A jury-rigged rope tow on Fish Hill in the mid1930s seems like a fairly humble beginning for developing Ellicottville into the ski town it is today.

But as people fl ocked to the village — ski trains arrived each weekend carrying city folk to try the slopes — and interest in skiing grew, members of the Ellicottville Ski Club in 1957 purchased 30 acres of land and formed Win-Sum Ski Corp., the parent company of Holiday Valley.

This month, the resort celebrates 60 years of operation since the fi rst T-bar and slope opened to the public on Jan. 4, 1958.

On Saturday, Jan. 6, the resort will celebrate its anniversary at 1 p.m. on the Champagne Sundeck outside Yodeler Lodge with cake and champagne.

Skeleton Skeleton had twice been included in the Olympic Winter Games in Switzerland, the country where it originated, at the Games in St. Moritz in 1928 and 1948. However, it was not an offi cial Olympic event until the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.

Skeleton involves a descent on a special track in a sled with steel runners and a weighted frame, and the athlete lays face down and head fi rst, controlling the sled using special spikes on their shoes. The Olympic skeleton competition lasts for two days and each athlete completes a total of four runs. Medals are awarded based on fastest total time over the four runs. In this event, there are only two sets of medals, singles competitions for men and women.

Participants wear special leather gloves, durable helmets, a track suit made of elastic fabric to tightly encircle the body, and shoes that have spikes on the soles.

“One of the interesting things about our history is that (the founders) had this vision and stuck to this plan that is still going on today,” explained Jane Eshbaugh, marketing director at Holiday Valley.

For starters, the “WinSum” aspect of the parent company’s name stands for Winter-Summer, inferring the resort would be a year-round attraction.

And although known primarily for its ski slopes, the summer features have increased in recent years.

“It didn’t happen right away, but now summer is a really important part of our business,” Eshbaugh said.

According to a publication produced for Holiday Valley’s 50th anniversary in 2008, the resort’s roots date back to 1936, when Ellicottville’s G. Wilbur “Doc” Northrup and German ski champion Karl Fahrner brought the state Skiing Championships to Ellicottville.

“Northrup and Fahrner jury rigged a rope tow on Fish Hill just west of the village and soon skiers began fl ocking to Ellicottville from Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and all points in between,” the publication reads.

Among them was Edna Northrup, a well-known Ellicottville resident. She was recently interviewed

by Holiday Valley for a series of anniversary videos and, alongside the now late Lillian Congdon, in 2002 wrote “For the Love of Skiing: Our Story of Skiing in Ellicottville.”

“My fi rst trip to Ellicottville was in January of 1944,” Northrup wrote in the book. “I was 18 years old and tremendously excited about skiing. It was early in the morning on a glorious day when I stepped onto the train at the foot of Main Street in Buffalo with my new winter clothes and skis.

The train was a steam engine with one passenger car, a baggage car and a caboose.”

Seemingly each year since Holiday Valley’s opening in the late 1950s, the resort has made improvements to become the destination it is today.

Over its fi rst few seasons, additional tows and the Tannenbaum T-bar were installed and, as it closed in on its fi rst decade, the resort saw the installation of the Mardi Gras double chair and School Haus T-bar, according to a timeline provided by the resort.

In 1962, the fi rst nine holes of golf opened to live up to the year-round mantra the resort would improve on as the years progressed.

In 1965, the fi rst snowmaking equipment was installed.

started Holiday Valley we’d get to where we are today,” said Eshbaugh.

“Stuff just didn’t exist back then — we didn’t even know about chairlifts and snowmaking and things like that.”

As the resort entered the 1970s, it continued to grow. Among the notable milestones, the Middle Chalet was enlarged in 1972, night skiing reopened in 1972 after one season on Yodeler in 1970, the Clubhouse Chalet was enlarged in 1977 and Valley Village was developed that same year.

In 1978, Cindy’s double chair was installed.

Although Holiday Valley — as well as the village — saw growth prior to the 1980s, Eshbaugh said it was the ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000s where the area saw the most signifi cant growth.

“When we fi rst started, it was tough,” Eshbaugh explained. “They had a lot of years when they had to go to the bank ‘hat in hand’ and beg them to give them a loan to do something small. Then, in the ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000s, we really grew a lot.”

She attributed the growth to the interest overall in skiing during that period.

In 1982, the Clubhouse was expanded; the following year the Morning Star triple chair was installed and the Mardi Gras quad chair and SnowPine double chair were installed in 1984.

Also that year, the Middle Chalet was expanded and the Holiday Valley Rental Management Offi ce opened.

In 1985, the resort purchased the Holiday Valley Motel and opened the Holiday Valley Realty Offi ce. In 1986, the School Haus double chair was installed and the Slippery Streets Clubhouse opened.

