Holiday events continue in Ellicottville this weekend

This weekend and throughout December, even more can’t-miss Christmas celebrations are scheduled to bring the holiday spirit to all and keep it here all month long.

Last weekend marked the beginning of the holiday season in the village with Christmas in Ellicottville. The weekend-long celebration included activities for families and visitors as well as the lighting of the traditional See Hoiday Events, page 2

The Boardroom ‘goes viral’ this winter

As the mainstream caught on in the late 1980s and ’90s, we are now entering into the third generation of borders.

“It’s a grassroots thing, snowboarding,” says Spencer Timkey while talking with the Times at The Boardroom High Top. Timkey is the second generation of owners at The Boardroom in Ellicottville.

Submitted photo Help keep the tradition begun by Ellicottville’s Bob McCarthy this Friday at Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas to support Family Support for Ellicottville and Santa’s Workshop.

Last year, Joey did not have any gifts under the Christmas tree for his parents or his big sister, Nancy.

This year, little Joey is driving on a snowy Sunday afternoon in December to Santa’s Workshop with Nancy and their parents. In the back seat of the car, he is excited to shop for Christmas presents for his family.

When the family walks into Santa’s Workshop, they are greeted by Santa’s Elves. The workshop is decorated for Christmas and filled with gifts to choose from.

His parents are escorted to a private waiting area where they enjoy refreshments while the elves help Joey and Nancy select presents for them. The kids and then each of the parents get a chance to privately pick out gifts for each other. The gifts are then taken to the elves gift wrap station where they are individually wrapped.

Joey is not required to pay for the gifts, but very proud to be able to donate something for them, so he drops 50 cents into the jar at checkout.

The family leaves with two happy kids and their wrapped gifts that the kids will be able to put under their tree for Christmas morning. The spirit of giving is alive in well in them.

This is the concept of Santa’s Workshop. This is a highly confidential and special service that Family Support for Ellicottville feels is a great way to give back to our community by helping local families in need.

Throughout the year, Family Support for Ellicottville directly helps families in the Ellicottville school district in a variety of ways. Onehundred percent of all monies donated to Family Support remain in the

community and support the needs that arise during these difficult economic times.

Family Support for Ellicottville, an affiliate of the Rotary Foundation for Youth, is a 501c3 charitable foundation so your donation is tax deductible.

This event also provides gifts to the Sherriff’s Santa Program, which helps families throughout Cattaraugus County.

How can you help? Save the date for 13th annual “Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas,” this Friday at the Ellicottville Brewing Company (EBC) located on Monroe Street.

In Bob McCarthy’s memory, the Rotary Club and many friends spearheaded this fun-filled event that will directly benefit the Santa’s Workshop and Sheriff’s Santa programs. The wagon will be at EBC early Friday to accept unwrapped gifts.

If you have baked a dessert, drop it off at Katy’s Café. You can bring your donation to the event or drop them at 47 Elizabeth St., before the event.

Need help in figuring out ideas for gifts? Monetary donations are always the best, but gifts are needed for every age and gender including parents, teenagers and children. Gift cards and certificates can provide a great night for one of the families.

At 4:30 p.m., don’t miss an unparalleled spectacle set to take over the village. Pet owners will bring their pride and joys, dressed in their season’s best, for the annual Rein Dog Parade making its way down Washington Street.

The Ellicottville Central School band will begin to play at 5:30 at the Village Gazebo while the Ellicottville Central High School jazz choir will be singing for the pageant.

The evening concludes with a living Nativity. Local children of Ellicottville, as well as the camel, three wise men complete with a donkey and a few other surprises, use the village to tell the story of that first Christmas.

On Friday, Nov. 30, the tradition begun 13 years ago by Ellicottville’s own Bob McCarthy returns to Ellicottville Brewing Company. It’s the annual Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas.

It was McCarthy who said, “I love doing Irish Christmas, which is a night of Irish magic. I don’t know how the magic gets there, but it just does. That’s the beauty of it.”

