Ellicottville Chamber looks back on events of 2018, ahead to 2019

The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce had a successful lineup of mostly free events in 2018 and is expecting another exciting year of events in 2019.

Looking back on the events of 2018, Events Manager Barb Pump said all the events were well-attended. The chamber staff feels that they are attracting more people from the surrounding areas to Ellicottville’s events, she said.

VOLUNTEERS, CLUB ORGANIZERS KEEP MANY MILES OF SNOWMOBILE TRAILS OPEN

By Rick Miller When you are out on snowmobile trails in Cattaraugus County this winter, remember for a minute the volunteers who help maintain them.

For many years, Cathy Hill of Cattaraugus has served as county snowmobile trail coordinator. It consists of a lot of paperwork.

This season, after 25 years with the Cattaraugus County Snowmobile Federation, she’s backed off from that role. This summer she did a lot of paperwork and helped other volunteers with a lot of trail work. Not all the

By Jeffrey Reed Have you seen any evening grosbeaks yet? If the answer is no, you’re not alone, but don’t give up hope because readers have been reporting them at their feeders and as we get deeper into the winter, we may see more of these birds irrupting from their nesting grounds in Canada.

Rob Mrowka had evening grosbeaks at his feeder as early as Nov. 22 and has had them at least twice since then while Mike Ermer from Allegany County saw evening grosbeaks eating gravel along the side of the road near the Eshelman Tract of the Pfeiffer Nature Center and there was also a report of a single female evening grosbeak at the Van Scoy’s feeder in Limestone.

Gravel is an essential part of a seed eating bird’s digestive process so it’s not unusual to see birds along the side of the road at this time of the year eating gravel and from what I can gather, the grosbeaks at feeders have been eating black oil sunflower seeds so if that’s what you’re using, keep an eye out.

For my part, I had hoped to see evening grosbeaks or common redpolls on my patch during the Audubon Christmas Count that was held Dec. 16, but I came up empty even though I was outdoors for six of the eight hours that I was counting. And even though I ended the day with 23 species of birds which exceeded my goal of 20, I agreed with the other counters when we got together for dinner that this was the slowest year in recent memory with some people getting fewer than 10 species.

It’s important to note that there’s more publicly accessible land on my patch than the others, which means I can spend most of my day walking while other people have to spend their day driving and birding from the roadside and since I have

both the Olean Creek and the Allegheny River in my area I can usually hit my mark of twenty species as long as there’s no ice on the river.

Before getting to the birds that I saw or heard, it’s worth noting the birds I did not see (almost). The week before the count I saw over 200 Canada geese on the Olean Creek but the day of the count I couldn’t find a single one until the last hour of the count when, in desperation, I checked the Olean Creek behind the Olean Times Herald building and found on the dike a single goose, which I probably would have missed if it hadn’t been honking.

Also missing were house sparrows, which are the squeaky little urban birds that can generally be found almost anywhere in the city without too much effort, but this year I didn’t see a single one.

Tim Baird, who covers the village of Allegany in his section reported that he didn’t have any European starlings, which are generally as common as house sparrows, if not more so.

What struck me as I walked through the fields and woodlots near the dikes was the absence of any fruit on the honeysuckle, autumn olive and multiflora rose bushes that seem to be growing everywhere. No fruit means no food and that means no birds. Mike Ermer noticed the same thing with thornapple trees, which seemed to produce much less fruit this year than in past years, so it might be that there are just fewer overwintering birds this year.

In fact, were it not for a single bird feeder near Gargoyle Park, where I picked up red-bellied woodpecker, American goldfinch, white-throated sparrow and dark-eyed junco, I’m not sure I would have been able to make my goal.

But with no ice on the Allegheny River or the Olean Creek, I added mallard, bufflehead, common goldeneye, common merganser, hooded merganser, piedbilled grebe and belted kingfisher. I usually get bald eagle along the river but I didn’t see one this year, even though other counters did.

My most exciting bird of the day came as I was driving on North Barry Street on my way to meet the rest of the counters for dinner when I noticed a bird at the top of a tree along the dikes. Between the overcast skies and the coming darkness, I had to walk right up to the tree before realizing that it was a merlin.

This is the second time that I’ve had merlin on the Christmas Count and both birds were in the same general area, which is close to where a pair successfully nested in 2010. Although I have no proof, it may be that the merlins are part of the reason we’re seeing fewer house sparrows and European starlings since merlins are formidable predators, using incredible bursts of speed to overtake anything with wings the size of a pigeon or smaller.

