The concept of an all-star cast has become standard operating procedure for many movies, but one of the first to use it was “Grand Hotel,” the winner of the 1932 Oscar for Best Picture — and rather famously not nominated in any other category. Not surprisingly, the film is a staple attraction on Turner Classic Movies, which shows it on Thursday, May 7, as part of a tribute to director Edmund Goulding (“The Razor’s Edge,” 1946). The adaptation of the Vicki Baum (“Shanghai 1937,” 1997) novel — and a 1930 stage version — brings together a cross-section of people at Berlin’s Grand Hotel, where a roguish baron (played by John Barrymore, “Dinner at Eight,” 1933) becomes acquainted with an ill accountant (Lionel Barrymore, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” 1946) whose ex-boss (Wallace Beery, “The Champ,” 1931) also is there on business. A ballerina (Greta Garbo, “Camille,” 1936), a would-be actress (Joan Crawford, “Johnny Guitar,” 1954) and a doctor (Lewis Stone, “Love Finds Andy Hardy,” 1938) who resides at the hotel are among others on hand, and the result was a huge box-office hit for its time. (Amusingly, Jack Lemmon sits down to watch it on TV in 1960’s “The Apartment,” but it keeps getting delayed by commercials.)
“Jack & Bobby” (Hulu, streaming): It might be a coincidence that this familiar-themed drama series is now available after the recent success of FX’s “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” ... but then again, it might not be. Matt Long (“Manifest”) and Logan Lerman (“Only Murders in the Building”) have the title roles in the 2004-05 WB Network show as brothers caught up in politics as their lives proceed, with one of them eventually becoming the American president. Christine Lahti (“Chicago Hope”), Jessica Pare (“Mad Men”), Edwin Hodge (“The Purge,” 2013), John Slattery (“Vladmir”) and Bradley Cooper (who did this program concurrent with his run on ABC’s “Alias”) also are in the
