‘The Day of the Jackal’ tracks an elusive criminal’s moves

While it has fueled a Peacock series that is getting a second season, the Frederick Forsyth novel “The Day of the Jackal” first inspired a suspenseful 1973 movie that Turner Classic Movies presents Wednesday, Nov. 5. Leading off the channel’s month-long “Spotlight” on conspiracy and political thrillers, the drama from veteran director Fred Zinnemann (“From Here to Eternity,” 1953) stars Edward Fox as a non-flashy and thoroughly confident hit man known simply as “The Jackal,” recruited by militants to kill French President Charles de Gaulle. As the Jackal maps out his plans, a police official (Michael Lonsdale, later a James Bond opponent in 1979’s “Moonraker”) follows a lead to track the murderer. The realism of the tale’s ultimate scene, involving news footage of the real de Gaulle, provides an enormous payoff. With a terrifically European flavor achieved by filming across that continent, the picture also includes Derek Jacobi, Alan Badel, Cyril Cusack and Timothy West in its purposely foreign cast.

“Mr. Holland’s Opus” (Hulu, streaming): Richard Dreyfuss does wonderful, Oscar-nominated work as a music teacher with aspirations of composing a symphony ... one of the ironies of his life being that his son (played in older years by Anthony Natale) is deaf. The instructor battles to keep arts programs thriving at his school, with the principal (Olympia Dukakis) and vice-principal (William H. Macy) on opposing sides of that effort. Glenne Headly, Jay Thomas, Alicia Witt, Jean Louisa Kelly and Terrence Howard also are in the fine cast of this 1995 drama.