The merlin was also in the same general area where I had seen an immature red-shouldered hawk earlier in the day, and even though both birds target different types of prey, merlins are regarded as particularly badtempered towards other hawks so the drama would have been worth the price of admission if hostilities had broken out.

When all was said and done, the 12 people counting in the 69th St. Bonaventure Audubon Christmas Count tallied 38 species of birds, which is well below our typical 45 to 50 species. Still, it was nice to be outdoors and it’s fun to hear what other people were seeing in their sections.

‘Exercise for Cystic Fibrosis’ to support worthy cause Jan. 5

By Deb Everts Local fitness trainer Bradley Poole invites the public to come out and support a worthy cause at his “Exercise for Cystic Fibrosis” fundraising event Saturday, Jan. 5, upstairs at Madigan’s at 4 p.m.

Poole will lead attendees in a 30-minute cardio blast workout, which is a total body workout combining cardio, strength and agility movements. He said these movements keep the heart rate elevated, burn fat and make the person working out sweat.

“Attendees are not required to participate in the workout. They can just come, support, watch, hang out and have fun,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun event for a great cause.”

Poole said everybody can do the workout because it’s designed for all fitness levels and body weights. He said if someone can’t do the regular version, they don’t have to worry because he will show them some modifications.

In addition to the cardio workout, the event will also feature basket raffles, a DJ, food and beverages. Beverages are not covered by entrance fee.

“Just to make it more fun, feel free to dress in costume for the workout,” he said.

“I will be leading the workout as Richard Simmons, so throw in some ‘80s gear or other fun stuff. If you don’t want to dress up, don’t sweat it.”

Poole, of Salamanca, said he is doing this benefit all on his own because he was born with cystic fibrosis (CF), which is an inherited life-threatening disorder that damages the lungs and digestive system.

He said this event will not only help raise funds to find a cure, but it will also bring awareness to the locals about the disease.

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs.

Poole said he has a defective gene in his body that causes thick mucus to build up in his lungs. He said that mucus sits in the lungs and ends up colonizing bacteria, so

anyone with CF gets these lung infections all the time.

“I have MRSA and Pseudomonas in my lungs that just stay there all the time,” he said. “Over time, it eats away at the lungs and scars the lung tissue.”

Some may wonder how a person living with this disease can be a fitness trainer, such as Poole. His goal is to improve through exercise and he does it religiously.

He said having the disease influenced him to pursue a career in fitness to help himself stay healthy.

“I’ve seen how much exercise has helped me, so I wanted to be able to reach out and help other people live healthier lifestyles,” he said.

Poole, who has his own business, Bradley Poole Health & Fitness, is an independent contractor and trains people at Core Performance Fitness in Ellicottville.

He is not only an International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Certified Personal Trainer, but he is also certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Most recently, Poole became certified as a Sport’s Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting (USAW). He holds two bachelor degrees – one in Sports and Recreational Management, the other in Exercise Science — and a masters in Sports Administration.

signs have been put out on the trails yet this year.

“There was a lot of rain this summer,” she said. “We had some bridges wash out. It was a tough summer.”

Hill said some of the Snow-Bounders club secondary trails may close this year because they don’t have enough manpower to maintain them.

Up to 7 miles of trail could close this season.

That still leaves 85 miles of trails, down from 110 miles only a few years ago, Hill said.

“It’s not going to affect how you get from point A to point B,” she said, “but some people won’t be able to access the main trail near their homes.”

Hill said she’s checked with other clubs and it’s the same everywhere.

“We have the same volunteer base. The younger generation thinks it’s something that happens on its own.

Nobody wants to do volunteer work.”

“We’ve probably lost 50 percent of our volunteer base who have retired,” she added. “The

most difficult part is not being able to get out on the trails until after deer season.”

Club membership is about the same as in past years, Hill said.

Members get a reduced price on their state snowmobile registration.

“It’s been a tough couple of years,” Hill said. “Every time it would snow, it would melt. There was no base.

You couldn’t groom.”

Club members dream of too much snow to groom.

The trails opened on Dec. 19, but fluctuating temperatures and light snowshowers have made snowmobiling scarce.

There are more than 400 miles of snowmobile trails throughout Cattaraugus County, plus another 75 miles in Allegany State Park.

