EVL Half MARATHON returns to Ellicottville Oct. 27 By Kellen M. Quigley The village of Ellicottville will be filled with smiling runners in their best costumes this Saturday for the 5th annual EVL Halloween Half Marathon and 5k. Both events begin and end in the heart of the village at 5 Monroe St. The half begins at 11 a.m. and the 5k begins at 11:15. “The whole town is bustling with Halloween excitement and it is wonderful to come to the start/ finish and cheer all the costumed runners along,” said Gwen Bush of Endurance Factor LLC, who organizes the race. Preparations for the following year’s event begin as soon as the current year is over, Bush said. The EVL HALF usually has between 1,800 and 2000

participants. “We like to try to put on well organized and fun-filled events that are open to all types of runners,” she said. The race can be very competitive but for many, the EVL Half and 5K is about a lot more than just running through the beautiful country roads along the course. “We will have a troupe of dancing witches as the runners pass the Fire Department,” Bush explained. “There will be various musicians and Halloween characters cheering athletes on as well.” All race participants will receive custom designed medals, string backpacks and men’s

or women’s shirts. They also can choose to upgrade and add a quarter zip tech long sleeve, while supplies last. Athletes are encouraged to dress up and there is Watson’s Chocolates Costume Contest with six different categories:

ECS boys soccer rolls into Section 6 Class D title game EDEN — The Ellicottville boys soccer team got a later start to its postseason than it anticipated, but appeared ready nonetheless. Scheduled for 2:30 p.m., the Eagles didn’t play Franklinville in the Section 6 Class D semifinals until after 4 due to overtime and a lightning weather delay during Saturday’s early semifinal between North Collins and Pine Valley. Playing on a cold, wet turf amid steady rain all afternoon, Ellicottville ran out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes against the Panthers and rolled to a 9-0 victory. “I was a little nervous,” Eagles coach Matt Finn said of the delay. “We had team breakfast at 10, left Ellicottville at 11, got here at noon and with the delay, with everything else, we actually went in their gym and warmed up a little bit. So that helped.” Mikey McGuire

scored a hat trick and Jack Snyder had two goals to No. 1 Ellicottville (10-6-1), which advanced to the sectional championship Friday against North Collins, which got past Pine Valley, 2-1, in the second overtime. Brennan Finn, Justin Imhoff, Simon Lin and Mitchell Azcarate had one goal each for ECS. Goalie Jamison Caldwell made one save in the shutout. Tyler Folts stopped 17 shots for No. 4 Franklinville (1-15). “I thought our possession was pretty good today,” Finn said. “We moved the ball pretty well. throwback party to benefit ‘A Cattaraugus for Tomorrow’ By Deb Everts In an effort to enrich the community, Ellicottville Events is hosting the “EVL 80s Flashback Vol. 1” throwback party at the Steelbound Brewery & Distillery on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 7 p.m. to midnight. The venue is located at 6600 Route 219. The event is to benefit “A Cattaraugus for Tomorrow,” an organization created by John Nelson and his wife, Samantha (“Sam”) to support communitybased projects. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go towards a children’s museum which will provide indoor activities that are educational, developmental, and work on skill building. There will be a costume contest, so guests should dig out their acid-washed jeans, jean jackets with shoulder pads, parachute pants,

high top shoes and scrunch socks. Music will be provided by “Nerds Gone Wild” who was voted No. 1 at the Buffalo Night Life Music Awards. The Nelsons are business owners and have been residents of Ellicottville for the past six years. John owns the Nelson Law Firm and Samantha owns Ellicottville Events Wedding & Event Planning. Two years ago, Sam and John created “A

Cattaraugus for Tomorrow.” Sam said the idea was that even if they lost the legislative race, they would like to support communitybased projects. She said the idea got put on hold while they worked on other projects, family and life. “During that time, we got the idea to do a ski tree,” she said. “Why? ‘Cause we just wanted to do something better for the village.” According to Sam, the ski tree grew in popularity

and national notoriety in short order. She said despite public support, the village voted to take it down, but the community rallied around the tree and secured its forever home in the village. Along with the support came generous financial support. The 80s party grew out of Sam and John’s mega 80s wedding. Sam said the original idea was to do an annual

fundraiser for the MJ Fox Foundation. As this idea grew, they decided to change the focus to “A Cattaraugus for Tomorrow.” “We love this area and have invested our lives in it,” she said. “We want to continue to see it succeed, so ‘A Cattaraugus for Tomorrow’ will be a way to help that. It will encourage young families to come to the area and stay here, and to continue to build new jobs and reasons for people to visit.” Nelson said their dream has always been to bring a children’s museum to Ellicottville. She said there are three children’s museums in the region — Explore and More in East Aurora; Erie Children’s Museum, Erie, Pa.; and the Strong Museum in Rochester. Since Explore and More is moving to the waterfront in Buffalo, there will no longer be anything in a semi-rural area for parents to take their children to play. “All of Explore and More financials are online because it is a 501C3,” she said. “It appears profitable, based on

