Sometimes, the efforts of one determined man are the only thing keeping a community from becoming a ghost town. In the new Apple TV horror-comedy series “Widow’s Bay,” Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”) attempts to entice tourists to visit the titular small island town with ghosts of its own. The first three episodes of the series will be available to stream on premiere day, Wednesday, April 29, with the remaining episodes dropping weekly on Wednesdays through June 17. Lying just off the coast of New England, the island town of Widow’s Bay, lacking in modern amenities, has been struggling. Though he is not well liked or respected much by his fellow community members, Tom is
fixated on creating a future for Widow’s Bay as a tourist destination for the next generation to inherit. If imagining a bright future for a place with a name like Widow’s Bay wasn’t hard enough, Tom’s town is deficient in basic things like reliable WiFi and cell service, making his dream look that much more impossible. So where is the horror part of the horror-comedy? Well, just as Tom’s efforts are paying off and vacationers are welcomed to the island, his superstitious constituents are proven right after all — the old wives’ tales of the curse that hangs over Widow’s Bay turn out to be true. Decades of calm on the island caused Tom to wave off curse concerns, however the arrival of outsiders upsets the balance that kept the peace in Widow’s Bay.
“Lord
Just what those horrors are remains to be seen, but according to the series description from Apple TV, the series “blends genuine horror with character-driven comedy.”
In the official trailer for “Widow’s Bay,” Tom welcomes a guest to the island who he catches getting a briefing of the community’s history at town hall. The visitor tells Tom that he’d been warned by someone on the ferry that “bad things happen here.” On the defensive, Tom assured him that the superstitions are charming and, “what town doesn’t have a checkered past?” Unfortunately, Tom ends his reassurances as they stand in front of a section of the town museum dedicated to the island’s history of cannibalism. “I don’t think that’s right,” Tom says in an attempt to
smooth over some unsavory town lore.
Starring in “Widow’s Bay” are Kate O’Flynn (“Everyone Else Burns”), Stephen Root (“Barry”), Kingston Rumi Southwick (“Based On a True Story”), Kevin Carroll (“The Leftovers”) and Dale Dickey (“The Lowdown”). Supporting cast includes K Callan (“Knives Out,” 2019) and Emmy Award winner Jeff Hiller (“Somebody Somewhere”). The series was created by “Parks and Recreation” writer Katie Dippold, who serves as showrunner and executive producer. “The Bear” and “Atlanta” producer Hiro Murai executive produced the series and directed five of the show’s 10 episodes. Episode directors include Ti West (“MaXXXine,” 2024), Sam Donovan (“Severance”) and Andrew DeYoung (“The Chair Company”).

“Should I Marry A Murderer?” premieres Wednesday, April 29, on Netflix, following the extraordinary story of Dr. Caroline Muirhead, who found herself unexpectedly involved with Parsons’ case.
Only months away from their wedding, Muirhead was approached by her then-fiance, Alexander McKellar, who — overcome by guilt — admitted to accidentally killing Parsons during a hit-and-run. McKellar claimed that he and his brother, Robert, failed to find medical attention in time for Parsons after the collision, and that Parsons quickly died from his injuries. After confessing to his future wife, McKellar then led Muirhead to the spot where Parsons was buried, proving his story to be true.

“To remain in love, you have to keep this secret that you know is going to destroy you,” she continues. “But if you reveal it, then you destroy everything. I mean, what would you do?”
For Muirhead, the answer was simple: no matter what, she would make sure Parsons saw the justice he deserved. Thinking fast, Muirhead left

The working world rarely, if ever, has been as tuneful as in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Adapted and directed by David Swift (“The Parent Trap,” 1998), the 1967 film version of the stage hit will be shown Sunday, April 26, by Turner Classic Movies as the front half of a Robert Morse (“The Loved One,” 1965) double feature — with the actor reprising his Broadway role as J. Pierrepont Finch, a New York window washer with big aspirations to ascend in the corporate world. He gets his chance by following the advice of a book that shares the musical’s title ... and the book was an actual publication, written by Shepherd Mead (“General Motors Theatre”). Rudy Vallee (“The Palm Beach Story,” 1942) plays the chief of the company where Finch pursues his quest, with Michele Lee (“Knots Landing”) as secretary Rosemary, who becomes Finch’s love interest; both performers also were in the initial Broadway staging of the show. Highlight of the Frank Loesser (“Guys and Dolls,” 1955) musical score include “I Believe in You,” “Brotherhood of Man” and “Been a Long Day.” Briefly visible as one of the office workers is Robert Osborne (“Private Screenings”), who later became a TCM staple as the channel’s first host.
“Sea of Love” (Peacock, streaming): After taking several years off from moviemaking, Al Pacino (“The Godfather,” 1972) returned very effectively in this 1989 melodrama, playing a personally troubled New York police detective tracking a serial killer who evidently uses a newspaper’s singles ads to choose victims. The cop places such an ad, hoping the replies will lead him to his quarry. Ellen Barkin (“Animal Kingdom”), who reunited with Pacino in “Ocean’s Thirteen” (2007) portrays a woman who connects with the sleuth. John Goodman (“Roseanne”) is very enjoyable as another detec-
