Hit the slopes during January for great opportunities

As winter finally rolls in and feels like it’s here for the long term, why not spend a day (or two) on the slopes this January, the perfect month for skiing, snowboarding and all things snow sports.

January is National Learn a Snowsport Month, and Holiday Valley will be offering some great deals for adults all month long.

As of press time, 10 lifts at Holiday Valley were spinning and 28 trails were open, and at HoliMont five lifts were running with 13 trails open. However, those numbers are sure to See Hit The Slopes, page 11

Back again for its 19th year, the popular blues- and jazz-packed weekend kicks off next Friday evening and continues through Sunday.

Empire Cup Series Begins!

With the holidays in our rear view, junior racers all over Western New York are buckling down for what is looking to be an eventful 2019 race season.

Mother Nature has made many races a challenge with rain, sleet and varying snow conditions on the race hills.

Thankfully this past weekend she was kind for the opening weekend of the Empire Cup Series.

In these races, athletes will qualify for the Winter Empire State Games held in Lake Placid. The state is split into two divisions, East and West. This past weekend two slaloms were held at Holiday Valley and HoliMont.

Day One, Holiday Valley U21/19 Women: Lauren Thomas of Stratton Mountain School (formerly Holiday Valley) won the race by 2.87 seconds. Zoe Knauss of HoliMont and Hayly Fredrickson (HV) rounded out the podium with the silver and bronze respectively. Kate Masliwec (HO) finished 6th, U21/19 Men: Michael Mercer (HV) finished 4th, Nicholas Scott (HO) 10th, Maxxon Solly (HO) 11th, Lucas Johnson (HO) 17th, William Peters (HO) 25th and Joshua Allegra (HV) 29th.

General-level amateur radio license class set for Jan. 19 The Pioneer Radio Operators Society (PROS) and Cattaraugus County Amateur Radio Exam Team (CCARET) will begin General to Extra and Tech to General level amateur radio licensing class on Jan. 19.

The class will be held at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, 224 E. Main St., in Springville at 10 a.m.

to 4 p.m., and runs for about eight weeks.

Lunch is not provided.

There is no class fee, but attendees will need a study guide, which is available for $25 for General and $30 for Extra and can be purchased at the first class.

This year alone they came from Liverpool, England to Australia and published articles praising our community.

Media in Ontario, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and other surrounding states have all visited.

Looking at our website stats, the third most visits to ellicottvilleny.com are now from New York City, which followed Buffalo and Rochester.

The word is spreading!

Events and festivals are still a significant reason why visitors travel to Ellicottville, while weddings and conferences draw a significant number of first-timers to town, giving us the opportunity to turn them into regulars.

In 2018, the Chamber hosted 19 events that continue to draw tens of thousands of visitors, with our second annual lacrosse festival continuing to grow.

Notable achievements in 2018 included the chamber’s partnership with Holiday Valley to open the “Chamber Sports Fields at Holiday Valley.” The area on 219 South next to Holiday Valley Real Estate/ Rental Management saw significant leveling and new turf funded by the chamber.

The new fields allowed our lacrosse festival to grow by 30 percent over 2017 with the potential for more growth in 2019.

This summer we will host a kids Lacrosse Adventure camp from July 29–31. Other events are being looked at as well as we believe there are significant opportunities for weekday youth sports activities at the fields.

We added a new festival in early 2018, Winter Music Jam. This event focused on the 16 musical acts that were playing a wide variety of music from classic rock to a 10-piece Irish band. The addition of this event brought more visitors into town on the weekend after Presidents weekend, which generally was slower than most. The Winter Music Jam sure changed that!

Summer Music Festival featuring Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx brought one of the most massive crowds ever to the event and Fall Festival went off

without a hitch.

Our staff worked hard to up the scale of vendors while cleanup crews from the Chamber, DPW and school left the village in immaculate condition the morning after the event. Leaf blowers cleaning every crack in the sidewalks and all commercial area streets washed clean.

Our advertising and marketing campaigns were able to reach thousands of potential visitors through radio, TV, social, print and public relations campaigns. We netted close to $150,000 in media during 2018.

