Gowanda Sports Report

BY BILL PEGLOWSKI GOWANDA — The Gowanda Varsity boys basketball team hosted North Collins for a scrimmage Dec. 13. After the game was tied several times, Gowanda pulled into a 13-8 lead. It would be their biggest advantage of the game. North Collins came back to claim a 17-13 lead after one quarter. After a hard fought second quarter it was 2927. North Collins pulled away with a 18-point third quarter increasing their lead to a seven-point margin. Gowanda managed to tighten things in the final quarter, but still fell four points short. The final Gowanda basket, with just two seconds left, brought the final score to 57-53.

John Ondus led Gowanda with 12 points. Quentin Centner was right behind with 11 points. Tyler Smith and John Smuda finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

Gowanda traveled to Frewsburg on Dec. 16.

In a high scoring game, Gowanda came up short by a score of 78-70. With five 3-point baskets and a total of 20 points, Quentin Centner led the team. John Smuda (11 points) and Tyler Smith (10 points) were right behind. John Ondus and Blake Herman each contributed eight points.

The Gowanda Varsity girls basketball team hosted Pine Valley on Dec. 16.

After building a 9-7 lead at the end of the first quar-

ter, the team fell cold in the second. Despite managing just four points in the quarter, Gowanda was able to hold on for a 13-12 lead at halftime. In the second half, Gowanda began to pull away. Autumn Nephew had the only 3-point basket for Gowanda in the third quarter helping the team move their lead to 22-18. Gowanda finished big with an 11-point fourth quarter leading to a final score of 33-25. Crissa Scanlan was top scorer for Gowanda with 14 points.

Gao:wisa:s Stevens and Aailyah Stevens each had six points.

The Gowanda boys bowling team hosted Franklinville Dec. 13. The boys took all three games and high total score for a 4-0 win. Leading Gowanda was Kenny Steklasa with games of 175, 174 and 206 for a 555 series. Other Gowanda bowlers in the 500s were Johnny Smuda (177-185-187/549) and Drew Shull (201-215-133/549).

The Gowanda/Cattaraugus-Little Valley wrestling team hosted Falconer on Dec. 14. The team lost the home opener by a score of 61-6. Wrestling at 172, Benjamin Krajewski saved Gowanda from being shut out in the final match of the night. He pinned Falconer’s Kyle Keefe in 2:36.

The team did much better the next day at Olean-Allegany/Limestone taking a 46-27 victory. Gowanda wrestlers gaining wins in the match include: at 102,

The Eden/Gowanda swimming team hosted Pioneer on Dec. 14 for a 61-40 win. Eden’s Cody Gemza and Gowanda’s Hayden Kaus and Christian Merrill went double gold for eight points to lead all scorers. Gemza’s wins came in the 1M Diving and 100Y Freestyle (55.49) events. For Merrill, it was the 200Y Individual Medley (2:39.04) and 100Y Backstroke (1:09.03).

Kaus won the 200Y Freestyle (2:13.45) and 500Y Freestyle (6:07.75). Merrill teamed up with Jacob Zittel, Aiden Dietzen and Patrick Schmitz for a first in the 200Y Medley Relay (2:16.78). In the 200Y Freestyle Relay, Gemza and Kaus joined Brayden Timblin and Aiden Dietzen for a first in 1:48.26. Additionally, the team of Gemza, Kaus, Merrill and Timblin got Eden a win in the 400Y Freestyle Relay (4:12.03).

Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater restoration project reaches completion ERIE COUNTY, NY –The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning has announced the completion of a twelve-year restoration effort at Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater, a community icon that has been fully restored and is once again ready to greet the public for movies and with rentable space for groups.

The restoration project began in 2009 with funding primarily supplied

by NYS but also by Erie County through $590,000 of Community Development Block Grant (“CDBG”) funding.

Improvements completed with CDBG funds through Erie County included roof and wall restoration, re-pointing mortar on brick, entrance restoration HVAC mechanical upgrades, installation of ADA-compliant bathrooms, installation of ductwork for the main theater HVAC system, and renovations to the historic lobby including painting, plaster work, and mechanical upgrades. Additional work included the repair and upgrade of the theater’s existing marquee to restore it to its historical accuracy, along with related electrical work to the build-

tions in community centers across Erie County and this is another great example of a project that does just that,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz.

