GRIFFIS SCULPTURE PARK UNVEILED 50 YEARS AGO

Village Square, the current museum site has been the location of the County Clerk’s Office, a bank, a German Protestant Lutheran Church and a millinery shop.

“One thing we have set up in the history museum around the dresses is the white noise going and we actually have magnetic tape doing the recording,” deGuehery said. “We did a number of digital recordings last year and they did end up presenting some sounds.”

Frank said because of the increased attendance despite the weather, the historical society is already planning on trying for a third ghost hunt in 2019.

The group made recordings in the upstairs court and conference rooms, the back staircase and the back parking lot where the jail would have stood. Hunters asked questions about debates, court cases, hangings and prisoners, some of which spiked the recorders’ activity.

Some of the most visual evidence of awakened spirits came at the United Church of Ellicottville on Elizabeth Street. Constructed in 1829 as the United Church of Christ, the church merged with the Free Presbyterian in 1976.

“From what John has told me, ghosts have a lifespan of maybe 200 or 250 years, so we were in a pretty good parameter here,” deGuehery said.

On the hunt, Koerner and deGuehery used several methods to detect any activity, such as recordings and photography and by using mandrake to awaken the spirits.

The group visited a couple gravesites that produced some sounds on recorders and strange images on pictures, such as orbs, shadows and one with a deformed face.

The next stop on the hunt was the Ellicottville Town Hall, located in the northwest corner of the village square. Constructed in 1829, replacing a log courthouse and jail built in 1820, this building once served as the Center of Cattaraugus County Government.

In 1868, the county seat moved to Little Valley, so the town purchased the building to use as the Town Hall. Until the turn of the 20th century, plays, concerts, lectures and other forms of entertainment were held on a stage installed on the second floor.

A fire heavily damaged the building in 1969.

John Koerner and Rob deGuehery, of Paranormal Walks, guided the group along with officials with the historical society through several historic sites within the village, explaining some history and looking for any paranormal activity along the way.

“I think it was really cool,” said Ellen Frank, vice president of the historical society. “We had a few more people this year,” Frank said.

“The weather probably held off some people.”

The night began at the Ellicottville Gazebo where interested ghost hunters gathered to go over what the hunt would include.

“John likes to say ghosts like to attach themselves to items,” deGuehery said. “They might follow an object or an item that was very close to them.”

Throughout the hunt, the group visited the town hall, historical society building, the United Church of Ellicottville and the Jefferson Street Cemetery, which had the most history and potential ghost activity and was both the first and final stop in the hunt.

“This year we added the church and the cemetery because last year we just did the town hall and the museum,” Frank said.

Established in 1817, the Jefferson Street Cemetery was the first to serve the village. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

A NEW TRADITION TAKES THE FIELD AT ECS A new tradition takes the field at ECS

CLEANUP CONTINUES AFTER FLOODING IN ECS BASEMENT

By Kellen M. Quigley Managing Editor ELLICOTTVILLE — After a torrential downpour and insufficient drainage at Ellicottville Central School led to flooding over Columbus Day weekend, the cleanup process in the north end basement continues.

During their regular Board of Education meeting Oct. 9, members of the board and district officials toured where most of the damage was done in the basement of the elementary school section of the campus.

“We’ve had the dehumidifiers on for the past week and we’re still monitoring to try to figure out

the situation,” said Superintendent Robert Miller said Tuesday. “We want to get everything dry down there before we jump to any rash decisions.”

Miller said because the cleanup process was ongoing, no damage estimates had been made yet.

On Oct. 6 and 7, heavy storms lead to several inches of water flooding school grounds, which in turn made its way to the building and into the ground-level windows in the basement, Miller explained, some of which are five inches off the ground.

“It was just so much water so fast that the drainage out by the driveway couldn’t handle that much that quickly,” he said.

In some of the classrooms, water

cascaded over the windowsills and down bookshelves, storage and heating units along the outer walls,

Miller said.

Water also entered through an exit door as well as leaking through the bottoms of doors and into the hallway.

“When there was no more rain, the low points filled in, and unfortunately they come up against the school,” he added.

Pre-K, fourth-grade and fifth-grade classrooms and the Committee on Special Education office saw the most damage for rooms where kids would be, Miller said. They had been temporarily moved to

other locations on campus, he

said.

