MacQueen named National Outstanding Nordic Patroller for 2018

Mary MacQueen, patrol director and instructor for Allegany State Park’s (ASP) Nordic Ski Patrol, has been chosen by the National Ski Patrol to receive the “National Outstanding Nordic Patroller for 2018” award.

She will be presented with the award at a ceremony held in her recognition at Allegany State Park’s Red House Administration Building, Jan. 26. MacQueen will be honored at the reception and officially receive her award on behalf of the over 28,000 members of the National Ski Patrol System.

Some of the heaviest snowfall of the season hit Cattaraugus County this past weekend, with accumulations of over a foot in most places.

Jon Hitchcock, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo, reported Sunday that Ellicottville was buried under about 15 inches of snow, while nearby Little Valley received 13 inches.

Musicians, performers and those with vocal talent best prepare their acts because Southern Tier’s Got Talent is coming soon.

Beginning Feb. 2, the regional talent show will invite area performers from across the Southern Tier to vie for cash prizes if they make it through four judged performances at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater in Salamanca.

The event, produced by the Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association, is open to all ages and for both soloists and groups. It all begins with auditions Feb. 2 at the theater, located at 10 Main St. Audience admission is free.

These conditions were excellent for skiers and snowboarders on the slopes in Ellicottville.

“Boy, that snowfall was perfect for us,” said Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at Holiday Valley.

“We loved it.”

Eshbaugh said the resort was quite busy over the weekend and the slopes were in great shape, especially on Sunday.

“That deep powder was really nice,” she added.”

On its Facebook page, Holiday Valley reported all 13 lifts and 60 trails were open on Sunday.

Along with snow showers, sub-zero temperatures also hit some communities. In Cattaraugus County, Ellicottville’s lowest recorded temperature of the past week was Tuesday

at -16 degrees, said Jim Mitchell with NWS in Buffalo.

In a close second was nearby Springville at -15 degrees on Tuesday, the coldest recorded in Erie County.

A wind chill warning issued by NWS in Buffalo on Sunday afternoon was in effect through Tuesday.

Wind chills were expected to fall to 35 degrees below zero in Cattaraugus County and “could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” according to the NWS alert.

“Monday it got a little on the cold side, so it wasn’t as busy as we would have liked, but we still had a great weekend,” Eshbaugh said.

“Driving conditions remain difficult in many places throughout the state,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo Sunday, “and I am urging New Yorkers to avoid unnecessary travel until further notice as this is not a situation to take casually.” Flash freezing of wet roadways can be caused by falling temperatures, leading to dangerous conditions.

by rain on Wednesday, as well as a high of 41 degrees, some more snow showers were expected to roll through Thursday and Friday along with temperatures down in the mid-teens, perfect for skiers and snowboarders.

“That’s going to get the lake effect machine going,” Mitchell said. “It’s going to snow and it’s going to be cold.”

With the lake effect snow and colder air moving through, Mitchell said the winds could be typical to what we’ve seen so far this season, about 15 to 25 mph, along with temperatures in the teens.

“It’s about time,” he said. “We’ve had a pretty warm stretch since before Christmas, so we’re due.

Just making up for lost time.”

That making up for lost time is good news for those planning to hit the slopes this weekend.

“We’re doing well and hoping that it will stay snowy and cold at least through March,” Eshbaugh said. “We’re glad to be able to bring all these people our region to enjoy all of the things we have in Cattaraugus County.”

A silent auction and 50/50 to raise funds for HoliMont’s Phoenix Adaptive Program will also be a part of Men’s Day 2019.

The program’s mission is to ensure that every special needs student, no matter their ability, has an opportunity to experience all the fun and excitement that HoliMont and skiing have to offer.

Each full-season program costs $1,050 for nine weeks and $150 for a single full day. Adaptive equipment is also needed.

The annual goal this year is $20,000. Last year’s Men’s Day raised $5,000.

Party Squad, HoliMont’s house band, will be performing in the lodge after a steak lunch with all the premium fixings.

Kegs of beer, a scotch bar, a bourbon bar and a vodka/caesar bar with all the extras, plus an on-site cigar roller, are sure to start the party and keep it going! Did we mention the best SWAG ever?

Ontario rockers Finger Eleven will be putting on a full concert at 4 p.m. Musicians Scott Anderson (vocals), James Black (guitar), Rick Jackett (guitar) and Sean

Anderson (bass) have released seven studio albums.

An ECS student’s thoughts on an autopsy

As I entered the morgue, the smell didn’t bother me…and that kind of bothered me.

Here I was, on a sunny Friday afternoon, in the sterile morgue of Olean General Hospital, and I was unaffected, excited even.

