‘The Deer Hunter’ maintains its impact
The end of the 1970s was marked by several notable movies about the Vietnam War, and director Michael Cimino’s 1978 drama “The Deer Hunter” certainly was one of them. A winner of five Oscars including best picture, the film will be presented on MGM+ Drive-In on Sunday, Oct. 19, and Monday, Oct. 20. Robert De Niro heads a highly memorable cast as one of several small-town friends who live relatively comfortable lives until they head overseas for military duty ... and have experiences that mark them forever in various ways. Christopher Walken won an Academy Award for best supporting actor as another of the pals, giving a truly haunting performance illustrating how war genuinely can change someone. Meryl Streep had one of her first major screen roles as another town resident involved with the fellows; John Cazale, John Savage and George Dzundza also have sizable parts in the story, which starts out as reasonably tranquil and becomes quite harrowing, a big factor in its remaining so unforgettable.
“Edward Scissorhands” (Peacock, streaming; ABC, Sunday, Oct. 19; Freeform, Thursday, Oct. 23): The character’s name says a lot about his unique look in director Tim Burton’s 1990 fantasy, starring Johnny Depp (with a very memorable makeup job) as a robot left unfinished by an inventor (horror-movie icon Vincent Price), with a family then taking in the humanoid and giving him as normal a home life as possible ... but his unique nature and abilities leave him vulnerable to others who want to take advantage of him, and they do. Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker and Alan Arkin also are prominent in the cast.