According to Matt Lemmens, water manager of Servpro, the company who attended to the cleanup, the water receded into cracks in the floor where flooding occurred, so substantial amounts remained under the floor and could lead to mold.

“We ended up pulling up a little bit (of floor) so we could check it out because the meters were showing it was wet underneath,” Lemmens said. “All along the seam areas, there’s water in there.”

Lemmens said the only way to remove the water and sanitize the area would be to remove the flooring, many of which were covered in vinyl or carpet, as well as addressing the bottoms of the walls.

“When the water came in, it was only about an inch-and-a-half to two

inches deep … but the water is sucked up the wall like a sponge to about 18 inches here,” he explained.

For the cleanup process, Lemmens said his team would remove all the flooring that was flooded down to the concrete base to make sure its dry and then spray an antimicrobial spray to make sure the area is clean.

“It is a lot of square footage,” he said. “The processes goes fairly quickly once we get the right equipment in here and the right amount of staff to do it.”

Over the past week, Servpro crews have been in the school, removing floors and drying out the spaces, Miller said.

He said

As cleanup is completed, Miller said he plans to have a couple meetings to see what’s next.

“I don’t have any big decision to say, ‘we’re doing this,’ or ‘we’re doing that,’ because we’re still trying to figure everything out,” he added.

Village Planning Board Discusses Residential Projects

By Caitlin Croft The October meeting of the Village Planning Board opened with two public hearings.

The first, regarding PB2018-11, a single family home to be located at 22 Fillmore Drive. This is a 3,200 square foot, 1½ story home. This is an allowed use in the Medium Density District and no Special Use Permit is required.

All setbacks, floor to area ratio and open space requirements have been met. This fits the character and nature of the subdivision and all materials are allowed.

There were a few small changes such as changing the siding from vertical to horizontal, a change to the placement of one window and the board asked the applicant to use fewer trim materials.

There was no one in

attendance to speak regarding the matter from the public and no correspondences or calls had been received.

The second public hearing was regarding PB-2018-12, an addition to 8-10 Washington Street.

This project consists of a 184-square-foot addition to the rear, period correct railing on the balcony, canopies to be removed and updates to the rear residential entrance. There will be one door modification and the lobby entrance will be modified. There will be no parking changes.

There was a referral to the county and their response that the project was consistent with the County-Wide Design Plan and there are no significant county-wide or community impacts.

There was no one in attendance to speak regarding the matter

from the public and no correspondences or calls had been received.

The meeting turned back to 22 Fillmore Drive. There was no further discussion or questions from the planning board.

There was a motion to declare this a Type 2 Action under the State Environment Quality Review (SEQR); a second and ayes carried. There was a motion to approve the Architectural Design Review and Site Plan; a second and ayes carried.

Regarding 8-10 Washington Street, all standards for the Historical District Review have been met or are not applicable.

The village planner advised this project would enhance the building. There was a motion to make a negative declaration under SEQR as this is a Type 1 Action; there

was a second and ayes carried. There was a motion to approve the Site Plan, Historical District Review and Architectural Design Review; a second and ayes carried.

In new business, there is a proposed medical office at 5 Park Square. This would be a first-floor office with residence on the second floor. A handicap ramp and exterior exit from the second floor would be added. The Village Residential District in the Village Commercial District bounds this property.

There is an issue with side yard setbacks and the applicant will need to obtain a zoning variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals. Next, there was a motion that the Planning Board allows the village Planner to recommend to the Village Board waives

the parking requirement for this project because it is in the Historical District. There was a motion to set the Public Hearing for Nov. 13 at 5:30 p.m.

Next was a proposed new porch on 20 West Washington, a residential home that is within the Historical District. This project will consist of enclosing the side porch and adding a rear deck. All setbacks have been met and no Public Hearing is required. There was a motion to declare this a Type 2 Action under SEQR; a second and ayes carried. There was a motion to approve the Architectural Design Review and Historical District Review; there were a second and ayes carried.

There was an application for proposed exterior renovations to 25 West Washington Street. This

includes new steps and sidewalk to front door.

