preparations set for next weekend One of the best ways to describe downtown Ellicottville in the Christmas season has been as something Norman Rockwell would have conjured up. The New York Times says, “it is like being transported to a scene from an old black and white Christmas movie.” As we start thinking of the Jolly Old Elf himself, why not come to see what the fuss is all about during the annual Christmas in Ellicottville weekend?

The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce brings you a weekend full of holiday primer events to get even the most Grinchy heart growing. From noon on Friday, Nov. 29 to the last horse-drawn carriage ride on Sunday, the weekend is sure to have kids of all ages in the Holiday spirit.

“Christmas is a time we all look forward to,” said Barb Pump, Project Development Manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce.

“We get to spend time with our families and savor each memory that we create.”

In partnership with the Tri-County Arts Council, the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum will host this year’s “Winter Art Market” at the Onöhsagwë:de’ Cultural Center on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 24 from noon to 5 p.m.

The public is invited to this annual event that gives people the opportunity to shop for holiday gifts directly from select regional artists who will be set up throughout the museum.

Visitors will find original, handmade gifts for their holiday shopping list among the many booths displaying paintings, prints, photographs, pottery, jewelry, carving, stained glass, glass, fiber arts and body care products.

WVDP volunteers deliver over 110K pounds of food to area pantries

To spread goodwill for the upcoming holiday season, employees from the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) and its subcontractors gathered at Sander’s Parkview on Nov. 15, volunteering to once again distribute food to nine local food pantries, including the United Church of Christ in Ellicottville.

Led by Lettie Chilson, WVDP facility manager and food drive coordinator, the group loaded the food donations onto two trucks provided by subcontractor American DND. Then, they split into two different teams to deliver hundreds of cases of food and turkeys to area food pantries.

Other pantries include Fellowship Hill Ministries and Concord Food Pantry, Springville; Delevan Methodist Church, Catholic Charities Outreach, Franklinville; Saving Grace Outreach, Cattaraugus; Master’s Plan, Dayton; Little Valley Baptist Church; and West Valley Food Pantry.

The goal this year was to collect 100,000 pounds of food — enough to provide turkeys, holiday items and staples for the nine food pantries. Chilson said this year’s Food Drive exceeded last year’s goal and they collected 111,000 pounds of food, including 400 turkeys, which will help hundreds of families in need during this holiday season.

According to Chilson, the workforce of the WVDP completed its Annual Food Drive on Nov. 14, as part of their continued commitment to the community.

This year’s Food Drive/fundraising effort included food donations from employees themselves and was responsible for the distribution of the food to area pantries.

Day,” she said. “The food pantries we service are basically those that make a ring around our site [WVDP] and those pantries give service to our neighbors and the community. It’s important that we keep it local.”

Chilson said Sanders Parkview and Walmart Inc., in Springville, partner with WVDP in turning donated cash into food.

Because Walmart provided a great price for the volunteers, she was able to buy 400 turkeys from the store this year.

Chilson said they gave Sander’s Parkview a shopping list for the pantries.

Based on that list, the store bought and assembled all of the food for delivery. She said the store also donated a portion of the grocery bill back to the project.

“All of the project participants, including subcontractors, U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), all donate items,” she said. “Several of our subcontractors

have smaller drives to bring in food or donated money.”

Not only does this collected food cover Thanksgiving, but it also carries over toward the Christmas holiday. Chilson said when the final accounting is done, they’ll buy additional turkeys for the Christmas season for all the food pantries.

“The initial delivery includes 400 turkeys and it’ll be almost equal that for Christmas,” she said. “Once the accounts clear, we’ll split the remaining up between all the food pantries, which will be enough to buy another 40 turkeys for each pantry for Christmas.”

Joe Pillittere, communications manager for the West Valley Demonstration Project, said the drive changes yearly. He said they collect more food each year, so it gets bigger and better every year.

“I am honored to be a part of an event that makes a difference in our community,” said CHBWV President and General Manager Scott Anderson. “The

amount of food collected year-after-year demonstrates the generosity and kindness of our employees.”

According to Chilson, this annual tradition began as a food drive for the local West Valley food pantry, in 1989, and WVDP has been doing the drive for over 25 years. She said more than 1.9 million pounds of food has been distributed from this volunteer program through the West Valley Demonstration facility since its inception.

