As blankets of snow continue to fall over Western New York, eager skiers and snowboards will head to Ellicottville this weekend for opening day at HoliMont.

While the cold temperatures and harsher driving conditions may make winter less enjoyable for some, plenty could be hitting the slopes for the first time Friday and making their way downhill for another season of snowsport fun.

Little Valley student named new American Angus junior member

When everything is added up, removing ash trees and select other species from Cattaraugus County-owned forests could net the county up to $1.5 million over the next couple of years.

That estimate is from the Cattaraugus County Legislator Joseph Snyder of Ischua who last year pushed to inventory endangered ash trees in county forests as a first step toward managing the county forests again.

The emerald ash borer, an invasive species which was first detected in New York in the Randolph area off Interstate 86 almost 10 years ago, will quickly spread through a stand of ash trees, often killing them within a few years.

Earlier this month, county lawmakers accepted a $234,000 bid for ash and other marked timber on a 117-acre parcel in the town of South Valley. It is the fourth parcel to be put out for bid.

So far, the county has accepted more than $768,000 in bids for the timber, Snyder said in a telephone interview last week.

Snyder is a timber and lumber buyer for Fitzpatrick & Weller Co.,

Ellicottville. He’s also a member of the County Legislature’s Public Works Committee, which oversees the thousands of acres of county forests.

The forests haven’t been managed in some time, Snyder said. The first thing he had to convince fellow legislators to do was pay for a survey with an eye toward finding out where the ash trees were.

Generations Forestry of Kane, Pa., was hired to inventory the forests, mark trees for removal and make sure the forests are cleaned up when the timber company leaves.

Snyder said the committee’s direction to the Generations Forestry was to not only cull ash trees from the forests but manage for the long-term health of the forests, provide a good environment for wildlife and make it look good.

Other tree species are being harvested to meet the other goals, Snyder said.

“It’s not a heavy harvest,” he said. “It’s ash-driven.”

The only parcel that has been harvested so far is one in the town of Ashford. The standard contracts require the harvest be completed within two years, Snyder said.

The Ashford parcel had 360,000 board feet of

timber, of which 238,000 board feet were ash. Of the 1,671 trees on the parcel, 1,088 were ash trees.

While the committee has talked about utilizing some of the revenue from timber sales to improve the county forests, nothing has been finalized, Snyder said.

“It may be swept into the general fund,” he said. “That’s OK. It’s taxpayer money. But we need to work on access to the properties, such as driveways and parking lots.

We need to mark borders.”

The forests are good for hiking and hunting, among other things, he said.

Some of the properties are landlocked.

Other county forest properties have been bid in Portville, Ischua and South Valley.

“I’m pleased with the value of the trees that have been bid,” Snyder said.

“It’s better than I thought.

We had a good number of bidders and the prices were very attractive.”

He said much of the logs may be headed for China where ash is used as a substitute for oak in furniture, flooring and cabinets. The bid prices seem higher than what would be offered if the timber were to be sent to sawmills, he added.

Ellicottville school board approves Emergency Capital Fund

After major flooding in October, the Ellicottville Central School Board of Education approved a resolution last week to create an emergency capital fund.

During Columbus Day weekend, there was significant flooding in the lower level of the Elementary School. The school board declared it a Type 2 Action under the State Environmental Quality Review.

The board also approved a resolution declaring the existence of an emergency situation arising out of the unexpected flooding at the district’s Elementary School Building.

The emergency capital fund would address the situation to ensure the safety of district students, employees and members of the public.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, in his Superintendent’s Report, Robert Miller said he attended a Safety Forum at the Cornell Cooperative Extension. He said there will be one more lockdown drill before the end of the year.

Erie Ski Club to donate $4,200 to Lounsbury Adaptive Program Lunch

The Erie Ski Club will be making a $4,200 donation to the Lounsbury Adaptive Program on Friday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Lounsbury building at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville.

The club put on the Warren Miller ski and adventure movie Nov. 24 at the HO Hirt Auditorium in Erie. Ticket sales and sponsorships totaled $4,200 and the board of directors decided to donate it to the Lounsbury Adaptive Program.

