With the waters of the Dunkirk Harbor at his back, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today announced that he has secured over $10 million for critical local infrastructure projects in Chautauqua County. Schumer said that this funding, secured as a part of the Fiscal Year 2022 omnibus, includes over $8 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to dredge and study-design essential breakwater improvements for Western New York harbors, and $2 million for the Village of

Mayville to replace a contaminated well so that residents can have access to safe clean water. The senator said that these projects will both boost residents by finally providing the support needed for these long overdue infrastructure improvements, but also protect the tourism, jobs, and the economy of the Chautauqua communities and surrounding Western New York region, which rely on the harbors especially in the upcoming summer months.

Schumer Secures continued from 1 that the USACE funding would go towards $5,930,000 for dredging and breakwater repairs to the Dunkirk Harbor, $1,150,000 for dredging Barcelona Harbor, and $1,000,000 for dredging the Cattaraugus Creek Harbor.

The senator said that this funding will help address many of the problems at the Barcelona, Dunkirk, and Cattaraugus Creek Harbors after years of record high water levels and sediment build up which has made it so watercraft cannot enter some areas of the harbors and jeopardized the vibrant summer tourism season.

In addition, Schumer said the $2,000,000 for the Village of Mayville will construct a new water well, replacing existing contaminated wells to ensure that residents have continued access to safe clean water.

Mayville, which in the 1990’s was routinely rated as the home of some of New York’s best drinking water, has faced problems following accidental contamination of its drinking water infrastructure. The senator said that this funding would enable the village to revitalize the water system and

once again reliably deliver safe and clean water to its residents.

This funding comes on the heels of Schumer delivering $4 billion for Army Corps of Engineers operations & maintenance projects—like dredging and restoring breakwaters—in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The IIJA also delivered over $428 million for New York’s Drinking Water and Clean Water State Revolving Funds (SRF) for 2022.

SRFs provide below-market rate loans and grants to fund water infrastructure im-

provements. Importantly, Schumer fought for a lower state cost share for the early years of this funding and for 49% of the money to be

administered as grants and completely forgivable loans, ensuring New Yorkers can get the most out of this funding.

Did you know?

Disinfecting garden tools can help ensure the longterm health of plants and vegetables. According to the University of Minnesota Extension, plant pathogens, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, cause diseases that can damage and even kill plants. These pathogens can be transferred to plants and infect them through bits of soil and plant debris that get stuck on common gardening tools, including shovels and pruners. Pathogens are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, which is why even tools that appear clean may still contain harmful substances on their surfaces that can prove life-threatening to plants.

Disinfecting tools at the appropriate time, such as when the tools are being stored in fall or before using them in spring or after using them to remove infected plants, can prevent the damage caused

by invisible pathogens.

Avoid using strictly bleach to disinfect garden tools, as the UME notes that bleach corrodes metal and can therefore render tools that require sharp edges ineffective. A homemade solution that’s nine parts water and one part bleach can be used to effectively clean shovels, spades and rakes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in concentrations of 70 percent or more can effectively disinfect surfaces for bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Such a solution can be used to disinfect hand pruners and other small hand tools.

Store-bought cleaners with an active ingredient that is .1 percent alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium saccharinate also can be effective when disinfecting small hand tools as well as small pots and saucers.

Audubon Calling for Teams for Ambitious May Birdathon

Liberty, Audubon Community Nature Center’s nonreleasable Bald Eagle, is looking forward to her aviary being spruced up for the celebration in June of the 20th anniversary of her arrival at Audubon. Part of the funds raised at Audubon ’s annual May Birdathon will support this project.

JAMESTOWN, NY – There are so many great reasons to spend time outside looking for birds, especially during the spring migration season.

Audubon Community Nature Center’s (ACNC) annual Birdathon is a staff favorite because it combines birding with raising money for a cause.

Audubon is looking for birders to help fund the Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship, a new home for Audubon’s Snapping Turtle, and updates to the aviary and prep-room for Liberty, the non-releasable Bald Eagle.

There is no fee to participate.

Gather a friend or two and sign up as a team to spend up to 24 hours birding from Friday, April 29, 12:00 p.m. to May 8, 11:59 p.m., for this year’s Birdathon. Then spread the word to get friends and family to pledge your team by sharing the link to the Birdathon website, Go.RallyUp.com/ACNCBirdathon.

If you aren’t a birder, visit the website and support your favorite team and/or the cause.

Donors can contribute based on the number of birds seen or by making a flat contribution towards the cause.

This year’s “Top Birders” will receive special recognition through ACNC’s e-newsletter.

Prize packages and awards will be given out to the teams that see the most birds, raise the most money, or have the most unusual sighting.

The Birdathon is a great excuse to spend a day or week birding with your favorite “peeps.”

Last year’s teams included the Venerable Vultures, Birders on Bikes, and the Wrenegades.

Participants had a lot of fun getting out with others, discovering some interesting birds, and learning from each other along the way.

The Ryan Exline Memorial fund is a long-time beneficiary of the Birdathon. Exline was an integral part of the Audubon family for many years until he was tragically killed in an auto accident during his junior year at Duke University. Each year

this fund, created in his memory, provides a $500 scholarship to a college-bound high school student or a college student who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in an environmental field.

Even though it will be designed and constructed inhouse by staff members and volunteers, a new habitat for ACNC’s Snapping Turtle will cost close to $4,000. More than 15 years ago Snapper was found as a hatchling on a scorching hot parking lot and was immediately presumed dead.

He was later revived in some water and has been alive and well ever since as part of Audubon’s Animal Ambassadors program. That tiny turtle is now fully grown and much too large for the aquarium where he currently resides.

Liberty, ACNC’s resident Bald Eagle, will be celebrating her 20th anniversary at Audubon this June. Her aviary was built in the early 2000s by dedicated volunteers who put a great deal of time and energy into the construction process.

After 20 years, the Birdathon will support some new perches, boards, and other items to help spruce up the aviary in preparation for Liberty’s anniversary celebration.

In 2021, teams raised more than $7,000 that went towards the scholarship and the new wildlife habitat completed last summer. Be sure to check out the Birdathon website to see what teams are participating this year.
