When he returns home after his father’s (Bill Nighy) death by suicide, Joel “Laz” Lazarus (Sam Claflin) begins to have disturbing experiences that can’t be explained. “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (Available Now)

From director Robert Zemeckis, this comedy blends animation and live-action acting, as it tells the tale of a cartoon rabbit (voiced by Charles Fleischer) accused of murder, who enlists the help of toon-hating private investigator Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) to prove his innocence. Christopher Lloyd, Kathleen Turner and Joanna Cassidy also star.

“A House of Dynamite” (Oct. 24)

When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by Noah Oppenheim, the film stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos and Jonah Hauer-King, among others.

Exploring one of the most brazen acts of fraud in Hollywood history, this three-part docuseries from director Rebecca Chaiklin tells the story of struggling actor Zach Horwitz — perhaps better known by his pseudonym, Zach Avery — who defrauded investors through his company, 1inMM Capital, by claiming he was purchasing foreign distribution rights to Hollywood films.

“Mob War: Philadelphia vs The Mafia” (Oct. 22)

The City of Brotherly Love can be far less than friendly. Across three episodes, this docuseries transports viewers to a time of strife in Philadelphia, as two warring mob factions — led by

In Focus

“Down Cemetery Road” (Apple TV+ — Oct. 29, Movie Premiere) When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, Sarah Tucker (Ruth Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoe Boehm (Emma Thompson). Zoe and Sarah suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.

“Hedda” (Prime Video — Oct. 29, Movie Premiere)
From writer and director Nia DaCosta comes this provoc
ative, modern reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play, in which Hedda (Tessa Thompson) finds herself torn between the lingering ache of a past love and the quiet suffocation of her present life. Over the course of one night, long-repressed desires and hidden tensions erupt — pulling her and everyone around her into a spiral of manipulation, passion and betrayal. Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock and Nina Hoss also star.

As we come to the end of another season of this “Walking Dead” spinoff, Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) inch ever closer to finding their way back to North America. After Spain, where in Europe will they go next? With Season 4 soon to come, Season 3 of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” ends on AMC this Sunday, Oct. 19. To bridge the gap between new episodes, fans of the series can explore extras at amc.com/shows/the-walking-dead-daryl-dixon/ video-extras—1073085

‘The Deer Hunter’ maintains its impact

The end of the 1970s was marked by several notable movies about the Vietnam War, and director Michael Cimino’s 1978 drama “The Deer Hunter” certainly was one of them. A winner of five Oscars including best picture, the film will be presented on MGM+ Drive-In on Sunday, Oct. 19, and Monday, Oct. 20. Robert De Niro heads a highly memorable cast as one of several small-town friends who live relatively comfortable lives until they head overseas for military duty ... and have experiences that mark them forever in various ways. Christopher Walken won an Academy Award for best supporting actor as another of the pals, giving a truly haunting performance illustrating how war genuinely can change someone. Meryl Streep had one of her first major screen roles as another town resident involved with the fellows; John Cazale, John Savage and George Dzundza also have sizable parts in the story, which starts out as reasonably tranquil and becomes quite harrowing, a big factor in its remaining so unforgettable.

“Edward Scissorhands” (Peacock, streaming; ABC, Sunday, Oct. 19; Freeform, Thursday, Oct. 23): The character’s name says a lot about his unique look in director Tim Burton’s 1990 fantasy, starring Johnny Depp (with a very memorable makeup job) as a robot left unfinished by an inventor (horror-movie icon Vincent Price), with a family then taking in the humanoid and giving him as normal a home life as possible ... but his unique nature and abilities leave him vulnerable to others who want to take advantage of him, and they do. Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker and Alan Arkin also are prominent in the cast.
