HOLIDAY VALLEY GEARING UP FOR 2018-19 SKI SEASON

Automation has the advantage of quick startups and shutdowns, so even if favorable snowmaking temperatures exist for just a couple of hours, the system can make snow efficiently.

The Klix system also has weather stations that monitor temperature and humidity, so the guns can automatically and individually adjust to changes. The result is a better quantity and quality of snow made with less energy.

“We also added more snowmaking to the Tubing Park. New York state came up with a program to encourage ski areas across the state to create more efficient snowmaking to save energy and, although we were already very efficient, we replaced some of the guns at the park that will be even more efficient,” Eshbaugh said.

Eshbaugh said they are going to add three “fan guns” that look like a giant cannon and are portable, so they can be moved to the exact spot where they are needed. She said three are being installed at the Tubing Park and one at the main resort that they will use in certain spots, like the base of slopes where more snow is needed.

According to Eshbaugh, there are a lot more improvements beyond the snowmaking system. She said the grooming crew has added a new PistenBully 100 groomer to their fleet of six PistenBully 600s.

She said this machine is more maneuverable.

It has a smaller blade and tiller for shaping and maintaining terrain park features and other areas that require finer work, including shaped snow learning terrain for beginners. The new groomer also has an attachment for setting one or two cross-country tracks on the resort’s 15 kilometers of cross-country trails.

“We have some trails along the golf course and some that go across the ridge from Cindy’s all the way over to Spruce Lake,” she said. “Those are all natural areas where we don’t make snow so, weather permitting, if there’s a good amount of snow cover, we’ll be able to set track on those trails.”

Slippery Streets is an integral part of Holiday Valley’s beginner’s terrain.

Eshbaugh said a new conveyor lift, much like a moving sidewalk people see in an airport, will replace the existing handle tow. She said this will make the trip up the hill much more accessible and enjoyable for beginners, especially snowboarders.

“We also added another conveyor lift at the Tubing Park where we had two handle tows,” she said.

“Basically, if you’re at the Tubing Park, you’ll be able to take more slides down the hill in your allotted time.”

This is mostly due to the $3.4 million the resort has invested in upgrades, including improvements to their automated snowmaking system, a conveyor lift on the beginner’s slope and several “tree trails” for kids, as well as a new groomer and shuttle van.

Jane Eshbaugh, director of marketing at Holiday Valley, said there are lots of projects going on in preparation for the upcoming ski season.

She said Holiday Valley has the most snowmaking guns available in this region, and the resort has added 14 new automated guns that will be part of the automated system already in service. She said the automated controllers make it possible to control all the guns from a central location at the same time.

“We also have another 100 high-efficiency snowmaking guns that are not automated at this time, but are expected to be in the automated system in the future,” she said.

“We have just purchased many of the guns that will be exchanged for some of our older guns. The new guns will be more energy efficient and use less energy. The ones we had were already very good, but these are even better.”

summer to increase the area available for woods skiing and riding.

Eshbaugh said they also created three fun, little trails called “Tree Trails” that run alongside the main slopes through the trees for the children’s program lessons.

Weather permitting, the Holiday Valley snowmaking crew will get started in mid-November for the targeted opening date of Friday, Nov. 23, right after Thanksgiving.

Holiday Valley is Western New York’s largest year-round resort featuring 60 slopes and trails, 13 lifts, three base lodges, slope-side lodging and dining, conference facilities, an 18-hole golf course, a treetop aerial adventure park, a mountain coaster and a summer pool complex.

Ellicottville Distillery hosted its inaugural Punkin’ Chunkin’ event Nov. 4 on the grounds of the facility at 5462 Robbins Road. Team Urban Siege launched pumpkins from their new trebuchet, the North American Sliding Axle Whipper (NASAW).

Owner Jason Nichols, of Buffalo, said the machine, kept at Wendel’s Poultry Farm in East Concord, is designed to throw pumpkins weighing from 8–10 pounds and the average distance is around 2,100 feet. Before the camera could capture it, the pumpkin was flying through the air at approximately 200–300 mph and was a tiny dot in the sky.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS ECS drama club to find Neverland with ‘Peter Pan JR.’