The Irish Christmas fundraiser has become an event to remember and one that locals and weekenders alike love to see. McCarthy’s wagon will be parked outside EBC around 7 a.m. for new toys and unwrapped gifts to be collected for Santa’s Workshop and the Sheriff’s Santa Program.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, the Christmas Stroll returns to Ellicottville for its 31st year. From 4 to 5:30 p.m., Santa and his elves will be at Villaggio while Mrs. Claus will be baking some cookies at Katy’s Cafe.

The menu for the night will include some of the best food around and enjoy live music by XPRIME. Opening Day at HoliMont is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Dec. 14. With 21 new snowmaking machines and plenty of project improvements over the summer, the

Ellicottville Chamber announces window decorating winners

The decorations keep getting better and better every year, and that makes our judges happy. This year, so many businesses in Ellicottville had the Christmas spirit and decorated their

My First Black Friday

An Ellicottville Student’s Trek through a Capitalist Wasteland

After two months of pure scholastic stress and turmoil, the Thanksgiving break arrived like an angel from the heavens. I all-too-willingly succumbed to the holiday’s tantalizing call, sentencing myself to days of procrastination and idleness.

Though I had an exam to study for and a mountain of applications to complete, I dedicated myself to something a bit more worthwhile — the pursuit of something new, something different.

I wanted this Thanksgiving to be unlike its tired predecessors; I wanted to redefine what the holidays meant to me. I wanted to go Black Friday shopping.

Admirably, in my 17 years of life, I had perennially abstained from the chaos that surrounds the shopping extravaganza.

“Black Friday?” I always asked myself.

“Like the Black Plague, the Black Widow Spider?” The colorful adjective never boded well for me. How is “Black Friday” supposed to be a day of commercial glory? Somehow, this year, I managed to change my mindset. I’m not sure whether it was the pained cries of my senior year withering before my eyes or the “bucket-list” mentality that occasionally edges me out of my comfort zone, but I found myself asking off from

work that cursed day, Friday the 23rd.

I arrived at the Walden Galleria Mall and immediately wanted to turn back. Opting out of valet service, I circled the never-ending parking ramp, fuming at the oversized SUVs taking up a space-and-a-half.

Finally, after what seemed like a literal eternity, I found a spot and squeezed in. I exited my little 2007 sedan — she took up an appropriate amount of room — descended the stairs and entered the mall.

The smell hit me like a cannonball, a strange combination of giant soft pretzels and unmistakable retail. I hit Five Guys for a powerup and exited 30 minutes later, already sweaty, with Cajun fries and a water.

I glanced around the mall. It was like a war zone. I saw people sleeping, crying and fighting.

I saw mothers turn to pack mules; I saw children turn to screeching animals. I weighed the pros and cons in my mind: wait in line for an hour at a store I like or browse freely in a store I hate.

Neither was appealing. I darted in and out of shops, almost buying quirky socks or strange ornaments, but I could never follow through. I arrived at Macy’s, exhausted, feet pounding. I stood for an absurd amount of time in front of the cheap mall nail salon, almost convincing myself to get a pedicure. I would have given anything not

to walk another step.

Macy’s “door-busters” were more like “light knocks,” but I still found a deal or two to satisfy my holiday shopping list. I waited in line, an innocent little girl in a mall full of veteran shoppers. “Black Friday deals ended at 1,” I heard as the man in front of me checked out. It was 4:30. I left the mall, dejected and only three cast iron pans the richer.

And what I experienced wasn’t even the worst of it. I didn’t stand in line at Walmart for 5 hours, pining for $200 iPads. I avoided Best Buy with its crazy shoppers double-fisting flat screened TVs. I didn’t dare look at the Apple store. I’m sure there was barely room to breathe.

Black Friday was a terrifying experience for me, and I don’t think I could ever go back. After that ordeal, I have decided to shop the “normal” way: internet stalking for deals on Cyber Monday, my crazed eyes burning.

Oh, what a wonderful way to begin the holiday season. Good luck, everyone!

