most dangerous is getting out in transition.”

Equally key to Ellicottville’s fast-break attack was junior Jordan Grinols.

“Jordan had seven assists for us tonight, and he made a couple of really nice fullcourt passes down to Leif for layups that really were big, right off of rebounds,” McCann said. “The kid had 12 rebounds — only scored three points, but 12 rebounds, seven assists. He really carried a big load tonight.”

Senior Steven Rowland added 14 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks for the Eagles, while freshman Logan Grinols made four assists.

Franklinville had freshman Josh Haskell pour in 23 points and sophomore Logan Frank score 20, but the Panthers had a fourgame win streak snapped. They shot only 29 percent (17-of-58).

“They were better than we were,” Franklinville coach Jeff Haskell said. “We didn’t make shots, what’d we have … 20, 24, 25 turnovers? You can’t turn the ball over like that. We were throwing it backwards against their zone. How many layups did we miss? Last Friday night we scored 85 points and we had 12 in-the-paint layups. Tonight we may have missed 12.

“It seemed like they got most of the loose balls … all the intangibles they got. They were better than us tonight, no doubt about it.”

Now the young Eagles own a two-game lead atop the standings.

“They’ve been successful all the way up through — in modified and up through JVs — so we know there’s some talent here,” McCann said. “It’s just getting them up to the varsity level and letting them see that they can be successful has been the biggest thing. Their confidence is growing by the week, and it’s really fun to watch. It’s a great group to be around because they’re all learning together.”

Also in high school boys basketball action: Ellicottville 59, Forestville 57 Steven Rowland registered 22 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lift Ellicottville on Monday night.

Leif Jimerson scored 20 points and both he and Rowland knocked down four 3-pointers for the Eagles (10-6). Trailing by one with 35 seconds remaining, Ellicottville missed on an initial attempt to take the lead and had to foul Forestville. The Hornets, though, missed the front end of a 1-and-1, setting up the stage for Rowland’s game-winner.

“He was open, he took it and it went in,” Ellicottville coach Dave McCann said.

Wyatt Chudy hit a pair of insurance free throws in the waning seconds for the Eagles, who have won six of their last seven. After pulling out a seven-point win over Forestville earlier in the year, Ellicottville needed all 32 minutes to secure the season sweep.

“I thought from the six-minute point on in the fourth, the kids really battled hard to get this win,” McCann said. “I don’t think it was our best night, both offensively and defensively, but the kids showed a lot of heart.

“Forestville is a tough, scrappy team. It was back-and-forth. The kids stuck with it and were able to pull it out.”

Gavin Christian led the Hornets with 17 points.

Jimerson joins cousins on Ellicottville’s 1,000-point list

Basketball runs in Linnea Jimerson’s family, so immediately after her 1,000th career point, the Ellicottville senior thought naturally of her family.

With her second basket on Friday night on the road against Franklinville, Jimerson scored point No. 1,000 and 1,001 and joined three cousins on Ellicottville’s list of century-mark scorers.

Kylee Lindell was the Eagles’ second 1,000-point scorer in 1997; then came sisters Janae (2013) and Marissa (2016) Hamilton, the latter going on to break her sister’s mark as the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Meanwhile, Jimerson’s brother, Leif, a sophomore, appears to be on his way to a prolific basketball career as the Eagles’ leading scorer (13.8 per game) in his first year on varsity.

But as the Jimerson’s layup sank in early in the first quarter on Friday, she thought of the two people she first told about her goal to score 1,000 points.

“Honestly I did not know how to react afterwards,” Jimerson admitted. “I kind of just jumped up and down and looked at my teammates immediately and my coach and we met at the center of the court and we all just screamed with excitement. We were happy, but I thought about my grandma and grandpa, who have passed, immediately because I told them my goal ever since I was in seventh grade and I finally got it.”

junior varsity game as an eighth grader — where she scored 21 points — then getting a call-up to varsity the next game.

And she’s been a starter since her freshman year.

“Ever since I got moved up to JV in eighth grade, I wanted to be on varsity and get it,” Jimerson said of the 1,000-point mark.

“Then I scored 21 points in my (first) JV game so I got immediately moved up. I have three other cousins up there starting with Kylee Lindell, Janae Hamilton and Marissa. So I was like, ‘I want to be the next one in our family to get it.’”