The program will be using the donation towards the $8,000 price tag of a specially designed Dynamique Bi-Ski used by persons with disabilities such as amputations, spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy that do not allow them to ski standing up.

The Erie Ski Club of Erie, Pa., is a group of 120 outdoor enthusiasts who love skiing and other outdoor sports and participate in many social activities that take place year round.

Allegany State Park will hold “By the Fireside” from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Dec. 15 in the lobby of the Red House Administration Building.

This month’s featured performance is by the Studio 107 Chamber Players of Olean High School, playing songs of the season. The group, while consisting mainly of students, is often joined by alumni, community members and teachers.

They got their start in 2008 performing at the Olean Community Thanksgiving dinner.

Since then they have performed at various venues including community events, weddings, private parties and nursing homes.

HoliMont’s programs haven’t changed much and are similar to recent years, except for a few modifications.

Future development in the WestMont area of the resort is still in the master plan but, unfortunately, those plans are on hold for some different reasons.

The plan is expected to happen in phases and will include new slopes and eventually a new lodge, along with a new beginner area. Additionally, HoliMont has plans to improve the children’s programs and learn to ski programs by giving beginners their own area with a wide-open space.

Upcoming winter events at HoliMont include Snowshoe Social, Jan. 12; Contractors Day, Jan. 25; Men’s Day, Feb. 1; Ladies’ Day, Feb. 22; and the new “Frosty CX” fat bike race coming Feb. 23.

The resort is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekends for guests and members, except for Christmas week.

Ellicottville physician part of response team at Bush funeral

By Kellen M. Quigley Dr. Brian Walters, an EMS physician from Ellicottville, spent several days this past week in Washington, D.C., providing medical support during the state funeral for former President George H.W. Bush.

In addition to County EMS Medical Director for both Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties, Walters serves as a member of the National Disaster Medical System’s Disaster Medical Assistance Team.

During the time the public paid their respects to President Bush, NDMS personnel along with U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps officers stand ready to provide advanced life support and basic medical care to the thousands of people attending the event, and Walters was one of them.

“It’s quite an honor to be a part of something like that,” he said. “When our nation comes together like that to celebrate the life and service of a president — to be a part of that ceremony to honor him — to me, it’s awe-inspiring and humbling at the same time.”

NDMS is a federally administered program that can support communities with medical care, veterinarian care and mortuary assistance during disasters or public health emergencies.

President Bush’s funeral was the third National Special Security Event Walters provided medical support to in the last 18 months. He said he also did a 14-day deployment in October to Hurricane Michael in Florida.

“For things like this that are pre-planned, once it becomes a (NSSE), then they’ll activate certain teams and we’ll be deployed down there for a period of time,” he said. “Once President Bush died, I got notified Saturday afternoon

and within 24 hours was in Washington, D.C.” NDMS teams consist of physicians, nurses, paramedics, fatality management professionals and experienced command and control staff from around the country, Walters said. There are more than 6,000 team members organized into 70 response teams.

Originally from Cheektowaga, Walters began working in the ERs in the Southern Tier about nine years ago and then moved to Ellicottville.

He said he applied to be part of the DMAT team a couple years ago. Because it’s a federal job, he said the application process took several months with background checks to be approved for the team, which is on call every three to four months.

“Everybody has to retain their regular credentials” such as his medical license, Walters explained. Teams also have to attend regular meetings and trainings during the year.

Walters, 40, has lived in Ellicottville for about eight years, and his daughter Jessica, 20, studies astrophysics at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

In addition to his county medical director duties, Walter is a tactical physician on the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) and Medical Director for the county jail. He’s dual board certified in both Emergency Medicine and EMS. “That all gives me a lot of background for what we had been doing the past few

days,” he said.

Providing medical care during emergencies and special events, such as Bush’s funeral, is two-fold, Walters said. First, there’s providing medical support to the government or law enforcement agencies on the Capitol grounds, and second, they’re there to respond to any emergencies that may occur during the week, such as someone suddenly falling ill.

“I think it’s one of those things that goes on behind the scenes that no one really knows about,” he said. “All our medical equipment gets shipped there and within a short time we’re assembled and providing care in those times of need.”