That makes this region a snowmobile destination location.

“When I was younger, you just rode in your own little circles, you didn’t ride from town to town like you do now,” Hill said.

Some trails still need to be signed, she said.

You can’t do that during

deer season either — or before a cornfield has been harvested. Some sign crews may still be placing signs on trails at the last minute.

Just because the trails opened on Dec. 19 doesn’t mean there was enough snow to groom them, Hill warned. Her husband, Tom, drives one of four groomers the Snow-Bounders own and maintain using state snowmobile grants.

“I’d like to see a decent winter,” Hill said.

“Snowmobiling is a costly family sport. The sleds can cost $6,000 to $15,000. The registration is $45 if you belong to a club. Then there’s clothing. Then if it’s a lousy winter and you only get out two or three times.

“It’s nice to drive around in the winter and see 12 to 15 snowmobiles parked outside each location,” she continued. “It’s a boost for the economy.

Many restaurants say if it wasn’t for snowmobile season, they wouldn’t stay open. I’d like to see a couple of nice seasons.”

By Christian Gravius The last time Salamanca took home a tournament victory on this stage, the majority of the Warriors roster wasn’t even born yet.

Formerly named the Cattaraugus County IAABO Holiday Tournament, the Warriors took home first place honors for the first time since 2000 on Sunday afternoon, defeating Ellicottville 48-43 at St. Bonaventure’s Reilly Center in the Joe DeCerbo Memorial Tournament championship in the Pat Carroll Bracket.

Considering the Warriors are off to a hot 6-1 start, dropping a single game in an overtime heartbreaker to Franklinville, one would assume Sunday’s contest wouldn’t have been a close one against a young Ellicottville (4-4) team.

The box score, however, will show a fairly even matchup. With the Warriors leading at most by three points at the end of each quarter, Warriors coach Adam Bennett wasn’t particularly fond of his team’s performance.

“It wasn’t pretty,” he said.

Regardless, though, his team found a way to win.

“I told the team in the locker room, ‘good teams find a way’. And we found a way tonight,” he said. “If you want to be good over the course of a season you have to be able to win the pretty ones and the ugly ones.”

Perhaps the prettiest part of the Warriors’ win lied in Isaac Brown’s performance.

Brown led Salamanca with 20 points and five rebounds, laying down 12 of his points from deep while leading the team’s defense to earn tournament MVP honors in the process.

Up by five with under a minute left on the clock, that’s exactly where Salamanca would stay as it inched away with the

victory when the Eagles began intentionally fouling the Warriors, marking what would end game’s evenness.

“It feels great,” said Ellicottville head coach Adam Bennett on his team taking home the program’s first tournament championship in 18 years.

After Saturday’s win, Bennett noted the heart his team displays in each game, which he says as given his team an advantage so far this season. When Ellicottville looked like it was ready to take the game over and found a lead in the final frame, Salamanca’s heart was on full display.

“There were a couple times in the fourth quarter where we could’ve easily folded and we pulled away,” Bennet said.

Out-rebounding the Warriors 48-23, Bennett said the Eagles killed his team on the boards.

“It wasn’t a lack of effort on our part, but they played really hard,” he said. “You have to give Dave (McCann) credit, that’s a really young team and they gave us all we could handle.”

Steven Rowland came up big for the Eagles, grabbing 14 rebounds and chipping in 18 points to lead Ellicottville, and while he only tallied even points of his own, Wyatt Chudy proved to be a force at the net grabbing 10 boards of his own. Leif Jimerson added 11 points.

Moving forward, it looks like Bennett and the Warriors are right where they want to be. Ending non-league play, the Warriors head into January without a single loss in regulation and their best record in December since 2016.

“Everything that we do in non-league play is to prepare us for league play,” Bennett said. “This tournament is a great barometer for what our league is like and gave us a good idea of where we’re at and where we need to be.”

Ellicottville 60, Portville 49 The first boys matchup of the 2018 Joe DeCerbo Memorial Tournament at St. Bonaventure’s Reilly Center between Portville and Ellicottville looked like identical twins playing against each other.

Both teams don maroon and white school colors, both schools’ names end in the “ville” suffix and coming into Saturday’s game, both teams had same number of wins (3).

With so many similarities between the two teams, one would assume it’d only makes sense their final scores would also be similar.