Chilson said all the volunteers are employees of the WVDP and its subcontractors. As members of the team, they have embraced this event as their big team effort charity for the year.

“It’s about giving back to our neighbors,” she said. “It demonstrates the positive impact that kindness can have on a community.”

Pillittere said the bottom-line really is this type of effort from employees, sub-contractors, and their partners at the USDOE and NYSERDA really helps build the quality of life for not only the employees but the community itself.

“Every year during the holiday season, resources get spread thin and the needs of our community increase. Community support from the WVDP Food Drive helps to meet those needs that may have gone unmet during the holiday season,” he said.

Let’s Skate!

Changes in times constitute changes in leisure activities. While Ellicottville will always be known for skiing, it appears there is a new sport in town.

If you walk the streets of Ellicottville, instead of finding bikes and scooters, you are more likely to find kids on skateboards. Local couple Chris and Brenda Perks noticed this change in activities and took the initiative to help bring a skate park to Ellicottville.

Chris’s love of skating peaked as a child where there was not an easily accessible skate park. Together, the Perks hope to create a skate park for children of the community including their own.

The Perks have been working handin-hand with Village Mayor John Burrell to bring this to the community.

At a recent village board meeting, the Perks came to inform the board that they had been awarded a grant through the Tony Hawk Foundation which is funded through the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.

The grant gave a promise for a $250,000 match in one year. This means $250,000 has to be raised for the park in one year in order to receive $250,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation.

In addition, $50,000 has been promised as a “green space” grant to offset any environmental damages that may occur. The hope is to not disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

Other than the Tony Hawk Foundation grant, the Perks have been busy at work applying for other

grants, including a $150,000 NY Parks Grant. The winner of this grant will be announced on Dec. 10, and Chris Perks asked for everyone to “keep their fingers crossed.” There are other grants available, however, Brenda and her family hope that the community can come together to help raise money.

“We have a pretty awesome community,” she said, “and our village board has shown tremendous support.” Brenda is hopeful of positive community involvement.

One village board member wants to leave the community with a message: “In the community, we support and share things. If you want it to happen, then help make it happen.

We are a community and we need to come together to help make this happen. Organize a fundraiser, collect donations, do whatever you can.”

“Christmas in Ellicottville allows us to help create those memories that your family will be able to cherish for years to come, and that is why we love this event,” Pump said. “All the smiles of the children when they see Santa, or the excitement when they get to create an ornament to take home with them, is what the feeling of Christmas should be.”

Saturday and Sunday start at 10 a.m. with a pancake breakfast with Santa. Enjoy flapjacks at Finnerty’s on Saturday and then on Sunday at Villaggio complete with a Christmas movie on their huge screen. Monetary and non-perishable food donations will be accepted to assist the Ellicottville Food Pantry to help the less fortunate. Please be generous!

The rest of the weekend will be filled with carriage rides, fire truck rides, cookie decorating and even more time with Santa for the little ones. Santa’s reindeer will be at the largest and most famous ski tree in America on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and, of course, the great retail merchants and restaurants of Ellicottville will be open all weekend as well. ECS Robotics teams compete in FIRST Lego League competition

Every year in November, the Ellicottville Middle School Robotics Team goes to compete in the FIRST Lego League in Houghton, which was Nov. 16 this year. There, the team used a series of programs to run their robot they created through an obstacle course completing challenges. The robot and the course are made of Legos, and the robot is programmed using Lego Mindstorm EV3 Home Edition.

Each year, the competition is based around a theme. In previous years, it has been pollution, energy and recycling. This year, the theme is City Shapers — basically, a city design.

In addition to the course, each team must make a project about the theme.

It can be a poster, a skit or some other kind of activity as long as everybody participates in it. In their project, the teams have a problem and must detail how to solve said problem.

The obstacle course in question is a large mat with Lego creations on it.

Each creation has at least one challenge that can be completed using it, each one giving different point totals out based on their difficulty.

Among the creations is one that must be completed by both of the teams competing at the same time, but if both teams do, they get a substantial amount of points. The robot completes these challenges using programs completed before the competition and different attachments the teams can swap between runs when the robot returns to the starting area.