The sidewalk would consist of shale and river stone of choice, replace the steps remove the center rail and have open riser of choice. All standards have been met. There was a motion to declare this a Type 2 Action under SEQR; a second and ayes carried. There was a motion to approve the Architectural Design Review and Historical District Review; there was a second and ayes carried.

There was a motion to approve the minutes from the September 2018 meeting with a couple minor changes; a second and ayes carried.

The next meeting of the Village Planning Board will be Nov.13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Village/Town Hall.

“Holy Ghost”

Chris was born Nov. 4, 1951, to Helen and Clair File of Dowagiac, Mich.

Chris retired from Tolco Corporation in June 2017 after 39 years of service.

Within weeks of his retirement, Chris was diagnosed with brain cancer, the disease that would take his life. During the final year of his life, he visited with the family he loved so much. In May, he proudly walked his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.

Chris loved outdoor activities fly-fishing, bicycling, hiking and snowshoeing. He designed and built a country home in Ellicottville, N.Y.

Ellicott Street Zoning, Tower Laws Expected to Change WOOD PELLETS

“If you notice when you go on Ellicott Street there’s some double-wide or modular homes here and there,” said Town Supervisor Dan Brown.

“The way the zoning is right now, there are places where you can and can’t have them, even right across the street from each other.”

According to Brown, several people have approached the town in recent years wanting to put in new manufactured homes on Ellicott Street, but they haven’t been able to.

Great Valley Code Officer Rich Rinko said he’s been advocating changing the zoning for a while, precisely because the wording in the town zoning law can be confusing.

Although the street begins in the city of Salamanca, the north end of Ellicott Street is in the town of Great Valley. Rinko said the town’s zoning laws previously did not allow manufactured and double-wide homes in that area due to its classification as a rural residential zone.

“In some zones, it’s allowed, and in some zones, it’s not,” said Chris Schena, chair of the town’s planning and zoning boards. According to Schena, there are three zones in the Ellicott Street area: rural residential, commercial and hamlet residential/commercial (HRC).

“We thought it would be better if we combine the rural residential with the hamlet residential

This exercise works your upper back as well as your neck muscles.

Leg Lift In a standing position, lift your left leg while keeping your knee bent so that your thigh is perpendicular with the ground. Then, use one or both hands to push your thigh down while continuing to lift it upward. Switch legs and repeat the exercise on the opposite side.

Are you hooked yet? Once you get used to building these mini-workouts into your day, the motions will start to come naturally.

Besides these suggested exercises, you can think up many more of your own.

The most effective way to use isometrics is to

incorporate it into a larger strength-training program. Although isometric exercises offer an important contribution to your workout efforts, they do have some limitations.

For one, each isometric contraction only increases muscular strength in the exact position that you're practicing, not through a whole range of motion.

It is therefore best to think about isometrics as a complement to your weight training, not a substitute for it.

And, what’s great about either of theses fitness options, body weight training and isometric training, is that the risk of injury is low. So, if you are afraid of weights (or poles)- this is a great way to get and stay fit.

By Kim Duke Throughout my many years in the fitness industry, I have seen many trends come and go in the fitness community. Some, like pole dancing, have a shelf life of a loaf of white bread— it seems like it will last a while, and then one day it is covered in mold and is thrown away.

However, some trends actually gain popularity with time since they are effective and efficient and not so flashy.

One of those trends is body weight training. It’s easy to see why no-equipment workouts are so popular: They’re relatively easy to learn, they can be modified to suit any ability level, and they can be done just about anywhere. Plus,

body weight exercises are a great way to get fit for free.

(That’s probably why this method has been ranked highly in fitness surveys since 2013.) Push-ups and pull-ups are classic bodyweight moves, but there are plenty more to choose from like squats, lunges and planks, just to name a few.

Another fitness trend that has been around literally for thousands of years, is called isometrics (it’s true, I Googled it!). Isometrics is a type of strength training in which your muscle length doesn't change when you contract your muscle.

Unlike standard strength training, isometrics is done in a static position instead of moving through a range of motion--which means you can practice isometrics

anywhere without needing weights or special equipment. Fitness experts say that it only takes about 10 seconds to effectively perform one isometric exercise and, in some cases, no one will even know you're doing it.