The day-to-day operations of a busy office are extensive.

Attending to the needs of over 300 members, managing festivals, customer inquiries, producing creative concepts for media and managing our social sites.

A big thank you to Barbara Pump, our Media, Communications, and Events Manager and to Jessica Wallace, our Office Coordinator, for holding everything together at the front desk.

It is not always easy to measure success as the state does not release much financial information for our area, but in 2018 Ellicottville set a record for the most lodging revenue since 2004 when records began to be kept according to the County Treasurers office.

Lodging revenue increased by 7 percent over the previous record with Ellicottville having booked 53 percent of the overnight revenue countywide. Overall, collections countywide increased 18 percent, mainly because Airbnb began collecting and reporting our counties 5 percent occupancy tax.

Although planning is not complete for 2019, changes to Girls Getaway Weekend are being planned to attract an even more massive crowd in early June.

Summer Festival will see the Friday night party brought into the village.

Other events for the Chamber Sports fields are being evaluated as we look for more weekday programming.

The ECS Student Survival Guide

By Louisa Benatovich Student Reporter “It’s time to freak out, it’s time to panic!” Crystal Wilder urgently addresses her high school band.

Her tone is jovial, but her words are weighty. She gestures to the whiteboard. A two-digit number is written in faded Expo marker. The countdown has begun, less than three weeks until Armageddon is upon us.

Jan. 26: the dreaded day of the Cattaraugus County Music Teachers Association’s solo festival.

For student musicians and vocalists, it is a period of stress and anxiety. It is a time where nerves run wild and mistakes matter. In a closed room with only a judge, the soloist lays himself bare and vulnerable. For many, it’s too much to handle.

Thankfully, the Ellicottville Times is coming to the rescue.

With its team of experts, we will help you confront and overcome your performance fears, as well as impress the festival judges.

As long as you follow these five simple steps, you will play your way to success.

1. Practice There’s really nothing else to say. Practicing your solo and scales is the best way to prepare.

Let’s be real, few people start practicing more than four weeks before solo festival, but, folks, it is quality over quantity. Buzz in your mouthpiece, go over scales,

search for some sight reading, play for your mother and your overly-judgmental brother.

You must play until your lips hurt. It only makes them stronger. Practice until your solo is memorized. Practice until you despise your solo like the sound of your morning alarm. That’s how you know that you’re ready!

2. Mindset Part of being a musician is being able to play for audiences, but it isn’t what defines your musicianship. Ginna Hensel has been performing at festivals such as these for years, and she has perfected the performance mindset.

“I know what to expect, so I’m much more comfortable,” she says. “At the end of the day, it’s one person’s score and opinion.

If you worked hard on your solo, the comments and score shouldn’t matter.”

In this rank-heavy world, it’s sometimes difficult to wrangle the joy out of competition-oriented activities like this. If you practice this mentality as avidly as your scales, you can retrain your brain.

3. Focus “I don’t talk to anyone in the car on the way to solo fest,” says Megan Hartsell. “I need my mind to be a clean and clear wasteland where no stress can bloom. It also prepares my embouchure for playing time.”

In stressful situations, the human body fights or flies. At

solo festival, it is common to experience the “mind blank” or “brain flatulence.” You could know all of your scales by heart, but have them escape your memory by the time you sit down before the judge.

Instructing your mind to stay put, to not float away, is necessary. Skipping lines in solos, losing track of oneself in the midst of a song played countless times.

It happens, but you don’t have to let it.

4. Breathe Breathing is essential for human survival. And guess what, you need to breathe to play your instrument.

Take deep breaths before you enter the room. Breathe your way through the solo. (Not too breathy, though.) Breathe your way out of the room.

You’ll stay cool, calm, and collected. The judge will be impressed.

5. Practice There’s really nothing else to say. Practicing your solo and scales… Wait, didn’t we already say this?

By performing for this solo festival, students make themselves eligible to participate in Cattaraugus County All-County Ensembles held in March.

By Sam Wilson The new-look Ellicottville boys basketball team got its first taste of league play Friday night, and after a shaky start looked ready to compete for a fourth straight CCAA East II title this season.

