By Deb Everts ELLICOTTVILLE — To give its members and guests the best ski experience possible, HoliMont Ski Resort continues to make improvements to its snowmaking system, so skiers will have plenty of the white stuff to enjoy this season.

Greg Culver, director of marketing, said a lot of the projects they worked on this year are things people wouldn’t ordinarily notice because much of it is underground, including piping upgrades, which they do annually.

“We’ve been replacing old water lines with new waterlines for our snowmaking machines because some of the pumping systems are more powerful and different than they were about 30 years ago,” he said. “A lot of metal and steel pipe has been put in the ground this year.”

Above ground, people might notice the 21 new Super Pole Cat Fan Guns that have been added for snowmaking.

Culver said the fan guns came in a couple of weeks ago and they will allow them to have more permanent and effective snowmaking in some of the problem areas where there are natural springs and low spots that always need special attention.

Their goal is to have 100-percent coverage — meaning every single slope will have snowmaking on it.

“A lot of times we would have to jockey

these guns from one location to the other to make snow in problem areas,” he explained.

“With these 21 new guns, they’ll be permanently located in the spots where we were kind of short.

Now, it’ll be faster, more efficient and it’ll be safer for our guys who will be lifting these guns and relocating them when the conditions are not the best.”

Culver said the staff at HoliMont truly believes in the fan gun system for a couple of reasons. He said the system not only makes excellent snow, but a couple of HoliMont employees and Dave Riley had a hand in inventing the technology years ago.

“We co-developed the fan gun with SMI Snowmakers about 20 years ago and we sold that technology for Super Pole Cat Fan Guns to SMI,” he said. “For years and years, we had royalties, which is why we were able to line our hills with that type of gun.”

According to Culver, a fan gun works like the fan in a person’s house.

It can oscillate and be directed up, down, right and left, making it very effective in blowing snow.

He said for one location, they can cover more than 180-degrees with the pattern of the snow.

HoliMont’s programs haven’t changed much and are similar to recent years, except for a few modifications. Culver said the national organization is pushing terrain-based learning, which has been a hot topic for the last two

or three seasons.

Culver said future development in the WestMont area of the resort is still in the master plan but, unfortunately, those plans are on hold for some different reasons.

He said the plan will happen in phases and will include new slopes and eventually a new lodge, along with a new beginner area. Culver said HoliMont has plans to improve the children’s programs and learn to ski programs by giving beginners their own area with a wide-open space.

HoliMont has a new, non-skiing event called “Frosty CX,” a fat bike race that is coming Feb. 23, 2019. According to Culver, a fat bike is a mountain bike with humungous tires that are made for snow.

“We are going to have a groomed snow course similar to our cyclocross course, but it will be for fat bikes. There will be three divisions: Men’s, Women’s and Kid’s,” he said. “It’ll be easy and a spectacle to watch. People will be able to see the whole race because it’ll be held at the bottom of Sunset area. The event is already a buzz among the biking community.”

Culver said that’s one area they’re really looking at getting into for the non-ski season, and even during the ski season at times, because fat bikes are used all winter long.

HOLIDAY VALLEY BEGINS SNOWMAKING TUESDAY EVENING AFTER SEASON’S FIRST STORM

Holiday Valley officially began snowmaking in preparation for the 201819 season Tuesday evening after several inches of snow last weekend.

The weather forecast for Ellicottville called for low temperatures and humidity to drop low enough to fire up the automated snowmaking guns on the Yodeler, Candy Cane Loop, Mardi Gras and School House slopes and possibly Cindy’s beginning Tuesday evening through Thursday morning.

This follows the season’s first blast of winter which hit a wide area of Cattaraugus County Nov. 9 and 10, resulting in dozens of vehicles sliding off roads.

By mid-morning Nov. 9, the police scanner began what seemed like non-stop accident reports of vehicles sliding off slippery roads.

