The Jets and the Sharks face off in ‘West

Side Story’

One of the all-time classic musicals, “West Side Story” has maintained the popularity of its original 1961 screen version though a Steven Spielberg-directed remake was released in 2021. MGM+ shows the original edition Saturday, Aug. 23, as it updates the “Romeo and Juliet” saga with Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as Maria and Tony ... the young lovers in then-contemporary New York who have respective ties to the Sharks and the Jets, rival street gangs. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, the film won 10 of the 11 Oscars it was nominated for — including those for supporting players Rita Moreno (who also was in Spielberg’s version) and George Chakiris. Russ Tamblyn also stars; the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim music score includes the classics “Somewhere,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty” and “America.” Wise and Lehman reteamed on another of the greatest movie musicals, “The Sound of Music” (1965).

“Daniel Boone” (FETV, Sundays and Saturdays): Fess Parker already had fame from his television run as frontiersman Davy Crockett when he embodied another legend of the same era in this 1964-70 NBC show. He also was a producer and sometimes director as Boone’s experiences as an explorer and family man were dramatized. Actor-singer Ed Ames also starred as Native-American companion Mingo ... and one of the performer’s most memorable, and hilarious, career moments came when Johnny Carson challenged him to throw a tomahawk at a target on “The Tonight Show.”
