I can get most of the items on christmascentral.com.” According to Laura, she made the connection with Gordon through one of her husband’s sales associates who is acquainted with him. Having been to Dave’s stores in the northtowns, she said she realized what wonderful quality products he has. Dave Gordon founded Gordon Companies Inc. in 1977 and, the same year, opened the first retail store, National Warehouse Sales, on Colvin Blvd. in Cheektowaga. When shoppers visit the Ellicottville Country Store this holiday season, they’ll be delighted to find Dave’s Christmas Wonderland Popup Store inside. Dave Gordon, of Cheektowaga, recently opened Dave’s Christmas Wonderland pop-up stores for the holiday shopping season in Ellicottville, Franklinville and Williamsville. Open in November and December, the temporary stores will offer a variety of Christmas merchandise ranging from artificial trees, outdoor decorations and lights to decorative Santas, stockings, wreaths and ornaments. Owners Laura and Tom McLeod brought the Christmas popup into a section of their store for 90 days. Laura said there will be a blowout sale after Christmas, and everything will be gone by the middle of January. “Christmas is big. You have September, October, November and December that give you four months of sales,” she said. “As soon as the temperature drops in October, people start thinking about Christmas.” Laura said their oldfashioned country store lends itself to a Christmas shop, so she was very excited to have Dave’s Christmas Popup Store come in. “We set it up in a rush because I wanted to get the store in here before the Fall Festival,” she said. “I got a tractor-trailer in here on Wednesday afternoon and I think they unloaded eight full pallets. We got everything out, on the floor and in the computer in two days.” Laura said if a customer sees a Christmas item they

F/E’s Rowland makes Big 30 All-Star offense

A stalwart on the offensive line and at multiple positions on defense, Steven Rowland was undoubtedly among his team’s most valuable members as a senior. Rowland’s contributions to the Franklinville/Ellicottville football earned him a spot on the Olean Times Herald’s Big 30 Football All-Star team, as the paper unveiled its 31 honorees on Sunday. Rowland made the team on offense. Described as a “hard-nosed, two-way player,” Rowland made his biggest impression at offensive tackle. By Kim Duke Consistent exercise is only part of the successful core-training equation: you must combine training with healthy nutrition to achieve a healthy and robust body. For best results, it is vital to fuel correctly. The old adage that you are what you eat applies quite literally to your physique. Here are some tips I have found that are very helpful to my clients as they transition their food choices. 1: Eat! Don’t skip meals; otherwise, you’ll become too hungry, eat too fast and ultimately eat too much. 2: Do not skip carbs.

Carbohydrates can be simple, complex or fibrous. Simple carbs such as fruit are broken down quickly by the body and provide short bursts of energy. Complex carbs like oatmeal are slower to break down and fibrous carbs like broccoli and asparagus aid digestion and provide fiber, which assists in removal of waste from the body. 3: Avoid inflammatory foods. Inflammation triggers belly fat storage and is an underlying factor in many disease states. Avoid refined carbohydrates, foods rich in saturated fats and trans fats and highly processed foods. Kim Duke these foods can promote inflammation. 4: Protein. Consume at least one gram of protein per pound of your body weight from lean sources. Think lean beef, white-meat poultry, fish

and eggs. 5: Eat more produce. Fresh vegetables and fruits are essential to proper nutrition. They’re loaded with filling fiber and packed full of disease-fighting antioxidants. They’re also low in calories. 6: Eat at least one good source of healthy fat every day. Monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids help to fight both belly fat and inflammation. These fats are essential to maintaining a desirable body weight as well as preventing disease. Good fats are found in olives and avocados. Omega-3s can be found in walnuts, flax seeds and salmon to name a few. 7: Stay hydrated.

Hydration helps keep your energy level up, fills you up to help you reduce your portions at meals and snack time and helps your metabolism function at its peak. So drink up! 8: Stay active. Even if you don’t have a regular exercise routine, get a pedometer and make sure you get in a minimum of 10,000 steps every single day. Maintaining your weight loss is all about balance. I tell my clients to follow the 80/20 rule. Focus 80 percent of the time on eating healthy, belly-friendly foods that shrink the waistline and fight inflammation. Then 20 percent of the

time, you have room to veer off track a bit. This 20 percent is your splurge. You may choose to have one day a week where you have a splurge meal, or you may opt for a small snack twice a week where you don’t exactly make the healthiest choice. What you chose to eat is up to you. Keep in mind one bad day does not spell disaster for your hard work and set goals. Each day presents a clean slate for you to make healthier choices and redirect your fitness ship. Being healthy and eating healthy is a lifestyle, not a fad. If you want it bad enough, you will find the determination and fortitude to attain it.