ECS SPORTS New look for Eagles boys hoops in 2018-19

In undoubtedly a period of transition for the Ellicottville boys basketball program, coach Dave McCann still likes the talent in his varsity huddle.

The Eagles, who along with rival Franklinville dominated the CCAA East II division each of the last three years, lose four starters, 12 seniors overall, who made up 89 percent of last year’s scoring.

So it would be unreasonable to expect McCann’s squad to immediately pick up for the 2017-18 Eagles.

“They’re some talented kids and they work pretty hard,” he said. “Even from our first scrimmage to our third, we saw some gains that were some positive things. It’s almost, I don’t want to say completely starting over, but it’s starting fresh. We’re teaching a lot more and having to go over things at a little slower pace than in years past, which is fine.

But the kids are taking to it and the key is to not throw too much at them.”

Brothers Steven and Clayton Rowland bring back the most varsity experience. Steven, a third-year varsity player as a senior, started at forward last year and averaged 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds.

His younger brother Clayton, a sophomore, was a call-up from JV last season and played late in the season.

“They’re really the two guys with the most varsity experience that we have coming back,” McCann said, “and I really only have two other kids that were on the team last year in (senior guards) Brennan Finn and Brenden Chudy.

We’re going to look to Steve and Clayton to kind of help as much as they can in practice and help prepare these guys for what it’s going to be like in the varsity games. I think we’re starting to see a little bit of that from the scrimmages.”

Clayton and his older brother Steven are the team’s most experienced varsity players headed into the season.

The Eagles scrimmaged Allegany-Limestone, Portville and Springville to prepare for the start of the regular season on Friday in the Salamanca TipOff Tournament against Clymer.

“The first one was Allegany, we struggled a little bit, and a lot of that was the speed of the game,” McCann said. “Allegany’s a really good team, so coming out of that, we saw improvements in the Portville scrimmage and then again in the Springville scrimmage.

The things that we have in now are starting to click a little bit and hopefully, the main goal is to be playing pretty competitively by the playoffs.”

The team’s newcomers include juniors Jordan Grinols (guard), Christian Hutchinson, Niklas Logel and Nathaniel Ploetz (forwards) along with sophomores Leif Jimerson (guard) and Wyatt Chudy (forward).

“I think they’ve all had good moments,” McCann said. “One of the good things I think we’ll see out

McCann thinks it will be “anyone’s league” this year, with both Forestville and Pine Valley bringing back most of their teams and Ellicottville and Franklinville experiencing heavy turnover.

“My big goal personally is just to teach and kind of prepare them day-in and day-out,” McCann said.

“Try and get them playing at the level I know they’re capable of, so that’s something that I think I’m trying to stay more focused on more in the short term with the longterm goal of still trying to compete for a league championship and still trying to compete when it comes playoff time.”

The Eagles should know where they stand within the first few weeks of the season, with a handful of bigger schools and strong basketball programs on the non-league schedule.

“We’re going to be playing some good schools obviously opening in the Salamanca tournament and then going in and playing teams (like) Southwestern, Randolph, Frewsburg, Tapestry,” McCann said.

“Those are going to be some tough games for us and I think the big thing is just competing for 32 minutes and just sort of steady improvement is the message.”

After trailing 17-10 at halftime, Clymer scored the first 11 points of the third quarter and never trailed again as the Pirates beat the Eagles 40-28 in a non-league opening night tip-off.

“We started making our shots,” Clymer coach Scott Neckers said of his team’s second-half run. “We missed a lot of layups in the beginning and you can tell it’s the first game of the year and it’s a very early game in the year and I think you saw that with both teams.

We’re both a little rusty, but you’ve got to play these games to get rid of that rust and figure out what to do and all that good stuff. But I’m proud of the way both teams fought hard, played well and it was a good game for us because they’re tough, especially on the inside.

They’re very physical and strong. That’s something we need to work on and they showed some of our weaknesses because our girls need to play stronger.”

After her first game on the varsity bench, new Eagles coach Chelsea Cole agreed her team entered the season rusty.