On the table in front of me, a body lay in anatomical position. It looked so real, unlike the cadavers I’d examined at Daemen College. It looked like the deceased was sleeping, that they’d wake up any minute now. It was disconcerting, but I told myself I had to deal with it.

I gowned up: foot coverings, gloves, gown and visor.

“Just in case you want to lean in close,” they said. I was told the story and shown the victim’s belongings. It was like a mystery; we were searching for the cause of death.

I touched the body, moving the elbow joint slightly, feeling its stiffness.

The skin felt pliable and human under my gloved fingers, but so cold…too cold.

“I don’t know how I’ll react to this,” I informed the physician as he prepared to make the first cut. I steeled myself.

Before I disgust with the gory details, I must explain that I chose this.

Fredrickson, Shattenberg win GS for Eagles

Ellicottville’s Logan Fredrickson repeated in first place for the second time in as many giant slalom meets for the Eagles’ alpine ski team Wednesday.

Logan and her twin sister Hayly Fredrickson took first and second, followed by another pair of ECS sisters, CeCe and Emmylu Carls in third and fourth, all ahead of their Western New York competitors from Gow and Williamsville, at Holiday Valley. Logan led the way with a total time of 48.88

after a first run of :24.81 and second of :24.07, while her sister had a :51.24 (:25.88, :25.36).

The Ellicottville boys also took first and second, with Eric Shattenberg and Adrian deOrbe, and fourth and fifth (Mitchell Azcarate, Emmett Coolidge) from a field of 10 racers.

Shattenberg marked a total time of :51.17 (:25.93, :25.24) and deOrbe had a :52.24 (:26.16, :26.08).

Several students in Cattaraugus County were recently awarded scholarships to attend Alfred State. Two of the local recipients include: • Rachel Frascella of West Valley was awarded a $38,880 “Excellence in Education Scholarship.” Frascella is slated to graduate in 2019 from West Valley Central High School and

has been accepted into the biological science (AAS) program.

• Ned Hartsell of Great Valley was awarded a $4,000 “Academic Distinction Scholarship.” Hartsell is slated to graduate in 2019 from Ellicottville Central School and has been accepted into the mechanical engineering technology (BS) program.

After a day in the laboratory, the pathologist asked me if I wanted to see an autopsy, and I excitedly agreed. I desired to test myself, you see. I wanted to know if I could actually stomach my dream.

Back at the morgue, I watched the scalpel move over mottled skin. I was transfixed. The body’s texture, color and intricacy I found beautiful.

The physician explained as he worked, answering my questions, making sure I saw all structures as he made his way up the abdomen. I was amazed. I had never truly understood the complexity of the human body.

and swelled, but that would be too much. I can describe the feelings, how amazing it is that our mind can separate work and belief, coincide science and religion.

That day, I didn’t see death as a shackle. We weren’t maiming or mutilating, we were giving life to a story whose last pages had been burned. We were bringing justice to the deceased.

Death is a concept we can all understand despite class, creed or belief system. That day, I met with death, and we worked side-by-side. It was not bad or morbid, it was scientific.

There was nothing I could do or feel to change what was in that morgue. All I could do was learn and look to the future.

Catholic Charities announces Appeal goal

Catholic Charities will seek to raise $11 million during its 2019 Appeal.

The fundraising goal is the same as a year ago.

Officials said last week that $1.4 million has already been raised. The theme for the Appeal 2019 is “Help your neighbor find HOPE.” “We thought it was important to share the good news of our early progress with the Appeal. We see it as an encouraging sign to the community and donors that there continues to be enthusiastic support for the critical programs and services that Catholic Charities provides to the most vulnerable populations across Western New York,” said Dennis C. Walczyk, president and CEO, Catholic Charities.

The annual Appeal helps fund 70 programs and services administered

by Catholic Charities across 61 sites in the eight counties of Western New York, along with a number of programs and ministries that benefit all parishes through the Fund for the Faith. Programs and services provided

by Catholic Charities benefited more than 152,000 people in 2018.

Appeal are John and Ruthanne Daly of Buffalo.

John is managing principal of Trautman Associates, an architectural engineering firm and Ruthanne is a fifth-grade teacher in the Kenmore-Tonawanda School District. They also operate O’Dalaigh Real Estate LLC, a familyowned development firm.

“We have great faith that the community, and in particular our supporters in parishes across Western New York, will once again demonstrate their generosity to Catholic Charities to help us achieve our 2019 Appeal goal,” said Appeal Chair John Daly. “With our collective strength, we can ensure that the programs and services provided by Catholic Charities will help our neighbors find hope, now, and in the future.”