For national security reasons, Walters said he couldn’t disclose where exactly he was or who he interacted with, but he could say he was on site around the Capitol and in the vicinity of all the congressmen, dignitaries and officials seen on TV. After being in D.C. Monday and Tuesday while Bush’s body laid in state in the Rotunda and Wednesday during the funeral at the National Cathedral, Walters returned home Thursday with another once-in-alifetime experience with DMAT to look back on.

“For me it was that sense of honor, that sense of service and being a part of something bigger than yourself,” he said. “It’s giving back to our local community and to the country as a whole that makes me proud to serve in that way.”

After opening the day after Thanksgiving, Holiday Valley Resort is already marking its 18th skiing day today — getting the 2018-19 season off to a great start.

Weather permitting, Holiday Valley should have 85 percent of its slopes open this weekend, said marketing director Jane Eshbaugh.

“We’ve been very fortunate, we’ve been able to make a lot of snow on top of 65 inches of natural snow so far this season,” Eshbaugh said Monday.

Sophomore Clayton Rowland turned in a pair of strong performances for the Ellicottville varsity boys basketball team last week for a total of 35 points against Southwestern and Frewsburg.

On Tuesday night at Southwestern, Rowland scored 20 points with 10 rebounds in a loss.

The team came through on Thursday night, however, in a home double-overtime victory over Frewsburg as Rowland scored 15 points with eight rebounds and five assists.

Frewsburg 55, Ellicottville 42 FREWSBURG — Gabby Iuculano poured in 27 points and Mikayla Jones added 12 as Frewsburg took a season-opening victory Friday night.

The Bears outscored the Eagles 15-7 in the final quarter to create some separation.

Linnea Jimerson scored 14 points and Sierra Maybe added nine points.

Meganne Chapman had a team-high 10 rebounds.

A senior center for the Ellicottville varsity girls basketball team, Meganne Chapman has made a strong impact as a rebounder. On Friday night as the Eagles visited Frewsburg, Chapman pulled down 10 boards.

“Throughout the season Meg has been a positive leader for our varsity Lady Eagles,” firstyear coach Chelsea Cole noted. “She continues to work hard in practice and encourages her teammates to work hard.”

Ellicottville 55, Frewsburg 53, 2OT It wasn’t the cleanest game and it wasn’t the prettiest game.

But given the mistakes his young team survived and the plays it made in not one, but two overtimes, Ellicottville coach Dave McCann will take this kind of a win any time.

Leif Jimerson pumped in 25 points and, thanks to the sophomore, Ellicottville forced a second OT in miraculous fashion before topping Frewsburg in a non-league matchup Thursday.

With the clock ticking down and the Eagles trailing by three in the first overtime, Jimerson took a pass on “a scramble play” in the corner and was fouled on his gametying 3-point attempt. He stepped up to the line with just 1.1 ticks remaining and made all three free throws to extend the game.

“That was a pretty big moment for him,” McCann said.

The Eagles made another big play at the end of the second OT to seal it.

With 30 seconds left in a tie game, they missed a shot, but got the ball back, again on a loose ball scramble. Clayton Rowland,

who finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists, was able to find Niklas Logel wide open under the basket, who made a layup with five seconds remaining to make it 55-53.

Frewsburg had a look from just inside half court for the win, but missed.

“Frewsburg’s a good team. For our kids being young, to pull that one out and get a win — any win we’re going to get is going to be a big win for us,” said McCann, who lost, among others, Big 30 All-Star First Teamer Elliot Bowen from last year’s group.

Jimerson added five rebounds and four assists. Ellicottville won despite going a dismal 10-for-27 at the free throw line.

“For us to stick with it and fight through some of those mistakes ... it was an ugly win, but it was still a win. Both teams fought real hard. It was just one of those games where unfortunately somebody had to lose.”

Quinn Conlan, a nephew of former Buffalo Bill Shane Conlan, racked up 31 points and 15 rebounds for the Bears.

Continued from last week, we learn more about what makes Ellicottville Central School students different from the rest through their love of winter sports and living near some of the northeastern United States’ top ski resorts.

Elissa Cole, a senior at Ellicottville, said she began skiing when she was 3 years old. Her father was a passionate about skiing and taught her himself, she said.