“We don’t have a lot of practices under our belt,” Cole said. “We had a

couple missing some practices a few days and weather so that was an issue.

“I think we played pretty well for our first game and got it under our belt. I feel pretty good about it.”

Senior Linnea Jimerson posted 13 points, 15 rebounds and four steals for Ellicottville. She led a strong stretch to end the first half, scoring two baskets and assisting on two more in an 8-0 run in the final three minutes of the second quarter.

“We put our best defender on her and just said we’re going to play team defense,” Neckers said of defending Jimerson. “She is a tremendous player.

I watched her play last year and she’s capable of scoring a ton of points in a hurry, so I was really happy with, I think it was, Kate Honey got on her and really did a great job slowing her down when we went to man. I was really proud of Kate.”

Also for Ellicottville (0-1), Sierra Maybee 8 rebounds and Megan Chapman had seven. Makenna Smith marked four steals.

Emma Wiggers led Clymer (1-0) with 12 points and Ashley Covey scored nine points.

After a slow offensive start to the season, Cole hopes the shots start to fall as the Eagles move along.

“My girls fought really hard,” Cole said. “Baskets weren’t falling (but) they were working, pushing down the court.”

That’s right, schlumpiness, which means posture befitting our prehistoric predecessors. Just picture the prehistoric man with rounded shoulders, slouching necks, dragging their knuckles, only, in today’s version, they

Industrialization brought an increase in sitting to the modern world. And modern technology has given us devices that we hold and view while hunched over.

Yet these advancements are ironically devolving our species a bit; part of what makes us human is our ability to walk upright, and yet here we are creeping around where we once stood tall.

“Stand up straight.”

That’s timeless advice we’ve probably all heard at one time or another.

It’s worth heeding. Good posture is important to balance: by standing up straight, you center your weight over your feet. This also helps you maintain correct form while exercising, which results in fewer injuries and greater gains. And working on balance can even strengthen your abilities in tennis, golf,

running, skiing — and just about any other sport or activity.

Not an athlete? It still pays to have good balance. Just walking across the floor or down the block requires good balance, as does rising from a chair, going up and down stairs, toting packages and even turning to look behind you.

I’ve spent many hours researching the benefits and mechanics of good posture. Here are some of the interesting things I found out: Improves bodily alignment — When you stand and sit with your body properly aligned, all your organs can function as intended. This includes your stomach, which is why good posture may improve digestion.

Eliminates back and neck pain — When you have proper posture, your bones and spine can easily and efficiently balance and support your body’s weight.

For the past two years, the Elisa B. Hughey Memorial Scholarship for the Arts has awarded scholarships to graduating Ellicottville Central School (ECS) and West Valley Central School (WVCS) seniors intending to study the Fine Arts in College.

The Scholarship Committee recently decided to expand its scope and partner with the Tri-County Arts Council to offer 80-percent tuition funding for art education classes through the Arts Council.

For the 2018-19 school year, ECS and WVCS students age 14 and older are eligible for the program. The art council’s intent with the partnership is to further kids’ art education opportunities beyond the classroom, as well as to support the arts in Cattaraugus County.

classes.html. The arts council offers classes in different media such as felt, pottery and ceramics.

Before the tree lighting ceremony Dec. 7, Route 240 (Main Street) will be closed between School and Depot streets by fire police personnel. A detour is readily available, Bond said.

“This way everyone is safe from traffic,” Bond said. “There’s isn’t enough room in front of the building for everyone without overflowing into the street.”

The West Valley High School Chorus will sing Christmas carols to start things off, Bond said. Santa will come by fire truck and lead the countdown to lighting the tree.

The Community Choir will lead a sing-along with several Christmas songs, Girl Scouts and 4-H members will pass out hot chocolate and Christmas cookies and State Sen. Catharine M. Young is expected to speak.

The Community Center will be open in case of rain or snowy weather. “If it rains or snows, we can put the keyboard inside,” Bond said.