Jimerson said Marissa Hamilton, now a sophomore playing at the University at Buffalo, was her biggest role model in basketball.

“She was my teammate and just playing with her and having her push me,” Jimerson said, “and telling me that I was, obviously, an eighth grader, I’m going to be nervous but she pushed me to have confidence and said that I’m a good scorer and when I have the ball in my hands, I need to do my own thing instead of worrying what others are going to think.”

In her first year coaching the ECS girls

varsity, Chelsea Cole has relied on Jimerson as she learned how to handle a varsity team.

“She’s a really hard worker,” Cole said. “She’s extremely coachable.

Coming into this, my first year (coaching) varsity, as a coach, she’s been just so helpful to me. I know she wanted it. I think basketball is her favorite sport, so she just works really hard at it and earned it.”

Jimerson nearly reached 1,000 points in front of a home crowd on Wednesday, but some late-game defense held her three points short. But the upside was, she knew she could get there early in Friday night’s league game.

“I was so happy,” Cole said. “I ran right up to her.

I couldn’t be more proud, she deserves every bit of it. She worked so hard for her 1,000th point.

Jimerson plans to play basketball at Jamestown Community College next season and “after a year or two” attend the University of Tampa to study marine biology.

Official recognition for Jimerson’s 1,000th point, with a ball presentation, will take place before the varsity game on Friday night against Pine Valley.

Jimerson scores 1,000th point in loss to Franklinville

Ellicottville senior Linnea Jimerson reached the 1,000-point mark before Franklinville (9-4) won going away Friday night in CCAA East II girls basketball.

The Panthers won, 75-36. Jimerson came in needing three points to achieve the milestone and hit a pair of layups in the opening minutes en route to 23 points on the night for the Eagles (6-10).

“I’m so proud of her,” first-year Ellicottville coach Chelsea Cole said. “I’m

new coming into the varsity coaching position, but I’ve known her for two years.

She deserves it all — she’s worked really hard for it. She’s a great role model for our whole team, and she’s very coachable.”

Jimerson plans to continue her basketball career at Jamestown Community College.

The Panthers rolled to their sixth straight win behind 28 points from Dani Haskell and 18 from Abby McCoy.

Frewsburg 68, Ellicottville 24 Linnea Jimerson led the Eagles with 13 points eight rebounds, and Cam Earley and Makenna Smith had two steals each in a loss on Wednesday.

Gabby Iuculano led the Bears (11-2) with 23 points and Mikayla Babalski-Jones added 21 points.

HEALTH & FITNESS: GIVE IT TIME

In my line of work, I see and hear from so many individuals that have struggled to attain their goals.

These goals can be anything from weight loss to injury rehab or improving your strength and endurance for a specific sport. My advice to all of them is, “Give it time.”

No matter what

your fitness goal, time, consistency and proper nutrition need to blend together to create the perfect storm.

Ask anyone who has dropped 20 pounds or more by exercising and diet changes. The first couple workouts typically are followed by intense muscle soreness.

And, as you adjust your diet to a healthier routine, good old cravings will kick in.

You will falter and

even fail here and there.

But, if you get back on board, you will see results. Results are earned.

It’s not that we cannot stick to exercise for a long period of time because we’re weak; it’s because we try to do it overnight and on top of that we expect immediate results that don’t happen, that make us give up.

Commitment

to fitness is not something we can just turn on like pulling a switch in our heads.

It’s always a gradual process. You start small and you build up from there, one effort at a time, one day at time.

You have to slowly re-educate yourself and get used to the idea of exercise, incorporate it in your daily life in small ways first, and only then will you be able

to seriously commit to it long-term.

Another thing I say quite regularly to my clients is, “Every expert started out as a beginner.”

So if you made some hefty resolutions that you are struggling to keep, remember that small changes can equal big results and that it is okay to have a bad day, because, every morning you get to start with a clean slate.

Cattaraugus County lawmakers urged Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week to restore Aid and Incentives to Municipalities (AIM) funding to villages and towns cut from his proposed 2019-20 state budget.

Only the villages of Delevan and Portville and four towns — Allegany, Portville, Persia and Dayton — escaped the governor’s AIM axe.

Last year, Cattaraugus County villages received $117,705 in AIM funding and towns got $443,491.

The cities of Olean and Salamanca, which will not see AIM cuts, will receive $2.2 million and $928,000, respectively.