“My favorite part of the sport is being able to ski technically and enjoy the scenery on nice days,” she said.

After a day on the slopes, Cole said she loves to eat greasy foods, such as burgers and subs.

Currently, she competes in freestyle, specifically moguls, but when Cole was younger, she also competed in aerials.

“To get the best training, I had to modify my school schedule in 10-12 grade, so I could move to a larger ski area and train six days a week as well as exercise daily,” she said.

Even though competing is going to take a backseat while she attends college, Cole said she is always going to be a skier.

“Starting next year, I will be attending Montana State which is near two large ski areas,” she said. “I will also teach my children to ski when I am older and hope that they will also enjoy it.”

Another senior at Ellicottville, Mikey McGuire said he began skiing when he was 2 and after 10 years preparation started the freestyle team at 12.

“My favorite part about skiing is probably all the friends I meet from different places and just being out on the slopes is

an amazing feeling,” he said.

McGuire currently competes in freestyle skiing where competitions contains a 200-yard course with mogul kickers and moguls in between each mogul.

“I have had great success where I have placed around top 15 in each competition I’ve been in,” he added.

McGuire said he plans on going to college where I can still ski — or at least one that’s close to a hill.

ALTHOUGH ONLY in seventh grade, and coming to the sport later than McGuire and Cole, Mason Perks has just as big a passion for snowboarding as when he began at 7 years old.

“My main reason for starting was that family all does it, but I don’t continue just because of that,” he said.

After numerous lessons and practices, Perks said snowboarding felt enjoyable, like going down a hill or slope was happiness.

“I love snowboarding because going quickly, but

in control,” he explained.

“It is intense, but fun altogether.”

When the day is done, Perks said he like to go home, sit on the couch and have a warm mug of hot cocoa in his hand and a plate of crackers in front of him.

“The craziest thing that has ever happened to me at Holiday Valley was when, one day, it was so packed, I could barely make turns,” he said.

Meganne Chapman, also a senior at Ellicottville, said she began skiing in the first grade with the Ellicottville Ski Program.

“I wanted to experience a new outdoor activity,” she said.

After a day out on the slopes, Chapman said she loves to eat a grilled cheese sandwhich and French fries made right at Holiday Valley, her favorite place to ski.

But what about skiing does she love so much?

“I love the feeling of snow running under my skis and the sound that skis make against the snow,” she said.

RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A GOOD CAUSE FOR CF that still has no cure. It requires hours of daily treatments to maintain my health. This monster has taken many young souls from this earth. I happen to know quite a few of those people who were taken far too soon.

Yes, I am referring to Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and other organs.

The mucus causes frequent lung infections which eventually scar the lung tissue over time. At end-stage CF, people are on oxygen and can’t even walk 10 feet without being winded. People are also placed on the transplant list, in hopes they get a second chance at an extended time on earth.

There are many who pass away waiting for the call for new lungs.

There are also many who get the call, but only 50 percent are alive after one year of having the double lung transplant procedure. Today, only 5 percent of the CF population is 40 years or older. Scary statistics, I know. I live with it.

But before I get to that, hear me out first.

This is very near and dear to my heart. This is something I and 30,000 other individuals in the United States live with. It is a life-limiting disease

So, what is it that I would love for you to do?

I’d love for you to join myself and many others as we help raise awareness and money to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. It would mean the world to me to see lots of old and new faces there.

So, what are the details for this event? Well, let me share that with you right now.

This fundraising event, Exercise for Cystic Fibrosis, will take place on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at Madigan’s in Ellicottville. It starts at 4 p.m. and will be held in the upstairs bar.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased ahead of time at Core Performance, or by contacting me at 378-6604. They may also be purchased at the door on the day of the event.

There will be basket raffles, drinks, food, a DJ (DJ Tanner), fun for all and more! I must also mention this is a kid-friendly event.

You may have noticed the word “exercise” in the event title. I will be

instructing a 30-minute cardio blast workout and exercising for those with CF who can’t. Cardio Blast is a total body workout that combines cardio, strength and agility movements — all bodyweight exercises.