Well, that wasn’t the case, and the Eagles soared past Portville 60-49.

Backed by sophomore Leif Jimerson with 18 points, four assists and three steals, the Eagles gained a six-point lead on the Panthers headed into the half and would only continue to extend it from there.

Coming out of the locker room to begin the second half, the Eagles defensive efforts overpowered the Panthers.

With 14 points of its own in the third

quarter, Ellicottville held Portville to a mere six in the same frame.

On the defensive end, Steven Rowland lead Ellicottville with 13 rebounds, three steals and six blocks.

Had it not been for a slow start to the second half, though, the Panthers very well may have been able to keep up with, or even pass, Ellicottville.

Led by Zayne Tarr with 16 points and 6 rebounds and Dalton Tobola with five points, seven rebounds and six steals, the Panthers kept themselves in the game up until the buzzer, but its third quarter deficit proved to be a hole too deep for the Panthers to claw themselves out of.

“The guys played a solid game overall,” said McCann on his Eagles team made up of primarily juniors.

“When we’re this young, there’s going to be ups and downs,” added McCann.

“But today I told them we took a big step in the right direction. We have our moments and I still don’t think we’ve played a full 32-minute game yet, but they have potential and I hope they saw that today.”

ECS students make their New Year’s resolutions

The New Year is always a big time for students.

“This year, I’ll do my homework,” they say.

“This year, I won’t fail a class.” “This year, I swear, I’ll actually try.”

These self-promises come in all forms, some a small whisper in the night and others a consolidated effort, written on paper and push-pinned to the wall.

Aside from my inability to pronounce “resolutions,” I’ve always enjoyed the thought of a clean slate, the chance to start anew.

Personally, the New Year brings a pastelcolored calendar and a new lease on life. I can truly reinvent myself…at least for the first week. When I set my mind to something, I can jump right in, no holds barred.

For others, however, resolutions are just a waste of time.

“I think it’s good to set goals,” said Jalee Evans, a sophomore, “but you’re almost setting yourself up for failure by starting with the New Year.”

Jalee said if someone sincerely wanted to and was going to put forth the effort for that goal, they don’t need a new year to start that.

“My father says he will quit tobacco, but he also says that every other week,” she said. “People think that their new year resolution has to be something big like that.”

It would be smarter, Jalee thinks, to have a new year’s resolution that begins with having four drinks this week, and then in the next month make it three.

“People jump right in with these big

expectations, which is pretty much setting yourself up for failure,” she continued. “My goal this year is to do a split and some crazy yoga poses. I can get there with mini goals and maintain it.”

Lindsay Swalcy, also a sophomore, agrees.

“I think resolutions have good intentions,” she said, “but they really don’t mean much unless you’re very determined to accomplish them.”

While some choose microgoals and others choose to jump right in, some Ellicottville students use the New Year as an opportunity for introspection and selfevaluation.

“I don’t set resolutions really,” says Ginna Hensel, a senior, “but I look back and reflect and figure out what I can do better.”

are challenging habits to alter because these patterns of behavior have been built up over many years.

Instead, it’s much better to try and replace the bad habit with a better one. Rather than suppressing a snacking habit, for example, it’s better to make the snack food healthier: switch from candy to apples.

If you find yourself slipping, here’s a tip for quickly boosting selfcontrol. Try thinking about your core values, something you really care about. It could be your partner, your family or a higher ideal. Studies have found this can help boost your self-control in

a moment of weakness.

Finally, one of the most important messages emerging from the research is that breaking old habits is hard. The temptation is to bite off more than you can chew, but baby steps are likely to work better.

Try to start with minor bad habits or only part of your bad habit. For example, it may not be possible to tackle unhealthy eating all in one go, but you can, at least, change what you habitually eat for breakfast.

With this change under your belt, you can layer another good habit on top, and then another. For big changes, think small.

HEALTH & FITNESS: STICKING TO YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

By Kim Duke This past Tuesday, New Years Day, I spent my morning cleaning up the holiday mess and then settled in to binge watch TV.

Of course, no matter what station I was watching, every commercial was geared toward weight loss and fitness.

Nutri-system and Weight Watchers now have new and improved ways of losing weight without giving up your favorite indulgences.

Fitness equipment is now so amazing that all you need is 14 minutes a session and you will lose fat and get ripped by using this cardio stepper machine.

And, of course, every spokesperson was fit, good-looking and young.