’Tis the season for Christmas In Ellicottville By Kellen M. Quigley With the Thanksgiving holiday this week, people also truly turn their attention to getting ready for Christams, which is only weeks away. After spending a day with family and friends eating delicious food and sharing what you’re thankful for, continue the weekend together in downtown Ellicottville on Saturday with a proper kick-off to the most wonderful time of the year. The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce will once again host its annual “Christmas in Ellicottville” event this weekend, Friday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 25. After decades of winter and holiday celebrations in the historic village, the tradition continues with plenty for visitors and residents to see and do. The weekend begins Friday at noon with Fire Truck Rides with Santa up and down Jefferson Street and Washington streets. Throughout the afternoon, families can enjoy face painting, horse and wagon rides, cookie decorating and other interactive children’s activities. At 2:15 p.m., you can visit with Santa in person at the Ellicottville Wingate by Wyndham. Starting at five, families can visit with a real reindeer on the

post office lawn while the Ellicottville Sound Chorus will begin caroling in the downtown area up until the tree lighting. At 6 p.m., the moment everyone has been waiting for arrives with the Community Christmas Tree Lighting

ceremony with Santa on the post office lawn. During the weekend, stores in Ellicottville will be open for the real beginning of Christmas shopping season for all those great Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales too good to pass up.

The exciting pie auction and the dinner event, sponsored by the Ellicottville Rotary Club, raises funds to purchase and provide gifts and meals for local families that could use a little help this holiday season. Then on Dec 1, plan to take part in the village’s old-fashioned Christmas Stroll. The Ellicottville A Christmas Stroll was created in 1987 by a group of citizens who, after brainstorming over coffee, decided that they wanted a live nativity scene with children dressed as angels and shepherds, who walked around the village and met at the gazebo. There, the baby Jesus was presented and caroling presided. The tradition has continued on for the past 28 years. ‘Tis the season for making holiday memories, and there are plenty of opportunities to do just that in Ellicottville this weekend and throughout the month of December.

Area school officials take part in BOCES’s ‘CTE Experience’ By Deb Everts School officials from all the districts serviced at the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center in Ellicottville were invited to participate in the “CTE Experience,” hosted at the center Nov. 14. At the event, senior students act as teachers and share all they have learned during their time

in CTE, while guests become students that ask questions and learn. CTE Outreach Coordinator Tammy Graf said this is the second year the event has been held at all three centers that are located in Ellicottville, Olean and Belmont. She said they focused on the school counselors and some of the administrators last year, but this year

they invited pretty much everyone from the school districts who wanted to come in and work with the students to figure out what CTE is all about. “When we send out an invitation to the school officials and they RSVP, we assign them to three classes to visit, and the sessions are about 20 minutes apart,” she said. “The visitors go into those classes and work with the students in each particular class. Then they move onto the next assigned class, then the next one.” During the event, there were two or three seniors in each class who demonstrated a skill to the visitors. After they demonstrated that skill, those visitors completed that task, just like a student would with their instructor. Robert Decker, school psychologist at AlleganyLimestone Central School, said the Animal Science classroom was first on his list. He said the energy of instructor Kristina Ellis was incredible and the dogs in the room were incredible, too. “The kids that took me around knew their stuff and did really well. They showed me rats, gerbils, hamsters and other animals,” he said. “I actually learned something I didn’t know. When we went into the grooming room for dogs, I had some questions about trimming the nails of my dogs and things like that. The visit was very informative.” Decker said his second stop was at Heavy Equipment Operations where he got his feet muddy, but he also got to drive a backhoe, a little bit, and move the bucket up and down. They showed him how to analyze the batteries and starter on the big truck. He said it was very

“cool stuff.” His last stop was Natural Resources and the climbing ropes were up and ready for him to try. He said the students wanted him to put on a harness and he declined, but they showed him how it works and said, “it was awesome.” “Just having the kids show me how to do these things, you can tell they are really into it. That’s the key to this experience for them because they are hands-on learners,” he said. “They may not like sitting in a lecture hall listening to somebody babble on about stuff, but when they get their hands on something, they get all excited.” Graf said it’s a great learning experience for both the students and the visitors who come in because they always leave with something to bring back. She said it really is amazing when looking at those students in this particular environment and seeing them excel. “The students become the teachers and it’s quite