The Eagles fell behind 9-0 in the game’s first four minutes to rival Franklinville and trailed by as much as 12 (19-7) in the first half. But Ellicottville would not allow the Panthers to break 25 points until the start of the fourth quarter, riding an 18-5 run into halftime and adding to it with a 21-0 third quarter. The flash of dominance gave Ellicottville more than enough to roll to a 51-35 victory.

Ellicottville switched out of its man-toman defense into a zone after two started picked up their second fouls in the first quarter, and coach Dave McCann credited better “team” play for his Eagles’ dramatic swing.

“In the first quarter we were forcing a lot of shots and I think really from the end of the first quarter, start of the second quarter, on, we really started playing better team basketball,” McCann said.

Ellicottville held a 38-26 rebounding advantage, led by sophomores Wyatt Chudy (12 boards) and sophomore Clayton Rowland (8) and senior Steven Rowland (11). Of those 38, 12 were offensive boards leading to extra scoring opportunities.

“They did a great job on the boards, both offensively and defensively: Wyatt with four offensive rebounds, Steven with five,” McCann said. “They just kept plays a live.

There were a couple times, especially in the fourth quarter, that Wyatt kept plays alive on shots we may have missed and drew a foul even one time. He played a heck of a ballgame.”

Chudy led the Eagles with 13 points, while the Rowland brothers both reached double figures (Clayton with 11, Steven with 10). Clayton Rowland added three assists and two steals.

Freshman Logan Grinols made a splash off the bench, draining three three-pointers, two of them in the pivotal second quarter before Ellicottville took a 25-24 advantage into the locker room.

“We had quite a few different guys score a lot of points,” McCann said. “We had some key contributions off the bench, Logan Grinols coming in and sticking a couple of shots in the second quarter really got us going. And that really picked up our energy level and once we picked up our energy level, I thought we were a lot different team.”

Grinols started the season on the junior varsity, but knew his number would eventually be called by the varsity squad.

“We had a talk at the beginning of the season, fully knowing that when it came down to this time of year, he'd be up with us,” McCann said. “I think he got a lot of

valuable experience down on the JV in the first half (of the season). He's a capable shooter and he plays hard and he plays smart. He's a good ballplayer.”

Freshman Josh Haskell led Franklinville (2-7) with 16 points, seven of them in the Panthers’ hot start in the first quarter.

The Eagles have won three straight Chautauqua-Cattaraugus East Div. II titles, sharing the last two as co-champion with Franklinville as both finished 9-1 in league play in both seasons. Both squads lost the overwhelming majority of their offensive production to the 2018 graduation of former Big 30 All-Stars like Franklinville’s Sam Erickson, Darren Clark and Isaac Kopp and Ellicottville’s Elliot Bowen and Griffin Chudy.

But with the comeback Friday night, McCann hopes his team of mostly sophomores and juniors gained some confidence entering another league campaign.

“They were pretty excited after the game,” McCann said. “It's been a backand-forth season. It seems like we win one, we lose one, we win one, we lose one, so now we're hoping we're getting to a point in our schedule where we can hopefully string a few wins together in a row.”

Also in ECS boys basketball action: Entering this week, the Ellicottville boys basketball team had followed a strict lose-win pattern through the first 10 games of the season.

It lost, won, lost, won, until its record sat at 5-5.

On Tuesday, it was finally able to put together its first winning streak of the year.

Leif Jimerson totaled 19 points and five assists as the Eagles held off Forestville for a 54-47 triumph in a CCAA East II matchup.

Steve Rowland posted 16 points and eight rebounds and Clayton added five boards and six steals for the Eagles (6-5), who have won two in a row following a 51-35 victory over Franklinville on Friday.

Ellicottville jumped out to a 15-8 lead and had a 27-15 advantage at halftime, but had to hang on after Forestville cut the deficit to one with two minutes remaining.

“We dug ourselves a hole in the first half,” Forestville coach Ralph Jackson acknowledged. “You can’t do that against a good team like Ellicottville.”

After the Panthers cut it to one, he noted, “Clayton Rowland hit a 3 from the wing to make it a four-point game and we turned the ball over twice in the next few minutes. We had to start fouling, and that was kind of it.”

