‘The Insider’ breaks a big news story again

The CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes” has made many headlines — and continues to — and one of its most famous stories is dramatized by director and co-writer Michael Mann in the superb 1999 film “The Insider,” currently streaming on Hulu. Reunited with Mann several years after they collaborated on “Heat,” Al Pacino plays Lowell Bergman, an esteemed producer who takes up the cause of Jeffrey Wigand (an Oscar-nominated Rusell Crowe), a tobacco-industry whistleblower whom others want to silence because of the potentially damaging information he has. Much of the drama takes the form of lawyers arguing what can or can’t be suppressed, giving such excellent actors as the prolific Bruce McGill (“The Closer”) moments to shine. Another cast standout is Christopher Plummer, who won several honors for his portrayal of CBS News icon Mike Wallace, the on-camera face of the Wigand story while others develop concerns about possible legal action against the network if the reports are broadcast.

“Brooklyn Bridge” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, May 25):

Created by Gary David Goldberg (“Family Ties”), this hugely nostalgic series – presented here in an all-day “Binge” marathon — lasted two seasons (1991-93) on CBS, sustained largely by the wide acclaim it received from critics. It focuses on a 1950s New York family, with Danny Gerard playing a surrogate for Goldberg in his own youth. Marion Ross had cemented herself as one of TV ‘s top moms through her work on “Happy Days,” so she was a perfect fit for the role of the grandmother here; Louis Zorich, Amy Aquino and Peter Friedman also were regular cast members.