“The first year we held umbrellas over the keyboard,” she laughed. “That didn’t work out so good.”

The third annual West Valley Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 in front of the Community Building on Main Street.

The West Valley Christmas Tree Lighting began two years ago with about 140 area residents. It grew larger last year, and promises to grow bigger yet this year, said Ashford Town Councilwoman Jean Bond.

Shortly after taking office three years ago, Bond said she thought it would be a good idea to start a Christmas tradition in West Valley. A Christmas tree lighting and a visit by Santa Claus would make a nice family tradition, she thought.

“It’s incredible,” Crowley said. “The company put the resources into snowmaking” to extend the ski season.

It just has to be cold to make snow.

Holiday Valley just received a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to buy 107 new automated guns that will replace a similar number of less efficient guns, said Jane Eshbaugh, resort marketing director.

“This year was ideal,” Crowley said. “We started making snow last week.

We’ve got 14 inches of natural snow mixed in.”

There is a base on the slopes of 16-18 inches.

Holiday Valley annually targets the day after Thanksgiving to start skiing, but the weather can delay that opening. If there is cold weather and no snow, the resort stockpiles man-made snow to get a head start.

There are three sevenperson snowmaking crews and supervisors for each shift. “It’s around the clock, seven days a week as needed,” Crowley said.

In the week before opening, Holiday Valley crews have directed 65 acre feet of snow onto the core slopes they needed to open last week. That is equal to a foot of snow across a football field — including the end zones, Crowley said.

West Valley Christmas Tree Lighting grows each year

Thanks to the largest snowmaking system in the East and second-largest in the country, Holiday Valley opened for skiers and snowboarders last Friday morning.

It marked the beginning of the resort’s 61st year. At the peak of operations later this season, Holiday Valley will have 1,200 employees at the resort and nearby tubing park.

The man who oversees snowmaking operations, Steve Crowley, has been making snow there since 1984 and became mountain operations director in 2004.

There’s a world of difference in snowmaking over the past 34 years.

“Automation is a huge advantage,” Crowley said last week at McCarty Cafe on the ground floor of Holiday Valley Lodge.

In 1984, crews dragged 24 snow guns and hoses up and down a few slopes.

On Nov. 15, 215 automated snow guns were going on 10 slopes, getting things ready for opening day.

There are 630 snow guns at Holiday Valley, about 330 of which are automated.

What’s more, Crowley can run the extensive automated system from his cellphone. The app by HKD, maker of the snow guns, is a smaller version of the interactive map of Holiday Valley slopes at the control center near the Yodeler Lodge, which is manned around the clock.

The snow guns’ sensors note weather conditions and adjust water and compressed air automatically for the type of snow they are producing, Crowley said.

Wreath making class to be held Dec. 5

Nannen Arboretum Society members will hold a wreath making class Dec. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the town center auditorium, 28 Parkside Drive in Ellicottville.

This is the 3rd annual wreath making class sponsored by the society and the fourth in a series of quarterly programs offered at the Nannen Arboretum.

‘Share the Love’ to help vulnerable seniors this holiday season

Ellicottville Engineering Department makes large strides

By Caitlin Croft The town of Ellicottville’s engineering department has been busy this past month, undergoing a review of the current Town and Village permit applications, forms and rate structure.

The current rates and forms hadn’t been updated in years. To streamline the application process and increase efficiency, the department has consolidated the existing forms so they are identical for the town and village.

Niles Pierson, engineer for the town and village, explained how they came up with the new rate schedule.

“We took into account the cost of labor associated with reviewing a project and overhead,” he said.

“The cost of a building permit has gone down, but there will be additional fees if a project has to go to the Planning Board and ZBA or other review.”

The overall increase in fees is approximately 16 percent.

The GIS map is 75 percent complete and includes Town Highway culvert inventory, water and sewer inventory. Training in the use of a handheld GPS device will be held on Dec. 11. The engineering website is now live and a link can be found on the town’s website. The new IT server and phone system has been installed.