By Louisa Benatovich, Student Reporter As the winter months grow nearer, Ellicottville middle schoolers attempt to stave off winter blues with the joy of theatre.

Re-enacting J.M. Barrie’s perennial classic, this 30-student group of 6th, 7th and 8th graders is working tirelessly to bring Disney’s “Peter Pan JR.” to life.

After weeks of singing, dancing and countless after-

school hours spent onstage, these musically-inclined middle schoolers are finally on the home stretch.

With performances set for Nov. 14 and 15 at 6:30 p.m. in “The Ward” auditorium, these last few days are crucial in perfecting Ellicottville’s take on the classic storyline.

Crystal Wilder, the musical’s director, said she is pleased with the progress of her troupe.

“Watching the students grow in their creative, artistic and dramatic capabilities is richly rewarding in that this is the only opportunity many of them will ever have to act on stage,” she said. “It’s a joy to watch the many facets of a staged musical come together in the final production.”

Ellicottville boys soccer junior forward Jack Snyder, senior midfielder Brennan Finn and sophomore defender Noah Steinbroner all made the first-team all-stars in the CCAA East division, which released its postseason honors this week.

Butler and sophomore goalie Jamison Caldwell made honorable mention.

The Eagles finished second in the division with a record of 7-2-1 and was 10-7-1 overall, finishing in the Section 6 Class D championship game.

REMEMBERING 100 YEARS SINCE END OF WORLD WAR I

By Kellen M. Quigley This Nov. 11 will be remembered not only as a day to honor American armed service members but as the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Following the end what was called at the time the “war to end all wars” and the Allied nations’ victory over the Central Powers, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first Armistice Day in 1919 with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 a.m.

In November of 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation” in order to ensure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on Nov. 11, not only preserving the historical significance of the date, but helping focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve for the common good.

In memory of those who died in the service of their country in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and in 1960. The plaque was donated by the Ischua Valley Exchange Club in 2006.

Great Valley In Honor and Memory — Located at the intersection of Humphrey Road (County Route 18) and Salamanca Sugartown Road (New York State Route 98), on the left when traveling south on Humphrey Road. In honor and memory of the men and women of this township who answered the call of their country.

Salamanca In Memory of Our Dead Comrades — Located on Lindwood Avenue off of Wildwood Avenue, the marker is at the front of Wildwood Cemetery.

Outside of Veterans Memorial Park on Broad Street are two memorial markers: Dedicated to those from the Salamanca area — “Dedicated to those from the Salamanca area who gave their lives in the Indo-China War. Also to all other people from all nations who have died there 1961–1973.”

From the Mountains fo Afghanistan — “From the mountains of Afghanistan and deserts of Iraq these men and women gave devotion and sacrifice.

They are worthy of much greater recognition than words can say. Let us pay tribute to the heroism of those who served and those who gave all. We are forever grateful.”

County VA services director availability in November As the director of Cattaraugus County Veterans Services, Steve McCord is extending his availability to outside locations throughout the county for the benefit of veterans and their families.

McCord is making himself available to discuss VA benefit laws, VA healthcare or any concerns and questions veterans or their families may have.

On Nov. 7, McCord will be at the American Legion in Gowanda from 1:30–4 p.m.

On Nov. 14, McCord will be at the American Legion in Randolph from 10 a.m. to noon.

Cynthia L. Kiersz SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Cynthia L. Kiersz, 68, of Southport, N.C., and formerly of Batavia, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 25 in North Carolina.

She was born July 7, 1950, in Batavia, N.Y., a daughter of the late Stanley and Sophia Cichocki Adamczyk.

After graduating from Notre Dame High School, Cynthia married Kevin Kiersz, who survives.

They started a family in Batavia, N.Y. In the mid1980s, they relocated to Ellicottville, N.Y., and continued to raise their children. After retirement, they moved to Southport.

Cindy spent her life committed to her husband, Kevin, three children, six grandchildren, family, friends and the Catholic Church.

She always put her family first and was there to listen and give advice in her own considerate, warm and loving way. She is well loved and will be missed by everyone she touched.