Catholic Charities expanded services in 2018 at various new sites, including the opening of the Glynn Family Services Center, which now brings all services provided in Niagara Falls to one location.

In November, Catholic Charities announced the opening of its Workforce and Education Services site on the East Side located near the Northland

Training Center. Also in 2018, Catholic Charities relocated its Cheektowaga office to the AppleTree Business Park to enhance family and community services.

Workforce and Education Services client Evone Hardy shared her experience since coming to Catholic Charities in December to earn a high school equivalency (HSE).

“Everybody is nice.

Everybody is welcoming.

It’s like a family,” said Hardy, who attends classes five days a week.

“The classes are great.

I’m the oldest in my classes but I like to give encouragement to the younger students to help them stay motivated.”

The mother of three children is working on her HSE and then plans to pursue a fashion degree in college. “All my children are grown,” Hardy added, “They all have their high school diplomas and then went to college. I’m the last one. I came in motivated.”

Town of Ellicottville approves updated Comprehensive Plan

The Town of Ellicottville Planning Board recently completed an update to the Comprehensive Plan on charge by the Town Board.

This was a long process and the town board was very happy with the final result. With new language regarding walking paths and bike lanes, it will strengthen grant applications to obtain funds for such additions to the town.

There was discussion on Tamarack Drive needing to be renamed to Northgate Drive. The town has been maintaining (surface treatment) and plowing this drive.

Village Attorney Kathleen Moriarty will draft agreement to transfer the ownership from the Homeowners Association to the town.

In the police report, Tom Castle has resigned from his position to attend the FBI Academy. Don Auge stated he was thankful for Castle’s time with the Ellicottville Police Department and happy for the next step in Castle’s career. All other matters are going well.

In February, there will be a public hearing regarding four Micro Cell Towers proposed by Verizon.

There has been much discussion over the past months as to the update to the Town Center from the NYSERDA Grant.

It includes new windows and updating lights with energy efficient LED bulbs.

Town/Village Engineer Niles Pierson met with Aaron Tiller and Mark Alianello of MDA Consulting Engineers to discuss plans. This project will see a return in under 20 years (condition of being awarded), but Pierson feels large savings will be instant. The board approved awarding the Architectural Design to

MDA Consulting Engineers.

There was discussion on the consolidation of the Town/Village Water District. Pierson has set a goal of July 2020. There are two grants Pierson is working on. One is in regards to an infiltration study as the Town/Village infrastructure is dated. The other is in regard to a well house study including surrounding land uses.

In the Highway Department, there have been minor repairs to trucks and the paver. With the small break in winter, they had the opportunity to fix a handful of potholes.

Under new business, there was a discussion of Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals Chairs. They discussed allowing the individual boards to decide for themselves and present to the board their recommendation for a chair on a yearly basis. This would then be approved by the Town Board.

The board also approved the new Record Retention Policy as well as setting the Boot Drive for May 4. Auge advised there were no issues last year and will have patrolmen to direct traffic. This year’s funds raised will be donated to the Ride for Roswell and the Empire State Ride.

Concerning old business, the EVGV Trail was discussed. There is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Grant for anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000 that is being looked into. A Go Fund Me will be created and Live by the first week of February.

The committee is looking for more volunteers as many of the setbacks that have plagued the board for some time will be coming to a resolution quickly.

The next meeting of the Town Board will take place on Feb. 20, 2019, at 6 p.m. at the Town/Village Hall.

Local officials generally support state electoral reforms

By Rick Miller There are many changes coming in the way elections and voting are handled in New York state that will make it easier — and some say more expensive — for counties.

Early voting, consolidating state and federal primary dates in June and pre-registration of 16- and 17-yearolds seeking driving permits were included in bills adopted on Jan. 14 by the Democraticcontrolled Assembly and Senate.

The New York State Association of Counties warned the changes — particularly early voting — could cost each county in the state between $500,000 and $1 million.

Cattaraugus County Democratic Election Commissioner Kevin Burleson said last week that counties would be required to have at least one location for early voting for 10 days before an election.

There are 44,000 registered voters in the county.

The cost would be determined by the number of locations, the cost of printing additional ballots and hiring election inspectors, Burleson said. An electronic poll book would also be needed to make sure no one voted more than once. Plus, add the cost of a few more electronic voting machines, he said.

Legislative approval would be needed for added costs.

Also, both commissioners would have to agree on a location, Burleson said.

One of the biggest changes for local political parties would be the date to begin circulating petitions — Feb. 26 this year, Burleson said.

“We knew this was coming,” Burleson said. “There would be a savings if there is only one primary date for state and federal

elections.”

Burleson was unsure how the pre-registration of 16- and 17-yearolds would work to automatically enroll them at age 18.