The resolution was co-sponsored by Norman Marsh, R-Little Valley; Barbara Hastings, D-Allegany; and David Koch, D-Salamanca.

All 14 legislators in attendance agreed to be co-sponsors and it passed unanimously.

Marsh, who is also Little Valley mayor, said unless the cuts are restored by the state legislature, his village

would lose about $11,000 in aid. That amounts to about 3 percent of the village’s general fund — not counting the sewer and water fund and the municipal electric utility.

“Seven of the nine villages in the county will lose AIM funding,” Marsh told his colleagues. “Where are we supposed to get our money? A lot of towns will be in the same boat as the villages.”

Statewide, 1,328 towns and villages lost

AIM funding in the governor’s proposed budget; many of the municipalities already have their budgets in place for 2019 and were counting on the AIM funding.

Marsh said the pressure is on state lawmakers to reverse the governor’s proposal.

“He’s doing this to push villages into consolidating with towns,” Marsh said.

That would be a disaster for Little Valley, he said. It would

probably cost the village it’s municipal power status and mean big increases in electric bills.

Legislators Robert Breton, R-Franklinville; Frank Higgins, R-Olean; and Howard VanRensselaer, were absent from the vote.

The resolution seeks restoration of AIM funding for local municipalities where the funding accounts for less than 2 percent of the municipal budget.

Open-air demolition delayed at West Valley Main Process Building

The open-air demolition of the Main Process Building at the West Valley Demonstration Project has been delayed indefinitely.

Contractor CHBWV has been asked by the U.S. Department of Energy to look into cleaning up areas not included in the original Phase I contract while the demolition of the Main Process Building is on hold.

Scott Anderson, CHBWB president and general manager, told members of the West Valley Citizens Task Force on Wednesday the Main Process Building was 95 percent deactivated. “We’ve still got some challenges,” he added.

The last of 416 intermodal containers of debris — from the former vitrification facility that was demolished over the past year — left the WVDP facility in the town of Ashford last week, Anderson said.

Bryan Bower, the Department of Energy director at the West Valley Demonstration Project nuclear cleanup, said that while the Main Process Building was included in the current contract, DOE officials are “rethinking open-air demolition.”

Cleaning up below-grade cells that were not part of the current contract will lessen the amount of radioactive material in the building and keep crews working, Bower said.

Anderson said crews will focus instead on seven ancillary buildings surrounding the Main Process Building. They are also working to rebuild infrastructure including natural gas and electrical lines that are more than 50 years old The U.S. Department of Energy delayed the open-air razing of the Main Process Building — where spent nuclear fuel from nuclear power plants was reprocessed from the mid-1960s until 1972 — following an

unexpected release last year of radioactivity during demolition in Hanford, Wash.

Bower said he could not discuss any timetable for a decision on whether an openair demolition would be carried out.

Anderson told Citizen Task Force member Raymond Vaughn that the Hanford release had left DOE officials nervous over open-air demolition.

He said that Western New York winters make demolition more difficult. The demolition of the vitrification building showed that “maybe you need a structure to work in, maybe not,” he said.

Bower said no decision had been made on whether the demolition would be open-air or not. The DOE is seeking requests for proposals on what to do with below-grade cells.

“There are a handful of cells in the main plant that make us nervous,” Bower said.

Citizen Task Force member Joseph Pati asked whether the hole in the roof left after removal of the remaining stack on the Main Process Building had been repaired.

“To some extent,” replied Anderson.

There are some areas of the roof where officials would like to put a temporary patch to keep water out of the plant.

Bower also said the government shutdown had not impacted the cleanup at the nation’s first commercial nuclear reprocessing plant. The DOE is not among the federal departments involved in the partial shutdown that began Dec. 22.

Work continues toward a preferred alternative for Phase II cleanup at the West Valley site. That draft recommendation is probably two years away.

The Citizens Task Force has called in the past for a full cleanup of the site including removal of underground tanks that once held 600,000 gallons of highly radioactive liquid wastes, as well as the removal of state and NRC-licensed disposal sites.

By Greg Culver Special to the Times Winter has returned to Ellicottville, just in time for one of the biggest parties of the season at HoliMont.

Men’s Day 2019 will be held Friday, Feb. 1 and has a lot to offer all day long, including ski races, sports celebrities paired up with ski race teams, corn hole competitions, adult bike races and other feats of strength.

