It’s the most wonderful time of the year, especially for the kids, and hopefully some adults, who have the rest of 2019 off from school or work.

In between times of family and community celebration, there’s plenty of opportunities for seemingly endless fun over this holiday break.

You can hit the slopes at HoliMont or Holiday Valley.

Both ski resorts are open and in full swing.

Choose from numerous lifts and slopes, warm up in the lodge and then head back out and do it all over again with beautiful scenes of the surrounding Ellicottville area.

Holiday Valley Tubing Company has up to 22 lanes, each 900 feet long with a drop of 100 feet. Some lanes are single width while others are wider group lanes to allow for linking up with friends.

Looking for something that’s fun for everyone and all you have to do is sit down, hang on and experience the exhilaration of pure winter fun?

Holiday Valley Tubing Company, a tubing park just a five-minute drive from downtown Ellicottville located on Route 242, is expected to open this weekend, weather dependent, just in time for the Christmas holiday break.

“If all goes according to plan, the opening day will be Thursday the 19th,” said Jane Eshbaugh, director of marketing at Holiday Valley, last week.

The snow tubing park will once again offer 22 lanes that are a 100-foot drop down tracks 900 feet long.

Along with single-width lanes are three group lanes

which makes our snowmaking system more efficient.”

The biggest renovations in recent history came last year when the old main handle tow was replaced with a brand new conveyor lift. So again this year, just grab your tube, step on and away you go up to the top.

This will allow for more capacity, which means more rides for everyone.

“It helps make the flow go a lot better and you can get people up there and fill all the lanes before we say go so there’s more people all going down at the same time,” Eshbaugh added.

Additionally last year, three state-of-the-art HKD fan guns and six new HKD tower guns were installed for making more snow in a shorter time frame, using less energy.

No snow is no problem at Holiday Valley

Thanks to a team of dedicated snowmakers, Holiday Valley Ski Resort is able to keep snow on its slopes when there is green grass showing elsewhere. As long as the temperatures are cold enough to make snow, crew members work around the clock to ensure guests have “the white stuff” to enjoy skiing and snowboarding during their stay at the resort.

He usually covers the midnight to 8 a.m. shift.

“It all seems to happen on the night shift when the temperatures are colder. We’re here all night long and sometimes we stay during the day. It all depends on what’s happening on the mountain,” he said. “I have a great crew and we are like family. We have to make a lot of ‘seat of the pants’ calls during the night time shift, but we get it done. In the morning when the resort opens, the slopes are ready for the guests.”

Ellicottville is Aldrich’s hometown. It’s where he grew up and went to school. Prior to attending college, he worked at Holiday Valley. After college, he returned to the resort and joined the snowmaking crew part-time during the ski season. In the warmer months, he runs a paint company.

The control room is the central brain of the operation.

Aldrich said when he started snowmaking at Holiday Valley 22 years ago, there was one computer screen from where they pretty much just ran the pumps. He said they used to drive down to the pump house to see what the pressures were and, if something happened down there, they’d have to tweak it and come back up to the control room to look at the monitor.

“Before the automated system came in, there was a lot of driving around,” he said. “I about teared up the first time

Aldrich said they’ve gone from producing 4,000 gallons a minute to 8,000 gallons a minute, which they can go through pretty quickly. He said the water in the pipelines does not freeze because it’s underground below the frostline. When the guns go on, the water goes up to the surface and when they shut off, the water drains. He said a gun or drain may occasionally freeze but, other than that, the water is always moving and moving water doesn’t freeze.

Although most of the water that goes into their snowmaking system comes from Great Valley Creek at the bottom of the hill, Aldrich said Spruce Lake at the top of the mountain is a reservoir that provides a secondary water source. He said they have an 8,000 gallon a minute water capacity, which is 4,000 gallons from the creek and 4,000 gallons from the lake.

“When I first started, we had miles of hose that we would drag out and hook up to portable guns and move around manually,” he said. “We still use portable guns to fill in the gaps and areas where we don’t have automation but, for the most part, we have snow guns pretty much everywhere in the areas they are needed. And, we’ve gone to push-button starts with shorter hoses.”

Aldrich said a lot less grooming was done back then because they were moving the guns around more. Now, they basically create big piles of snow and the groomers come in and put it where it’s needed.

Experience and a two-year associate’s degree in Ski Area Technology at the State University of New York at Morrisville led him to his current position eight years ago as one of the supervisors.