Luke Szumigala had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets (5-4).

Cattaraugus County legislators hold reorganizational meeting

By Rick Miller Cattaraugus County lawmakers re-elected Olean Republican James J. Snyder as County Legislature chairman during a reorganization meeting Jan. 2.

Snyder was nominated by his son, Legislator Joseph Snyder, R-Ischua, who accidentally nominated himself to the laughter of his colleagues. Both legislators’ first names are James, but the younger Snyder goes by the first name of Joseph.

Republican Dan Hale of Portville was elected vice chairman. He succeeds Democrat Susan Labuhn of Salamanca, who for the past year was the first Democrat to hold the position.

Republicans control 12 of the 17 Legislature seats, but last year four Republicans joined the five minority Democrats in a bipartisan coalition to elect James Snyder chairman over Donna Vickman and Labuhn as vice chairman.

Under pressure from rank and file Republican Party members, County Republican Party Chairman Robert Keis Sr. met with GOP lawmakers in November to urge them to elect a Republican as vice chairman. That apparently worked.

Vickman, R-Farmersville, was re-elected majority leader, Howard VanRensselaer, R-Randolph, was named assistant majority leader and Joseph Boberg was named majority whip.

Democrats named Labuhn minority leader. David Koch, D-Salamanca, was named assistant minority leader and John Padlo, D-Olean, who served for the past year as majority leader, was named minority whip.

Legislative leaders echoed praise for department heads and County Administrator Jack Searles and his staff.

Labuhn said she called last year’s bipartisan coalition “common sense.” She added: “We still have obstacles.”

The biggest obstacle this year is that 2019 is an election year when all 17 seats are up for election.

Three legislators will be term-limited, meaning they have served three four-year terms and cannot run again for Legislature for at least a year: James Snyder, Vickman and Padlo.

Quigley named managing editor of Ellicottville Times

Kellen M. Quigley, a life-long resident of Cattaraugus County, was recently named managing editor of the Ellicottville Times.

Quigley, 25, a 2011 graduate of Salamanca High School and 2015 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, has been a writer with the Bradford Publishing Company since 2015.

A native of Salamanca, he has held a variety of reporting and editing responsibilities over the years, most recently as managing editor of The Salamanca Press.

In recent months, Quigley has been responsible for overseeing much of the editorial content in the

Ellicottville Times and Springville Times.

“I’m excited for this opportunity to further serve the Ellicottville area in this position,” he said. “We have a good team and we care about the people in the areas we serve. We want to continue providing you, our readers, with valuable content and information you should know.”

Quigley will continue to work in conjunction with the Olean Times Herald newsroom to develop and produce editorial content for all four publications.

The most controversial resolution of 54 legislators acted on at the reorganization meeting was one that grants the four elected county coroners health insurance benefits. The measure, which will cost more than $54,000 this year, had been raised two years ago and was turned down as publicly unpopular. Chairman Snyder and Vickman were sponsors.

Labuhn raised several questions and urged it be referred to committee. That motion lost on a voice vote.

The coroners could end up with health insurance for life if they serve 20 years, Personnel Officer Julie Carr said.

The county administrator said the long-term costs of the resolution had not been calculated.

The coroners are salaried and do not have set hours, Labuhn said. She didn’t know if they had opted into the New York State Retirement System.

On the 11-6 roll call vote, the following legislators voted yes: Robert Breton, R-Franklinville; Vergilio “Dick” Giardini, D-Allegany; Hale, Richard Helmich, R-Delevan; Frank Higgins, R-Olean; Richard Klancer, R-Gowanda;

Norman Marsh, R-Little Valley; Joseph Snyder, VanRensselaer, Vickman and James Snyder.

Voting no were: Boberg, Andrew Burr, R-Gowanda; Barbara Hastings, D-Allegany; Koch, Labuhn and Padlo.

Labuhn questioned after the vote whether VanRensselaer should have voted since his son Howie VanRensselaer is a county coroner. County Attorney Eric Firkel said later that since VanRensselaer had no financial interest in the issue it was proper for him to cast a vote.