A large number of the accidents were from cars sliding off Interstate 86.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff ’s Lt. Melanie Churakos said it had been a busy day for deputies.

“It was the first snow of the season when many people need a reminder of how to drive,” she said.

The National Weather Service posted a Winter Weather Advisory Nov. 9. About an inch of snow fell across southern and central parts of the county, causing wet, slushy roads.

Police, other first responders and ambulance

crews were busy for more than five hours responding to accident reports, including more than one reported roll-over and vehicles striking trees.

“We haven’t heard of any serious injuries,” Churakos said, although some people in vehicles that went off the road were taken to Olean General Hospital for treatment.

“Many people don’t have snow tires on yet,” Churakos said. “Our advice is to slow down and get snow tires.”

Cattaraugus County Public Works Commissioner Kathleen Ellis said the Olean area got more snow than in Little Valley and other parts of the county.

“We’ve got equipment out and working. We’re prepared,” she said.

By Saturday, the first major lake-effect snow event of the season left Cattaraugus County mostly unscathed as the heaviest bands of snowfall kept to the north.

The exception was Perrysburg, in the far northwest corner of Cattaraugus County, which, according to Jim Mitchell of the National Weather Service, recorded 13.8 inches of accumulation by Saturday evening.

“That’s typical,” Mitchell said of the snowfall in Perrysburg. “It’s right in the sweet spot to get a lot of snow.”

Roads remained mostly clear during the snowfall, with few accidents being reported due to the weather.

According to a Cattaraugus County Sheriff ’s Department dispatcher, there were “a few cars off the roadway” in the Perrysburg area.

“Nothing major.”

A winter storm warning for the region, which had been issued at 8:55 a.m., was canceled at 6 p.m.

Saturday.

The wintry weather was expected to continue throughout the week with the possibility of more snow in the forecast, which was perfect for snowmaking.

Snowmaking operations

could resume Saturday evening with more cold weather and possible snow through the week.

It is important to remember that the weather can change at any time.

At this time, Holiday Valley plans to stockpile the snow with an anticipated opening for its 62nd season on Nov. 23, but changes in the weather could move that.

Snow showers are predicted for Friday and Saturday with lows of 31 degrees and 19 degrees, respectively. Although snow could cease Sunday, it would still be cold enough with a high of 32 for snowmaking operations to continue.

Great Valley board approves 2019 budget with zero town tax

By Kellen M. Quigley The Great Valley Town Board has approved a $918,359 budget for 2019 that will include zero town tax.

Following a couple months of work sessions and a public hearing Nov. 5, the town unanimously passed the preliminary budget with no town tax, mostly as a way to balance out the dramatic

increase seen in 2018’s tax bills.

“The town will run 2019 on the sale tax it’s collected,” explained Town Supervisor Daniel Brown.

So far in 2018, the town has collected about $424,000 in sales tax.

Brown said a fourth check for the last quarter of 2018 will come in February or March of 2019.

The Western New York Class C South division recently announced its 2018 postseason all-star teams and award winners, with the Franklinville/ Ellicottville football team earning four first-team selections.

Last year, the board had voted to take its sales tax revenues in cash rather than applying that amount to the county tax levy on town property, which reduces town taxpayers’ county taxes.

The intent was to reduce town taxes while increasing county taxes at the same amount so that everybody’s town taxes would be lower and county taxes equally higher.

Instead of $79,500, the town board could have

appropriated around $450,000, its share of sales taxes generated outside the cities of Olean and Salamanca.

In March, the town voted to offset that one-time 2018 increase by reducing residents’ town taxes to zero for 2019. Moving forward in 2020, town taxes will be influenced by the transition to sales taxes in the budget.

“Next year, we’re going to be coming back online where we will need to

create a tax levy,” Brown explained. “How much?

We won’t really know.”

Factors such as how much funds are needed for winter highway maintenance or sales tax generating more than anticipated could affect what 2020’s levy would be, Brown said.