She said Ellicottville is the only town of its caliber without a splash pad. “In the time we’ve been in Ellicottville, we’ve met likeminded individuals who do not want to be in political office, but want to further the community. Skiing, senior class trips approved for ECS students By Kellen M. Quigley Students at Ellicottville Central School (ECS) could have two trips to look forward to in 2019 after approval from the Board of Education last week. For those interested, Glenn Hall, the ECS ski club advisor, is coordinating a ski trip to Vermont during the February school recess with the CattaraugusLittle Valley Central School (CLV) ski club. Hall said they’ve attempted to do it in previous years, but this could be the first year where enough kids sign

up. The three-day trip would be Feb. 19–21. “In the last couple years, there’s been some interest in doing a collaborative trip with Cattaraugus-Little Valley,” he said. “If we get enough kids, we’re looking at doing a trip in February.” Hall said he’s been in contact with Dave Doty, a safety patrol member at Holiday Valley and the ski club advisor for CLV, about setting up the trip. He said it would cost about $500 per student. “That would cover the transportation, the lodging and two

meals a day,” he added. Although not set, Hall said the nonrefundable deposit could be between $50 and $100. To run the trip, Hall said they would need at least 40 students signed up between the two school districts. He said part of that number is because the transportation cost would be the same, so having more kids lowers that charge per student. Several board members said they thought it sounds like a great trip. SENIOR CLASS advisor Matt Finn and Class of 2019 president Meganne Chapman also presented to the board concerning the senior class trip for the end of the school year. The chosen trip to Baltimore and Ocean

City, Md., would take place June 22–24. “We offered four proposals to the senior class, and of 43 kids in the class, 32 picked this itinerary,” Finn said. “Obviously, the more kids we get to go, the lower the cost will be.” He said if at least 32 go, the cost would be about $583 per student. Interested students would have to make their $100 deposit for the trip by Oct. 19, Finn said. Chapman said nearly all 32 of the students who picked Maryland are interested in going on the trip. “Some people were still iffy on whether they want to go our not,” she said. Chapman said her class is fairly close and didn’t think many would be persuaded to

not go. “Some of them we might have an issue with, but most of them are pretty independent with their thoughts.” The other offered trips were to Cleveland, Ohio, or Philadelphia, Penn., as well as a Maryland trip with a different itinerary from the one chosen, Finn explained. Some of the trips features would include a dinner cruise in Baltimore on June 22, a day at an amusement park and the beach in Ocean City on June 23 and an aquarium visit in Ocean City on June 24, all of which met the top requirements students said they wanted in a trip during a poll in the spring, Finn. “One of the biggest requirements was the dinner cruise, and

we’re thankful that this company could fit the dinner cruise in for us because sometimes it can be hard to schedule that,” Chapman added. The board commended the senior class for having a senior trip proposal in place in October. Some board members said they thought it is one of the earliest a class has had a trip and estimated price to present to the board. “We got the ball rolling about two months ago,” Finn said. “We have this (proposal) to the parents at our ice cream social in August.” The board also approved the annual eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. in June 2019. IN OTHER BUSINESS: Richard Schaefer was appointed ECS Interim Elementary Principal effective Oct. 10. Chad Bartoszek was appointed ECS Athletic Director effective Oct. 21. The board accepted a donation of 18 iPads from the Ellicottville Rotary Club for the ECS Pre-K classes.

First day at the hospital for ECS Students By Louisa Benatovich When Brennan Finn, Sierra Maybee and I commenced the New Visions program in August, we knew that shadowing at the Olean General Hospital was on the agenda. We were excited, but it didn’t seem quite real. We pushed it to the back of our minds as we adjusted to the new workload. All of a sudden, Oct. 18 arrived. We couldn’t believe it. While everyone at Ellicottville Central School was taking economics or statistics, we would be watching surgeries and live births. Dressed in our lab coats and pristine white shoes, we each made our way to a different corner of the hospital campus. For me, it was the Wound Clinic. It was located in the basement of the Wellness Center behind Olean General, and I made the spooky descent in the elevator.

Titans beat SC/F to reach Funke Bowl final

FRANKLINVILLE — Logan Frank ran and threw for two touchdowns each to lift Franklinville/Ellicottville (4-4) over Silver Creek/ Forestville (2-5) on Friday in the Chuck Funke Memorial Classic Bowl semifinals. The Titans won the Class C bowl semifinal, 28-6. Frank had scoring passes to Tyler Clear for 47 yards and Niklas Logel for 20 yards as the Titans broke the game open with 22 second quarter points. The quarterback rushed for 143 yards on 16 carries. “Most of the first half we were successful offensively,” F/E coach Chad Bartoszek said. “We controlled field position and hit on some things with our passing game.

