Master Gardeners Donate Children’s Books to Local Libraries

BY MARK SULLENBERGER support the Master Gardener program mission of MASTER GARDENER providing knowledge-based JAMESTOWN – Cornell information on sustainable Cooperative Extension horticulture and gardening of Chautauqua County’s for the public. This specific Master Gardener Volunteer donation offers support to Program recently donated the youth of the community books to the 24 local libraries from pre-school through in the Chautauqua County 4th grades. The books are Library system. Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, onequarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa. You can enjoy the grounds, with its six miles of trails, and view Liberty, Audubon’s nonreleasable Bald Eagle, dawn to dusk daily, free of charge.

The three-story Nature Center building houses interactive displays, a collection of live animals including the new Hellbender exhibit, and the Blue Heron Gift Shop.

Visitors are welcome Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Sundays, 1 4:30 p.m. Nature Center members enjoy free building admission daily, and building admission is free every Sunday for nonNature Center members as well.

Foster Parent Recruitment Event Scheduled This Weekend MAYVILLE The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and local voluntary foster care agencies will host a foster parent and kinship recruitment event on Saturday, September 25, 2021 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Cassadaga Fire Hall, 22 Mill St. in Cassadaga, N.Y. The event is free and open to the public.

Through this event, we hope to educate the community about the need for foster parents and kinship resources in Chautauqua County as well as to provide information for those people who might be interested in the process of becoming licensed foster parents and relative foster parents. General orientation sessions will be offered during the event at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.

Along with presentations

by Chautauqua County DHHS, New Directions Youth and Family Services, Hillside Children’s Center, GA Family Services, OLV Human Services, and two local service agencies (Court Appointed Special Advocates and Every Child Ministries) that support foster children and foster parents will be on hand to recruit volunteers and share information about their programs. In addition, the Chautauqua County Health Department will have information tables for some of their programs.

If you enjoy working with children and you would like to help families in our community, consider attending this event. Masks are required for all attendees and COVID safety protocols

will be followed.

Foster Care services in Chautauqua County provide out-of-home care for children in the custody of the Commissioner of Social Services. Foster care plays an important role in providing temporary, safe and nurturing homes to children when their parents are unable to care for them.

Children are placed in foster homes in situations where they have been removed from their own families because they have been abused and/or neglected or because other family problems exist that endanger their safety. The children may range from infancy through 18 years of age and may have special medical, physical or emotional needs; the children may belong to any ethnicity or race and be part of a group of brothers and sisters who need to remain together.

“There are 98 children currently in foster care in Chautauqua County,” said Leanna Luka-Conley, Deputy Commissioner of Adult, Children, and Family Services. “Becoming a foster parent is a rewarding and challenging opportunity to change someone’s life.

Children of all ages in our own communities are in need of ‘professional parents’ to give them a good, temporary home and a chance to succeed in life.”

County Clerk Candidate David Salley Calls on Larry Barmore for Transparency FredoniaChautauqua County Clerk Candidate David Salley today called on Larry Barmore to show more transparency regarding his claims that the county was one of the first DMVs to reopen and that Chautauqua County DMV’s reopened nearly six weeks earlier than originally proposed.

“Chautauqua County was one of the last counties to open their DMVs. Erie County (June 16, 2020), Niagara County (June 21, 2020), Cattaraugus County from the edges of ponds (June 21, 2020), Genesee Change the water in County (June 17, 2020), birdbaths and horse troughs Monroe County (June 16, twice a week.

The risk of contracting either the EEE virus or the WNV coincides with heaviest mosquito activity, typically from June through September with peak activity in August. In the last 20 years, New York State has reported 624 human cases of the WNV with 49 fatalities (excludes New York City) as compared with only 11 reported human cases of EEE between 1971 and 2015, all of which occurred in the Central New York area.

West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Detected in Chautauqua Area M AY V I LLE–T h e Chautauqua County Department of Health & Human Services (CCDHHS) is urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and protect themselves from potential exposure to the mosquitoborne illnesses West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

The Health Department has received notification from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Arbovirus Laboratory that WNV was confirmed in a horse in the Ashville area of Chautauqua County and EEE was confirmed in a horse in the Conewango Valley area of Cattaraugus County. While WNV is generally considered to be present throughout Western New York, this is the first EEE detected since 2013.

“The WNV and EEE are serious viral diseases that are transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito,” said Christine Schuyler, County Public Health Director. “Various mosquito species transmit different diseases that are caused by different viruses.

The key to safeguarding against these illnesses is to take basic precautions to avoid mosquito bites.”

There is no commercially available human vaccine for either WNV or EEE. The best way to protect yourself

is to keep mosquitoes from biting you. EEE and WNV vaccines are available for horses in consultation with a veterinarian.

People are urged to follow these precautions to defend against mosquito bites: Use insect repellent properly. Those that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are most effective but should be used with care. Read the product label and use according to package instructions.

Limit outdoor activities in areas where mosquitoes are most active and between dusk and dawn which is the peak mosquito biting time.

If you have to be outside, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes and socks as weather permits.

Repair or replace all window and door screens to keep mosquitoes outside.

Reduce or eliminate all standing water.

Empty or dispose of pails, cans, flower pots, or similar water-holding containers.

Clear roof gutters, remove leaf debris from yards and gardens, and clean vegetation and debris from the edge of ponds.

Turn over wheelbarrows and wading pools when not in use.

Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs and drain pool covers.

Salley also commented about Barmore’s recent comment that he runs the Chautauqua County Clerk’s office like a business and

was only helping people who had his phone number with personal deliveries to get cars back on the road.

“A government office is NOT a business. We proved that with the Post Office.

A business only serves the people where it is profitable and doesn’t bother with the markets where the profit margin isn’t great enough to justify the expense. Also, when I am County Clerk, I will make sure that everyone is served in times of crisis, not just my personal friends.

A government office must serve ALL the people.” Salley Concluded.