Labuhn said VanRensselaer works for his son and had previously recused himself from voting on resolutions involving the coroners.

Democrats voted to change their official newspaper from the weekly Salamanca Press to the daily Olean Times Herald, which also serves as the official Republican newspaper.

DEC seeks comment on Cattaraugus Creek fisheries plan

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has released the draft of a management plan for Upper Cattaraugus Creek fisheries for public comment.

The draft plan provides a roadmap for fisheries management following the planned fish passage project at the Springville Dam. DEC is accepting public comments on the draft plan until Jan. 25.

“Cattaraugus Creek provides some of the most diverse trout fishing experiences in New York state,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “Lower Cattaraugus Creek is regarded as one of the premier destinations in North America for steelhead anglers, and upper Cattaraugus Creek provides excellent angling opportunities for resident rainbow and brown trout.

This plan seeks to enhance Cattaraugus Creek as a premier destination in Western New York for a year-round, high-quality sport fishery.”

The main stem of the lower reach of the Cattaraugus extends from the mouth at Lake Erie upstream 34 miles to Springville Dam. The upper reach extends another 34 miles to its source, and along with its numerous tributaries offers fishing for resident trout, abundant angler access and high-quality spawning and nursery habitat.

A long-planned fish passage project at Springville Dam will allow steelhead access to many miles of additional high-

quality habitat and provide new fishing opportunities, the DEC says. This passage project may also be accompanied by some changes to the existing upstream fisheries.

The Cattaraugus Creek watershed includes portions of five Western New York counties and the Seneca Nation of Indians territory. The entire watershed encompasses about 357,640 acres (more than 550 square miles) of western New York and includes many of the best stocked and wild trout streams in the region.

The main stem of Cattaraugus Creek flows west from its headwaters at Java Lake in Wyoming County for 65 miles, emptying into Lake Erie at Irving.

In the lowest reaches of Cattaraugus Creek near Lake Erie, warm water species including walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish and sucker species use this tributary as spawning and nursery habitat. At 34 miles above the creek’s mouth, Springville Dam is the

first barrier impassable to migratory fish from Lake Erie.

The dam has not generated electricity since 1998 and is currently maintained by Erie County as a recreational park. In 2017, a formal partnership agreement was signed between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the DEC and Erie County to design, engineer and construct a $7 million dam modification/fish passage project at this location.

Construction is projected to occur as early as 2020.

The dam fish passage plan calls for lowering the dam spillway from 40 feet to approximately 15 feet and constructing a fish passage channel and weir. The weir will allow seasonal passage of selected fish species while also maintaining a barrier to sea lamprey migration.

DEC notes the Cattaraugus is one of the most productive sea lamprey spawning and nursery areas in Lake Erie, and if the dam was altogether removed to address existing safety

issues, or if the fish passage weir was not selective, this entire system would become accessible to sea lamprey.

In their adult life phase, sea lamprey are highly parasitic and can kill up to 40 pounds of fish in a year. Maintaining a sea lamprey barrier is a critical element of this project and will allow the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC) and their sea lamprey control agents the ability to continue ongoing sea lamprey population control/assessment activities.

Our goal at the Ellicottville Times is to provide you with a large selection of local news, both reporting on what has happened in the past week as well as previewing what’s to come in the weeks ahead.

Although we are based in Ellicottville, our

coverage area looks at communities throughout Cattaraugus County, and our readers live and work in many of those communities.

By Rick Miller After 20 years without an increase in state reimbursement for Department of Motor Vehicle offices, Cattaraugus County Clerk Alan Bernstein thinks it’s time for a raise.

The New York State Association of County Clerks is asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state legislature to increase the percentage of reimbursement for county DMV transactions from 12.7 percent to 25 percent.

It is the group’s highest legislative priority this year.

Bernstein said the state gave a 0.7 percent increase from 12 percent in 1999. Since then, the state began internet service in 2011 that has further cut into revenues county clerks rely upon to run county DMV offices. The state has begun sharing 3.25 percent of internet transactions from each county — based on the increase in transactions since 2011.