“I started out as a regular snowmaker and basically put my time in, which led to this position,” he said. “You might say I started in the trenches. I still enjoy the trenches because I’m still on the mountain with the guys making good quality skiing snow for our guests. There’s really not any place I’d rather be.”

With the modern computerized snowmaking system, Aldrich can now see the water flows and pressures from the control room. He’s monitoring the screens, firing hundreds of automated snow guns, turning on pumps and firing compressors.

“I’m honored to be a snowmaker and to have this amazing snow system to use,” he said. “My job is to get the water online and up on the mountain to the snow guns because that’s where the ‘acre-feet’ of snow comes from.”

According to Aldrich, the term “acre-feet of snow” means one square-acre of snow that is one-foot deep.

He said, on average, they cover an area the size of three football fields with a foot of snow in an hour.

“It was difficult working with charcoal and pastel to create a drawing so realistic,” she said. “I always thought drawings would go quicker than paintings, but to do this particular drawing took a really long time. Every squareinch demanded the same amount of attention.

After I finished the drawing, I thought it was pretty good so I entered it in the ARC competition.”

When asked how she could part with such a beautiful and breathtaking piece of artwork, Fox’s response was, “Truthfully, when something leaves my studio, it’s not really mine anymore and I’m on to the next piece.

I’m always working on something new, and whatever I’m working on is a special thing.”

Photo submitted Local artist Barbara Fox recently received a prestigious “purchase award” from the Art Renewal Center at this year’s International ARC Salon Exhibition. Her detailed charcoal and pastel drawing “Parting with Illusions” was purchased by the center for their collection and is now on public display at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Spain.

According to Fox, she enters a lot of competitions throughout the year in mediums ranging from watercolor and oil painting to pastels and charcoal drawing.

She said there are not many competitions for drawing that she knows of, but when she discovered ARC had a category for drawing, she entered her charcoal and pastel artwork in the drawing category.

She said the focus of the Art Renewal Center is “realistic” artwork, so they are looking at not just the creativity in the image, but also the artist’s technical ability in painting, drawing or sculpting in realistic artwork.

The drawing that won Fox the purchase award was that of Quincey, a young woman from Ellicottville who agreed to model for her. Fox, who has known this young woman since she was a little girl, said she had an idea for the drawing.

“We agreed to meet at her grandparent’s pond, but it happened to be a very cold day in May 2018,” she said. “I thought, ‘There’s no way she’s going to get in that water.’”

To Fox’s surprise, Quincey was brave enough to get into the cold pond. Then she took lots of photographs of the young woman in different poses in the water. Fox said she’s done quite a few drawings and paintings of her just from that one photography session.

She said one pose, in particular, stood out among the rest.

“What I originally had in mind was not what really struck me when I looked at my photographs afterwards,” she said.

“That photograph of her just looking in the water with her hair coming down was something I thought would be a really beautiful drawing.”

Local artist Barbara Fox recently received a purchase award from the Art Renewal Center (ARC) at this year’s International ARC Salon Exhibition.

Her artwork will be on public display at the MEAM (European Museum of Modern Art) in Barcelona, Spain, along with 98 other artists’ works from around the globe.

The show opened at the MEAM in Barcelona Dec. 6 and will continue through Feb. 2 before it returns to Sotheby’s in New York City where it will be on exhibit from July 17-27.

Fox said she was honored to receive such a prestigious award. She said her detailed, 10-by21-inch charcoal and pastel drawing “Parting with Illusions” was

purchased by ARC for $3,800 and is now in their collection.

“I’m really honored because this is one of the top exhibits of realistic artwork. I paint very realistically, but I’ve never really put myself in that realm of ‘hyper-realist’ artists,” she said. “I want to paint and draw in realism, but also have a beautiful image that people recognize as a realistic piece of art, rather than people wondering if it’s a photograph or a painting.”

This is not her first international competition. Fox said she has participated in a number of them, but this particular competition is pretty special because they not only accept artwork from around the world, but they also present exhibits all over the world.

Dekdebrun’s Apex Store offers unique equipment to Ellicottville shoppers

Tucked up on the second level of a storefront on 18 Washinton St. sits an Ellicottville classic and longtime gem — Dekdebrun’s Apex Store.

Originally, a ski store with all equipment imaginable, owner FDHSA decided to size down and retire.

After 30 some years in the business, Greg Dekdebrun decided to retire.

However, he quickly found that he missed the business too much and decided to open an Apex exclusive store.