These movements will keep your heart rate elevated, burn fat and make you sweat. If you’re at a beginner fitness level, don’t let this scare you, because you can modify. Yes, I will show you all of the modifications you can use.

Come prepared for a workout and just have fun! If you don’t feel comfortable working out, then just watch, sip on some beverages, enjoy good company and support those of us who battle this disease daily.

Obituaries Eva J. Sischo, 86, formerly of Ellicottville, passed away on Dec. 8, 2018, in Roscoe, N.Y. She was born on June 24, 1932, in Conewango, the daughter of the late Clifford and Beatrice (Grey) Hotchkiss. On Aug. 5, 1950, she married Keith Sischo, who predeceased her on Dec. 25, 2016.

Mrs. Sischo owned and operated the Sischo Radio and TV Service repair shop in Ellicottville for many years with her husband.

She was also a lifelong musician. Along with her husband, Keith, she was a member of their band, The Goldtones, as well as the United Church in Ellicottville.

Mrs. Sischo also worked

Eva J. Sischo throughout the community at different jobs and enjoyed her time helping the elderly. She held many hobbies, including gardening, golfing, skiing and fencing. Mrs. Sischo also enjoyed motorcycles, working with horses and raising Australian Shepherds.

Mrs. Sischo is survived by two daughters, Beverlee (Harold) Swartwout of Hancock and Michelle (Steve Rogers) Sischo of Chapel Hill, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jason (Erin) Grover, Jamie (Damian) Munn and Landon Rogers; five great-grandchildren; Aria Munn, Cadence Munn, Makenna Hill, Logan Grover and Lukas Grover; and several nieces

and nephews.

Besides her parents and loving husband of 66 years, Mrs. Sischo is predeceased by a granddaughter, Leia Grace Rogers; a brother, Leonard Hotchkiss; and a sister, Audrey Michelson.

Friends may call on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mentley Funeral Home Inc. 411 Rock City St., Little Valley, NY. Funeral services will be held immediately following the hours at 1 p.m. from the funeral home.

Burial will be in Cherry Creek Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the United Church of Ellicottville and the Meals on Wheels in Hancock.

New York Farm Bureau members wrapped up their 62nd annual state meeting last week with an evening banquet full of awards, state dignitaries and celebration for another successful meeting that set the organization’s public policy agenda for 2019.

Phyllis Couture, of West Valley, was one of three

people to received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award. She was presented the award for her many decades of service to New York Farm Bureau and her community.

Couture is currently the Promotion and Education Committee Chair on the New York Farm Bureau State Board of Director.

She was re-elected to the position at the meeting.

Couture also helped to establish the national Pro-Ed Committee with the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Couture and her husband, Chuck, operate a greenhouse business and sell fresh vegetables at farm markets in Cattaraugus County.

‘Kingdom of the blind’

Snow may delight young children itching for a day off from school. But for many homeowners, the sight of snow means their time will soon be spent clearing paths and plowing driveways rather than building snowmen and sledding with friends.

The sight of falling snow also may inspire some homeowners to think about the roofs of their homes. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety warns that it is important to understand the risk of roof collapse due to the weight of snow on the roof. Roof structures that are in good condition can support roughly 20 pounds per square foot.

IIBHS says this equates to around four feet of new snow before a roof will become stressed.

Total snowfall is not the only factor to consider. Homeowners also must check the type of snow that has fallen. According to House Logic, six inches of wet snow is equal to the weight of about 38 inches of dry snow.

That means it may take much less sodden snow to weigh down a roof.

Roof condition and the shape of the roof bear consideration as well. Popular

Mechanics says the ideal pitched roof is smooth and steep so that the snow slides off.

Closely spaced rafters improve the strength of the roof. A flat or slightly pitched roof may accumulate snow more readily.

Homeowners are urged to inspect roof rafters to see if they are cracked from previous snowstorms or damaged from insects or rot.

Snapping or popping sounds while snow is on the roof is not a good sign.

House Logic also says that homeowners can tell if the snow load on the roof is too much by paying attention to interior doors. If such doors begin to stick, that may be a signal that there’s enough weight on the center of the house to distort the door frames. Houses that had improper renovations or homes in which load-bearing walls were removed may be more susceptible to this problem.

“It was a great weekend.