The redesign of drainage layout on Upper Holiday Valley Road is approximately 30 percent complete and ongoing. The Environmental Facilities Corporation Grant Award announcements should be made in the next two weeks. New water and sewer rates are being

written.

The board was presented with updated detail drawings at last month’s meeting. The biggest change was to the Town Road Standard, requiring new roads to be more substantial. They accepted the updated detail drawing as presented, noting that there may be revisions as design standards change.

Spectrum will only offer fiber internet at the highway barn and it will cost $360 a month in addition to the initial cost of $5,000 to have the line brought from the pole to the building.

The consensus was that that was a lot of money for the service that was being provided. Pierson will be looking into other options.

Pierson presented a proposal from Dude Solutions for permitting software for the Building Department. The initial fee for set-up and implementation is $22,305.42, which includes a one-year contract. Pricing for First Renewal Term is $7,675. The program will tie into the GIS software which is also from Dude Solutions. It will allow the Building Department to be more efficient and organized.

Pierson believes that there could be cost savings over time because it would make it possible for the department to share their services with other municipalities.

Mr. McAndrew asked if there would be an additional licensing fee to add another municipality to the software. Pierson advised he will look into that.

Pierson advertised for bids to allow the town to partner with a tree service company every year to trim limbs out of the right of way on town roads. The bids were opened on Oct. 19. The board accepted the low bid from Fries Tree Service for $175 an hour.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the town’s 2019 budget was adopted on Nov. 7. The town stayed under the tax cap with a tax increase of a little over 1 percent. That amounts to about 2 cents per thousand.

The rate is 1.29004, one of the lowest in the county.

Windmill projects in Farmersville and Franklinville are progressing. The county is working on a formula for quantifying the value of shared services to qualify for a grant.

A public hearing for the Comprehensive Plan Amendments was set for Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. The Comprehensive Plan has not been updated and amended since 2012.

The EVGV Trail is still working on Liability and Insurance issues. Attorney Moriarty presented an updated Intermunicipal Agreement for Shared Services of Code Enforcement Officer. It is the town’s intention for the CEO to become a town employee Jan. 1.

Town Center has received a grant to replace their windows. Pierson will put the design together and put the project out for bid in the spring.

The “Christmas in Ellicottville” weekend kicked off Nov. 23 and continued through Nov. 25 when visitors enjoyed old-fashioned Christmas activities. Families from all

over the area participated in a full schedule of activities geared for children including meeting the Jolly old Elf himself, fire truck rides with Santa, face painting, horse-drawn wagon rides, ornament making, interactive

children’s activities, cookie decorating and meeting a real reindeer. On Friday night, the Ellicottville Sound Chorus provided evening entertainment as the Community Christmas Tree was lit.

Over at Cupcaked, on Monroe Street, children had the opportunity to decorate their own Christmas cookie.

Silver Bells month-long celebrations begin Nov. 24

The Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce and the Ray & Wyn Ritchie Evans Foundation are here to help bring all into the Christmas season for one of the biggest Silver Bells Celebrations ever.

The Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino brings holiday shows featuring high energy entertainment like Donny & Marie on Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. and Jewel on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.

With the city aglow in decorative light, you can take advantage of an extraordinary opportunity to experience Seneca culture with an all-around fun Powwow. This event will be held Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Allegany Community Center.

The Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association will ring in the season with a Silver Bells Holiday Show Dec. 1 and 2 at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater.

Two days later, Cattaraugus County Community Action will host Santa’s Carnival on Dec. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m., free for children under 11. See Santa & Mrs. Claus, Frosty the Snowman and Buddy the Elf, with games and prizes, caricatures by Eric Jones, gifts, crafts and even Christmas cookies and cocoa. Festivities continue at 6 p.m. with WGWE throwing a Crafty Christmas Party for all with crafting projects, refreshments, carolers, Santa and more.