“These investments help to reinvigorate neighborhoods and business districts, adding vitality that brings residents and customers to the area. Together we are building a better Erie County for the future.”

2021 has been a year of renewed hope, transition, and continued learning as we all find ways to meet new challenges.

For the Chamber of Commerce, the new year began with a joint annual meeting with the Manufacturers Association of the Southern Tier via Zoom, with words of encouragement from our then Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. Her words resonated when she noted, “We can all be proud of our state and our region for stepping up.

Our business community, especially here in Chautauqua County, is tough and flexible.” She was right.

Our business community has done an extraordinary job through almost two years now of dealing with pandemic stresses.

February saw a first in decades as the Mayville-Chautauqua Community Chamber was forced to call off its annual Winter Festival due to health concerns. This coming year the festival will be back at Lakeside Park on Presidents Day Weekend with planning already underway for many of the traditional events.

2021 was the year the Doors Open Jamestown scavenger hunt went all online as residents viewed videos about our numerous local attractions to search for visual clues and enter the contest. The Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce is already working on the return to an in-person Doors Open Jamestown this coming January.

The spring season brought a huge wave of optimism as COVID vaccines became available and residents jockeyed online to get an appointment. Kudos to the Chautauqua County Health Department for stepping up to make so many clinics available in order to get local people vaccinated and back to business.

The early run on vaccines led to a summer season that felt nearly “normal” again: with many local events returning.

Chautauqua Institution was once again able to put patrons in the seats at its Amphitheater and in a temporary tented theater venue near the lake. In May the Chamber re-started its popular Business After Hours networking events with a special beach party at Sunset Bay co-hosted by the Hanover, Dunkirk, and Fredonia Community Chambers.

In August the Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce brought back the popular Downtown Cruise-In with a new focus on driving traffic into local businesses.

This fall the Chamber has worked to continue Business After Hours with networking events at Lake

Shore Center for the Arts in Westfield and at Chautauqua Suites in Mayville.

In addition, the Chamber of Commerce has resumed its periodic Tuesday Talks sessions – an informational panel discussion on a variety of topics pertinent to all businesses. Notably this fall, we were able to hold our annual Chamber Awards Banquet once again at the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia, paying tribute to some of the outstanding people and organizations who truly make Chautauqua County a great place to live and work. In addition, our Annual Meeting for this year was held in person, with an opportunity to view online as well, at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel where we welcomed the presidents of our two SUNY institutions: Dr. Daniel DeMarte and Dr. Stephen Kolison, who unveiled a new collaborative effort aimed at offering a bachelors degree on the community college campus in Jamestown.

Throughout the pandemic, and with a special push over the past month, the Chamber has focused on a key point in its mission: driving consumers to local businesses. As we have encouraged one and all to find the joy in Christmas shopping again, we know of no better way to do that than by supporting small locally owned businesses that truly create the fabric of our community. We are so fortunate to have numerous entrepreneurs in our county, operating niche retail locations, a wide variety of restaurants, and artisans who make and sell high quality and unique items.

The Chamber has re-branded its popular gift card this year as the ShopLocalCHQ Gift Card, which can be used at more than 140 local merchants countywide for everything from food and wine to books, clothing, and home goods. In addition, we have maintained our ShopLocalCHQ online marketplace featuring more than 70 local small merchants and over 300 products for sale.

Businesses unquestionably face numerous challenges in this continued pandemic environment:

masking, vaccinations, mandates, labor shortages, retirements, and much more. The Chamber of Commerce remains steadfast in its goal to help cut through the noise around all of this and provide accurate and important communication, tools to help build and maintain a customer base and easily deal with human resource needs, health and ancillary insurance products, vital connections with other businesspeople, and crucial partnerships with other local organizations that help build a stronger business community for all.

For me, personally, the past six months have been a growth experience as I have settled into this new role as President and CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce. We have developed a solid team to serve our businesses and communities. I look forward to continue meeting our members and community partners across Chautauqua County in 2022.

Erie County offers masks to area Houses of Worship for use and distribution through the end of the year ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Health and Live Well Erie are extending an offer to houses of worship countywide to place orders for masks for use at holiday services and distribution to their worship communities.