I can’t complain at all,” she said. “We were in two places at once. My daughter and sister were in Randolph, I was at the gift shop and it worked out good.”

The shop currently has a good assortment of Christmas-themed items, including ornaments and many gift items.

There is a selection of decorative signs, home décor, florals, candles, handcrafted furniture, specialty foods, Rada Knives, bath and body items, and handmade sweater mittens — to name a few. Scanlan said more handcrafted items are brought in all the time.

Scanlan opened her gift shop right next door to Schubert Enterprises LLC, a business co-owned by her and brother, Randy, who have been in business for many years. Their business focuses on signs, banners, apparel, screen printing and embroidery.

She decided to do a second business and is the sole owner of Rustic Originals.

Because she loves crafting and has taken her homemade items to local craft shows over the years, she decided to open a gift shop. She said another factor was there are not many gift shops around this area.

“I just thought it would give people a place to go and shop for gifts, so we built a small building and put stuff in there,” she said.

“I do craft shows anyway, so I decided to see how it would go.”

Scanlan’s sister and a couple of friends have joined her in filling the shop with their handcrafted items and they also help her man the store.

Scanlan said her sister, Nadine Jimerson, does gift packets with specialty mustards and similar things.

“I’ve been a registered business doing the country crafts since 2015, but I did not have a storefront until now,” she said. “Crafting is something I love to do and I’ve done it my whole life. It’s kind of like therapy

to me. My friends who put their own things in the shop share my passion for handcrafting items.”

Young hunter shoots red deer in Franklinville last month

By Rick Miller On the day after Thanksgiving, a young Farmersville woman shot was looked like an unusually large doe in the neighboring town of Franklinville.

It turns out the 16-year-old’s first deer was a red deer which, unlike the whitetail deer, is not native to New York — or to the North American continent, for that matter.

State Department of Environmental Conservation wildlife officials in Region 9 had heard reports about a large red deer living in the wild in the area where this one was shot, but had been unable to locate it.

The New York Department of Agriculture and Markets had attempted to locate the owner of the red deer, unsuccessfully.

Two days after the deer was shot, a DEC supervising officer, Lt. Donald Pleakis, Environmental Conservation Officers Jason Powers and Nate Mead and Wildlife Biologist Ryan Rockefeller responded to a report of a red deer taken in the town of Franklinville.

The hunter’s family had field dressed the deer and transported

it to their residence in Farmersville, according to DEC officials.

The family contacted Powers when they became suspicious of the animal. The hunter was not identified.

When the DEC officials arrived, they confirmed the doe to be a red deer, weighing roughly 175 pounds.

DEC spokesman Benning Delamater said Agriculture and Markets investigators “found no indication of its origin.” He added: “All facilities in the area known to have red deer in captivity were contacted and accounted for.”

Native to Europe and parts of Asia, red deer were introduced to parts of the U.S. in the 1930s. There are red deer in captivity in the U.S. today.

Dalamater said, “A loose red deer in the population is a problem because it could potentially present a disease risk to New York’s native whitetail herd, especially when the deer’s history is unknown.”

The DEC’s goal, “is to remove every red deer encountered and test these animals for chronic wasting disease,” Delamater said. “Test results for this deer are being determined.”

Cattaraugus County Legislature leadership expected to change

There appear to be changes ahead for the Cattaraugus County Legislature bipartisan coalition leadership.

After the death in January of chair Paula Stockman, a coalition of five Democrats and four Republicans elected Republican James J. Snyder of Olean chairman and Democrat Susan Labuhn of Salamanca vice chairman.

The Republican caucus had been expected to elect Majority Leader Donna Vickman, R-Farmersville, to the chairman’s seat. The five Democrats instead struck a deal with four Republicans to elect Snyder chairman and Labuhn vice chairman.

That stuck in the craw of some Republicans, who pushed Republican Party Chairman Robert Keis Sr., to turn up the heat on Republican legislators to support Republicans for leadership.

Republicans control 12 of the 17 County Legislature seats.

Keis sent a letter in recent months to Republican lawmakers cautioning them against continuing to support a Democrat, Labuhn, for vice chairman.

The vice chairman is also chairman of the key Finance Committee.