Besides her husband, Cindy is survived by her children, Steven (Jennifer) Kiersz of North Carolina, Tina (David) Forthman of Salamanca, N.Y., and Erica (Mark) Mansmith of North Carolina; a sister, Kathleen Heywood of Batavia; and six grandchildren.

Family and friends are cordially invited to share in her Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at Resurrection Parish, 18 Ellicott St., Batavia, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Cindy’s name to a charity of the donor’s preference. HEALTH & FITNESS: Compound vs. isolated exercises

Exercise selection can virtually make or break a workout program. If you aren’t choosing the correct exercises, you are going to have a hard time reaching your goals and seeing progress.

Often, beginners think that the more exercises they can do, the better. After all, hitting a muscle from every angle imaginable must mean you are training it in the best possible manner right?

Wrong.

Isolated exercises are great for minor tweaking once you have already established your goals; however, for those looking to make significant

workout possible.

Another reason why compound exercises are superior is that you are hitting more muscle fibers with each lift and therefore required to spend less time in the gym.

Now, who doesn’t want more results in less time?

By using compound exercises, you can perform three to five total exercises per session, stress your system enough to encourage muscular destruction and then get out and allow your body time to recoup.

By spending less time in the weight room you will grant yourself more time to pay attention to other aspects of your training such as cardio and flexibility.

Isolated exercises simply will not give you the biggest bang for your buck because they do not target that many muscle fibers. Take a bench press versus a tricep kickback.

The bench press is going to work your pec muscles, triceps and your deltoids with your biceps acting like a stabilizer. The kickback will pretty much only target your triceps.

Now, which one do you think will provide you with the most growth? Obviously, the former will. By choosing compound exercises to make up the majority of your routine, you will be sure you are getting the most intense

Stretching is often the most forgotten factor in fitness but is actually very vital to proper performance. By doing this not only are you reducing your risk of injuries, but you are also increasing the range of motion in which you can perform your exercises through.

On a side note, always perform your stretching at the end of your workouts, when your muscles are warm and supple.

When trying to determine whether or not an exercise is isolated or compound, take a good look and try and figure out how many different muscles you are targeting.

If it’s two or more, then it’s a compound movement.

“It was just so much water so fast that the drainage out by the driveway couldn’t handle that much that quickly,” he said.

During the meeting, Miller thanked the maintenance staff for their excellent job in cleaning up the flood damage.

In addition to repairs to the lower level, Miller said the drainage out front needs to be

to be freed up so when a decision is made these projects, it happens in the most transparent way possible. He said insurance will only cover so much of the repairs as the school is not in the floodplain and therefore does not carry added insurance for flooding.

In addition to the damage from the flood, the public announcement (PA) system is in need of repair. He said this will take some time to find the proper parts as it is an antiquated system.

Miller said doing these repairs now would save the taxpayers money in the long run. The board

Five years ago, the Cattaraugus County Legislature was ready to approve the demolition of the former County Museum and Board of Elections across Court Street from the County Center.

Today, a not-for-profit group, Citizens Advocating Memorial Preservation (C.A.M.P.), owns what has come to be known as the Civil War Memorial Building. Its fundraising is geared toward maintenance and long-term capital projects.

“It will let people know what the building is all about,” C.A.M.P. president Thomas Stetz, of Allegany, said of the familiar blue and yellow historic roadside marker.

“We had to submit quite a lot of information about the building, then we were limited to the number of characters on each line of the marker,” Stetz said.

C.A.M.P. was the lone bidder for the building when county lawmakers decided to sell it last year.

The building was dedicated in 1914 as a memorial to Cattaraugus County residents who fought in the Civil War. It was used as the County Museum until the early 2000s.

Stetz became involved in the effort to save the Civil War Memorial after reading about it in the Olean Times Herald.

Later, Mark Dunkleman, an author and historian who has written extensively on Cattaraugus County’s 154th Regiment, which fought in the Civil War, shared C.A.M.P.’s fight to save the monument with descendants of the 154th in his monthly newsletter.

Spencer Morgan, an Allegany native now working in the SUNY Fredonia development office, is in charge of fundraising and grants.

Morgan had a relative in the 154th, Oscar Wilber.

The annual meeting of descendants of the 154th Regiment was held this year outside the Civil War Memorial Building on the weekend of the Little Valley Bicentennial.

