Gowanda Sports Report

Exploration in acrylic paint skins and beyond at SCA SPRINGVILLE — Westfield artist Trenton Lutes utilizes a unique way of presenting photography that makes viewers feel as if they have stepped into another realm.

The medium of acrylic paint skin with photographic transfer involves applying paint to a non-stick surface,

carefully scraping it off, then transferring an image onto the paint skin using a gel medium. The transparent and translucent properties of the gel create works that allow light to filter through, even when hung on a wall.

“I feel that with these

pieces I can best highlight the surrounding beauty… and also draw the viewer into the piece itself, making them feel as if they might be standing right in the very location in which I took the photographs,” said Lutes.

Lutes was a recipient of an “Artist in Community” Grant, administered

by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council on behalf of the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program in 2017.

His project featured work in this unique medium.

The Panthers got in trouble early giving up two 1st inning walks and a single loading the bases with two outs.

A third walk would score an initial run for Orchard Park.

In the bottom of the inning, three straight Gowanda batters failed to reach 1st base ending the inning at 1-0. A 2nd inning walk followed by two batters hit by a pitch loaded the bases with Orchard Park runners again.

By the end of the inning they had increased their lead to 5-0. Behind 9-0, Gowanda finally scored in the 6th inning. A John Smuda RBI single amid four walks brought the score to 9-1. Smuda had another RBI single in the final inning to bring the final score to 9-2.

— The Gowanda Varsity softball team faced West Seneca West in Panther Park on May 24. Gowanda got off to a slow start giving up four runs in the 1st inning while failing to venture past first base themselves. In the 2nd inning, Ella Luther scored to get Gowanda on the board 4-1. West Seneca moved the gap back to 5-1 in the 3rd inning. They added six more in the 4th. The score remained 11-1 until the 6th inning.

While West Seneca padded their lead with two additional runs, Gowanda added a run of their own as Abigale Valone scored. Gao:wisa:s Stevens was credited with RBI’s on both Gowanda runs.

The Gowanda Varsity baseball team hosted Springville/West Valley for a non-league game Monday, May 24. In the opening inning, Springville’s second player to bat, Austin Boies, blasted a triple down the 1st base line. The next batter, Keaton Wnuk, brought him home with an RBI double. Gowanda’s batters went down with three straight outs to end the inning 1-0 in favor of Springville.

Springville added two more runs in the second inning putting the Panthers down by three as they came up to bat again. After Gowanda’s first batter was walked, John Smuda hit a triple to bring him home. Three more runs were added to put Gowanda ahead 4-3. That score held until the 4th inning when Gowanda added another three runs moving their total to seven. A final Springville run was added in the 6th inning. Gowanda ended their first win at the new Panther Park by a score of 7-4.

The team traveled to Randolph on May 26. Gowanda got in front fast with a 3-run 1st inning. In the 4th, Randolph scored a single run to close the gap to two. Randolph then exploded for five runs in the 5th inning to take the lead at 6-3. While Gowanda would not score again, Randolph added a 6th inning run for a final total of 7-3.

Exploration in Acrylic Paint Skins and Beyond will be continued from 1 on display from June 5 until Aug. 14 in the Harold for the Arts’ Art Crawl in L. Olmsted gallery inside Springville Center for the 2018.

Arts located at 37 N. Buffalo St. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

THINK SPRING FORESTVILLE ­­— Andrea Caccamise of Forestville, pictured above, was one of four winners of hand-painted birdhouses in Imagine Forestville’s “Painted Birdhouse Think Spring Extravaganza” raffle in May. James Naumoff of Fredonia, Jan Tofani of Forestville and Peggy VandeVelde of Fredonia were also winners.

The money raised will help fund the potential creation of a National Register Historic District in Forestville. In addition to the group’s fundraising, generous grants from the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation are funding this effort to preserve and enhance Forestville’s smalltown character and its histor-

ic homes and buildings.

Imagine Forestville is a not-for-profit volunteer organization “dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of our richly historic hamlet, including historic buildings, homes, farms and lands, in order to have a lasting legacy of our heritage and to be a welcoming rural community for years to come.”

The “birds” fundraising theme will continue when Imagine Forestville raffles off a handmade quilt of a traditional American pattern, “birds in flight,” this fall.

On May 27, Brocton came to Gowanda for what would become a thrill-packed game. In the opening inning, with a runner on base, Julianna Smith hit a Brocton home run over the left field corner. After another Brocton run scored, Gowanda went to work. Their first two batters, Addison Kota and Cameron Nagel, both singled. They both eventually scored leaving the score 3-2 after one. Brocton picked up another run in the 2nd before the Gowanda bats heated up. After an initial out, Ella Luther and Addison Kota both singled.

A Cameron Nagel double brought Luther home. Then, Zoey Kota blasted a home run over center field just to the left of the scoreboard. Gowanda had pulled in front 6-4. That score held until the 4th when Gowanda added four more runs. Scoring in the inning were: Zoey Kota, Hailey

3 Lancaster on May 24. By the end of the 1st half, Lancaster was up 12-4. The 2nd half was more of the same with Lancaster adding 10 goals while Gowanda generated another four for a 22-8 final. Leading Gowanda was Miya Scanlan with four goals. Chloe Luther added three goals and was credited with an assist. The other Gowanda goal was scored by Crissa Scanlan.

The team next faced Frontier at home on Hillis Field on May 26. Back on May 12 during the first home game of the season, it had initially gone unnoticed that Scotia Snyder had scored the 100th goal of her career at Gowanda. Teammate Miya Scanlan later realized that as Snyder’s streak closely paralleled her own streak closing on 200 career goals. Before the Frontier game, the team celebrated the 100-goal accomplishment. The game itself was close through the 1st half with Frontier only ahead 5-4 at the intermission. Things went south for Gowanda in the 2nd half as they were outscored 10-2 for a 15-6 final. Chloe Luther led the Gowanda attack with three goals. Scotia Snyder, Miya Scanlan and Lily Scanlan each had a single goal.

Brocton scored on another Smith home run in the 5th, this time a solo. Gowanda answered with four additional runs in the inning. A final Gowanda run in the 6th inning closed out the scoring at 15-5. Hailey Fort and Zoey Kota led Gowanda with three runs each. Addison Kota, Cameron Nagel and Lily Bobseine each scored twice.

Gowanda came out strong opening up a 9-5 lead in the 1st half. They added eight more goals in the 2nd half while limiting Tonawanda to two. That brought the final total to 17-7. Leading the Gowanda attack was Winter Rivera with 6 goals and 3 assists. Right behind was Nolan Smith with 5 goals plus 3 assists.

The team hosted powerhouse Salamanca on May 28. Salamanca blew up the 1st half outscoring Gowanda 14-3 by halftime.

While Gowanda played Salamanca even, 8-8, in the final half, the earlier scoring left the final tally at 22-11.