“That’s just like any other budget year,” he added. “When we start 2020, hopefully, we’ll have a lot of reserve money left over, and we can smooth into that, too.”

“That and our reserved money is what will run the town in 2019,” he said.

For the 2019 budget, about $500,000 is expected to be used through sales tax with the remaining $418,359 coming from reserve balance funds.

Brown said there will still be a county tax, a fire district tax and a tax for any person who owns property in a special district, such as for the Fairview sewer, on residents’ tax bills.

By Deb Everts Enjoy a relaxing, an old-fashioned “Christmas in Ellicottville” Nov. 23 through 25, when visitors will feel the holiday spirit as they are transported to a scene reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting.

Presented by Wingate by Wyndham and produced by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, the event offers a weekend full of free, family-oriented activities that will please all ages. The festivities begin Friday, Nov. 23 at noon and wrap up on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m.

“Christmas is a time we all look forward to,” said Barb Pump, events manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. “We get to spend time with our families and savor each and every memory we create.

Each day, kids will have the opportunity to ride a firetruck with Santa and enjoy interactive children’s activities at the Wingate by Wyndham.

People can tour the village on a horse-drawn wagon ride, or stroll downtown and enjoy the storefronts decorated in a Christmas theme.

“Christmas in Ellicottville allows us to help create those memories your family will be able to cherish and remember for years to come, and that is why we love this event,” Pump said. “To be able to create an event that is free and so many enjoy is what we strive for.”

At 5:30 p.m. Friday, Santa, his carolers and Rudolph will stroll from Katy’s through the village to the post office, on Washington Street, where songs will be sung and a real live reindeer will arrive at 6 p.m.

Hot chocolate will be available, compliments of Holiday Valley.

A countdown will take place for Santa to magically flip the switch to light up the Community Christmas Tree and the rest of the village at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday’s festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a pancake breakfast with Santa. Hosted by Finnerty’s Tap Room on Saturday and Villagio on Sunday, attendees may give non-perishable food items or monetary donations for the Ellicottville Food Pantry.

Two Projects Cause Stir at Planning Board Meeting

The November meeting of the Village Planning Board opened with a Public Hearing regarding the project at 5 Park Square.

This would be a firstfloor office with residence on the second floor. A handicap ramp on the east side and exterior exit from the second floor would be added on the West Side. This property is in the Village Commercial District bounded by the Village Residential District. There is an issue with one side yard setback and the applicant will need to obtain a zoning variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals.

There was an attorney present representing the owners of the Jefferson Inn and Bed & Breakfast that is operated in the adjacent building. They have a few conditions that they would like met for this project to be allowed.

First, they would like the ensure that the second floor cannot be operated as a short-term rental.

There is already a carriage

apartment in the back of the property and they feel that three potential uses on that small of a lot is too much. Second, they would like a walkway put on the other side of the building to encourage foot traffic to the back apartment away from the Inn. Last, that construction would take place during regular business hours as not to disturb guests.

Their attorney stated the owners are excited about this project and cannot wait to see 5 Park Square updated as it has fallen into sub-par conditions.

They feel that their conditions are easily met and reasonable. Village Planner Gary Palumbo noted at the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting that the owner on the west side of the building is not happy with a potential walkway on his side which would bring the foot traffic and noise to him.

Their attorney also noted that nothing would stop them in the future from renting out the second floor as well. They were advised that a Special Use Permit is needed for

Short Term Rentals and there would be notice and a public hearing to issue. The Planning Board advised the Jefferson Inn’s attorney that they would consult with the Village attorney on their proposed conditions.

Because this is a Type One Action under the State Environmental Quality Review a coordinated review is required. The Planning Board has taken lead agency with the Zoning Board of Appeals and, in order for them to grant their variance a determination of nonsignificance must be made first.