It was an enlightening experience,” she said. “Looking at that model, we knew it would work perfectly for our school districts to have that same experience — a first-hand look at what our students do, the knowledge they have gained, and the confidence they have.” Graf said a lot of school officials see their students on a regular basis at the home schools and there’s a certain relationship there, but when they come to the CTE centers, it’s an entirely different relationship. “We want those school officials to see their students in a whole different light and find out things they probably weren’t aware of by just having a relationship with them at their home schools,” she said. Prior to the classroom demonstrations, students from the Culinary Arts class prepared and served guests a delicious lunch that included an autumn wrapsody (wrap) served with a side of sweet and tangy citrus slaw, pumpkin soup and Tiramisu for dessert. Record $243.3M county budget expected to pass By Rick Miller LITTLE VALLEY — Few Cattaraugus County legislators expect any more changes in the record $243.3 million county budget for 2019. Changes so far have been minimal — except for last week’s Finance Committee approval of $70,000 to hire a minority counsel for Democrat lawmakers. The power of the County Legislature’s bipartisan coalition was tested Tuesday, Nov. 20 when a public hearing on the budget will be held at 4 p.m., followed by a budget vote, which occured after press time. Before a final vote on the budget the full County Legislature will vote on any changes in the tentative budget since it was presented Nov. 7 by County Administrator Jack Searles. That is where the minority counsel will be voted up or down. If the members of the bipartisan coalition — five Democrats and four Republicans — all vote for it, it will pass. Legislator Dan Hale of Portville, a Republican member of the bipartisan coalition, joined three Democrats Nov. 15 on the Finance Committee in a 4-2 vote that added funding for the minority counsel. Legislature Minority Leader John Padlo, D-Olean, said Democrats had been talking about having

a minority counsel for some time. Some have expressed concern over County Attorney Eric Firkel being a member of the Cattaraugus County Republican Party Committee. Republican Party Chairman Robert Keis Sr. sent a letter to Republican legislators reminding them that the Republican Committee helped elect them and expects them to vote for Republicans for legislative offices. That was in reference to the election in February of Legislature Vice Chairman Susan Labuhn, D-Salamanca, the former minority leader. As vice chairman, Labuhn is chairman of the powerful Finance Committee. Both Labuhn and Legislature Chairman James J. Snyder, R-Olean, were elected with the votes of the bipartisan coalition. After the question of the minority counsel is decided, the rest will likely be all downhill toward budget approval. The $243.3 million tentative budget is up from $230.4 million in 2018. The tentative tax levy is $55.7 million, up from $54.4 million this year, a 2.3 percent increase. Searles said the budget includes $1.9 million from surplus to reduce the tax levy, down from $2.5 million in the current budget. The full value tax rate in the tentative budget

is $12.84, an 18-cent increase. Legislators also voted Tuesday on the proposed 2019 capital program, funding for roads, bridges and buildings and grounds projects totaling $44.8 million, including $23 million for road and bridge construction and other work including snow removal. The public hearing was held beginning at 4 p.m. in the third-floor legislative chamber at the County Center in Little Valley.

Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas returns Nov. 30

With Thanksgiving celebrated this week, the season of giving is officially underway. And what better way to give in the community than with a fundraiser that has become a holiday staple in Ellicottville? Bob McCarthy’s Irish Christmas, sponsored by

the Rotary Club of Ellicottville, continues again this year in Bob’s honor as he touched so many in Ellicottville with his spirit and generosity. Hosted by Ellicottville Brewing Company (EBC), the event is set for Friday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m Although it can never be the same with his passing, Bob’s dedication to this event inspires the organizers to continue with his magic. It was McCarthy who said, “I love doing Irish Christmas, which is a night of Irish magic. I don’t know how the magic gets there, but it just does. That’s the beauty of it.” For 13 years, the Irish Christmas fundraiser

has become an event to remember and one that locals and weekenders alike won’t want to miss. McCarthy’s wagon will be parked outside EBC around 7 a.m. There new toys and unwrapped gifts are collected for Santa’s Workshop and the Sheriff ’s Santa Program, which provides gifts to make

Christmas a little more special for less fortunate families in the community. Again this year, many restaurants will serve special Irish dishes at a reasonable price, or order from the EBC menu. Organizers say there will be a “secret weapon” from the brewery this year to look forward to. The highlight, of course, is the pie auction, and the intention is to continue the way McCarthy wanted it. Ed Frederickson has again volunteered to create pie boxes and special furniture like McCarthy did and got a number of his creations donated to be auctioned off as well. Organizers said they