“That’s probably the largest group of people gathered outside that building since it was dedicated in 1914,” Stetz said.

Much of the current fundraising is going toward annual heating and insurance costs, Stetz said.

“We’ve got help from all different parts of the country, not just Cattaraugus County,” Stetz said. Much of that is thanks to publicity by Dunkleman, he added.

“We have a major grant pending from the state’s Consolidated Funding Application,” Stetz said. “It’s a mid-size capital project through the Council on the Arts for $50,000 for an engineering study.”

The study will be needed for subsequent grant applications, Stetz said. “It opens the doors for other grants, step by step, leading up to a big one.”

Other grant applications have been made to the Landmark Society of Western New York and the Cattaraugus Regional Community Foundation, he said.

“We’re trying to keep the spotlight on the building,” Stetz said.

There is an online fundraising section on the group’s website, cattcomemorial.com. The group’s Facebook page features regular events.

“When we first got involved, we stood ready to help the county,” Stetz said.

When it became apparent that the county wanted out, C.A.M.P. stepped up.

“We’re reaching out to some longshots for funding too,” Stetz admitted. “Maybe one out of 100 of them will pan out.”

Stetz added: “At least it’s not sitting there waiting to be demolished.”

The open house featured Elliott and Michael Hutten of Hog-Shed Studio Pottery and Robin Zefers Clark of Brookside Studio Watercolors who welcomed

the public to their studios.

For over 36 years, the Huttons have been Art lovers from all producing functional over the area had the and decorative stoneware opportunity to shop for out of Hog-Shed Studio unique, one-of-a-kind Pottery. Elliott creates pottery pieces, as well as each of her pottery pieces original watercolor and with consistency and colored pencil paintings, craftsmanship by hand with a potter’s wheel or slab roller and simple tools. New this year was an assortment of 2018 Holiday Ornaments.

Over the past two years, Elliott and HogShed Studio Pottery have received some well-deserved recognition. In 2017, she won “First Place in Clay” at the Allentown Art Show, and the following year, she was recognized by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council as the 2018 Distinguished Artist of the Year.

“Many of our customers have become good friends throughout the years, so Artist Robin Zefers Clark and her Golden Retriever, Cutter, I look forward to each Holiday Open House as a greet visitors at her studio where she creates original watercolor paintings, portraits and commissioned works. chance to see old friends

Local watercolor artist Robin Zefers Clark works out of Brookside Studio Watercolors, just down the road from Hog-Shed. Robin said she has been a part of the East Otto Country Holiday Open House since 1989.

“It’s nice to have return customers stop in because it’s fun talking to them and catching up,” she said. “We had some new customers, too, who just wandered by and stopped in — not knowing it was an open house. It was really fun and

a nice surprise for them.”

Robin retired from Cattaraugus-Little Valley School as an art teacher in 2012. Now, she devotes her time to her art, creating original watercolor paintings, portraits and commissioned works. She also sells limited edition prints, reproductions and note cards.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ellicottville invites family and friends to a special service of celebration at 9 a.m. Nov. 11. for the burning of the

mortgage on the 2008 addition to the church.

Officials said the million-dollar addition was made possible through generous donations of time, talent and gifts of financial support.

In 1998, a committee was formed to study the parish’s current and future growth potential.

Officials said it soon became obvious that if they were to remain viable in the church’s current location, they would need additional land and a larger facility.

A congregational survey confirmed that the

majority of the members were prepared to move forward with an addition to the building. Over the following years, goals were set and monies were raised through a capital appeal.

Finally, with four acres of land — a significant portion of which was donated — and a $600,000 mortgage, officials said the parish was prepared to begin the task. Architects were interviewed and plans discussed.

After many prayers, officials said a plan was chosen that would solve their current needs and those in the future.

The parish has lost a few of its aged members since then. Officials said when parishoners look at the building, they can see their names and faces memorialized in the fine workmanship they left behind.

The proceeds from the sale of a significant gift of property has allowed the parish to pay off the mortgage after only 10 years.

Officials said they are humbled and gratified by the blessings bestowed upon the congregation.

Following a brief service at 9 a.m., the mortgage burning will commence with a brunch to finalize the gratitude-filled day.