For the proposals to change to no excuse absentee voting and voter registration up to and including Election Day, they would have to be approved by both the Assembly and Senate in two successive years.

The proposed changes to the Constitution would then go to a public referendum, Burleson said.

“The biggest thing around here is that anyone wishing to run this year needs to decide in the next month,”

Burleson said. “We’ve got probably 145 offices up in the election this year. Most towns will have two or three vacancies.”

Cattaraugus County Democratic Party Chairman Frank Puglisi said he thought the election changes voted on by the Democratcontrol state legislature were great. “Any time we can encourage more people to get involved and do their civic duty and vote is a good thing.”

Early voting will mean people will have more time to go out and vote, Puglisi said.

The no excuse absentee voting will also increase opportunities for voting.

“I applaud the Assembly and Senate for voting for these election reforms and expect the governor will sign it,” Puglisi added.

As far as concerns that the election reforms will lead to increased voter fraud, Puglisi

said election clerks in Cattaraugus County “know everybody who walks through the door.

I don’t think you have to worry about voter fraud in Cattaraugus County.”

Robert Keis Sr., Puglisi’s Republican counterpart, said he wasn’t in favor of voting before an election.

“I don’t see where people need that. You have absentee ballots if you are going to be out of the county,” he said.

The Republican Party chairman said, “I would like to see campaigns go right up to the election.

If something happens after you vote early, you can’t take back your vote.”

Keis said he had “no problem” with expanding absentee ballots, noting sometimes it’s inconvenient to get to the polls or people don’t have transportation.

It makes sense, Keis added, to consolidate the state and federal primaries.

“You pay everyone and have the expenses one time,” he said.

Keis isn’t excited at the late February date to start circulating nominating petitions, however. “It’s not a good time to go out and get signatures.”

Currently, party officials have five months to line up candidates and circulate petitions in June. “With the February date to begin circulating petitions, we are asking candidates to commit in January,” Keis pointed out. It could be almost a year between the time a candidate starts running and takes office.

Keis has questions about how the preregistration of 16and 17-year-olds would proceed to automatic registration when they turn 18, including how they would register in a political party.

“I’d also like to see them require some kind of photo I.D. for voters” to eliminate the possibility of voter fraud, not to limit voting, Keis said.

SHORT AND SWEET WORKOUTS

By Kim Duke A couple of my clients told me they do not read my articles because they are too long. My knee-

jerk reaction was to be annoyed, but then I also find myself skimming articles that I find interesting, but go on and on.

So, I thought I would write an article this week that is not only short and sweet but also about short and sweet workouts.

No one wants to spend their entire day in the gym to get results.

Unless you make your living in the gym or on the field of play, it’s not practical or necessary.

A current trend is

developing that involves short workouts, and science is catching up to these time-crunched training sessions, proving that less can be more.

Short workouts, like HIIT or Tabata, can give the same amount of physiological benefit as workouts twice or three times as long. A 2006 study by Martin Gibala, a physiologist at McMaster University in Ontario, showed that a three-minute sequence on a stationary bicycle — 30 seconds of

maximal effort pedaling, followed by a brief rest, repeated five or six times — led to the same health benefits as 90 to 120 minutes of steady-state cycling.

Even taking a break at work/home to huff it up and down the stairs for three, five or even 10 minutes can be the extra exercise you need to get you past a fitness plateau. Add some triceps dips and inclined push-ups to your routine and you are golden.

For this article, I Googled ‘Short and

sweet workouts,’ and a variety of exercise ideas for all fitness levels popped up. So, if you’re lacking ideas, that’s a good place to start.

Even better, ask a professional. If you already train at a gym or studio, do not hesitate to pick the brains of your fitness instructor or personal trainer. Often times these individuals can quickly give you a precise formula to fit your specific needs since they have either worked with you or know your abilities/limitations.

Sounds great, right?

Wait, what exactly are those benefits anyway? Some of the benefits are improved endurance capacity, better blood pressure and even a reduction in blood sugar levels after exercise. Keeping a more consistent exercise routine will also help your waistline and help improve your overall mood.

And remember: you can never expect to succeed if you only put in work on the days you feel like it.

Windsong Mobile Mammography coming to Holiday Valley in March

Although early detection of breast cancer is saving lives, many women in the rural areas have difficulty getting to a facility to get the breast cancer screening which makes all the difference.

Fortunately for the many women who live and work in Cattaraugus County, they will have the ability to get screened when Holiday Valley hosts Windsong’s mobile mammography program this March.

Windsong’s mobile mammography unit will partner with the Holiday Valley Wellness Committee and have breast cancer screening available on March 13, 2019, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Holiday Valley Rental Management and Realty Office parking lot across from the Inn at Holiday Valley.