Dekdebrun started selling Apex, a 100 percent carbon lightweight ski, 13 years ago. In fact, he was the first Apex dealer ever and rose to become the third-largest store dealer in the US. When Apex heard the original Dekdebrun’s was closing, they were upset and disappointed.

This led to Dekdebrun working out a deal and opening Dekdebrun’s Apex Store, where he exclusively sells Apex boots and skis.

Dekdebrun said business is already booming this year, especially with the new models of boots available.

ECS ski team sets high hopes as season nears in January

Every season starts the same, even for the defending state champions, in ski racing.

The Ellicottville girls alpine ski team has won three consecutive NYSPHSAA championships, from 2017-19, and last year, then-sophomore Logan Fredrickson earned her school’s first individual state titles in the sport. She won the slalom, giant slalom and the combined overall state championship.

Now a junior, Logan and her twin sister Hayly lead an experienced group that will look to compete at states again, but that starts with training and practice in the early winter months.

“I treat every year the same,” said Kelly Fredrickson, the Eagles’ coach and Logan and Hayly’s father. “You try to get them as ready to the best of their ability and every year we start over. It really makes no difference that they’ve won in the past or not. They still work hard and focus on what we’ve got to do to improve and go from there.”

The high school ski season doesn’t start until the new year, when Ellicottville

has its first home race on Jan. 8.

Ellicottville has four home races at Holiday Valley (all at 6 p.m.), running the giant slalom Jan. 8 and Feb. 6 and slalom on Jan. 22 and Feb. 12.

This year’s state championship is set for Feb. 24-25 at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua. In order to qualify for states, a skier must be on the first-place overall team in the section or be one of up to the 12 lowest places in the section during in-season qualifying.

In total, Ellicottville has 11 team members. Cece and Emmylu Carls, McKenna Kaleta and Courtney Sexton all return to the ECS girls team, while senior Adrian deOrbe leads the boys squad looking to return to states.

“I expect him to make states this year and hopefully he has a better result this year over last year,” Fredrickson said deOrbe.

“Most of the other boys are younger. That would be the main objective (for the boys) this year is having Adrian go to states.”

While it’s difficult to ski outside of the winter for obvious reasons, involvement in other sports keeps the racers start the season with strong conditioning.

“A lot of the girls they do other sports,” Fredrickson said. “Hayly and Logan are in track in the spring and soccer in the fall, McKenna she’s in track, Courtney plays softball, a couple younger girls play basketball so that kind of interferes a little bit with practice. It all helps them condition and get ready to go.”

The winter high school season begins in November, so the Eagles have trained indoors and recently started practicing on snow.

“We started practice this week (the week of Dec. 3) on snow,” Fredrickson noted. “Hayly and Logan, we skied over Thanksgiving up in Canada at Tremblant.

The next several weeks we’ll be trying to get everything up to where they’re supposed to be in practice.

“It all depends,” he added

of how much the team can practice. “This year, the weather’s helping us out a lot. We started practice in the second week of November, working in the weight room and stuff and conditioning.

But to get on snow this week has been great. We’ve had a lot of seasons where we haven’t been able to get on snow this early.”

A pair of players Ellicottville made the Big 30 Soccer All-Star teams, as announced in the Olean Times Herald on Monday.

Ellicottville sophomore Mandy Hurlburt both made the Big 30 Girls Soccer All-Star team, while Ellicottville senior Jack Snyder made the Big 30 Boys team.

Hurlburt, a sophomore forward, led the Eagles’ offense with 16 goals and made three assists.

She also was a first-team league all-star in helping Ellicottville post a 10-4-3 record this year.

Snyder, an Ellicottville senior midfielder, was a back-to-back selection to the Big 30 Boys Soccer All-Star team. The key player to controlling the middle for the Eagles, Snyder helped Ellicottville reach overtime of the Section 6 Class C semifinals this season.

ECS welcomes new therapy dog to school

Three presentations from various members of the Ellicottville Central School staff took place during the regularly scheduled Ellicottville Board of Education meeting on Dec. 10.

The first presentation was from Joe Prior, the faculty lead for the newly implemented Student Mentor Program. Prior attended the meeting to answer any questions the board had about the program.

Currently, the New York State Mentor Program hosts nine mentors (students in grades 10-12) and nine mentees (students in grades 4-6) on every first, third and fourth Tuesday of the month. The program is fully funded through New York state and the district is only responsible for any printer costs. Mentors and mentees were nominated through administration and staff referrals and finalized through student support meetings.

According to Prior the program, “benefits for students academically, but socially as well.” He went on to state, “the program allows relationships to build across grade levels.

