sis to exempt COVID-related layoffs from being used against small businesses in the calculation of unemployment insurance rates finally saw that issue addressed,” Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, said. The senator said GOP calls for small business relief contributed to the inclusion of approximately $1 billion in grants and tax credits in the state budget, which will aid the recovery.
While state Sen. George Borrello was disappointed that Democrats never considered revoking the governor’s pandemic emergency powers before the end of the 2021 legislative session this past Friday, he did point to some wins in the session. “After the devastation that our small businesses experienced during the pandemic and our state-imposed lockdown, those of us who Borrello continued on ............... page 5 fought throughout the cri-

game was called early under the 10-run rule at that point. John Smuda had 3RBIs and scored three runs for Gowanda. Gavin Phillips added two triples and three runs to the effort. The Gowanda Varsity girls softball team hosted Fredonia June 7. After giving up five runs to Fredonia in the 1st inning, Cameron Nagel singled for Gowanda. Zoey Kota followed that with a double that brought Nagel home. Kota, in turn, scored on an Abby Valone single. The attack then stalled leaving the score 5-2 after one inning. Fredonia added a run in the 2nd inning and two more in the 4th. In that 4th inning, Hailey Fort singled for Gowanda. She later scored on an Ella Luther single. That brought the score to 8-3. It stayed that way into the 7th inning when Fredonia upped their total to nine. In the bottom of the inning, Lily Bobseine led off with a double. Another Cameron Nagel single allowed Bobseine to score, but that all that Gowanda could manage. The final score was 9-4 in favor of Fredonia. On June 8, the team hosted Forestville. Gowanda opened the scoring with a single run and the score remained 1-0 through the 2nd inning. In the 3rd, on one out, Addison Kota got things going for Gowanda
The Gowanda Panthers Varsity baseball team opened their week June 8 hosting Dunkirk. Gowanda opened up an early 1-0 first inning lead with a John Ondus RBI triple. Dunkirk came right back in the 2nd, scoring three times. It was Gowanda’s turn again in a 3rd inning that saw six Panthers walked. They scored a total of four runs in the inning to bring the score to 5-3. Dunkirk owned the 4th inning pulling ahead 6-5. That score held until the bottom of the 6th inning when a single Panthers run would tie the score at 6 going into the final inning. Gowanda was only able to counter one of two Dunkirk runs in the inning falling short 8-7. On June 9, the team hosted Randolph at Panther Park. Gowanda used a 5-0 first inning to take control of the game. Randolph closed the gap to 6-2 in the next inning. The game remained scoreless from that point as Gowanda emerged with a win. Gowanda raised their CCAA record to 5-1 with a win at Brocton on June 11. Scoring all of their 14 runs in the opening inning, Gowanda shut out Brocton for a 14-0 final. John Ondus recorded nine strikeouts in four innings pitched. Blake Herman added two strikeouts in the 5th inning for a combined no-hitter. The Sports Report continued on ..... page 4