The next year, the second nine holes of golf opened, the Clubhouse was again enlarged and the Tannenbaum triple chair opened.

The next 30 years saw similar feats — mostly the opening of various chair lifts, including the Mardi Gras Xpress Hi Speed quad chair lift in 1996.

There was also the opening of the pool complex and day care center in 1990, the construction of Tannenbaum Lodge and the iconic clock tower in 1992 and the opening of Yodeler Lodge in 2000.

Holiday Valley Tubing Company opened in 2003, Tannenbaum Lodge was expanded in 2004 and the Spruce Lake reservoir for snowmaking was completed in 2006. The last decade has been marked by continued improvements in snowmaking, the opening of Sky High Aerial Park and the Mountain Coaster in 2011 and the opening of the Holiday Valley Lodge in late 2012.

Eshbaugh said baby boomers have been a signifi cant part of Holiday Valley’s growth over the last six decades, but as that generation continues to “age out” of skiing, it’s up to the upcoming generations — notably millennials and Generation Z — to fi ll the pipeline.

“We need to continue to appeal to every generation, and each one changes a little bit,” she said. “People are starting to be a little more risk-averse, and there are risks with skiing. We need to keep convincing people it really is worth it.”

Eshbaugh credits the night programs like local school ski clubs as a major part of keeping the interest in skiing going long into the future.

“It’s a great way to get new people started because they come with their friends — they don’t have to be with their parents for a short period of time — and take lessons,” Eshbaugh said. “It’s really our main way to trying to keep that pipeline full.”

What does the future have in store for Holiday Valley when it celebrates its milestone anniversaries in years to come?

“We want to continue to be successful and we want people continue to want to have exciting, outdoor activities,” Eshbaugh said.

“We also want to continue to grow our summer business because more activities then fi ll in our ‘gap seasons.’”

“I knew the kid was a scorer,” said Ellicottville coach Dave McCann.

“Some of the guys on our team played AAU with him, so we knew what to expect.”

What wasn’t expected however, was the foul trouble Enders would fi nd himself in. By the third quarter, Enders was watching from the bench as he sat with a lot of game left to play, and four fouls to his name.

“He’s one of the best players around, when he’s not on the court, it’s defi nitely not going to help us,” said Belfast coach Joe Hennessy. “You’ve got to give it up to Ellicottville though, they knew what they had to do and they’re the ones who got him in

With the game tied at 44 by the latter half of the third quarter, it looked like it could still be either team’s game. With Enders still sitting out, as well as consistent foul shooting and 12 points from Griffi n Chudy, the Eagles were able to soar past the Bulldogs to earn the title of tournament champions.

“I thought we really weathered some adversity.

They hit a lot of shots in the second quarter and we had to play from behind.

Even with the amount of shots they were hitting, our guys didn’t hang their heads and we worked on what needed to be fi xed going into the second half,” said McCann.

Patricia Needham 1928-2017

Patricia Ann (Pennock) Needham, passed away December 27, 2017, who resided in Ft. Wayne, IN most recently but also called Elizabethtown, PA, Ellicottville, NY and Allison Park, PA home for many years. Pat was born in Canton, OH May 21st, 1928 a daughter of the late Percy L. and Mary E. (Mowls) Pennock. Patricia married Robert Edward Needham of Struthers, OH at St Patrick’s Church in Youngstown, OH January 27th, 1951.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Robert who passed September 13th 1997 and her sister Jean E. (Pennock) O’Mara of Youngstown, OH. Pat graduated from Youngstown State University (Ohio) with a bachelor’s degree in education and was an avid reader throughout her life. Pat was active in many organizations including; Girl Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels, and as a member of Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic church and its Altar and Rosary Society. Surviving are her children Mary C Gorndt wife of James M Gorndt of Fort Wayne, IN., Robert A Needham husband of Cynthia L. Needham of Lewisburg, PA., Patricia J. Rebb wife of Jerry M Rebb of Avon, IN., Nancy N Gates wife of Richard C Gates of Elizabethtown, PA., and Thomas P Needham husband of Alice M Needham of Allison Park, PA. Pat was also blessed with 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was a loving and caring woman who will be missed by her family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 1 PM from Holy Name of Mary RC Church in Ellicottville. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Ellicottville.

This is fi ne for habits that keep us safe from harm, but more irritating when we are trying to change a bad habit.

So, one of the keys to changing a rock hard habit is to identify what cues in the environment are setting it off. Once the habit’s trigger has been identifi ed, it’s possible to make a change. But one of the classic mistakes people make is trying to suppress the habit. Research has shown that this tends to backfi re, making the habit, and its unconscious performance, come back even stronger.

Instead, it’s much better to try and replace the bad habit with a better one.

