Jeff Bridges lands well in ‘Starman’

Jeff Bridges is renowned for his typically gregarious screen persona, which makes his achievement in director John Carpenter’s 1984 sci-fi drama “Starman” all the more striking. The actor earned an Oscar nomination for his work in the film, which MGM+ shows Wednesday, June 24 ... and which casts him as an alien who assumes human form after crash-landing on Earth. The form is that of the husband of a young widow (Karen Allen, “Animal House,” 1978), who’s more than shocked when it first appears that her spouse has returned to life. Eventually, she accepts the circumstances that will cost the visitor his life unless he reaches a destination where he is supposed to be retrieved by others of his kind. A federal official (Richard Jaeckel, “The Dirty Dozen,” 1967) may get in the way of that, while a scientist tries to help the extraterrestrial get back home. Bridges’s extremely mannered performance is the key to the picture’s success, and the more you know about his career, the clearer it is to see the discipline he put into his job here. The movie inspired a 1986-87 ABC series that starred Robert Hays (“Airplane!,” 1980).

“Psych” (get TV, weeknights): Originally shown on USA Network, this enjoyable comedy-mystery series has had a strong afterlife on other TV outlets from 2006 to 2014, even inspiring three sequel movies. James Roday Rodriguez (“A Million Little Things”) plays Shawn Spencer, a glib amateur sleuth who passes off his keen observational abilities as being psychic powers, making him and best friend Gus (Dule Hill, “Holes,” 2003) of some use