“This year we received

about $22,000 for internet revenue from the state,” Bernstein said “There were a total of $675,000 in internet transactions from the county. If those had been walk-ins, we would have received more than $80,000 in revenue.”

Bernstein said that not including December, the county DMV received about $670,000 in reimbursement in 2018, “but our expenses are closer to $1 million.”

Since 2015, Bernstein estimates the county DMV shortfall to be about $1.2 million.

He added having three locations — Little Valley, Olean and Delevan — is necessary to cover the geographically-large county.

“I beg people all the time to come to the offices,” he said, instead of renewing their license or registration through the state, online or by mail. “People deserve to come in and walk out with what they need in a timely fashion. It’s a public service.”

He added his staff has taken to thanking customers by mail for coming into a DMV office.

The county DMV offices are now providing additional services including enhanced driver’s licenses and processing the federal government’s new Real ID requirements, Bernstein said.

Next October, federal regulations will require the federal Real ID or passports for boarding an airplane — including domestic flights. These require additional documents that must be scanned by DMV clerks.

The Real ID and enhanced driver’s licenses require the same proofs of identification, like a marriage certificate, original birth certificate and Social Security card. But New York’s enhanced driver’s license costs $30 more and allows a person to travel by car or boat between Mexico, Canada and some Caribbean nations without needing a passport.

The difficulty for DMV staff has been in explaining to frustrated customers that they need to prove their identities again and return with documents — even though they’ve had a driver’s license for decades. The staff then have to scan in all the records while the customer waits.

Legislation to increase the state’s share of county DMV costs has only been approved in years past by a Republican-controlled state Senate. And now the entire Legislature is Democrat-controlled.

“We’re a united front on this,” Bernstein said of his fellow county clerks. “We’re not looking to make money on this. We want to break even though.”

Ellicottville fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis raises $4,200

It almost seemed as if it was a Fall Fest night in Madigan’s in Ellicottville last Saturday.

The upstairs bar was filled end to end with people showing their support for Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disorder that attacks the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body leading to

premature death.

The event included basket raffles, 50/50 drawing, complimentary food, beverages, DJ Tanner and a 30-minute total body workout.

The event was a huge success, raising $4,200 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in just two hours. All of the proceeds go towards finding a cure and better medications to help those with the

disease live longer lives.

The support from the community was just amazing. The second annual fundraising event will be even bigger and better.

A huge thank you needs to go out to everyone who showed up for the event, everyone who donated baskets, everyone who helped put this thing together, everyone who did the workout, everyone

who donated, DJ Tanner, Tim and Bonnies Pizza and Madigan’s, who did an incredible job hosting the event.

It was a well-organized, fun-filled event that got us that much closer to a cure.

Looking forward to next year’s event and the day we get to say CF has been cured. Thank you all again!

By Deb Everts After 35 years in the music business, rock icon Bret Michaels is still going strong and pleasing three generations of fans.

Michaels is bringing his solo tour, “Bret Michaels Songs & Stories World Tour,” to the Seneca Allegany Events Center Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

According to Loudwire, Poison’s “Nothin’ But a Good Time” tour came to a close last July. He launched his online series, “Classic Acoustic Songs and Stories Live From Bret Michaels’ House,” this past fall.

A talented musician, singer, songwriter and author, Michaels is best known as the frontman of the 1980s “big hair” metal rock band Poison and as the star of the former reality television show “Rock of Love.”

According to Spotify, Michaels rose to fame as the outlandish frontman of the rock band, Poison, and helped define the rock-n-roll scene on the Sunset Strip, in California. The ‘80s glam metal band has been hugely successful selling over 30 million records worldwide and numerous hit singles.

Michaels’ solo career has been equally successful as he has released and sold multiple solo albums including “Custom Built,” released in 2010, that topped the charts and became No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock list.

His CD, “Jammin’ With Friends,” released in June 2013, featured a large group of legendary artists and friends of his including Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Loretta Lynn, Jimmy Buffett, Ace Frehley (Kiss), Michael Anthony (Van Halen) and members of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

His follow up album, “True Grit,” featured the single, “Girls on Bars” and “A Beautiful Soul.” He released the single, “Jorja Bleu,” in 2017, which was penned for and named after his youngest daughter who was going through a tough moment in her life.

