Yul Brynner in “Westworld”
A fantasy vacation goes haywire in ‘Westworld’
The lure of a vacation resort where guests can live out their wildest dreams in the Old West or ancient Rome can have great appeal, as writer-director Michael Crichton knew when he invented “Westworld,” the 1973 fantasy that Turner Classic Movies shows Saturday, Sept. 13. The picture is brief — just under 90 minutes — but it gets its job done as Richard Benjamin and James Brolin play friends who visit the site and opt to play cowboy amid lifelike robots programmed to help them satisfy their aims. That’s rather literal in the case of the android gunslinger portrayed by Yul Brynner, who gives a strong indication that problems are afoot when he behaves against living beings, something he’s supposedly set up not to do. Also notable in the cast are Dick Van Patten (“Eight Is Enough”) and Majel Barrett (“Star Trek”). The concept was strong enough to inspire a movie sequel, “Futureworld” (1976), and a much-praised HBO series (2016-22) that added considerable complexity onto the original premise.
“Practical Magic” (Hulu, streaming): Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have been filming a sequel to this 1998 fantasy-comedy-drama, based on Alice Hoffman’s novel about sibling witches who use their powers to address their very different feelings about romance. The situation eventually involves them with an abusive man (Goran Visnjic), and the women’s magic may be the only way out for them. Directed by Griffin Dunne, the film also features Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest — who both reportedly return in the sequel as well — along with Aidan Quinn, Evan Rachel Wood and Mark Feuerstein.