A silent auction and 50/50 to raise funds for HoliMont’s Phoenix Adaptive Program will also be a part of Men’s Day. The program’s mission is to ensure that every special needs student, no matter their ability, have an opportunity to experience all the fun and excitement that HoliMont and skiing have to offer.

Each full-season program costs $1,050 for nine weeks and $150 for a single full day. Adaptive equipment is also needed.

The annual goal this year is $20,000.

Last year’s Men’s Day raised $5,000.

Party Squad, HoliMont’s house band, will be performing in the lodge after a steak lunch with all the premium fixings.

Kegs of beer, a scotch bar, a bourbon bar and a vodka/caesar bar with all the extras, plus an on-site cigar roller, are sure to start the party and keep it going!

Area sales tax collections rose in 2018 over previous year

Locals are spending more — and local governments are collecting more in sales tax revenue.

Local sales tax collections continued to climb in 2018, growing for the third year in a row, according to a report released Monday by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

Collections across the state of $17.5 billion grew by $872 million, or 5.3 percent.

“Local sales tax collections grew at a faster pace in 2018 than in recent years, boosting local revenues,” DiNapoli said. “Despite the good news, a slowdown in collection growth in the fourth quarter shows that sales tax revenue can be unpredictable.

Local officials should keep a watchful eye on consumer spending and this revenue source and be prepared to react accordingly.”

Most regions in the state saw an increased annual growth rate in

sales tax collections in each of the last three years, with year-overyear growth strong in several regions. Of the 57 counties outside of New York City, 55 saw collections increase, including Cattaraugus and Allegany counties.

Cattaraugus County’s sales tax revenue rose 6.08 percent, from $36.44 million to $38.65 million.

Allegany County’s sales tax revenue rose 8.33 percent from $19.79 million to $21.44 million.

The 2018 Cattaraugus County sales tax report from State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli showed an increase of more than $2.2 million over 2017, Deputy County Treasurer Matt Keller commented Monday.

“And 2017 was higher than in 2016,” Keller said. Like the state, it was the third straight year of significant sales tax increases.

was from the price of fuel, which peaked last year before trending downward for the past several months.

“We had a good year,” Keller said.

“Revenue from rising fuel prices was probably the bulk of it,” he added.

Since the county doesn’t get concurrent reports of specific spending categories, Keller said it’s difficult to pinpoint which sectors of the economy are improving.

With bed tax revenues of more than $861,000, the county’s occupancy tax had a record year in 2018 as well, Keller said. That’s up from $730,000 in 2017.

The largest share of those rooms are in Ellicottville and the Olean area.

That’s another indication of an economy on the upswing, the deputy treasurer indicated.

The first half sales tax revenues to the county in 2018 were $18.8 million, up 6.5 percent from the same period in 2017.

Anna W. Lawrence farming, she worked part time at the Ilex Inn and the Sugar Pine Lodge, both in Ellicottville.

Mrs. Lawrence enjoyed life, animals and birds, but most of all her family and all the people she met.

Obituary Anna W. Lawrence, of Route 242 E., passed away Sunday (Jan. 27, 2019) at Mercy Hospital, in Buffalo, following a brief illness.

Born Dec. 10, 1933, in Hemlock, she was the daughter of Paul and Bridget Nash Gascon. She was married Oct. 10, 1953, to Lyle J. Lawrence, of Springwater, who predeceased her Oct. 7, 2000.

Anna grew up in Hemlock and graduated from Hemlock Central School.

She had many jobs over the years, at Kodak, Rochester Products, Star Dell and dairy farming.

After retiring from

The celebration of MacQueen’s excellence was attended by members of the ASP Nordic Ski Patrol and several deputies from the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Department, as well as a number of other guests and family members.

Several distinguished guests commented on her achievements including Western New York Region Director Dan Meess, Assistant Regional Director Tom Livak and Red House Manager John Snyder.

Livak said the heritage of skiing in the park goes very deep. He said as the Assistant Regional Director, he’s fortunate to be able to focus all his time on Allegany State Park, and part of that is the park’s winter recreation with skiing, snowmobiling and other snow sports.

“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all the dedication the ski patrol members have made since the program began in 2002 here at the park. That was a mission Mary started here and I can’t imagine the program without it,” he said. “The Art Roscoe Ski Trail System is a high caliber system and having you folks there is such an honor and service to our patrons. Our mission here is safe and enjoyable recreation for patrons and what an outstanding group you guys are.”