According to Butler Radio, Michaels was born Bret Michael Sychak in Butler, Pa., and grew up in the suburb Lyndora. His musical career began as a teenager when he started playing the guitar and started a band with his friends.

They performed at numerous venues in Pennsylvania under the name, “Paris,” before moving to Los Angeles in early 1984.

The group renamed their band “Poison” and signed a deal with Enigma Records, releasing their first album, “Look What the Cat Dragged In,” in August 1986.

The band’s power ballad, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” released in December 1988, came to be regarded as “the ultimate

‘80s anthem about heartbreak.”

In the ‘80s and early ‘90s, Poison emerged as one of the greatest glam metal bands in the world. According to Billboard magazine, the group sold more than 40 million records worldwide.

The band’s Top 10 songs are “Talk Dirty to Me,” “Look What the Cat Dragged In,” “What I Like About You,” “Something to Believe In,” “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “Your Mama Don’t Dance,” “Fallen Angel,” “I Won’t Forget You,” “Nothin’ but a Good Time” and “SexyBack.”

Since 1998, Michaels has divided his time between the band and his career as a solo artist. He wrote, directed, scored and starred in the 1998 thriller, “A Letter From Death Row” that was co-produced by Charlie Sheen, who formed a production company with Michaels in the mid-‘90s.

Michaels has released studio albums, “Songs of Life” (2003), “Freedom of Sound” (2005), “Custom Built” (2010), and “Jammin’ with Friends” (2013); compilation albums “Show Me Your Hits” (2000), “Ballads, Blues & Stories” (2001), “Rock My World” (2008), and “True Grit” (2015); and extended plays “Country Demos” (2000) and “Bret Michaels: Acoustic Sessions”(2008).

In addition to his musical career, he starred in the reality TV series, “Rock of Love with Bret Michaels,” which aired between July 2007 and April 2009. Other TV appearances include “Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It,” a reality show on VH1 that focused on his home life with his daughters and their mother, and “The Celebrity Apprentice 3.”

Michaels just completed the second year of his sold-out “Party Starts Now” solo tour, which has brought record-breaking numbers to outdoor festivals and arenas, according to Digital Journal.

Michaels’ new song, “Unbroken,” features his 13-year old daughter, Jorja, in her first musical performance with her father. Not only does she sing and perform on the track with him, but the father/ daughter duo also co-wrote the song about adversity together. The single is expected to be released in January or February.

At age six, Michaels was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and has become a passionate supporter of research on diabetes and a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association.

In an interview with Digital Journal, Michaels said his “Life Rocks Foundation,” is a unique dollar-in, dollarout foundation that gives back to multiple causes including diabetes research, wounded soldiers and animals in need (pet shelters).

Verizon proposes micro cell towers in Ellicottville

By Caitlin Croft The January meeting of the Village Planning Board opened with discussion regarding 3 Washington St., the old M&T Bank. There was an error in notifications and two landowners within 200 feet were not informed of the Public Hearing.

After discussing with the village attorney, it was decided they should postpone the hearing until February and renotify all landowners within 200 feet. The planning board apologized to the owner and asked for them to call the Code Enforcement Officer to see what work could be done before approval, for example, some interior demolition.

There was a motion to set the public hearing for Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

Next, there was a public hearing on 74 Elizabeth St. This is an application for a single family home in addition to a demolition permit.

The demolition permit cannot be issued without an approved site plan and architectural review.

The current owner has intentions of selling the lot as a building lot after demolition. If the landowner or the future landowner wants to change anything to the plans they must come back to the planning board. This is a Type 2 Action under the State Environmental Quality Review.

There were no written or electronic comments

received on the project and no members of the public were in attendance to speak.

Under old business, concerning 74 Elizabeth St., the board accepted the negative declaration under SEQR. The board also approved the site plan review and architectural design review with one condition, the home to be built must follow the Section 10 guidelines and pre-1950 construction, for the aesthetic and continuity of the street to remain intact.

By obtaining the SPR and ADR the Code Enforcement Officer may now issue a demolition permit.

