Travel back in time and explore one of history’s greatest cautionary tales for yourself with the debut of “The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire,” a new series premiering Wednesday, May 27, on History.

You might have heard the phrase “all roads lead to Rome.” But for five centuries, the idiom proved itself more than true. The Roman Empire (active from 27 BC to AD 476, per Britannica) was once a central hub for all that surrounded it, featuring an extensive system of complicated roads that all met at the Milliarium Aureum in Rome. The empire saw rapid expansion, massive military accomplishments and — ultimately — a devastating collapse, leaving behind a history that scholars, enthusiasts and historians still contemplate today.

With this latest special, the network manages to share a comprehensive look at the empire’s staggering rise and fall, from the early days of the Republic to Rome’s military expansion — through the Punic Wars and the Macedonian Wars — to Rome’s relationship with Greece, Roman technologies, societal struggles in the Late Republic and more.

Across both episodes, the series will also discuss the emperors who led the Roman Empire through each stage of its existence, from the first Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus, to the last, Romulus Augustulus. While some names might be totally unfamiliar to viewers, others — such as Julius Caesar, Nero and the bloodthirsty Caligula — have left such a mark on history that their names have become synonymous with the empire.

“After the First 48”Season 11 (May 28)

Despite many cases being solved within the first 48 hours after the crime took place, these investigations go beyond the first 48 hours, featuring interviews with detectives, prosecutors, lawyers, relatives of victims and others.

In

“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder”Season 2 (May 27) After solving the Andie Bell case, Pip (Emma Myers) is determined to fix the fallout — and stay away from any more investigations. But as Max Hastings’ (Henry Ashton) trial approaches, Connor’s (Jude Morgan-Collie) brother Jamie (Eden H. Davies) suddenly disappears, and Pip finds herself in a race against time to find him.

“Calabasas Confidential”Season 1 (May 29) After graduating college, a group of lifelong friends, foes, and exes return to Calabasas for a summer they’ll never forget. Back home and living in their parents’ hillside mansions, they’ll be faced with the daunting reality of confronting unresolved drama while trying to define what’s next for their lives and relationships. Four years may have put distance between them, but new flames, old feuds, and unexpected secrets don’t stay hidden forever behind the gates of LA’s most envied zip code.

“The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire” joins an impressive roster of past History series detailing the time period, including “Engineering an Empire,” “Rome: Rise and Fall of an Empire,” “Colosseum,” “Ancient Empires” and 2024’s “Drain the Oceans: The Rise of the Roman Empire,” a YouTube exclusive special that explores Roman trade routes now submerged underwater.
From October Films, the creators of “Emperor: The Rise & Fall of a Dynasty” — and executive producers such as Neil Breakwell (“Secret Life of the Lighthouse”), Mike Warner (“Colosseum”) and Kathryn Taylor (“America: The Story of the US”) — “The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire” makes its debut Wednesday, May 27, on History.
“Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1” (Available Now)

Steve McQueen and others attempt ‘The Great Escape’

Steve McQueen (“The Thomas Crown Affair,” 1968) was already well on his way to becoming an icon of cool when he made “The Great Escape,” but that 1963 war drama did much to cement that image for him. Directed by action specialist John Sturges (“The Magnificent Seven,” 1960), the fact-inspired film traditionally is a part of the annual Memorial Day weekend marathon of war stories on Turner Classic Movies, which shows it again Monday, May 25.

McQueen plays the so-called “Cooler King,” one of the allied captives in a German prison camp during World War II. Known for his rebellious nature and motorcycle-riding skills, he becomes involved in an escape plan hatched by a number of his fellow captives — eventually leading to the famous scene of McQueen’s character (played in that moment by stunt double Bud Ekins, who also stunted in 1968’s “Bullitt”) jumping a bike over a barbed-wire fence. James Garner (“Maverick”), Richard Attenborough (“Jurassic Park,” 1993), Charles Bronson (“Death Wish,” 1974), Donald Pleasence (“Halloween,” 1978), James Coburn (“The Magnificent Seven,” 1960) and David McCallum (“Saphire & Steel”) also are in the first-rate cast.

“Cash Cab” (Game Show Network, daily): A very basic but hugely enjoyable game that takes place during a cab ride across New York (though some fifth-year episodes were done in Las Vegas), this contest is immense fun as comedian and driver