To give you an idea of what an isometric exercise looks like, think about pushing against an immovable object, such as a wall or signpost, or trying to open a window that won't budge.

This allows your muscles to receive isometric exercise even though you're not moving the wall, post, or window. In other words, your muscles can get exercise just by trying to move something that offers this level of resistance.

So how exactly can you do isometrics? There are

almost limitless options for working your muscles in this way. Here are some specific isometric exercises to try that take just 10 seconds a few times a day: Core Engagement While sitting in a chair, deliberately tighten your stomach muscles, and hold your feet an inch or two above the floor. To increase the resistance, push your knees down toward the floor with your hands while trying to keep your feet from touching the floor.

Neck Strengthener From a seated or standing position, clasp your hands behind your head, pulling your elbows out wide. Then try to push your head back using your neck muscles, while simultaneously trying to

WEST VALLEY — Dave Cobo has been farming on Edies Road in the town of Ashford most of his 77 years.

He grew up on a farm.

After leaving the Army and working for a farm equipment repair shop, he took up dairy farming in his early 20s.

“I’ve been farming ever since,” he said while combining corn on a 20-acre field down Edies Road.

Over the noise of the combine, Cobo talks about farming In 2002, he sold his dairy cows and has been planting, harvesting and selling grain crops. Most of his harvest goes to the local feed mill.

This year he planted about 200 acres of corn. The combine goes through five rows of corn like a knife through hot butter. The corn cobs are picked and stripped of their leaves and silk below the front window of the combine. Next, grain comes pouring into the bin behind the cab.

“It’s a good yield on this field,” Cobo observes.

He measures the yield by how far back down the field he gets before having to return to the road to transfer another 110 bushels of corn to a waiting truck.

Larry Griffis Jr., the creator and visionary of both the Griffis Sculpture Park and the Essex Art Center of Buffalo, grew up in Buffalo. He was always an artist but did not dedicate himself to the arts until later in life, according to Nila Griffis Lampman, executive director of the park.

After fighting in World War II, starting a family and running a successful hosiery company, Griffis decided to leave his life in Buffalo and move to Rome to learn bronze casting.

Griffis already had the commission for the “Spirit of Womanhood,” which gave a decided focus and urgency for his move and work there. It was in Italy, amongst the ancient ruins of Hadrian’s Villa, where Griffis was inspired to create the first outdoor sculpture park.

As his children played throughout the sculptural ruins set in a beautiful landscape, he realized the importance of physical interaction with artwork in an always changing natural

A 350-acre hilltop was “ablaze with autumnal colors and the talents of poets, ballet dancers folk singers and community theater groups.”

The occasion for this outdoor romp of grassroots culture in Cattaraugus County was the “Octoberfest” at which the Ashford Hollow Foundation unveiled Griffis Sculpture Park to some 2,000 people on this weekend 50 years ago.

“Mother Nature, an undisputed artist in her own right, dipped into her warmest fall colors to paint a lush setting while a bright golden sun provided shirtsleeves weather,” the Olean Times Herald reported in its Oct. 14, 1968, edition.

The backup of traffic up the winding, dirt road to the site was tedious, but once at the top, “the fans of art were ushered into a Shangri-La of nude aluminum bathers and a variegated garden of steel abstract forms.”

Makeshift stages on an open, sloping hillside were used for a five-part program by the Empire State Ballet Co., facades and jazz suit excerpts by the Seenie Rothier Dance Co. scenes from “The Glass Menagerie” by the Springville Workshop and a short play, “Grenade on Avenue B,” presented by the Theater Group from Buffalo under the direction of Guy Griffis, whose works adorn the park.

SALAMANCA — Singers interested in joining the Cantata Choir, directed by Annette Ieda, can attend the group’s first rehearsal of the season from 1:15–3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21 at the First United Congregational Methodist Church on 134 Broad Street.

Locations for rehearsals will alternate between the United Congregational Methodist Church and the United Church of Ellicottville on Elizabeth St. The final rehearsal will be at the Holy Name of Mary Church in Ellicottville.

Music and CDs will be given out at the first couple rehearsals. Participants are asked to attend at least five of the eight rehearsals.

The concerts will be held Sunday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. in Salamanca and at 7 p.m. at the Holy Name of Mary Church.