With many houses of worship expecting crowded services this holiday season, this offer for masks is intended to give an added layer of pro-

tection against respiratory illness, including COVID-19 and flu. It also supports the New York State and Erie County mask mandates for indoor public places.

Churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and other faith communities can place orders using an online form at: https://bit.ly/ECMasks2021.

Orders will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis through the end of 2021.

“Breakfast with Santa” raises donations for Ellicottville food pantry ELLICOTTVILLE - Each year restaurants in the village of Ellicottville take turns putting on a pancake breakfast with Santa. Over the course of Christmas in Ellicottville’s breakfast at Finnerty’s and the following morning at Villaggio, children and their families got a chance to talk to the Jolly Old Elf one more time before Christmas to express their wants for under the tree.

These breakfasts raised

donations for the Ellicottville Food Pantry in the form of non-perishable food items and cash donations.

This year, on top of all the food donations (and there were a lot!), the Food Pantry received a check for $783.00 from donations received at the door.

Thanks to the staff at both Villaggio and Finnerty’s for donating their time as well as Sysco for donating the food and Tops Markets for the plates, utensils and 25 gallons of OJ. A special thanks to all who donated cash and food items.

Times Beach Nature Preserve closed following last weekend’s windy weather ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry (“Parks”) has announced the closure of the Times Beach Nature Preserve after last weekend’s (December 11-12) windy weather and the seiche it created caused damage to the Preserve’s trails, creating safety concerns and forcing the Preserve’s closure to the public. This is the latest of several weather-related closures of Times Beach due to seiche events since the October 2019 storm. The Federal

Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”) recently approved two projects at the site related to that storm that will aid in the removal of debris and replacement of some of the Preserve’s boardwalk, which has all been destroyed.

Additionally, a $500,000 grant from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (“DASNY”) State Municipal Facilities Program was secured in late 2018 by then-NYS Assemblyman (now NYS Senator, 60th District) Sean Ryan for capital

improvements to the site.

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning and the Friends of Times Beach prepared the successful application. The funding will now be applied to a Coastal Resiliency Study being prepared to better protect the site from future seiche damage.

“The Times Beach Nature Preserve is a beautiful but fragile ecosystem and is highly vulnerable to bad weather, due to its location.

The site has taken a beating over the past few years from

wind and waves every time we have severe weather and has been either partly or fully closed at various times during that span,” said Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Forestry Troy P. Schinzel. “For safety reasons we will now be closing Times Beach until further notice.

In the spring our Department plans to work with the Friends of Times Beach to explore clean ups that could result in certain trails within Times Beach being opened to the public once again. I also want to thank NYS Senator

Ryan for helping to secure this grant funding, which will be critical to protecting times beach in the future.”

“In 2018, we secured $500,000 in DASNY funding to pay for much-needed capital improvement projects at Times Beach Nature Preserve. After a series of destructive storms that have

necessitated its closure, the site’s priorities have shifted dramatically,” said NYS Senator Sean Ryan. “As we work to ensure that Times Beach can reopen safely, using the DASNY money to fund a coastal resiliency study will help protect it from sustaining damage of this magnitude in the future.”

Erie County Department Of Health adds testing for Influenza and RSV to Covid-19 testing ERIE COUNTY, NY – The Erie County Public Health Lab has added testing for influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to the COVID-19 PCR testing offered through the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH).

With the Erie County Public Health Lab’s new molecular diagnostic testing technology, all samples collected for a COVID-19 PCR diagnostic test through ECDOH will also be tested for influenza A, influenza B and RSV from the same swab.

“RSV, influenza and COVID-19 can cause similar respiratory symptoms.

For people who are sick and want to know if one of these diseases is responsible for their illness, testing through ECDOH can detect each of these viruses,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein. “This ‘multiplex’ testing was made possible through an investment in our Public Health Lab equipment. Our public health laboratorians and technicians have done considerable work to calibrate the equipment and prepare

it for expanded use.”

Individuals with a positive COVID-19 test result will be called by a case investigator with instructions on how to isolate and reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission in their household.

Individuals with a positive RSV or influenza test result will be called and instructed

to talk to their doctor’s office or an urgent care facility about treatment options or medical care. All individuals will be notified of their results within 1-3 business days.

The rapid COVID-19 diagnostic tests offered to symptomatic k-12 students and symptomatic k-12

school staff use a different test platform, and do not detect those other viruses.