There was a motion for a determination of nonsignificance stating this project would have no adverse environmental

impacts. Next, there was a motion to issue a Negative Declaration for this Type One Action under SEQR. Because the ZBA still needs to act there was a motion to table the matter.

There were two preapplication meetings, the first regarding 74 Elizabeth St. There was much discussion regarding the property. The owner Phil Vogt bought the property under the impression he could demolish the current home that is in poor condition. After looking further into the matter, Code Enforcement Officer Kelly Fredrickson found that the home could not be demolished unless there was an approved site plan for a new residence.

the owner had taken off siding and piled wood chips in the front yard.

There are claims that he wanted to make it look so bad the village would make him tear it down without a site plan. Vogt claims that this is not the case and he started to remove siding before he knew he couldn’t demolish the building and the wood chips were from taking down trees in the backyard.

To this, Doug Bush responded that he did not believe this and heard from a few different people varying stories. Nancy Rogan, chairperson, interjected saying that she appreciates all of the work Phil has done in the community and knows what good work he does.

She asked that he present

a site plan, architectural piece and materials list that complies with all zoning regulations for a proposed residence to get the demolition permit.

When the time comes that the lot is sold should the buyer want to tweak the plans, they may come back to the planning board for a site plan modification.

The second preapplication meeting is concerning a minor subdivision to be located at 41 Mechanic St. This matter was discussed briefly as there needs to be more investigation into the current zoning and how to properly proceed.

The next meeting of the Village Planning Board will take place Dec. 11.

The location is to be determined.

No, not booze. I’m talking about soft drinks. According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, the average American guzzles 44.7 gallons of the sweet stuff every year.

Not sure what 44.7 gallons looks like? It’s about what you’d need to fill a small kiddie pool.

But the truth is, you don’t need me to tell you that soda isn’t healthy. We all know that America’s drink of choice contributes to our country’s ever-expanding obesity problem. But, as Rodale.com writer Leah Zerbe discovered, love handles are just the

beginning. Read on for her report on three shocking soda facts that will have you saying “Just water, please” from now on.

Shocking Soda Fact #1: Soda fattens up your organs A recent Danish study revealed that drinking nondiet soda leads to dramatic increases in dangerous hardto-detect fats. Researchers asked participants to drink either regular soda, milk containing the same amount of calories as regular soda, diet cola or water every day for six months.

The results? Total fat mass remained the same across all beverage-consuming groups, but regular-soda drinkers experienced dramatic

increases in harmful hidden fats, including liver fat and skeletal fat. The regular-soda group also experienced an 11 percent increase in cholesterol compared to the other groups.

And don’t think switching to diet varieties will save you from harm: artificial sweeteners Kim and food dyes have been linked to brain cell damage and hyperactivity,

and research has shown that people who drink diet soda have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

Shocking Soda Fact #2: Soda contains flameretardants Some popular soda brands, including Mountain Dew, use brominated vegetable Duke oil — a toxic flame retardant — to keep the artificial flavoring from

separating from the rest of the liquid. This hazardous ingredient — sometimes listed as BVO on soda and sports drinks — can cause bromide poisoning symptoms like skin lesions and memory loss, as well as nerve disorders. If that’s not a good enough reason not to “Do the Dew,” I don’t know what is.

Shocking Soda Fact #3: Drinking soda makes you a lab rat Many American soda brands are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, a heart-harming man-made compound derived mainly from genetically engineered corn.

The problem? Genetically engineered ingredients have

only been in our food chain since the 1990s, and we don’t know their long-term health impacts because the corporations that developed the crops never had to test them for long-term safety.

Case in point: Some recent findings suggest that genetically engineered crops are linked to digestive tract damage, accelerated aging and even infertility.

So, what to do if you are a soda pop drinker? Switch to water or bubbly flavored waters. Or at least, decrease the amount of soda you drink. You will be surprised how good your body will feel and how your waistline will shrink.