This partnership will provide easy access to breast cancer screening for many women who work and live in

the area.

Women are reminded that a doctor’s script is required for the breast cancer screening which is covered by insurance. They are encouraged to schedule their appointment to minimize wait time.

Women without insurance are also welcome and are encouraged to call ahead.

According to Dr. Markus Holzhauer, medical director of the mobile unit, the goal of the mobile mammography unit is to eliminate barriers to this life-saving exam.

Early detection of breast cancer, when it is most easily treated, does save lives.

Having Windsong’s mobile breast cancer screening driving early detection eliminates the transportation barriers in underserved communities throughout Western New York.

RIT selects EVL Engineering for student projects

By Caitlin Croft The January meeting of the Ellicottville Village Board opened with good news.

A check was received from New York state for the amount of $28,923.29. The check comprised of payments from the following three funds: Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), PAVE-NY and WIRP. The board approved the previous meeting minutes with minor revisions including Patra Lowes voting against one motion. The board also approved budget modifications totaling roughly $18,188.00. Trustee Lowes abstaining as she just received the modifications and did not have time to review.

In the mayor’s report, there was discussion regarding the R.A. Mercer/ Williamson Law Update Joint Session that took place on Jan. 11, 2019.

Previously a bill was received from R.A. Mercer for work done on the year end accounting. This bill was significantly higher than the budgeted amount and what is characteristic of their usual agreement.

It was explained that there was a problem with the new accounting program purchased by the village and the compatibility with the data processing program needed to properly close out the year. The board has yet to pay this bill as the issue is still being worked out.

This meeting went smoothly and Trustee Greg Cappelli asked, “Is this problem resolved, if not why didn’t it get resolved initially?” This is in regard to the bill being presented in the second quarter of 2018 after the fiscal year of 2017 had been closed.

With fiscal year end approaching the board does not want to see these same issues arise as last year. There needs to be a resolution that works for all was the consensus of the board. This issue is ongoing but there has been reassurance that last years problems will not be repeated.

There is a proposed elimination of AIM funding which accounted for roughly 2.21 percent of the budget and was a part of the funds received in this month’s good news. This is not good news for the village and is a statewide issue.

The village has not been reimbursed by the state for costs paid out that were instrumental in the formation of the Town/Village Engineering Department. These funds were promised via a CFA Engineering Grant where the village would be reimbursed for.

Part of the budget modifications made earlier in the meeting are due to the state not sending the reimbursements. The Department of

State is looking into it and there will hopefully be a quick resolution.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, Village Planner Gary Palumbo advised that some of the work he has put into the current Verizon Micro Cell Tower Project will be paid by Verizon.

The Town is holding a joint Public Hearing on Monday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Town Center and Palumbo urged board members to attend as the village will have their public hearing next month.

The board approved the second and third phase of the Lagoon Master Installation and awarded the bid to Gerwitz & McNeil. G&M was the lowest bid and has done the most work on the facility to date, therefore having an inherent understanding of the facility. The board established a Capital Fund Balance Policy.

There was discussion on the consolidation of the Town/Village Water District. Niles Pierson, Town/ Village Engineer has set a goal of July 2020. There are two grants Pierson is working on. The Engineering Department has been selected by RIT to work closely with two engineering student groups on a project for their degree. The students will, at no cost to the village, learn about the current facilities, processes and procedures. They are then charged to design a state of the art DPW Building.

Part of this project will include studying the economics of remodeling vs. building new. There will be a demo of a sewer truck and camera system that can inspect lines. Pierson feels this will be instrumental in the examination of sewer lines and prioritizing repairs and replacement in a fiscally responsible manner.

This can also be a way to generate income as it can be rented out to other municipalities.

There have been a handful of issues with cars parking over the sidewalks in driveways. During the winter months, this makes it difficult to plow and maintain. Lowes asked if there is a way to ticket, as it’s illegal. This will be enforced in the future.

“Also, if we are promoting a ‘Walkable Village,’ the sidewalks must be plowed properly with no obstructions,” advocates Lowes.

“Everything is beautiful, but the sidewalks,” said Joseph DiPasquale I refuse, all is good except the issue with cardboard put out in the business district during peak visitor times. A solution is being worked towards.

SNAP benefits applications accepted despite shutdown, county says

Cattaraugus County residents can be assured they can continue to apply for SNAP benefits at the county’s Department of Social Services for now, despite the federal government shutdown.

Department of Social Services Commissioner Anthony Turano said the county will continue to take applications for the program in person, by mail and online using mybenefits.ny.gov., despite the shutdown, until given direction by federal and/or state authorities not to process the forms.