Training Officer Butch MacQueen said the “National Outstanding Nordic Patroller for 2018” award is the

most recent of Mary’s accomplishments during her 23-year NSP career.

“I don’t think there is a way to actually put into words what this award signifies because it’s not just today’s activities and it’s not just last year’s activities; it’s a culmination of a lot of very, very hard work on the part of this individual over a number of years,” he said.

According to Butch, in order to be the “National Outstanding Nordic Patroller for 2018, Mary was up against the best Nordic Patrollers out of, first, all the regions in the Eastern Division, then all of the 13 divisions worldwide, which includes divisions in North America, a European Division and an Asian contingency.

“The best Nordic Patrollers from all these divisions, including Mary who was the best of the Eastern Division, were put together and judged,” he said. “Out of all those, Mary was chosen as ‘the best of the best,’ which is quite an honor.”

Western New York Region Director Dan Meess said everything [Mary] MacQueen has done is to provide service to the community and to the ski patrol.

“I think Mary’s service is outstanding. In this day and age where you see so many people just looking out for themselves, a lot of people with her experience and talent might come off as a know-itall, but she is very modest,” he said. “Mary shows everybody how to do things without ever appearing like a know-it-all.

She’s very patient and very

knowledgeable and just a tremendous all-around person.

I’m honored to be here with Mary as she’s presented with her award. It couldn’t go to a better person.”

As she accepted the award, MacQueen said she couldn’t have accomplished all that she has without the support of her fellow patrollers.

She said they were always willing to support her and cheer her on including people like Robin Clark who watched her dogs while she was out climbing Mount Washington and at Whiteface Mountain doing avalanche training. She also credited Butch MacQueen for driving the patrollers in the van to take them to training events.

“You guys are the backbone of why I got this award,” she said. “It’s not just my award, it’s everybody’s award because, without a patrol like you, I never could have done it.

“It’s not just one person that makes me want to do something like this,” MacQueen continued. “It’s because you guys are so close and I love this family so much that I would do anything to be with this group. I want to thank you all for it.”

MacQueen is a Deputy Sheriff for the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Department, and a licensed New York State Guide for hiking, camping and outdoor skills. She is also certified by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) as a wilderness searcher and crew boss.

Frigid temperatures can mean frozen pipes

Frigid temperatures are hit the area this week, and the risk of frozen pipes will certainly be an issue in the upcoming days.

According to 2018 State Farm claims data, more money was paid out in New York for winter water losses (including frozen pipes and ice dams) than any other state in the U.S. The total payout for New York claims in 2018 reached more than $37.2 million, with the

average cost per claim at $27,302.00.

The next closest state was Illinois with a total pay-out of 27.7 million for total-pay-out in winter water loss claims.

Nationally, 2018 losses related to frozen pipes totaled more than $270 million, an increase of more than $162 million from 2017.

If the outside temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, water pipes in homes with

insufficient insulation may freeze and break.

Unfortunately, frozen pipes affect 250,000 families each winter.

State Farm provides the following tips to prevent frozen pipes from happening in your home.

When temperatures drop: • A trickle of hot and cold water might be all it takes to keep your pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet

on an outside wall.

• Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature during both day and night.

• Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.

Before you travel: • Set the thermostat in your house no lower than 55 degrees.

• Ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it’s warm enough to prevent freezing.

• Shut off and drain the water system.

If you experience frozen pipes: • If you turn on your faucets and nothing

comes out, leave the faucets turned on and call a plumber.

• Do not use electrical appliances in areas of

Cummings dominates with two gold medals

By Caitlin Croft The second weekend of U14 Excelsior Cup racing was a bit closer to home for most athletes. There were two Slaloms one held at Kissing Bridge in Glenwood and the other held at Buffalo Ski Club in Colden. Great Valley town accepts $50,000 grant for Kill Buck sewer study

By Kellen M. Quigley The Great Valley Town Board at its last regular meeting accepted a grant for $50,000 to cover costs for an engineering study at the Kill Buck sewer system.

“The town initially received two grants, one for $50,000 and one for $33,000,” said Town Supervisor Daniel Brown. “We don’t want the $33,000 one.”

Brown said he talked it over with town engineer Mark Alianello. They noted that the $33,000 grant required a larger matching fund from the town. Brown said the $50,000 grant required only a $2,500 match.