Ellicottville has three teams, and they’re all technically competing against each other. Team Fuzzy Logic, coached by Chris and Jamie Edwards, is made up of the members Ben Edwards, Kyle Robinson, Toby Coburn, Jayce Pearl, Sophia Sundeen and Liam McGuire.

Team Disco Bricks, coached by student captains Madison Kilby and Abaigeal Donaghue, is made up of Sam Edwards, Christopher Edwards, Aiden Harrison, William Benatovich, Gabby Spross and Aaron Laguidice.

Team Tech No Logic, coached

by Blair Wood, is made up of Tyler Prichard, Maddox Johnson, Christopher Poliho, Gracie Vassar, Kara White and Courtney Marsh.

I asked each team a few questions about themselves. My first question was ‘How confident are you in your robot and programs?’

Abaigeal, coach of Team Disco Bricks, responded, “The programs we have done are very good and accurate.”

They are still working on a few programs, so she’s still not completely confident, but the ones they do have are solid.

‘The Book Charmer’

Sarah Dove is no ordinary bookworm.

To her, books have always been more than just objects: they live, they breathe, and sometimes they even speak. Recently, however, the books have been whispering about something out of the ordinary: the arrival of a displaced city girl named Grace Wheeler.

And indeed they were, since all of them were working on their project. As far as I knew, nobody on the team even touched their robot that day.

Blair Wood, the coach of Team Tech No Logic, said, “I think my team has a very good robot and programs this year.” I can vouch for their robot at least. It was quite impressive and complex.

My second question was ‘Are there any areas you feel your team needs to improve in?’

Abaigeal replied, “We need to work on our focus and staying on task.”

This is also true from what I saw.

However, middle school students were never known for their attention span, so maybe if she removes other distractions — phones, the soccer ball, etc. — that problem will be solved.

Sophia replied, “Not really. We have pretty much everything down. From what I saw, their project was almost complete, so that shouldn’t be too big of an issue for them.

My final question was ‘Is there anything you’re proud of?’ Abaigeal said, “I’m proud of the way they are all able to work together and they’re all able to work well under pressure.”

That’s a valuable quality to have, and will serve them well during the competition.

Sophia responded, “We’re very proud of our programs because they’re very easy but they’re complex and accurate. Our attachments are also very efficient (most of the time).” In this competition, accuracy and efficiency are necessary to secure victory.

Mr. Wood said, “I’ve been thrilled with this team. They’ve been great to work with, and they’re very enthusiastic and driven.” A good team chemistry is crucial, and a team with enthusiasm and drive stand a good chance of winning, in my experience.

Honestly, all of these teams stand a good chance of reaching the top five.

Any team that scores within the top three gets to move on to Rochester for the state competition. However, regardless of the outcome, I’m positive that each team is going to have a great time in Houghton.

Ellicottville earns four first-team CCAA East all-stars

The Ellicottville girls soccer team placed four players on the CCAA East division’s first-team all-stars after winning the division with an 8-0-2 record (10-4-3 overall).

Mandy Hurlburt, Emilee Ruiz, Logan Fredrickson and Brooke Eddy made the first team for Ellicottville. Hurlburt had a team-high 15 goals with three assists. Ruiz had four goals and four assists and Fredrickson had two goals and two assists.

Eddy played goalkeeper, recording six shutouts.

For Ellicottville, Hayly Fredrickson, Jocelyn Wyatt and Kaitlyn McGuire made the second team. Megan Hartsell, Camryn Earley and Alysa Williams earned honorable mentions.

The impeachment, mass shootings, climate change leading to flooding in Venice, fires in California and winters starting in November.

All this negativity can literally zap your energy, transform your mood and affect your overall health.

Remember these sayings? Count your blessings. Consider yourself lucky. Thank you.

These were all directives our parents/ grandparents gave us so that we would grow into decent people with decent manners. It turns out that the same advice also helps make our brains and body healthier.

“There is a magnetic appeal to gratitude,” says Robert Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, and a pioneer

of gratitude research. “It speaks to a need that’s deeply entrenched.”

Meaning, we need to give thanks and to be thanked, just as it’s important to feel respected and connected socially.

“From an evolutionary perspective, feelings of gratitude is what helps to bind communities together,” said Louisa Kamp’s, author of, “What Gratitude Can Do For You.” “When people appreciate the goodness they’ve received, they feel a need to give it back. This interdependence allows not only an individual but

also society as a whole to prosper and to survive.”