Turano said he wants to stop concerns of area residents receiving SNAP, who may have heard otherwise. SNAP is the largest DSS income program with about 13,000 people in Cattaraugus County receiving benefits to purchase food, under federally-set income guidelines.

Turano said concerns about the shutdown have led to some of those

people worrying about their food supply.

Despite that, he said, the county’s staff has received no direction to stop taking the applications for the federally-funded program at this time.

Some SNAP recipients may receive their February allotment at the end of January and will need to budget these benefits to last through February.

SNAP is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and New York officials report there is funding for SNAP, through February.

It is uncertain if the shutdown situation will be resolved by then, but SNAP applications will continue to be processed by the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services staff until given direction otherwise.

Cattaraugus County 4-H’ers staying busy during winter

By Deb Everts Members of the 4-H are busy with programs throughout the year, even in the winter months. Many of the activities are in preparation for upcoming events during the summer months, including fair week.

With all the programs offered, Abigail Luzier, 4-H youth development educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County, said the goal is to make the kids well-rounded citizens of the community.

She said the 4-H educators focus on the “Head, Heart, Hands and Health” aspect, which is represented by the four “Hs” in 4-H. According to the National 4-H Council, they are the four values members work on through fun and engaging programs.

“We try to incorporate that ‘handson learning’ and the different ideas that go with it,” Luzier said. “With Hands, you think of teamwork, selfmotivation; Health, personal safety, stress management and discipline.

The Head involves critical thinking and problem-solving. Heart goes with sharing, social skills, cooperation and communication. We try to incorporate that in all of our programs.”

Some people might think winter is a slow time for 4-H members, but a full schedule is offered to keep the kids on track and ready to compete in various competitions throughout the year.

“Right now, a lot of the kids are getting their fair projects ready,” Luzier said. “Those raising beef and dairy steers have already been working on their project. They’ve been grooming them and training them to lead.”

A lot of the members start their projects either right after the fair or in October and November, she explained.

The kids who do the smaller livestock — like pigs, sheep and goats — are just beginning their projects because some of those animals are just being born.

Back in November, the 4-H office had a “Public Presentation Award Trip” to the Erie Zoo. Luzier said, to qualify for the trip, members have to do a public presentation at the county-level and be selected to go to either the district competition or the regional competition, which they have to attend.

Then, they are eligible to go on the award trip.

“They can pick any topic they are interested in so, for example, a lot of our horse exhibitors have to do a presentation. They can choose a horse topic, or a lot of kids pick a sport they are interested in,” she said. “Some of the older kids focus more on a career path and talk about what they want to do in college or after high school.”

According to Luzier, the presentation can be public speaking with a PowerPoint presentation, a demonstration on how to make cookies or how to tie different types

of knots properly.

The county-level public presentations will take place at the Otto Immanuel Lutheran Church Feb. 16. This is required for horse members and it’s an educational opportunity for non-horse members.

ARCHERY IS THE focus this time of year because the members can’t get outside during the winter months, Luzier. She said the kids can go to S & S Archery, in Springville, or the Hideaway Archery, in South Dayton, on scheduled dates. When the weather is nice, the kids can go to the Ellicottville Sportsmen’s Club where they can become certified in Shotgun.

An Open Sewing Workshop is coming up Jan. 25 at the extension office. Luzier said it’s for the kids to bring the projects they’re working on to prepare for the District Fashion Review scheduled for June 1. She said the Ellicottville office will be hosting the event for the district that covers Cattaraugus, Allegany, Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara and Orleans counties.

Luzier said the knowledgebased Dairy Bowl and Horse Bowl competitions are popular. She said they are Jeopardy-style quiz bowls, so they have moderators who ask questions and then the kids buzz in to answer those questions and get points.

The next county Horse Bowl is Feb. 23 at the extension center, and the Regional Dairy Bowl, hosted by Wyoming County, is March 2.

Pheasant Rearing is a favorite project for many 4-Hers who want to help meet the demand for pheasant hunting opportunities. The extension office will hold an information night, Feb. 28.

Ag Literacy week is coming in March. Luzier said it’s an annual event they do with local elementary schools, libraries and home school groups. She said New York Agriculture in the Classroom (NYAITC) sponsors a book every year with an agricultural theme.

“This year’s theme is ‘On the Farm at the Market’ by G. Brian Karas, so it focuses on producers growing their items, then taking them to the farmers’ market and seeing the consumers who come through there,” she said.

The reading program helps kids to better understand the agricultural industry and how food gets to their table, Luzier explained. Although some schools offer an agricultural program, many in the county don’t, so it helps get awareness out to the kids.

