Calendar of Events February 21 Penguin Paddle at Holiday Valley

So far this week, winter break in Ellicottville has been a blast. Great snow, invigorating temperatures, excellent ski/ boarding classes and plenty of cozy spots to warm up have been keeping everyone happy, active and ready for more. Well, more is on the calendar! Holiday Valley is hosting two amazing events this Saturday, Feb. 21 – the annual Penguin Paddle fundraiser and the all-new Red Bull All Snow jam. Penguin Paddle runs all day and features a seriously funny penguin-style belly race with participants clad in stylish black plastic trash bags. Get in on the fun at the base of Yodeler. Proceeds from the event benefit Holiday Valley’s Lounsbury Adaptive Ski Program. At the terrain park, take the kids to watch the “Red Bull All Snow” open jam for snowboarders and freeskiers age 18+. They’ll showcase their “best tweaks, plants, airs and flow” on half-pipes, side cuts and other apparatus built entirely from snow. While spending the entire day on the slopes is never a bad thing, kids can always use a little variety. How about a visit to the Holiday Valley Tubing Park for some slip-sliding fun? Or head to Tannenbaum and take the kids for a spin on the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster. HoliMont members will be treated to a Dekdebrun’s Ski/ Snowboard Shop Demo Day on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the base of Exhibition Express. Of course, you can also spend some time in the Village doing some all-important shopping or enjoying family-friendly dining at any of Ellicottville’s many restaurants and cafes. And be sure to check out our calendar of events (this page) for all the reasons you should plan to come back for another wonderful winter vacation or weekend in Ellicottville!

The Town of Ellicottville’s board met Wednesday, Feb. 18, and provided updates on some issues raised by residents at last month’s meeting. The resident who complained that a new streetlight at the intersection of Maples and Elk Creek roads shines directly into his and other homes reported that National Grid had sent technicians to change the light’s angle and paint the inside of the lens, but the problem has not been solved. Town Engineer Mark Alianello said he spoke with a National Grid representative about alternatives and was told that changing the fixture to accommodate a lower wattage bulb would cost the town more than $450. Mansfield Considers Judicial Merger By Jann Wiswall

Discussion about short- and long-term options regarding the town justice position in Mansfield continued during the board’s meeting on Monday, Feb. 16. The first task following Mansfield Justice Randy Alexander’s resignation on

Dec. 31 was for the state’s administrative judge to assign an acting justice through April 30, 2015. East Otto Town Justice Dennis Young was tapped for that role. The next steps for the board are to: 1) appoint a temporary judge for the period of May 1-Dec. 31, 2015; 2) hold an

election in November 2015 for a judge to serve out the last two years of Alexander’s four-year term, and 3) study the pros and cons of merging Mansfield’s judiciary with another municipality for the long term. The appointment of a See Mansfield Board page 9

EVL Library Receives $5K Donation Mary Ellen Morrison donated $5,000 to the Ellicottville Memorial Library on Friday afternoon, Feb. 13, 2015. The donation was the wish of her late husband, Don Morrison, who was an avid reader and was part of the Library’s original book selection committee. Both Mary Ellen and Don were frequent library users. Mary Ellen’s nephews, Mark and Mike Johnson, traveled from Wisconsin to be a part of the donation ceremony. Sherry Sutton, a family friend of Mary Ellen’s, was at the gathering, as well, and expressed Don’s wishes to see his family and community “enjoy the benefit of the donation now!”

In a nutshell, telemark skiing utilizes a different boot and binding than traditional downhill skiing, and the major difference is that the heel is free and able to lift off the ski. Telemark skiing is a versatile skiing style that allows the freedom to ski both at the resort and in the backcountry, with the idea that free heels See Teleski Ellicottville page 9