Camp JYC receives Manley Trust funds to heat the lodge FRANKLINVILLE — Manley Trust, administered by Key Bank, has awarded a $9,000 grant to Camp JYC. The grant was used to purchase and install a new high-efficiency furnace for the main lodge. Camp JYC is a youth camp, owned and operated by First Baptist Church of Franklinville, that has been in operation since 1951. Starting at

Allegany State Park, it moved to a parcel of land of about 160 acres on Trowbridge Road in Franklinville, as a gift from William Clark in 1960.

Last summer 131 campers, ages pre-K through 11th grade, and from all over western New York, attended with nine paid counselors; three counselors in training; six teachers; and 50 or more volunteers. The camp

Joyce Ginnery HUMPHREY — Mrs. Joyce Ginnery, 83, of Humphrey, died Thursday (Nov. 8, 2018) at Olean General Hospital, following a short illness.

Born April 27, 1935, in Youngsville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Hazel Webster Herlet. She was married on June 7, 1986, to George “Tony” Ginnery, who predeceased her on Nov. 24, 1989.

She was employed in the kitchen at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, in Allegany, for over 10 years, retiring in 1989.

Mrs. Ginnery loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends. Joyce loved to cook for her family and was well known for her baking skills. She also loved going to Bingo. She will be remembered for growing beautiful flowers.

She was a lifetime member of the Humphrey Fire Company.

Surviving are a son, Harry (Mary) Ginnery of Humphrey; four daughters, Violet (Robert) Michels of Salamanca, Helen (Truman) Morris of Ischua, Mary (Donald Jimerson) Ginnery of Humphrey and Sally (Skip Boutwell) Ginnery of Humphrey; two sisters, Shirley Ginnery of Humphrey and Susie Chase of Great Valley; two brothers, Robert Chapman of Humphrey and Gary Chapman Sr. of Springville; numerous grandchildren; greatgrandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Betty Gilman; and two brothers, Roger Chapman and Leon Chapman.

There are several extra special adopted grandchildren; and a special friend, Nicole Good, for being her “go-getter”.

Friends called Nov. 14, 2018, at O’Rourke & O’Rourke Inc. Funeral Home, 25 River St., Salamanca, at which time funeral services were held, with the Rev. Josh Sreundschuh, of the Humphrey Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial was in Green Cemetery, Great Valley.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to the Humphrey Fire Company.

Big bucks in the Southern Tier of New York situation over Matt decided to walk back to the head of the ravine the buck crossed, circle around its head, parallel the ravine at a distance and then turn and sneak directly back toward the spot he believed the buck was waiting.

It was a good plan for three reasons. First, the buck wouldn’t expect Matt to circle the ravine and end up on his side.

Second, Matt would be downwind and, third, Matt would be on high alert, using his binoculars to pick the cover apart as he moved forward. Matt figured the deer would be carefully checking his backtrail almost exclusively.

Once Matt reached the right spot he began stalking forward a step at a time. Fifteen minutes passed, then, the slightest motion ahead, the flick of an ear. It was the buck!

He raised his rifle, his heart pounding, and through the scope stood the buck watching his backtrail through a fallen tree top. Now however, Matt’s stalk had placed him on the same side of the treetop as the buck.

Raising his .270 Short Magnum he calmed himself as much as possible and fired. The big 10-point dropped and Matt’s whoop of success echoed through the forest. He’d done it, outsmarted a cagey

old buck; what an accomplishment!

Holding those beautiful antlers he marveled at the hunting opportunities available just a three-hour drive from his home area.

When Steve saw his trophy and heard the story, Matt had some bragging to do.

By Deb Everts After much curiosity and anticipation among community members, Brick Fitness welcomed the public to its facility at 129 Main St. with a Grand Opening on Oct. 30.

The event gave people the opportunity to stop in for a tour to check out the equipment and available memberships. The first 10 members received a free Brick Fitness T-shirt.