“In the second half, we were bogged down by field position. We had a couple bad punts, but we made two goal line stands in the red zone. They didn’t get their touchdown until late in the game. We cannot wait to experience all that Olean General has to offer and maybe discover a bit about ourselves in the process.

Cystic Fibrosis: What It Has Taught Me About Life

Everybody faces challenges in their daily lives. Some people face more challenges than others. If there were no hurdles, life would be too easy. That’s what makes life so great. I believe challenges or obstacles are thrown our way to make us grow stronger physically and mentally as human beings. One of the biggest hardships I face every day is living with Cystic Fibrosis. In short, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive hereditary disease that mainly affects the lungs and digestive system. Thick, sticky, mucus builds up in the lungs causing frequent lung infections, hospitalizations,

shortness of breath, scarring of the lung tissue and premature death. The life expectancy today is near 40 years of age. That’s a scary thought when you live with the disease and you’re currently 31. Although it’s a nasty disease, I am grateful for it because it has taught me many things about life. One thing I have learned is the value of time. Time is precious and it is short. Having CF makes me value time because not many people can live that long with this disease. Yes, medical advancements have come a long way since I was born, but we are still seeing too many people who don’t make it to their 40’s 30’s or even 20’s. So given a “life

expectancy” my whole life has made me both cherish and value my time. I love to explore, go on adventures, have fun, laugh, make new friends, help people, be with family and be the best person I can be every day. I’m not saying my life will be cut short, but if it were to be, I want to make sure I’m making the most out of each day. Time is precious so start appreciating your time. Another thing I’ve learned is to never take your health for granted. I believe many people who don’t have health issues take their health for granted. Sadly, it takes a health issue to arise for people to wake up and realize they should never take their health for granted. Try coughing

every day, catching colds easily, doing two hours of breathing treatments a day, taking 50 pills a day, having shortness of breath, going to the doctor every three months and dealing with the anxiety that CF brings. Yes, sounds fun, right? If you have good health be thankful and never take it for granted. Lastly, I’ve learned to appreciate exercise. My passion for exercise has helped me in so many ways. I have normal lung function because I take such good care of myself. On top of doing hours of breathing treatments a day, I also exercise six days a week. Exercise has been my lifeline. If I never started exercising I would not be as healthy as I am today. I may

have been on oxygen at this point in my life. The chance of my life being cut short is what motivates me to stay on top of my health. I will do everything in my power to stay healthy, to live a long life and beat this disease. Exercise plays a significant role in all of that. If you are someone who doesn’t have health issues it’s still important to exercise to help prevent problems from occurring. Exercise is beneficial for you and it’s something you should add to your daily routine. Youth Halloween Party at American Legion on Oct. 31 The Rotary Club of Ellicottville, Foundation for Youth and the American Legion will once again sponsor a free community Halloween party at the American Legion on Maples Road. Don and Diane Pawlowski pumped up Pumpkinville for its 50th anniversary, but couldn’t control the weather. “It’s been a good year,” Don Pawlowski said Monday. “The weather just didn’t cooperate.” But as the ads say, Pumpkinville “is open rain or shine.” While rain may have cut into the usual 100,000 visitors over the six weeks Pumpkinville is open, Pawlowski said

there have been some record days too. They helped balance out some of the more rainy days. “Everybody comes on a good day,” he smiled. Few weekends were washouts, and often the rain was scattered. People who stayed home one weekend came on a weekday afternoon or the following weekend, Pawlowski said. “We brought in 600 tons of stone for the parking lots” and wood chips on the walkways so people didn’t get wet feet. “We’re doing the best we can. Just don’t wear your church shoes.” Pawlowski said the public seems to appreciate the

Pawlowski and the Pumpkinville staff were pleased to learn that Channel 4 viewers in Buffalo voted Pumpkinville “Best Pumpkin Patch” in Western New York. “It was an honor,” he said. “We won by a landslide.” With attendance down

a bit and one weekend to go, Dan said, “We’re looking for a last hurrah.” The good news in all of this is that with “a lot of heat and plenty of rain,” it has been a good season for pumpkins on Sugartown Road, Great Valley. “We’ve had a good crop of pumpkins,” Pawlowski said. “We’re picking more today (Monday).” The bakery, run by Diane Pawlowski, is always busy, rain or shine, Dan said. Pumpkinville makes its own apple cider with an antique cider press. “One more good week,”

Located at 6319 Sommerville Valley Road, this is the last weekend for Nightmare Hayride. Moonlight or rain, Nightmare Hayride is open from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After the hayride, there’s a haunted maze which leads to a haunted barn with a vortex tunnel.