I have known too many folks who have bought into this fantasy only to

be sadly disappointed by the actual amount of work that needs to go into getting their fitness and health back on track.

So disappointed, they quit altogether.

Yes, it’s a new year!

Time to make the resolutions, wipe the slate clean and start fresh.

Dave Zinczenko, editor of Men’s Health, equates making a New Year’s resolution to hitting your thumb with a hammer.

“First you make a big, loud show, get all angry and determined and take bold action,” he said.

“The urgency begins to fade. Within a week or so, you have only a nagging reminder around

By Deb Everts Lack of snow and lots of mud didn’t stop the fun at “WinterCamp 2018” where children had the opportunity to experience a threeday, overnight camping excursion at Camp Turner.

Held in the Quaker area of Allegany State Park, this year’s camping event ran Dec. 28–30.

Camp Director John Mann said although the lack of snow prevented the kids from sledding and snowshoeing, they run a summer camp as well, so they have plenty of games and activities to do when it isn’t snowing.

He said the staff is welltrained and committed to helping campers have a great time.

Mann said there are nature hikes where the kids track deer and they learn outdoor living skills including outdoor survival skills, fire building and how to make a campsite. Gamesin-the-Woods is a “hide and seek” type game played in the woods.

“We also have a lot of sports activities going on,” he said. “When the kids go outside, they play dodgeball, pickleball, ‘9-Square-in-theAir,’ volleyball, basketball and court hockey.”

Program Director Jake Overfield said they adapt according to the weather. He said one year, they started on a Friday with mild temperatures and mud — just like this past weekend — and they woke up Saturday to about four feet of snow on the ground.

Mann said the camp is not only fun, but they try to make it educational as well. He said WinterCamp is a little bit more laid back compared to the summer program, but it’s still wellstructured and supervised.

It’s only three days and they try to gear it more toward the younger campers to give them a little taste of summer camp.

“We want to help kids discover the presence of God in each other, in the staff and in nature,” he said.

According to Overfield, the camp capacity is 80 kids and, this year, 69 came for WinterCamp. He said the kids, ranging from ages 7 to 14, come from

all over Western New York including Dunkirk, Olean, Bradford, Springville, Tonawanda, Orchard Park, Lancaster and other Buffalo areas as well as nearby Ellicottville, Great Valley and Salamanca.

Originally from North Tonawanda, Mann and his wife, Sheryl Soborowski who is also a staff member, live in Great Valley. Mann has been Camp Director for 16 years, since 2003, after several summers as a camp counselor between 1983 and 1992.

Mann said the camp has excellent staff retention — around 75-percent from year-to-year. He said it’s 100-percent at each WinterCamp, so they take no new staff for the winter session.

“It’s only people who have been here with me for one or more summers,” he said. “They’ve been through all of our staff training including first aid courses with CPR, behavioral management, safe environment training and risk management, so everybody here knows what they are doing.”

Overfield, who resides in Orchard Park, said this past summer and this winter camp is his seventh year.

“I was a camper here for five years, then I got involved because I loved the place, the atmosphere and the nature aspect,” he said.

This summer marked 19 years at Camp Turner for Kathy Weiss, dining room manager, who said she started working at the camp in 1978 as a counselor and also did the nature woods program.

Mann said it’s a real pleasure to have Weiss onboard. He said she’s a certified archery instructor and she knows quite a bit about nature.

“She either runs our

nature program or trains other staff to do it. Through her, they know all about plant and tree identification, as well as animal tracking,” he said.

Camp Counselor Catie Dwyer comes from Washingtonville, which is about an hour north of New York City. She said her uncles and mother who grew up in Buffalo influenced her to come to Camp Turner.

Her uncles worked there and her mother attended Camp Maryglen in East Eden, which was a girl’s resident camp similar to Camp Turner. She said this was before the two combined and Camp Turner became a resident camp for both boys and girls.

Dwyer said she started at Camp Turner as a camper when she was six years old and, now, she’s 17.

She’s been a counselor for two summers and this is her second winter as a counselor.

“As a camper, I loved all the games and it was so much fun,” she said.

“I just love it here and I can’t imagine not coming here. I love the kids. I like the environment and how friendly everyone is. I always want to come back.”

Beginning with Camp Turner’s SummerCamp, the Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo has operated the not-for-profit camp since 1923. WinterCamp started about 2004 and is open to all children regardless of religious affiliation, race or gender.