This is important for a school as small as ours because many different grade levels interact on a day by day basis.”

Board member Connie Hellwig asked Prior if he sees the program expanding. He said, “As of right now, the nine pairs seem to be a good, manageable group. The most I would do is 12 groups in one session.

In the future, I would be willing to do more if we split it into two groups.”

Overall the program has been perceived as a success as both mentors and mentees are showing growth.

The second presentation was made by Parent Teacher Organization members Diana Olson and

Katie Kellen. The PTO bought a giant scrim and a stand for the school. The maroon and white scrim proudly displays large eagle heads and ECS. The purpose is for any photo opportunities during events and to spread some school spirit.

“It’s been an ongoing struggle trying to find places to take pictures when a student receives an award or does something noteworthy,” Superintendent Bob Miller commented. “This [scrim] is the perfect addition to the school.”

Elementary Principal, Maren Bush, wrapped up the last of the presentations by introducing the newest member of the Eagle family. Toby, a Norwegian Elkhound and poodle mix, has been going under rigorous training to become a certified therapy dog. He recently enjoyed his first day at ECS giving staff, administration and students some much needed “puppy love.”

Bush stated, “the feedback has been wonderful as it seems all staff and students are falling in love with Toby. The teachers have been really supportive by teaching their students when and how to approach Toby. Overall, Toby has been a really good boy as he doesn’t bark or become too hyper. He is still a puppy and we are continuing our training with him.”

It appears that ECS staff and students alike are receptive and appreciative of Toby.

AFTER THE presentations, Superintendent Bob Miller updated the board on some exciting news. At a previous meeting, business teacher Cathie Nason presented to the board on a possible grant opportunity to implement Personal Finance as a graduation requirement. Miller stated that Nason received the

Next, Principal Erich Ploetz updated the board on the success of the Senior Citizen luncheon.

There was around 80 total participates and he thanked Vicky Williams, lunch staff, ECS’s student council, custodial staff and teachers for their hard work and dedication with the event.

Ploetz also updated the board on something exciting and new going on at ECS: Pancake Day. The idea was inspired by 7th grader Jayce Pearl who simply wanted more pancake breakfasts at ECS. In response, Ploetz and Pearl compromised by promoting locker clean up, lock usage on lockers and overall cleanliness in return for a pancake day.

“It looks like they are going to reach their goal,” he said. “Overall, we have

seen an increase in the cleanliness of the middle school hallways.”

Elementary Principal Maren Bush announced that four ECS students will be featured in the Annual Juried Art Exhibition at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts as St. Bonaventure University.

Student work that will be displayed were created by Millie Nelthrope, Audrey Mecham-Williams, Nora Santiago and Blaze Wier.

Bush also discussed a Character Education Concert held at ECS

Campbell’s performance, “I want to be a Superhero!” focused on eliminating bullying from schools.

“The overall program was a huge success,” Bush said. “We had kids jumping up and down and screaming in excitement.

I think the message was well-received among students and staff. I had staff emailing me afterward talking about how it was the best event they’ve seen in years.”

It’s a few days before Christmas, and Meg’s grandfather is hosting a scientific conference on owls at the Caerphilly Inn. Most of the family are there helping out, but an unexpected severe snowstorm traps the conference-goers in the hotel, and one of the visiting ornithologists is murdered.

Even if Caerphilly is able to clear the roads in time, Chief Burke doesn’t want the various suspects to scatter to half a dozen continents before he identifies the killer, so there’s a very real possibility that none of them will make it home for Christmas . . . at least not unless Meg comes to the rescue.

There is no functional space in the back of the property for a dumpster to be placed this is why a disposal system was required in addition to a few totes in the rear of the building.

ELLICOTTVILLE — Mr. William “Bill” Osbaldeston, 67, of Jefferson Street, Ellicottville, died Sunday (Dec. 15, 2019) at home, following a long illness.

Born Oct. 9, 1952, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, he was the

William ‘Bill’ Osbaldeston son of the late James “Bernie” and Joan Crawford Osbaldeston.

He was a dual citizen of both the U.S. and Canada.

Mr. Osbaleston attended high school in Hamilton and came to Ellicottville in 1977.

He served as the innkeeper at the Edelweiss Lodge for over 35 years, retiring in 2014.

He was a member of Holiday Valley Resort and the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce.

Bill enjoyed traveling and was an avid skier and golfer.

Surviving are two sisters, Diane (Randy) McKune of Smithville, Ontario, Canada and