Luzier said they appreciate what the 4-H club leaders do with the kids. To thank the leaders for all they did last year, Luzier and Carrie Busekist, who is also a 4-H Educator, presented them with tickets to the Festival of Lights at the Hamburg Fairgrounds.

HomeCare & Hospice Foundation seeking volunteers for Spring Bouquet Sale

The HomeCare & Hospice Foundation is seeking volunteers for the upcoming 25th annual Spring Bouquet Sale.

Proceeds from the annual fundraiser will benefit terminally ill hospice patients and their families throughout Allegany, Cattaraugus, Genesee and Wyoming counties, and will also support services for the frail elderly, disabled and those recovering from advanced illness.

Volunteers are needed March 3 at sorting sites in Olean, Batavia and Warsaw to help with bouquet preparation; March 4 and 5 to help deliver bouquets; and on March 5 and 6, to help with onsite sales at businesses and organizations throughout Olean.

In Olean, volunteers will gather at the First Baptist Church, 133 S. Union St.; in Batavia at the ARC Community Center, 38 Woodrow Road; and in Warsaw at the HomeCare & Hospice office, 450 N. Main St. “Our wonderful volunteers are

essential to our annual Spring Bouquet Sale,” said Ink Young, director of Organizational Advancement. “The generous support of our communities is what enables us to continue providing essential, high-quality care throughout Western New York.”

Snowmobilers thankful that snow storm opened trails

By Rick Miller That collective sigh of relief heard across Cattaraugus County over the weekend was from snow-starved, die-hard snowmobilers hitting the trails for the first time this season.

The general snowstorm that struck Western New York on Saturday left enough snow in its wake to open hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails in the county, including Allegany State Park.

Dozens of businesses that depend on snowmobile traffic, from restaurants and bars to gas stations and grocery stores, and their employees, are grateful for the snow, too.

For snowmobile owners who have been waiting since Dec. 19 for the snowmobile trails to open, it’s been a long five-week ordeal.

Before this storm, there was never enough snow to groom, let alone open up the trails, which cross hundreds of landowners’ properties. Most areas of the county got 12 to 18 inches of snow.

“We opened up on Sunday,” said Cathy Hill, vice president in charge of trails for the Cattaraugus County Snowmobile Federation.

“We got a lot of snow on Saturday and were able to groom so we

could open Sunday. The grooming helps pack the snow down” and make for a better, safer ride.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we don’t lose too much snow to the upcoming warm weather,” Hill said Tuesday, referring to the warmup forecast for today. “I don’t think it’s going to hurt us too bad.”

Hill said, “Everybody was very happy to see the snow. The local businesses are tickled.

We lost the last weeks of December and the first part of January.”

Now that trails have opened, it’s important to ride safely, Hill said. “No matter how experienced you are, take it easy.

Use your head, not your thumb (throttle).”

Most accidents involve speed, she said. “Take it easy.”

At the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, Jacquie Gardner works to update the department’s website at enchantedmountains.com and its Facebook pages now that the snowmobile trails are open. Riders can also call (800) 331-0543 (option 3) for snowmobile conditions and trail openings and closings.

“You have to be very, very cautious right after the trails open,” Gardner

said. “It’s early in the season. Most trails are in fair condition. Be sure to use caution. Respect landowners and stay on trails.”

Gardner said there are slightly more trails than last year, which are detailed in a new brochure. Call the tollfree number or go online for a free map.

This weekend, New York state is sponsoring its annual Free Snowmobile Weekend for out-ofstate snowmobilers.

Their sleds need to be registered and insured in their home state.

New York waives its registration for this weekend, Gardner said.

Allegany State Park opened its snowmobile trails on Sunday as well. The trails have not been groomed and are officially listed in “poor condition.”

Kathleen Boger, state park manager of the Quaker Area, said, “Conditions may affect your snowmobile handling. Ride with caution” while obeying speed limits on park roads.

“We continue to assess the trails for downed trees/limbs due to heavy snowfall and continuing wind,” she said.

Empire State Winter Games Torch Relay to set off from Ellicottville on Jan. 27

The torch relay for the 39th Empire State Winter Games will wind its way through Ellicottville on Sunday, Jan. 27 on its way to Lake Placid for the opening ceremony.

Holiday Valley will host a torch relay send-off party from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Training Center.

“If everything works, they’re going to be running up the Holiday Valley Road, hand the torch of to somebody at the Traing Center, will ride up the lift and then ski down Yodeler or Eidlewise and back to the Training Center,” said Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at Holiday Valley.

The party will begin with the arrival of the torch carried by a snowboarder down the mountain.

