DUNKIRK, N.Y., - Fredonia Cub Scouts Pack 267 recently participated in Scouting For Food, an annual program of Scouts BSA. As Scouts, we know how fortunate we are to have a warm meal every night — whether around the campfire or at the kitchen table - and we know that not everyone is so lucky. Scouting For Food is an annual food collection drive for our local food pantries. The program has been ongoing since 1985. Cubs from
Pack 267 in Fredonia collected non-perishable food items from friends, family, and neighbors, to deliver to Rural Ministry in Dunkirk. The Cubs were greeted by Executive Director Kathleen Peterson, who spent some time educating the Cubs about how many households would be positively impacted by their donations, and the services that are provided by Rural Ministry. Pack 267 is grateful for opportunities to provide service to our community, and
thanks Rural Ministry for welcoming us into their space and taking the time to help instill the importance of service in our Cubs. Cub Scouts is open to boys and girls in grades K-5. DUNKIRK— Kids and adults are invited to stop by on Saturday, May 21 from 10 am to 1 pm, with their bicycles for a family-friendly bicycle event. Spoke Folk of Dunkirk will be on hand to perform bicycle safety checks, provide free tune ups and teach some basic service and care. First Baptist Church is partnering with Spoke Folk to provide this community service and encourage people to get out and ride. This event will get you and your family ready for the up-coming Central Connection Bike Rides throughout the spring and summer.
Free Tune-up and safety check for your bicycles. Free Helmets will be given out while supplies last. We have a variety of sizes and colors. Free Bicycles – we have a number of bicycles of different sizes and styles. There will be free drawings to pick winners. Free Refreshments – drinks and snacks will be provided. The Spoke Folk Community Bicycle Program continues to work toward building a healthier community… One Bicycle at a Time. Through donations and a
volunteer staff, bicycle related programs and services are available to our area residents. Simple ways to reduce risk of disease in your garden No garden is immune to disease. Even the most attentive, experienced gardeners have had to confront disease in their gardens, which can lead to significant damage and potentially kill plants. Various bacterial, fungal and viral diseases can affect gardens, and the University of Maryland Extension notes that fungicides, which are chemicals that destroy fungus, are only rarely recommended to combat disease. In fact, a proactive approach rooted in prevention is often the most effective way to reduce risk for disease in gardens. ¥ Choose the right varieties of plant. The UME notes that choosing disease-resistant varieties is an effective way to prevent disease in gardens. Gardeners who have confronted disease in their gardens in the past should do their best to identify which diseases were present and then choose plants that
are considered resistant to those diseases. A local garden center professional can help gardeners who are uncertain about what to plant. ¥ Plant in the right spots. The choice of where to plant is significant. Avoid wet areas with insufficient drainage. The home renovation experts at HGTV note that wet soil can decrease plantsÕ chances for survival because of excess water and a lack of oxygen. If the only spots available for planting tend to be especially wet, consider planting in raised beds or having a French drain installed. Learn how much light plants need prior to planting them. Some can thrive in shady areas, while others require ample sunlight each day. ¥ Plant at the right time. Planting too early when the soil is not yet warm enough can make plants vulnerable to disease by weakening their ability to fight. Use a soil thermome-
ter to determine soil temperature and only plant when the conditions for planting are ideal. ¥ Harvest on time. When planting vegetables, itÕs imperative that the vegetables are harvested on time. The University of Georgia Extension notes that fully mature vegetables left on the plant attract disease and are vulnerable to insect in festations.
¥ Control insect infestations. Certain insects can spread disease, so itÕs important that gardeners learn to recognize which insects pose a threat to their plants. Speak with a local gardening center about invasive insects and how to address infestations without harming the plant. As the planting season approaches, gardeners can take various steps to make their plants and vegetables less vulnerable to disease.

MAVILLE, NY— As announced through the New York State Department of Health’s ‘Test Soon, Treat Early’ initiative, oral antiviral treatments are now available by prescription and are a powerful tool to prevent severe COVID-19 disease and death in infected persons. Treatments for COVID-19 are most effective when given soon after symptom onset so it is very important for persons experiencing symptoms to test early. Because oral antivirals are taken by mouth and do not require an IV or injection, they are convenient and easy to administer. Anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should test as early as possible, and if the test is positive, eligible individuals should discuss treatment options with their health care provider. “Oral treatment options for COVID-19 are a game changer in the fight against this virus,” stated Christine Schuyler, Public Health Director. “We are excited that there is finally widespread availability of these prescription medications that have the potential to save lives, especially for high-risk, vulnerable, or unvaccinated community members as we continue to battle COVID-19 infections.” Currently, two oral antiviral medications, Paxlovid and Lagevrio (molnupiravir), have Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for treatment of COVID-19. It is recommended that healthcare
providers treating people who are confirmed COVID-positive and have mild-to-moderate COVID-19 symptoms, strongly consider prescribing an oral antiviral. These therapies require a prescription by a licensed and authorized provider. Contact your healthcare provider if you test positive for COVID-19 and meet the following eligibility requirements: • Age 12 years or older weighing at least 40 kg (88 pounds) for Paxlovid, or 18 years or older for Lagevrio (molnupiravir); • Test positive for SARS-CoV-2
on a nucleic acid amplification test or antigen test; results from an FDA-authorized home-test kit should be validated through video or photo but, if not possible, patient attestation is acceptable; • Have mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms • Patient must not be hospitalized due to severe or critical COVID-19; and • Able to start treatment within 5 days of symptom onset. Both Paxlovid and Lagevrio (molnupiravir) are currently available by prescription at pharmacies participating in the Fed-
eral Retail Pharmacy Program, in nursing home pharmacies, and retail pharmacies. Retail pharmacies currently reporting availability throughout Chautauqua County include CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreen’s, and Wal-Mart.