“What I need the board to consider is giving me the OK to do it,” he said, referencing accepting the grant.

Brown said the idea to get the hamlet of Kill Buck a sewer system began several years ago. He said the system would need to hook up with the city of Salamanca’s system, but neither municipality was certain of the system could handle the additional service area.

“The first stage of this is making sure there is enough capacity at Salamanca for us to do it,” Brown explained. “The engineer said there is, but we need documentation to prove it.”

The grant monies would go toward an official engineering study of the system to make sure Salamanca could handle it, Brown said, as well as where and how to lay the system out.

Town board member Sandra Goode wondered what the next step would be after the study if putting in a sewer system could be done.

“Once that’s in place, we can go after more money to try to actually install the system and get it hooked up,” Brown said. “But we can’t go after that until we make sure we can hook it up.”

Town board member Becky Kruszynski said that even if the engineering study is complete and a system in Kill Buck could hook up to Salamanca, it does not commit the town to complete a specific project in the future.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the town board further discussed the plans to put 911 numbers at the homes on

the private drives off Eagle Forest Road, a state access road near Dollar General off Route 219.

“We’d like to call it Schrantz Drive since he’s responsible for it all,” Brown said. The name comes from the original owner of the property the houses are located on, Daniel Schrantz.

A couple months ago, the town first discussed the need for 911 numbers to help emergency responders if they’re called to one of the homes.

Currently, a single address on Route 219 is used for all homes off Eagle Forest Road.

Brown said he and Highway Superintendent Jack Harrington drove up to the homes to have a better idea on what the numbering should be. He said the first, lower driveway services two houses, so they could be numbered without naming the driveway as a road.

“One pole with a sign on the left and a sign on the right designating the house on the left and the house on the right,” Brown said.

Further up at the second driveway, Brown said it services about six homes and would need to be named Schrantz Drive for the appropriate emergency numbering.

“It’s still all private up there, and the only way we could name it is if we permission to do it,” he said. “The road would belong to his daughter since she is the heir because there is no homeowners association.”

Town Attorney Peter J. Sorgi said there are a few different ways a private road is managed afterward.

He said either the primary property owner owns the road and other residents are granted use on it, or all property owners using the road would take equal possession of it.

“She will have essentially just named it that and the town will recognize that as a private road only and assign emergency numbers for that purpose,” Sorgi said.

The town board is expected to approve a resolution at its February meeting where it would officially recognize the road as a private drive and subsequently make sure it’s clear the road would not be maintained by the town.

New York Farm Bureau sets 2019 legislative goals

New York State Farm Bureau President David Fisher outlined the agriculture lobby group’s legislative goals for 2019 in a media call last week.

Income for state farms was $5 billion for 2017 — the latest year for which there is complete data — and is still $1 billion below where it was five years ago, Fisher told reporters.

Net farm income is half what it was in the middle of the decade, he added.

It’s not a pretty picture for the dairy industry, as costs continue to outpace milk prices.

Fisher said the price of milk is a world market.

While New York dairy farmers are struggling, he said he sees “a little bit of strength in the market for fall.” The current price is $18.13 per hundredweight.

Asked what New York state could do for dairy farmers, Fisher replied: “Lower the cost of doing business in New York.”

Reducing regulations can improve farmers’ bottom line. “There’s not much you can do beyond that.”

What about assistance to smaller dairy farms?

Fisher said the state’s funding for promotion and research is very helpful. It helps farmers find efficiencies to get more money out of their production.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s budget proposal calls for hiking aid to localities for agriculture by $5 million to a total of $29 million in 2019-20.

“This is a top priority,” Fisher explained.

“This commitment to much-needed research, promotion and marketing programs supports a wide range of commodities, including dairy, wine, maple, apple, Christmas trees, onions and more.”

Fisher said, “New York Farm Bureau will

firmly make the case that this appropriation is much needed so New York farms can access the latest research available and improve their ability to compete in the marketplace.”

NY Farm Net is another important state program helping agriculture with free and confidential consulting services, Fisher said. “They are counseling (farmers) to get them through these low milk prices.”

Why hasn’t the recently passed U.S. Farm Bill and the U.S. agreement with Canada and Mexico had an impact on milk prices?

While the Farm Bill and Mexican/Canadian NAFTA amendments haven’t had much of an impact on milk prices, there are long-term benefits, he indicated.