Complimentary food and drinks will be served in the training center to follow.

The Empire State Winter Games is a multi-day sports event that is used to bring together winter sports athletes from across New York state and beyond.

For 39 years the Empire State Winter Games have offered a platform for more

than 2,100 athletes of all ages to compete in over 30 winter sports events. Some events include alpine, luge, bobsled, cross country, hockey and snowboard cross. The games are located in New York’s Adirondacks and take place from Jan. 31 through Feb. 3.

A torch relay is used to kick-off the beginning of the Empire State Winter Games. Two torches will travel across New York state, each on separate routes for five days, one beginning in NYC and the

other in Buffalo.

For the Buffalo route, the torch will begin at Holiday Valley before moving to Jamestown, up to Gowanda, over to Yorkshire and then to Kissing bridge Snow Sports in Glendwood before heading to the Buffalo area.

WVDP saves $1.8M through sharing equipment

Two Department of Energy Environmental Management (DOE-EM) sites have saved more than $1.8 million by sharing heavy-duty equipment for large demolition activities, and the savings continue to grow.

“Working together, these two DOE-EM sites found a way to increase cost-savings. Many times, innovation results just from thinking differently about how we conduct our business, and this is a good example,” said EM Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Mark Gilbertson.

“West Valley and SPRU figured that out in this case.

We need to continue our efforts to enhance safety, reduce risks, and increase cost-effectiveness.”

In December, workers at the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) received an excavator from the EM program at Separations Process Research Unit (SPRU) in Niskayuna.

EM workers at SPRU also delivered a heavyduty hydraulic hammer and shears to the site in October. EM received two larger excavators at WVDP last week under this arrangement.

Among those expected to attend will be the 18 volunteer Nordic Ski Patrollers who serve under MacQueen’s leadership, Western New York Region Director Dan Meess, Allegany State Park Manager Tom Livak and John Snyder, Red House manager.

MacQueen said it’s a big honor to be chosen to receive this award from the National Ski Patrol, and she couldn’t imagine getting anything nicer. She said it’s a gift.

“It’s an honor, but it’s also funny because those of us who love the ski patrol — it’s in our blood,” she said. “Anytime there’s an event or a training going on in our division [Eastern Division of the National Ski Patrol], we go because it’s our friends who are there teaching. We don’t go because we have to; we go because we want to. These people are like family. It’s more of the camaraderie than anything else.

MacQueen liked the Mountain Travel and Rescue and Nordic aspects so much that, along with her husband, Butch MacQueen, who is a Nordic Master, she decided to start the first Nordic Patrol in Western New York at Allegany State Park in 2002.

She said four patrollers out of the original five still volunteer on the ski patrol. Besides herself, the other three are Butch MacQueen, Bill Westner and Gary Maslanka.

As the founder of Kinzua Search Dogs and involved in search and rescue teams in New York State since about 1995, MacQueen was accepted into the Nordic Master program. In April 2017, she became one of 11 Nordic Masters in the country, which is the highest level in the National Ski Patrol.

As a matter-of-fact, she is one of only two women in the nation who have earned the certification.

For more than four years, MacQueen worked on her Nordic Master certification. During that time, she trained mostly in the Eastern Division of the National Ski Patrol that encompasses 15 regions throughout the Northeastern

United States.

MacQueen said being a Nordic Master enables her to better train the volunteers of the ASP Nordic Ski Patrol on the highest level. She said the status enables her to be a little more knowledgeable in the information that she disseminates to the people, as well as having more “tricks of the trade” up her sleeve, so to speak.

“One of the classes you must have to be a Nordic ski patroller, as opposed to Alpine, is called ‘Mountain Travel and Rescue,’” she said. “That class teaches you about navigation, shelters and travel in the outdoors, as well as hazards like avalanches and a higher level of first aid. The first aid skills are geared more toward long-term care of an injured person because it could be hours or days before help arrives. So, every year, we have to refresh on it.”

MacQueen said being a Nordic patroller is a lot more than giving first aid. There’s also a lot of public relations involved. She said when they get to the warming hut at Summit in the park and talk to people, a lot of times they want to know how the trail conditions are and where they can rent equipment.

“Typically, a lot of people who go cross country skiing have never done it before and don’t know how to do it, so when the patrollers are there and see somebody having difficulty on the trail, they’ll stop and give them a hand along with some ski tips to help them get interested in the sport and to make their trip out a little more enjoyable,” she said.

According to MacQueen, she keeps doing this service for Allegany State Park because it gives her the continued opportunity to do what she loves to do, which is being in the outdoors hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and helping the public.

She said the Nordic patrollers do it because they really love the outdoors, so the nice thing about this award is it’s