Rather than suppressing a snacking habit, for example, it’s better to make the snack food healthier: switch from candy to apples. If you fi nd yourself slipping, here’s a tip for quickly boosting self-control: Try thinking about your core values, something you really care about. It could be your partner, your family or a higher ideal. Studies have found this can help boost your self-control in a moment of weakness.

Finally, one of the most important messages emerging from the research is that breaking old habits is hard. The temptation is to bite off more than you can chew, but baby steps are likely to work better.

Try to start with minor bad habits, or only part of your bad habit. For example, it may not be possible to tackle unhealthy eating all in one go, but you can, at least, change what you habitually eat for breakfast.

With this change under your belt, you can layer another good habit on top, and then another.

For big changes, think small.

The post-holiday slump combined with subzero temperatures can make the fi rst couple weeks of January feel almost unbearable! Even if it’s too cold to spend the day on the slopes, there are still lots of ways to have fun on a chilly winter day.

Enjoy some homemade fun and homemade food—just perfect for a cozy weekend at home.

The crunchy, cold snow is perfect for snowman building, and the freezing temperatures will allow you to work on your snowman bit by bit, even if it’s 30 minutes or an hour at a time. If you want to make a snowman that will maintain its roly poly shape for weeks to come, there are a few tricks that will preserve your hard work: First, be sure to choose a place in the yard that is shaded, as the sun can make quick work of a snowman, even on a cold day. If the snow seems too dry to pack together, bring a full spray bottle or a watering can outside with you and spray a mist over the snow you plan to use to help it stay

together. After rolling your snowman and stacking his body parts together, pack extra snow where each of the snowballs meet. Use the spray bottle to mist the whole snowman, which will create a thin layer of ice to keep him from melting.

Raid the fridge for some facial features: a carrot for the nose, a couple of tomato slices for the eyes—use your imagination! Old dried out houseplants are perfect to use for a snowman’s (or snowwoman’s) hair. For a snowman that is visible even at night, use refl ectors or solar-powered LEDs for the eyes, mouth and buttons. Fill a couple of small spray bottles with a mixture of food coloring and water to give him a tie-dye look. Or, if zombies are more your style, fi ll a spray bottle with red food coloring for a bloody effect. Last but not least, be sure to take lots of pictures before old Frosty melts away!

grilled cheese croutons. If shedding a few pounds is one of your New Year’s resolutions, this soup is a win-win: the rich fl avor is satisfying, and the grilled cheese croutons give you just a taste of the classic comfort food, without the extra calories of a whole sandwich.

To make, sauté 2 diced medium red bell peppers and 1 diced medium sweet onion in a large Dutch oven in 2 tablespoons of melted butter over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes (or until golden and tender). Stir in 2 cloves of minced garlic, 2 tablespoons of tomato paste and 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika and cook, stirring constantly for 1 minute.

Stir in 1 can of whole peeled plum tomatoes with basil, 1 ½ cups of vegetable broth, 1 teaspoon of sugar,

½ tablespoon of salt and ½ teaspoon of pepper.

Crush the tomatoes into chunks with the back of a spoon. Bring the mixture to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in 1/3 cup of heavy cream and 1/3 cup of chopped fresh basil. Season with salt and pepper.

To make the grilled cheese croutons, rub four slices of toasted multigrain sourdough bread with 1 clove of garlic. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet; sprinkle with 1 ¼ cup of shredded white cheddar cheese. Broil for 2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden. Let stand for 1 minute; cut into 1 ½-inch pieces. Garnish the bowls of soup with your fresh croutons and enjoy!

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today encouraged anglers to put safety fi rst when ice fi shing. Four inches of solid ice is usually safe for anglers accessing ice on foot. However, ice thickness can vary on waterbodies and even within the same waterbody. Anglers should be particularly wary of areas of moving water and around boat docks and houses where bubblers may be installed to reduce ice buildup. The presence of snowmobile tracks or footprints on the ice should not be taken as evidence of safe ice conditions.

Individuals are strongly encouraged to check ice conditions and avoid situations that appear to present even a remote risk.

Testing the thickness of ice can easily be done with an auger or ice spud at various spots.

“Ice fi shing is a popular sport in New York State and with the post-Christmas drop in temperature, I am sure anglers are looking forward to an early start to the season this year,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “The rush to get out onto the ice can lead to tragedy unless anglers remain vigilant to the condition of the ice.

Anglers should heed DEC’s

recommendation of at least four inches of solid clear ice before venturing out on the ice.”

Ice fi shing continues to increase in popularity in New York State. Unlike the open water season, when an angler usually needs a boat to access good fi shing locations, no boat is required to access these locations once a water is covered with safe ice.

It’s also a great sport for families, as they can mix in skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, or other activities during an ice fi shing trip to keep everyone interested and happy.