“Canada is a small market, so the impact is not going to be immediate,” Fisher said. “It does help the dairy farmers a little.

Farmers look for stability in the market. We’re better off with the farm bill and NAFTA. With stability, we can work our way out of this long term.”

The partial shutdown of the federal government that ended on Saturday did impact farmers in New York and elsewhere, Fisher said. The closure of USDA Farm Service Agency offices hurt farmers as milk programs, loans and tariff payments were delayed for more than a month.

Also, the increase in the minimum wage to $11.10 per hour will impact farmers. The state has a tax credit to help offset some of the increased costs to farmers. Farm Bureau wants to extend those tax credits to maple and apple farmers.

Fisher was also thankful for the proposed $300 million in the state Environmental Fund, which helps farmers pay

for conservation measures to prevent pollution.

The Farm Bureau wants to eliminate farmers paying unemployment insurance for farm workers who come into this country under contract for a short amount of time at harvest, Fisher said. Those workers leave and can’t collect unemployment.

Fisher said the Farm Bureau was also urging that training for animal cruelty be mandated for law enforcement and district attorneys. Funding should also be included in the budget, he added.

Farm Bureau wants to keep the animal abuse laws within the state Department of Agriculture and Markets. “We don’t want to put a criminal target on farmers’ backs,” Fisher said.

Growing hemp under a state program — now legal under the U.S. Farm Bill — will give New York farmers another opportunity to diversify their crops, Fisher said.

Working with Cornell and Cornell Cooperative Extension, farmers have begun pilot programs growing, processing and selling hemp. Farmers, he added, “know how to grow things.”

Small farmers will probably be squeezed out of the production of hemp’s cannabis cousin, marijuana, similar to what happened with medical marijuana because of the large capital expenses up front, the Farm Bureau president said.

“It is important for lawmakers, many of whom are new to the Senate and Assembly this year, to understand not only the economic situation many farmers find themselves in but also the positive impacts farms make to the rural economy and overall well-being of New York State,” Fisher said.

Although she has only competed for two years, Dalton, 13, of Oakville, Ontario, said she will be traveling to Lake Placid for her first Empire State Winter Games later this week.

Dalton said she has been snowboarding for about five

years, but began her winter sports career as a skier.

Looking forward to the competition, it’s something she said she’s thrilled and nervous about.

“It’s a mix of both,” she added. “I’m pretty excited to go and compete.”

The Empire State Winter Games is a multi-day sports event that is used to bring together winter sports athletes from across New York state and beyond.

For 39 years the Empire State Winter Games have

offered a platform for more than 2,100 athletes of all ages to compete in over 30 winter sports events. Some events include alpine, luge, bobsled, cross country, hockey and snowboard cross. The games are located in New York’s Adirondacks and take place from Jan. 31 through Feb. 3.

At Holiday Valley, a party was held to celebrate the arrival of the torch and Dalton’s trip down the mountain. Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at

Holiday Valley, said it was nice that it coordinated with one of the resort’s youth competitions.

“It’s really cool for us,” she said. “It’s a real honor to be chosen as one of the stops for the torch.”

A torch relay is used each year to kick-off the beginning of the Empire State Winter Games. Two torches will travel across New York state, each on separate routes for five days, one beginning in New York City and the other in Western New York The torch headed from Holiday Valley to Jamestown, then north to Gowanda, east to Yorkshire and then to Kissing Bridge Snow Sports, located north of Springville, on Monday before heading to the Buffalo area.

Both torches were scheduled to arrive at their final location in the Adirondacks on Thursday, Jan. 31 during opening ceremonies to set the stage for the Empire State Winter Games.

I happened to drive by a small stream last week and, looking through the heavily falling snow, was amazed to see the area had changed completely.

Many trees were down and a stout dam constructed from their branches.

A large pond filled the stream bed and the typical dome-shaped, carefully crafted pile of sticks and mud of a beaver lodge stuck up in the middle of the pond.

It appeared, true to the saying, that some beavers had indeed been busy.

Beavers, Castor canadensis, are among the largest rodents in the world. They average 23 to 39 inches in length and can weigh up to 60 pounds. Their thick fur is waterproof and their webbed feet propel them through the water, with the large, flat tail serving as a rudder. The tail is also used as an alarm to other beavers; a hard, sharp slap on the water warns others there’s danger near.

