BY KIM KNAPPENBERGER JAMESTOWN, NY — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Lake Erie Regional Grape Program is beginning to wrap up the Vineyard Improvement Program. This five year grant was one of the outcomes of the Concord Grape Summit held in Westfield New York in April 2018. The LERGP continues to accept applications for the reimbursement program, however the removal and replant will need to be completed in this growing season so that the reimbursements can be completed by the close of the grant at the end of March 2023.
The Vineyard Improvement Program is a reimbursement program that matches funds used to remove unwanted Concord vineyards that may be in a poor site, not producing well, or the vineyard is in disrepair or not contracted. Eligible vineyards would be those in the Southern Tier – Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Broome, Chenango and Delaware counties, as well as Erie (NY) and Niagara Counties. Reimbursement for vineyard removal is 50% of costs up to $1,500 which may include labor, custom hire,

If we aren’t sure if it is eligible, we will ask! For those approved replants, eligible costs include trellis, perennial plant material – vines/trees, labor, equipment use or rental, and land preparation. Replants
of seed crops are not eligible for reimbursement. Reimbursements cannot exceed $3,000 per acre with a maximum award of $50,000 per applicant. The land must be returned to agricultural use. AUDUBON ANNUAL PLANT EXCHANGE AND SALE, SATURDAY, MAY 21 JAMESTOWN, NY— Pick out some new plants for your garden when you stop by Audubon Community Nature Center’s (ACNC) 2022 Plant Exchange and Sale on Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can trade your own potted plants in exchange for new ones or purchase plants outright. There will be a large selection of native plants, as well as annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. Locally owned and operated Royal Fern Nursery and Hickory Hurst Farm will be onsite with a selection of native plants for sale, Clearwater Compost will be selling bags of compost to help your new plants get off to a great start and Leslie Hallock, the glass gardener, will be on hand with garden ornaments. Audubon’s garden crew is also putting together a small rummage sale of gently used garden equipment and books that will be for sale. Volunteer Master Gardeners will be on hand to give advice at the advice table. Audubon plants are sold for $2.50 per 4” pot, $5 per 6 - 8” pot and $10 per 10” pot. A tent will be set up to bring your plants in to trade for tickets. Each ticket is worth a dollar toward plant purchases. MAYVILLE, NY – The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services (CCDHHS) Division of Public Health has announced two free rabies vaccination clinics. The first clinic will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Town of Poland Highway Department at 533 Grubb Hill in Kennedy, NY. The second clinic will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Town of Westfield Highway Department at 118 Chestnut St. in Westfield, N.Y. These clinics will be drive-in clinics and animals must be pre-registered to receive vaccinations. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older. The Town of Poland, along with the Chautauqua County Division of Public Health will co-sponsor the Poland clinic. Dr. Mary Fales will be the attending veterinarian. At the clinics, vehicles will enter location and will follow the established traffic pattern on-site. Pet owners will stay in their vehicles with their pets, unless otherwise instructed. Pet owners must bring previous rabies vaccination records for each animal receiving a shot to ensure proper and effective vaccination; clinic staff will confirm previous rabies vaccination records. All dogs must be on a leash. All cats must be in a carrier. Animal handlers will transport animals from the vehicle to the veterinarian for vaccination. New York State Public Health Law requires each dog, cat, and
domesticated ferret over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies. County residents are encouraged to be responsible pet owners by having their pets vaccinated. Rabies is a very serious disease of warm-blooded animals caused by a virus. Raccoons, bats, skunks, and foxes are common disease carriers. The virus is transmitted to humans and animals through saliva and it can enter the body from a bite, scratch, scrape or open cut. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system and can cause brain swelling and ultimately death within days of the onset of symptoms. SOUTHWEST, NY – With the current volatile dairy market, rising input costs, and continued challenges in commercial dairy production, farm owners are looking for new ways to improve their profitability. For farms interested in diversifying or vertically integrating their business, one option could be on-farm processing of raw
milk into value-added goods and bottled fluid milk for sale. Cornell Cooperative Extension and Cornell University experts are coming together to present a series of webinars to discuss the business considerations and regulatory requirements of onfarm dairy processing. This is a 3-part webinar series that aims to discuss: Business Planning and Marketing; Processing and Milk Quality; and Marketing and Audits.