As we have seen all too clearly, it is easy in these modern times to forget to be thankful or even gracious. We’re too distracted, too self-entitled and often too disconnected to others around us.

Louisa Kamp’s adds, “By disconnecting from others we often suffer from consequences such as loneliness, anger or even a less robust immune system.”

Dear Editor, On Feb 5, 2019, I attended a public hearing to discuss a zoning variance in the village requested by Verizon Wireless. The zoning variance was to allow microcell towers to be placed in residential areas throughout the village. Verizon stated that there was a gap in adequate coverage throughout the village on peak weekends, especially during Fall Festival, and the installation of these towers would remedy that.

Many questions and concerns were voiced by myself and other members of the community. One of my questions was whether or not there actually was an issue with coverage in the village and whether or not these microcell towers would, in fact, be installed for Verizon’s new 5G coverage. Verizon’s attorney stated that these were not going to be used for 5G and that that was not what the application was for.

During the Ellicottville Village Board meeting of Nov. 18, Mayor John Burrell shared good news, informing the board that the village has received an engineering grant check for $69,413.30 and a County Sales Tax Check for $112,084.24.

In his Mayor’s report, Burrell updated the board on the WNY Southtowns Scenic By-Way Meeting in Ellicottville held on Nov. 12. Burrell reported the meeting was “well attended” and the Chamber of Commerce showed outstanding leadership to help continue with the process. The interpretive signs being planned by the WNY Southtowns Scenic By-Way committee has been an ongoing conversation between the committee and the village.

The village and committee hope to establish two signs: one in Ellicottville and one in Ashford. The Chamber

of Commerce recently updated its website and Facebook page to contain information on the interpretive signs which has resulted in more attention.

Burrell also updated the board on a CCMOA meeting in Allegany. He informed the board that District Attorney Lori Reiman was present, who updated members and leaders of Cattaraugus County there were 14 new laws passed by New York state that will affect our local legal proceedings. Most of the changes coincide with bail, such as how it is set and enforced.

Burrell suspects the new laws may affect the local police departments.

Towner Planner Gary Palumbo updates the board on his monthly planning report, including the ongoing discussion of Solar Permits. The town of Ellicottville has been working diligently to create a new amendment to include Solar Zoning. Palumbo and

The application by Verizon stated that the new towers would be installed this summer and up and running before Fall Festival. It is now Nov. 14th, Fall festival has come and gone without any cell coverage issues to my knowledge and the new micro towers have not yet been installed.

In my opinion, it seems that the new micro towers were and are not necessary after all.

My questions to the board and the community are: Was this, in fact, part of Verizon’s nationwide 5G rollout? Was there a time limit to install under the variance and can this issue be revisited by the Board?

This update was met with concern from the board with concerns and questions. Members of the board questioned how prepared the village was for an amendment.

Concerns included avoiding loopholes, creating specifications and just avoiding conflicts overall. This topic is ongoing and will be discussed in a future meeting.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, Engineer Niles Pierson gave his report to the board where Board Member Gary Cappelli also raised concern to Pierson about a light out on Donlin Drive. Cappelli stated the light has been out for “quite some time” and several members of the community have commented to him.

Pierson plans to contact National Grid about the light.

Also in his report, Pierson explained the upcoming changes with water and sewer regulations. There was a resolution passed to accept new Sewer Service Regulations and new Water Service Regulations. In these new regulations, there were very few changes. The village of Ellicottville will be in charge of sewer services for the town and village of Ellicottville while the town of Ellicottville will be in charge of the water services for the town and

appreciate the good things flowing to us — from the crunch of autumn leaves to small gestures of appreciation toward co-workers, family and friends. Just today, I received an unexpected gratuitous statement about a new style of training I have implemented. It was unexpected but sure made me feel great all day.

Focus on being a nicer person.

brain, including a surge of the feel-good chemical dopamine.”

When you express gratitude toward a loved one, a college or a friend, he or she is grateful in return, and the back-andforth continues.

So in a time so marred by negativity, look to the things that are close by and tangible. Be thankful for your blessings and say a sincere “thank you” to the next person you see.

You may be surprised at how contagious being gratuitous can be.

The last major point in his report was Pierson updated the Board on the new sewer truck purchased by the village.