As part of Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative Feb. 17-18, 2018, has been designated as a free fi shing weekend. The requirement for a fi shing license is waived during this period. This is a great opportunity to try ice fi shing for the fi rst time or for experienced anglers to take friends ice fi shing for the fi rst time. Beginning ice anglers are encouraged to download the Ice Fishing Chapter of DEC’s new I FISH NY Beginners’ Guide to Freshwater Fishing for information on how to get started ice fi shing.

The use of fi sh for bait is popular when ice fi shing and bait fi sh may be used in most, but not all waters, open to ice fi shing. Visit the DEC website for a list of special regulations by county to fi nd out where bait fi sh can and cannot be used, and for other regulations that apply to baitfi sh on DEC’s website.

Anglers are reminded to take these important steps when using baitfi sh while ice fi shing: Follow the bait fi sh regulations to prevent the spread of harmful fi sh diseases and invasive species (please see: Special Regulations by County); Use only certifi ed disease-free bait fi sh purchased at a local tackle store, or use only personally collected bait fi sh for use in the same water body in which they were caught; Do not reuse baitfi sh in another waterbody if you have replaced the water they were purchased in; and Dump unused baitfi sh and water in an appropriate location on dry land.

Anglers are reminded to make sure that they have a valid fi shing license before heading out on the ice.

Fishing licenses are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase.

Audubon Seeking Exhibitors and Volunteers for Snowflake

Audubon Community Nature Center is seeking sponsors, demonstrators, and volunteers for its winter celebration, the Snowfl ake Local Living Festival, on Saturday, February 3, 2018.

This longest-running of Audubon’s festivals showcases local and sustainable living skills and product demonstrations as well as favorites like alpacas to pet, snowshoes to try, live birds of prey presentations, and horsedrawn wagon rides.

The Festival’s emphasis on sustainability means visitors can learn about and experience ways to live a bit lighter on the planet.

The Nature Center is seeking exhibitors who have sustainably produced products and who can demonstrate those production skills at the Festival. Some examples are soap-making, natural dyes, candle-making, and gardening. Space is given on a modifi ed fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis with preference to organizations and vendors whose missions and products most closely compliment the Festival theme of sustainable living and the Nature Center’s mission of connecting people and nature.

The most recent preseason race was held at HoliMont on New Year’s Eve 2017. This was a Giant Slalom that consisted of two runs down the infamous ‘Wild Turkey’ run.

Holiday Valley’s U16 Women showed once again what a powerhouse this team is. Lauren Thomas

took the gold for U16 and overall. Teammate Logan Fredrickson walked away with the silver medal, Sierra Cappelli fi nished 4th, Hayly Fredrickson 5th and Caroline DeRose 6th.

Snowshoes fi t right over regular boots, and make hiking over the deep snow and through the winter woods a breeze. Snowshoes have an advantage over cross country skis in rougher terrain, as it’s easier to walk around obstacles, or to quickly change direction, and keep a tight grip on the ground.

Cross country skiing requires a little more equipment and knowhow, but also offers the user more speed and the opportunity to cover several times more ground with a single step than snowshoeing.

While the two sports offer some similarities, trails for each are often not interchangeable, and it’s important to know the trails you’re on, pay attention to signs and follow trail etiquette. (For example, many groomed cross country ski trails do not allow snowshoers on them because they tear up the snow in a manner that makes them hard to ski on.)

The Enchanted Mountains region offers an abundance of opportunities for both sports.

The cross country trails along the top ridgeline of Holiday Valley and around the golf course at the bottom of the mountain are generally packed by snowmobile and if weather permits, the lower trails are trackset. The trails on top are open until 3 p.m. and are recommended for those with intermediate skills. For $15, you can purchase a 2-ride cross country ticket for the Mardi Gras, Cindy’s or Tannenbaum lift. Ride up, and you can either ride the Mardi Gras or Tannenbaum chair back down, or ski down one of the easier trails (Tannenbaum or Explorer/Day’s End are recommended). The easier trails along the golf course at the base of the mountain are open during daylight hours and feature solar

lights for a nighttime ski on the golf course, just be sure to stay away from the ponds that are used for snowmaking.

Snowshoeing is also available on the lower slopes and on the golf course, but be sure to stay to the side of the cross country tracks.

Adventurous and experienced cross country skiers can make use of the miles and miles of mountain bike trails located in the state forest bordering Holiday Valley.

These trails are not patrolled or maintained, so take all precautions of a responsible back country skier.

Both snowshoes and cross country skis are available to rent at Holiday Valley’s High Performance shop.

Once you have your snowshoes or skis in hand, you can head out of town and explore even more.

Just a short drive south of Ellicottville, you’ll fi nd Allegany State Park, New York’s largest state park sprawling 65,000 acres.

There you will fi nd miles of trails, including Bear Paw, a dedicated snowshoeing trail. The park often hosts special snowshoeing events during the winter months.