The man shot following a downtown Ellicottville bar fight nearly a month ago is now in fair condition.

Staff at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo reported Dec. 27 that 41-year-old Brandon Janesz is in fair condition and, while still at the hospital, is no longer in the trauma intensive care unit.

Janesz was in critical condition in the ICU for at least the first 12 days after he was shot in the abdomen area on the night of Dec. 1 by Damien M. Marvin, 25, of Salamanca. Marvin fired the single round with a legally possessed Glock handgun after he, Janesz and Janesz’s brother were thrown out of the Villaggio bar and restaurant for fighting.

Marvin, who is charged with first-degree assault, a class B felony, was released from Cattaraugus County Jail on $25,000 bond more than two weeks ago.

Rieman has said that her office will likely wait until after Jan. 1 to present Marvin’s case before a grand jury for indictment.

Both Marvin, in statements to New York State Police shortly after his arrest, and Marvin’s attorney, Cattaraugus County Assistant Public Defender Ben Smith, have claimed Marvin shot Janesz in self-defense.

According to Marvin, he was assaulted by Janesz and Janesz’s brother both at Villaggio and again out in the street after the three were escorted from Villaggio.

At Marvin’s preliminary felony hearing Dec. 4, Villaggio General Manager Spencer Murray testified that Marvin walked away toward the corner of Washington and Monroe streets, but Janesz’s brother charged toward Marvin, causing Janesz to follow.

“I saw both brothers push the defendant down to the ground from behind, and then I saw Janesz fall into a snow bank, and at that point I

saw the defendant pull a gun out of his hip and shoot (Janesz),” Murray testified.

Marvin told state police that, after he got pushed to the ground, he got up, pulled out his gun while walking backward into the road and gave three verbal commands of “stop, I have a pistol.”

Marvin said Janesz “kept coming at me” so he shot him. Marvin then dropped the gun and put his hands in the air. State police arrived shortly after and took him into custody.

New York is not a “Stand Your Ground” law state. In order to use deadly physical force in self-defense, New Yorkers are required to first try to retreat from the threatening situation.

According to Cattaraugus County property records, Janesz owns a townhouse part of the Wildflower Apartments in Ellicottville, which he purchased in 2015.

However, property records also state that Janesz’s home address is located in Orchard Park in Erie County.

Their most popular event is “Fall Festival,” Pump said, Ellicottville’s oldest and largest event in the village that always brings thousands of people to town. She said their other events are also bringing more visitors into the village.

“We are always looking for ways to make our events even better than what they were the year before, and we will try to do the same this year,” she said. “We may or may not add a new event this year because we never know what the new year will bring us and what opportunities will arise. We always look forward to the excitement each new year brings.”

Executive Director Brian McFadden said they are kicking off 2019 with the “Winter Blues Weekend.”

From Jan. 18–20, live performances will take place at various venues and establishments throughout the Village and at Holiday Valley.

Back again for the second year is Ellicottville’s newest music festival, “Winter Music Jam,” that will take place Feb. 22–23 at some favorite venues throughout the village and Holiday Valley.

McFadden said more than a dozen different acts are expected to perform over the weekend offering a variety of musical genres for people’s listening pleasure. A full schedule will be available closer to the event.

“It’s the weekend after Presidents’ Weekend, which is huge in Ellicottville and a sellout,” he said. “Last year, we built this new event for the weekend after which is typically a slower weekend. It turned out to be a success—almost equal to President’s Weekend.”

Ellicottville’s last event of the ski season is the “Winter Carnival” featuring the Mardi Gras Parade, March 8–10. What better way to bring winter fun to a close than a Masquerade Party on Friday night when

the Mardi Gras King and Queen are crowned for the weekend.

Other upcoming events include Ellicottville’s “Girl’s Getaway Weekend,” May 31 to June 2 where “the girls” gather to celebrate and create memories.

The 7th annual Holiday Valley Mudslide, June 15, is a muddy mess of fun with running and 11 obstacles along a 3.5-mile or 5.4-mile course.

A recurring summer event is the “Ellicottville Gazebo Series” that runs June 27 through Sept. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Holiday Valley Resort hosts the “Summer Music Festival” July 5–7 when the first fairway at Holiday Valley’s Double Black Diamond Golf Course becomes one of the best outdoor concert venues in the region over Independence Day Weekend.