The sewer truck has a camera that can be fed into a manhole to help operators look into any issues with the piping along with other more advanced features. The village and the Little Valley agreed to allow the use of the new sewer truck when Little Valley needs it and, in return, Little Valley will allow the village to use their bucket truck when they need it. Pierson also presented the highest bid of the old sewer truck at $1,500. Since the highest bid is about what the truck is worth, the board passed a resolution to accept that bid. Burrell commented on the long life of the old sewer truck. He said the truck actually began its life as a snowplow and was “reimagined” through hard work into a sewer truck.

Special Events Correspondent Spencer Murray updated board on the 2019 Fall Festival Wrap-up Meeting held Oct. 29. Murray commented this year’s Fall Fest was successful as participation was up, vendor participation was up and the number of arrests decreased. It was an overall success!

As one last note, Burrell informed the board he had received a letter back from the Nowaks regarding a grievance made at a previous meeting about their deteriorating fence.

No comments were made by the board about the response.

Randolph Holiday Arts & Crafts Show offers unique gift selections

Times file photo The annual Randolph Holiday Arts & Crafts Show will take place Saturday, Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at the Randolph Central School campus at both the high and elementary schools.

By Deb Everts The ever-popular Randolph Holiday Arts and Crafts Show is back again for the 8th year. This year, the event will be held Saturday, Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Randolph Central School campus,18 Main St. Co-sponsored by the RCS Spanish Club and Student Council, shoppers will find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts in both high school and elementary school gymnasiums, in the hallways near the gyms and the elementary school cafeteria.

The event is free and open to the public.

The senior class will have a full concession stand offering various menu items.

Co-organized by Deb Luce, student council advisor, and Spanish Teacher Sarah Rose, the event will help the Spanish class raise money to go to Costa Rica in June.

According to Luce, the event gets bigger every year. She said there are currently over 100 vendors signed up and more are expected.

Luce said the reason the crafts show has grown so much and become such a big success is that the organizers have really taken a close look at the vendors the past few years.

“Each year, we work to make our show the best ever and have some of the best crafters and artisans in the area join us to put on an incredible show,” she said. “This year, our show has been moved to the last

Saturday in November, which is Black Friday weekend.

Luce said the event has become a juried show because they want vendors who will offer the best quality goods to shoppers.

She said if they offer good quality items, they’re going to get more people to come and the show will continue to grow.

“There’s no better way to kick of your Holiday Season than to attend our craft show and start your Holiday Shopping,” she said. “With over 100 vendors each year, we offer some of the most remarkable Holiday Shopping you will find anywhere in the area.”

Parking space is limited, so people may ride the shuttle bus to the school campus.

The shuttle will be running all day with stops at Weeden Road Park, the Baptist Church near Landmark and at the Triangle Park downtown. Each place will be clearly marked “Shuttle Bus Stop Here.”

Luce said they are having a Randolph Arts & Crafts Show Gift Certificate GiveA-Way every Friday when one of their lucky Facebook followers will win a $25 gift certificate.

Admission to the museum will be waived for this special event, so guests will have the opportunity to not only shop with local artists for holiday gifts but also see the new home of the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum. They can visit the gift shop featuring even more work

from regional artists and museum merchandise.

Tina Hastings, executive director at the arts council, said this is the first time the organization has held the Winter Art Market at the museum. She said the event has been held at Holiday Valley’s main lodge in previous years but, due to some obstacles of timing, they didn’t do the event last year.

“We thought about it and brainstormed ideas of where we could have another sales opportunity for our local artists, and reached out to the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum because we thought it might be a good partnership,” she said. “They were really excited about the idea and

came on board with us to host it there.”

Hastings said they thought having it at the museum would also be a nice way to engage some of the native artists who are part of the Native Roots Artists Guild. She said the arts council has several native artists who are participating, as well as other artists from the region.

“We’re really looking forward to the event being there, and we hope it’s a big success,” she said.

The cultural center and museum is located at 82 W. Hetzel St. off the Broad Street Extension.

Nannen Arboretum wreath making class to be held Dec. 4

Nannen Arboretum Society members will hold a wreath making class Dec. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the town center auditorium, 28 Parkside Drive in Ellicottville.

Society members Nan Miller and Cheri Reed will lead a class for making a wreath or swag or boxwood tree.