Since individual animals have personalities of their own, some bolder beavers have the ability to really irritate you at times. I’ve known several obnoxious ones who used their tails to repeatedly slap the waters where I’m fishing and, of course, this spooks the fish. The irate beaver isn’t interested in saving fish, it’s simply trying to force you to leave. In between powerful tail slaps, they can brazenly swim in tight circles, glaring at you, then another dive and explosion of water.

I’ve glared right back and had some choice words for beavers, but it never seemed to impress them.

The beaver is also known for its oversized front teeth. Those big chompers continue growing an entire lifetime, replacing what is worn away by their chewing.

Coupled with very powerful jaws, beavers can gnaw chips of wood out of a soft tree, like poplar, almost an inch square and a quarter-inch thick or larger.

Though beavers usually dive and disappear when danger threatens, they will fight if cornered. One of the strangest stories I ever heard happened in New Hampshire not long ago.

A close friend of my brother, a young woman weighing about 120 pounds soaking wet, was a very dedicated runner.

She ran every day with her two large dogs and was quite health conscious.

This particular day in early winter she and her dogs dropped down into a small valley and, lo and behold, there in the middle of the road was a beaver industriously dragging a 10 foot, thickly limbed, aspen branch across to the dam on the other side of the highway.

When the two dogs saw the beaver only 20 yards ahead of them they bolted forward to the attack, their jaws snapping. The slight woman was jerked off her feet and, unfortunately, had the short leashes wrapped around her hand and wrist. The straining dogs dragged her forward

rapidly, constricting the leash tightly around her hand; she was unable to let go.

Before she knew what was happening she was the center of a swirling, tangled melee of leaping, growling dogs, snagging branches, twisted leashes and one very angry beaver.

Now, you may not think it, but a beaver’s tail can be a powerful weapon and those teeth, large and razor sharp, can bite through things other than wood.

In this tangled battle, two dogs, jogger and beaver all literally touching one another, the beaver chomped down on the poor woman’s knee, severing cartilage, tendons and scouring bone. It bit the dogs as well while simultaneously knocking the tar out of them all with its tail. It was over in seconds, the victorious beaver diving over the bank and into the water, the girl and dogs left to take stock of their wounds.

The single bite to her knee was very serious and painful; she couldn’t stand and was bleeding heavily. Luckily, within minutes, a car appeared at this incredible scene, untangled her from the dogs, put a tourniquet on the leg, lifted her into the car and rushed to the hospital. The surgeries needed to repair the knee were extensive and it was two years before she started running again.

I don’t believe the dubious honor of being perhaps the only individual on earth to ever

have been seriously bitten by a beaver was one she cared to claim.

Beavers are welladapted for their aquatic life; having an oily, waterproof fur and nostrils equipped to close underwater, as do their ears. Not to be outdone, beaver eyes have a transparent membrane to protect them when submerged. Beavers can remain underwater for 15 minutes. Add their webbed feet and rudder-like tail and it’s easily seen how very much at home in the water they are.

Not all beavers build lodges in the center of their ponds. Many beavers live in larger streams and rivers. In these circumstances they dig holes in the banks; usually, the entrance is underwater and the beaver tunnels back a few feet and excavate a larger living room, lined with foliage.

Beavers consume bark, leaves, twigs, grasses and other aquatic plants. They prefer aspen, poplar, willow and soft maple trees. I’ve seen the bark eaten completely off the trunks of large trees they’ve fallen.

Beavers mate from January to March. They have four kits weighing 9 to 21 ounces; the young are weaned in only two weeks. The young beavers stay with mom and dad until 2 years old, then leave to find their own homes. Young beavers will travel some distances to find a mate of their own when they turn 3.

Beavers can have a tremendous impact on the local ecosystem. If their dam floods your property it’s a problem indeed; they can be hard to get rid of.

Originally, beaver dams helped open up areas in thick virgin forests. Their dams flooded the forest floor killing trees and letting in sunlight. Over the years the ponds or small lakes collected fallen leaves and other silts.

Once the beavers had exhausted the available food supply they abandoned the dam and moved on to another location. The abandoned dam soon broke and its bottom, now bare and covered with the highly fertilized silt quickly blossomed into a lush meadow. Their new dam repeated the cycle.

Beavers are a unique animal and fun to watch if you’re not fishing.

Hopefully, you know a little more about them now.

However, I don’t suggest “tangling” with one, pun intended!