Owners Lacy Roldan and her husband, José, have been busy transforming the space formerly occupied by the Yarn for Ewe shop since May. Lacy said it took a complete renovation to make the former storefront into a fitness center.

“We redid every single square-foot in this gym, as far as painting,” she said.

“We put in a new carpet, a new rubber floor and new windows in the back. We also built the bathroom and the two changing rooms in the back.”

According to Lacy, members have access to 15 strength machines and seven cardio machines (treadmills). There is also a stretch area and a freeweight area.

They give people a tour before selling them a membership, she said. If a member has never used these pieces of equipment, they will teach them how to operate the machines.

People can sign up for a membership and receive instruction during manager hours on Monday 4–6 p.m. only, Tuesday through Friday from

9–11 a.m. and 4–6 p.m.

Members will be given a key fob for access to the gym that is open seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

There are several different monthly membership options to choose from that will fill people’s needs. Lacy said she encourages senior citizens to come in and use the facility at a discounted membership price.

A Single Membership (one adult 18 years or older), $30 per month; Joint (both members must be an adult 18 years or older living at the same address and billed to one account), $50; Family (adults, up to two, and minors between 13-17 years old) living at the same address and billed to one account, $70.

Senior Citizens (adults, 65 and older, and disabled veterans, $20 per month.

Some people may prefer to pay $15 for one week at a time. A one-time $35 card access/programming fee is due at signing.

“We were hoping for at least 10 members to sign up on Grand Opening Day, but we had 30 people buy memberships,” Lacy said. “It was wonderful and definitely shocking for us.”

The couple’s primary goal is to promote health and fitness in their community. Although this is their first time owning a fitness center and they do not have experience in the fitness industry, Lacy said they both have a passion for sports and fitness.

José is from Jamestown.

They have a daughter, Audrina (7) and a son, Andres (3).

Some people may ask why they decided to open a fitness center in Randolph. According to Lacy, their reason began with the closing of the two Snap Fitness locations in Jamestown and the town of Ellicott, in March, where José was working out regularly.

She said the fitness centers were open for about 10 years and, when they closed, it was hard to find another smaller gym where people would feel comfortable working out.

“We’ve been living in Randolph for two years now and we thought, ‘Why not open something in Randolph?’” she said.

“I’ve actually thought about the idea since high school because I was into sports. I’ve always been very athletic and played volleyball my whole life, so I’ve always wished there was a fitness center closer to us.”

Lacy said other people in the community feel the same way. She said some who have come in and joined up commented that they don’t want to risk their lives driving to Jamestown in the winter, and this location will save them time.

“They can get in at least a half-hour workout during the two hours it would take just to get to a gym elsewhere,” she said.

New Case Lake boat launch will honor late Franklinville legislator

FRANKLINVILLE — State Sen. Catharine Young has secured a $50,000 state grant to build a new boat launch at Case Lake.

The new launch will be named the William Weller Memorial Boat Launch in honor of the late Cattaraugus County Legislator William Weller, who lived in Franklinville and represented the community on the Legislature from 2011 until his death in 2016.

Prior to joining the Legislature, he served as the town of Franklinville highway superintendent for 35 years.

“Bill loved Franklinville and he devoted his life to public service, first as Franklinville highway

superintendent and later as a member of the Legislature,” Young said.

“Bill loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. It is wonderful that we remember him in this way.”

When Weller passed away, County Legislator Robert Brenton, R-Franklinville, was appointed to represent the community. He thanked Young for supporting the project.

“We are very, very appreciative of everything Sen. Young has done for our community,” Brenton said. “I think Case Lake is a diamond in the rough.

We want to uncover it and this boat launch will help do that.”

The new boat launch will

allow canoeists, kayakers and others with small boats to launch directly from an aluminum dock onto Case Lake via a system of rollers.

Similar launches are in use along the Allegheny River in Portville and Allegany.