There will plenty happening on in the Village over the weekend as well. Past performers include “Dennis Deyoung and The Music of STYX,” “38 Special,” “Grand Funk Railroad,” “Blood Sweat and Tears,” “Three Dog Night” and “KC and The Sunshine Band.” Look for the schedule in March 2019.

The music of summer continues with the “Jazz and Blues Weekend” held this year from July 26–28 in the Village. Jazz and Blues lovers have the option to choose from a variety of performance areas ranging from restaurants, bars and nightclubs and street-side spots.

Car enthusiasts can’t wait for “Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekend” that takes place Sept. 13–15. Back for its 19th year, the Classic Car Show will be set up on Washington Street, showcasing special cars, trucks and hot rods, with a performance by Terry Buchwald with his renowned Elvis impersonation.

The “Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival” will be held the following weekend, Sept. 20–22. The first Lacrosse Festival was a huge success and this second year is expected to be even better.

On Oct. 12 and 13, Ellicottville will host its everpopular “Fall Festival” when thousands of festival goers come for a lively weekend of unique foods, fine art, an arts and crafts show, carnival rides, live entertainment and much more.

The weekend after Thanksgiving, the chamber kicks off the holiday season with its old-fashioned “Christmas in Ellicottville” event that offers a weekend of free, family-oriented activities for all ages.

Attendees can experience rides with Santa on a fire truck, touring the village on a horse-drawn wagon, interactive children’s activities or strolling downtown and enjoying the storefronts decorated in a Christmas theme.

The following weekend “A Christmas Stroll” takes place in the Village featuring a Living Nativity, complete with a camel.

No doubt many of us have made resolutions to improve something in our lives, as the New Year’s tradition goes.

Although we have pretty set traditions in the United States on how to ring in the new year, the global history of the annual celebration is a fascinating one.

The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago.

According to History.com, they were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year — though for them the year began not in January but mid-March when the crops were planted.

In ancient Rome, the reform-minded emperor Julius Caesar tinkered with the calendar and established Jan. 1 as the beginning of the new year circa 46 B.C. Named for Janus, the two-faced god whose spirit inhabited doorways and arches, January had special significance for the Romans.

Believing that Janus symbolically looked back into the previous year and ahead into the future, the Romans offered sacrifices to the deity and made promises of ethical conduct for the coming year.

In ancient Persia, the natives traditionally gave New Year’s gifts of eggs, which symbolized productiveness.

For early Christians, the first day of the new year became the traditional occasion for thinking about one’s past mistakes and resolving to do and be better in the future.

In 1740, the English clergyman John Wesley, founder of Methodism, created the Covenant Renewal Service, most commonly held on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. Also known as watch night services, they included readings from Scriptures and hymn singing and served as a spiritual alternative to the raucous celebrations usually held to celebrate the coming of the new year.

For millions of Americans, the new year is celebrated by watching the ball drop at Times Square in New York City.

in Times Square and celebrate the renaming of Longacre Square to Times Square.

The celebration involved a street festival that lasted all day, which ended in a show of fireworks. More than 200,000 people were in attendance.

A few years later, the first ball dropping celebration atop One Times Square was held on Dec. 31, 1907.

In 1942 and 1943, the ball lowering was suspended due to the wartime dimout. The crowds who still gathered in Times Square celebrated with a minute of silence followed by chimes ringing out from an amplifier truck parked at One Times Square.

The original New Year’s Eve Ball weighed 700 pounds and was five feet in diameter. It was made of iron and wood and was decorated with 100 25-watt light bulbs.

Most New Year’s traditions are believed to ensure good luck for the coming year. Many parts of the United States observe the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck.

People in Japan eat toshikoshi soba, or buckwheat soba noodles, at midnight in order to say goodbye to the past year and welcome the new one. Dishes in Greece, Mexico and the Netherlands, among other places, feature ring-shaped cakes or pastries to symbolize the year coming full circle.

In Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico, some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories.

Due to the location of the International Date Line, the country of New Zealand is the first one to ring in the new year. The U.S. state of Hawaii celebrates 22 hours later.

In nearby Sydney, Australia, one of the biggest international celebrations is held when more than 80,000 fireworks are set off from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

However one marks the new year, we also express wishes that our communities and leaders can govern with wisdom and the spirit of cooperation as they attempt to find solutions and provide services that benefit us all.