The following day, Dec. 15, brings Santa and his reindeer back to the Salamanca Historical Museum from 10 a.m. to noon and the Salamanca Rail Museum will have their Christmas Caboose from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Later that night, Santa will be taking calls from the WGWE office at 945-5801 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Rounding out the Silver Bells season on Dec. 16, the United Congregational Methodist Church will perform a Christmas Cantata live at 3 p.m.

In 1984, Mike Timkey opened Alpine Ski Rental and in 1991 bought his first boards, and since then it evolved into The Boardroom.

“It is so cool to see these grassroots snowboarding families bringing in their kids to pass on the love of the sport,” Spencer Timkey said. “You have some old school boarders that only want their kids on boards. My nephew will be getting out on the hill this season, he is now the third generation of Timpkeys who has been a part of the Boardroom.”

They are seeing that the 30 somethings with young families coming in who are eager to get their kids on snowboarding, Timkey said.

It seems that over the past decade it was more a “ski family” that a few siblings decided to try their hand at snowboarding. It is amazing that this sport is now turning into a crossgeneration lifestyle, he added.

New this season, The Boardroom rolled out their online store.

“It is time to keep pace with the industry and where it is headed,” Timkey said. “The stigma of an online store has toned down.”

Many feel that with the grassroots underbelly of snowboarding a website is impersonal, he said, but this is where The Boardroom aims to do it differently.

“You will get the same level of service that you have come to know when you walk through our doors.”

They have many customers who cannot get to the shop before the first snowfall and they want to be able to cater to them, Timkey said. No longer will you have to spend a morning getting your gear — you can just head to the slopes to shred. There will also be an in-store pickup option if that better works for your schedule.

“This is also another avenue for selling product year round,” he added of their new online service.

You can expect to find most of The Boardroom’s in-store product on the site, but note, there are some things you just have to get to the shop to get your hands on. This includes their line of Burton Step-In products.

“This setup has been a big catalyst for our shop,” said Timkey.

Some of the lines the store carries include Roxy, Burton, Darn Tough, Lib Tech, Solomon, Oakley and Giro. They also do daily ski and board rentals.

In addition to all the gear for the slopes, there is everything from après wear to luggage to 716 snapbacks.

Their newest addition to their product lines is Jones Snowboards.

This line was started by Jeremy Jones an American Big Mountain Freerider.

They also have all new branded gear that is a must if you want to rock the apres scene right, Timkey said.

Last year, The Boardroom, in conjunction with Holiday Valley, hosted the first annual Boardroom Banked.

“It was a complete success, we had riders as young as 4 years old up to 55 years old with about 105 competitors,” Timkey said.

Spend Saturday with Santa at Allegany State Park

The holidays are fast approaching and there’s no better way to get into the spirit than by spending some time in Allegany State Park!

Join the Environmental Education Department for “Saturday with Santa,” a fun, festive family event on Saturday, Dec. 1.

Festivities begin at 1 p.m. in the Red House Area of the park. Stop in to hang a couple of ornaments on the big tree at the Red House Administration Building.

There will also be plenty of crafts for the kids to make to take home or to give as gifts. The Allegany State Park Historical Society will be holding a kids coloring contest and mailing letters to Santa in the lobby.

The Red House Picnic Area (site of Santa’s Workshop) is open from 1–4 p.m. Make a pine cone bird feeder, design your own magnet and take pictures in the forest photo booth.

Additionally, Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS) will make a special appearance in Santa’s Workshop with lots of adoptable Rein-Dogs and Christmas Cats!

The Red House Picnic Area Shelter will become a winter wonderland to make Santa feel at home during his short break from duties at the North Pole. He will be greeting children from 2–4 p.m. Don’t forget to make your way back to the Administration Building for the announcement of the coloring contest winner

at 4:30.

The Friends of Allegany State Park and the Allegany State Park Historical Society will be on hand to introduce folks to their organizations.

Light refreshments will be provided by J-Con Concessions and Friends of Allegany State Park.

In this season of giving, we are asking event participants to bring items that can be donated to EARS, such as cat litter, cans of dog and cat food and paper towels.

This is sure to be a great day, so don’t miss out!