“The boat launches along the Allegheny River have greatly increased the number of canoeists and kayakers on the water,” Young said. “Case Lake is beautiful, but underutilized. This new boat launch will make it easier for local residents, as well as tourists, to access the lake and enjoy its natural surroundings.”

The project will also include a parking area and a driveway.

Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program planning for new equipment purchase Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program (LASP) has set a #GivingTuesday fundraising goal of $8,000. The funds will be used to purchase specialized adaptive ski equipment.

With the funds donated through the month-long Give Adaptive Sports campaign, LASP hopes to purchase a specially designed Dynamique Bi-Ski. The Dynamique model being considered costs over $7,000, according to Program Director William Bredenberg.

This piece of equipment is a state of the art ski that is specially designed to be used by persons with disabilities such as amputations, spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy that do not allow them to ski standing up. #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to kick-off the holiday

giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities by giving back to the charities and causes they support. This is the third year LASP has participated in the nation-wide event.

This season LASP asks #GivingTuesday donors to consider a $30 gift to mark the 30th anniversary of the nonprofit that offers adaptive ski lessons to children and adults with virtually all disabilities, both physical and cognitive.

Commonly encountered disabilities among skiing participants include spinal cord injuries, amputations, Down syndrome, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, visual impairment, autism and developmental delay.

LASP was founded in 1988 in memory of Bill Lounsbury. Bill was a

member of the ski patrol at the Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville who lost a leg to cancer.

He refused to give up the sport he loved and taught himself to ski on one leg.

Since its founding in 1988, LASP has grown from four instructors teaching 14 students in a total of 35 lessons to over 40 instructors who collectively teach more than 250 lessons during a single ski season.

All instructors are volunteers who are specially trained in adaptive ski teaching methods. Over half of these instructors are certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA).

According to Radecki, this is the third year they have held this event as a thank you to the community that has supported them.

They would like to give back once again this year by handing out the makings for 150 to 200 full Thanksgiving dinners to people who need help making ends meet.

Because there is a limit to the dinners, Radecki said they encourage people to get to the event sooner, rather than later, because they will be packed with people lined up to get the food items.

“We know the holiday season is especially hard for many people who just can’t afford it, so we like to bring families together by doing this each year,” he said. “If you think about it, this is a difficult time of year with Christmas coming up. People are saving for that holiday and

they also have other bills to pay.

“Thanksgiving dinner can get pretty expensive and some people don’t have the extra funds, especially with the economy we are in,” he continued. “We want to try to take care of anybody in need, and we want to make sure nobody is going without, especially this time of year.”

Anybody in the area is welcome to come, without any obligation, and take food home to enjoy for Thanksgiving. Radecki said there are many people out in the community who might be in need.

If someone knows of an individual or family in need, they can come down to pick up the dinner and take it to them.

“Last year was a great success,” he said. “We hope to grow this every year and help more and more people in our community.”

Catt County Department of Aging/NYConnects invites you to ‘Supercharge Your Caregiving’ November is National Family Caregivers Month.

This year the Caregiver Action Network has made “Supercharge Your Caregiving!” its theme. The Caregiver Action Network hopes to use this theme to promote awareness of resources available to assist caregivers in successfully meeting their ever-changing demands and challenges.

The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging/NY Connects is a valuable resource available to caregivers.

Caregiver services include care consultations, safety and respite services, support groups and education programs, as well as self-help classes, such as “Powerful Tools for Caregivers.” The department also houses an extensive lending library.

Additionally, with funding from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Department of the Aging provides the popular evidence-based “Tai Chi for Arthritis” class which promotes increased

strength and overall wellbeing.

Caregiving may look different from one caregiver to another, but the significance and impact of being a caregiver are universal. Even a small act such as reaching out to find available resources in your community can be a way to supercharge your caregiving. All caregiver services provided through the Department of the Aging are free of charge and there are no income or age requirements. Last year the Department of the Aging assisted hundreds of caregiver households throughout Cattaraugus County.
