Renee Zellweger opens ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’

Some fans of the Helen Fielding novel were decidedly unhappy about the main part going to a non-British actress, but Renee Zellweger won over most doubters with her performance — earning an Oscar nomination and starting a film franchise — in “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” the 2001 comedy-drama that Freeform shows on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Bridget is a publicist with a colossal crush on her boss (Hugh Grant), which makes her less open to a potential relationship with a family acquaintance (Colin Firth) as she sets out to change her life at the start of a new year. Little goes according to plan for Bridget, and the relatability of the character had a lot to do with sustaining her through three movie sequels and a stage musical that has been workshopped but has yet to receive a full production. Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones play Bridget’s parents; the first of the sequels, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” (2004), immediately follows this showing.
