In Focus

“Pokémon Concierge” – (Netflix — Sept. 4, New Episodes)

In new episodes, Haru is no longer a newbie concierge. Alongside her partner Psyduck, she welcomes new Pokémon guests like Sealeo, Shinx, Arcanine and Corphish. Amid sunny and relaxing days at the resort, Haru receives a surprise visit from her ex-boyfriend, Kent. Also checking in is Dan, accompanied by his longtime friend, Sealeo, and a quiet sadness that follows him. As Haru grows more confident in her role, she handles unexpected challenges and deepens her bond with the Pokémon in these warm, heartfelt selection of new episodes.

“Highest 2 Lowest” – (Apple TV+ — Sept. 5, Movie Premiere) From acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee, this neo-noir crime thriller acts as a modern-day retelling of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film, “High and Low” — itself an adaptation of the 1959 novel “King’s Ransom” by author Evan Hunter. When David King (Denzel Washington), a titan music mogul, is targeted in a ransom plot, he finds himself in the midst of a life-altering moral dilemma.

When a man is found dead the day before his wedding, Judith (Samantha Bond) and the girls (Jo Martin, Cara Horgan) take it upon themselves to investigate further. The man’s young fiancee, bitter son and scheming ex-wife leave the ladies with plenty of suspects and potential motives, leading to an exciting start for Season 2 of “The Marlow Murder Club,” premiering on PBS this Sunday, Aug. 24. For a glimpse of what comes next, check out pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/clips/ the-marlow-murder-club-s2-trailer/

In pursuit of living a longer life, “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth works to keep his brain firing fast by learning to play the drums. When he’s invited to play onstage alongside Ed Sheeran, however, it’s not only the instrument he must conquer, but some gnarly nerves. Season 2 of “Limitless With Chris Hemsworth” kicks off with a hefty round of applause — and three back-to-back episodes — this Monday, Aug. 25, on National Geographic. Season 2’s trailer can be found at youtube. com/watch?v=CF9LnbtZpnI

‘The Music Man’ brings good trouble to River City

As many actors might play a certain role, some parts are forever associated with one performer ... and with due respect to Hugh Jackman for his run in a Broadway revival not too long ago, Robert Preston owns “The Music Man” in the minds of many fans. Turner Classic Movies shows the 1962 screen version of the popular musical Monday, Aug. 25, as part of a “Summer Under the Stars” day saluting co-star Shirley Jones. Reprising his New York stage role, Preston is legendary as professor Harold Hill, a con man who convinces the residents of River City, Iowa to fund a youth marching band. He suspects that town librarian Marian (Jones) will question his motives, so he tries to preempt her by romancing her in a ruse that turns real. Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford and a very young “Ronny” Howard also are in the spirited cast. The great score includes “Till There Was You,” “Goodnight, My Someone” and the marching-band favorite, “Seventy-Six Trombones.”

“Father of the Bride” (Hulu, streaming): This 1991 remake is ideal for Steve Martin, playing a harried dad who can’t get used to the idea that his cherished daughter (Kimberly Williams, in her first major role) has fallen in love and is getting married. Though his wife (Diane Keaton, who also had worked with filmmakers Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers on 1988’s “Baby Boom”) tries to be a voice of reason for all concerned parties, Martin’s character only gets edgier as the nuptials draw nearer. Martin Short is hilarious as an offbeat wedding planner; Hulu also is showing the 1995 sequel “Father of the Bride Part II.”