The changes expected in the leadership when the County Legislature convenes Jan. 2 at 4 p.m. are not good news for Labuhn.

Sources indicated to the Olean Times Herald that Labuhn would be replaced as vice chairman by another member of the bipartisan coalition, Dan Hale, R-Portville.

The news is good for Snyder, who will be serving his last year under term limits. The Olean Republican said Friday he expects to be re-elected chairman in January.

“I hope it will be unanimous,” Snyder said of the vote for chairman.

“I get along well with Democrats.

We’ll see what happens.”

The only question, Snyder said, “is who will be vice chairman.”

Labuhn, Snyder said, “is probably one of the most engaged legislators we have down there. She’s done a real good job. Sue has been fun to work with. We work very well together.

I’m looking forward to working with her regardless if she is elected vice chairman.”

Snyder said he hopes the bipartisan coalition stays intact. Hale is a member of that coalition along with Republicans Joseph Snyder of Ischua and Frank Higgins of Olean.

Higgins had come under pressure to peel off from the bipartisan coalition and some Republicans had urged him to seek the chairmanship, promising him enough votes to unseat Snyder.

On Friday, Higgins confirmed he had gotten some Republican calls to leave the bipartisan coalition and run for chairman, but he politely declined.

“I support Jim Snyder for chairman,” he explained.

Keis, who met with Republican legislators a few weeks ago, reminded them the Republican Committee “was very, very, very upset. They do all the work passing petitions, putting up signs for them and supporting them financially. They worked their asses of to get a super majority. Then they end up with a Democrat in the leadership and chairman of the Finance Committee.”

He emphasized the Republican Committee was not telling the legislators who to put in as vice chairman. “Just that it needs to be a Republican,” Keis added.

The Republican chairman agreed the County Legislature has been well run financially for the past several years, including the past year with Labuhn as vice chairman and chairman of the Finance Committee.

Is Keis confident that a Republican will again be the County Legislature vice chairman?

“Republicans have come together as a group,” Keis said. If the bipartisan coalition isn’t dead after next week (the last County Legislature meeting is Wednesday) some Republican Party committee members “will be extremely upset.”

Of course, he added, “I can’t promise you anything until the votes are cast. I’m not dictating anything.”

Keis called the bipartisan coalition “hogwash.” Talk of primaries for Republicans who supported the bipartisan coalition was an indication of how upset some Republicans were at the time, he said.

Snyder and Vickman are termlimited, meaning at the end of next year they will have served 12 consecutive years — three four-year

terms — and cannot serve again for at least two years.

Only one Democrat, Minority Leader John Padlo of Olean, is termlimited next year.

All 17 seats on the County Legislature will be up for election in November 2019.

Labuhn said she will support Snyder’s bid for re-election as chairman. “I’m willing to stay on as vice chairman,” she said. ”If the votes aren’t there, they’re not there.

That’s too bad, but it’s politics. I support what we did and I support Mr. Snyder.”

Labuhn said, “We had a good transition this year and the budget process went very well.” As vice chairman, Labuhn served as Finance Committee chairman. As minority leader she previously served as Finance Committee vice chairman under Snyder.

If, as it appears, Labuhn is out as vice chairman next year, would she like to return to the minority leader’s post assumed by Padlo when she became vice chairman?

“If someone else in our caucus can do as good or better” Labuhn said she would consider supporting another candidate. If she’s not going to be elected vice chairman, she would like to go back to being the minority leader, she said.

“I took on the minority leader’s post because I thought I could do a good job,” Labuhn said. “I know how to work with everyone involved.”

Cattaraugus County Democratic Party Chairman Frank Puglisi of Lyndon said the Democratic Committee “fully supports Sue Labuhn for vice chairman. We think she’s done a phenomenal job. There should be no reason to change.”

If Republicans keep Labuhn from the vice chairmanship, Puglisi said he would support her for minority leader.

The bipartisan coalition, Puglisi said, “has been working well. Things have been getting done in the county.”

For Republicans to work for the party and their political gain “is unacceptable,” Puglisi said.”If you have to threaten your party’s legislators and attack them for doing what they thought was the best interest of the county — that’s unacceptable.”