Under new business, Verizon Wireless was in attendance to present on four proposed Micro Cell Towers. A total of eight are looking to be constructed in the area with four being in the town of Ellicottville.

The town has already moved that this was a complete application and a public hearing will be held this month.

The four locations are as follows: at Elizabeth and Mechanic, at Adams and Route 242, at Mill and Washington and lastly at Madison and Martha (Edelweiss).

The Village Zoning Board of Appeals also was in attendance and held their meeting concurrently.

These will be 12-inchby-24-inch antennas fixed to the top of either an existing building or National Grid utility

pole. There will also be a radio box along with new electric meter added to monitor the unit.

There were concerns on how far off the ground radio box would be. There was some discussion as to why the locations were chosen the way they were. The engineer advised that once you start moving one tower a couple hundred feet it will change where the other towers need to be. They cannot be too close to each other.

Verizon Engineers looked at where the majority of the increased bandwidth is coming from. Turns out it is the residential homes that are streaming and downloading.

With increased use during peak season and weekends, such as Fall Fest, there will no longer be a need for extra towers to be brought in.

These micro cell towers will alleviate all traffic in their 500-foot radius and will allow better service to those who are connecting still to the main macro tower.

This application was deemed a complete application.

A joint public hearing with the Village Planning and ZBA was set for Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m.; a second and ayes carried.

The next regular meeting will be held on Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.

Visit the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster near the Tannenbaum Lodge and get ready for a thrilling ride down through the snowy woods.

The Mountain Coaster is similar to a roller coaster but it is low to the ground and follows the contours of the terrain. You ride alone or with a friend in a “car” attached to rails that pulls you up the hill, then it follows a zigzagging spiraling path down the mountain. You can control the speed of your car with levers on the sides of the car.

Children must be at least 3 years old and over 38 inches tall (without shoes) to ride with an adult, or 8 years and 54 inches tall to ride alone. The driver of a two-person car must be at least 16 years old. Riders must be able to perform specific physical tasks to participate.

The Coaster operates during the winter season from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, and also on Monday, Jan. 21.

With so many ways to enjoy the first month of the new year outdoors, January 2019 will be one to remember.

Riders participating in the free event should meet at the Red House Administration Building at 6 p.m. to check in at the main lobby, although registration is not required. The ride will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“Recently, we have been exploring new recreation programming ideas here at Allegany State Park,” said Assistant Regional Director Thomas Livak.

Because bike availability is limited, anyone interested in demoing a fat bike for the evening must call ahead at 354-9101, ext. 232. Participants should bring their fat bike, warm clothes, headlights and a sense of adventure. If there is no snow, any bike is welcome.

Environmental Educator Adele Wellman said with the growing popularity of fat bikes, the recreation department wanted to give patrons another way to enjoy winter. She said the 5-mile fun ride is for all levels and will last up to two hours, depending on the weather.

According to Wellman, riders will take a winding course through the Red House Campgrounds, around the lake out to the Butterfly Meadow and into the woods. The leisurely ride in the moonlight will eventually end by the warm fires in Red House Picnic Shelter.

A recent press release from the park’s recreation department said fat bikes are the monster trucks of the bike world. With big tires, typically 3.8-inches (97 mm) or wider, they are designed for low pressure to allow riding on soft, unstable terrain, such as snow, sand, bogs and mud.

“Sports like snowshoeing and fat bike riding have grown in popularity in Western New York and we are looking for new ways to help patrons engage in activities while learning and enjoying their experience at the park,” Livak said.

They have been around since the early 1900s, but it wasn’t until frame builders, in both Alaska and Mexico, began experimenting with different frames, parts and tire widths in the 1990s that “Fat Bikes” were born.

According to Bicycling magazine, fat bikes make quick work of people’s fitness goals because they make outdoor exercise possible and the workouts are tough. On a fat bike, a person can burn up to 1,500 calories an hour in soft conditions. They’ll also recover faster than if they went for an hour-long run.

“The park is also offering summer programming in popular sporting activities such as paddle boarding, kayaking and mountain biking,” Livak added.

More bike rides are planned to be offered on Monday nights at 5:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 28.
