Opera House Seeks Volunteers for 1891 Run

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is seeking volunteers to help with its 1891 Run on Sun., Apr. 24, at 9am. The 5K Run/ Walk will begin and end in front of the Village Hall and Opera House.

Volunteers are needed to help with the annual event, especially to help control traffic along the race route, which includes Temple St., Central Ave., and Brigham Rd. Volunteers are needed for no more than three hours, and possibly less depending on the task.

The event is the major fund-raiser for the Opera House. This is the fifth year of the run, and the first year that it is one of the featured races in

the Chautauqua Striders Runner of the Year series.

Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth Invites You to Help Shape the Future of Mayville’s Waterfront

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, NY – The Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG), the Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC), and the Village of Mayville invite all local residents, business owners, and stakeholders to learn about the draft Master Plan for Lakeside Park and the West Lake Road (SR 394) corridor, and provide your feedback on the Mayville Strategic Waterfront Activation effort.

The Village of Mayville’s Lakeside Park is a community resource with cultural, recreational, and scenic value. The historic train depot, boat launch, beach, floating stage, and other amenities have established Lakeside Park as a local and regional asset. However, park facilities have degraded over time and some of the properties surrounding the park are underutilized.

There is a growing need to assess Lakeside Park and the West Lake Road (SR 394) corridor, and identify necessary and opportune improvements. The objectives of this effort are to understand the existing conditions within and surrounding Lakeside Park, collect public input to identify key issues and opportunities, and develop a Master Plan for facility enhancements and funding opportunities. The Plan is intended to identify

improvements that could be achieved within a 5-10 year timeframe, and to support the Village and County in pursuing grant funding to implement such improvements.

Mayor Shearer stated, "It has been such a pleasure working with Barton and Loguidice and Chautauqua County and Partnership for

Economic Growth on this important project for the residents and guests of Mayville. Everyone did a great job getting people involved in the project. NCLSD DIRECTOR RECOGNIZED AS PUBLIC WORKS LEADER OF THE YEAR Scott Cummings Receives 2021 Public Works Leader of the Year Awards

MAYVILLE, NY – Scott Cummings, the Director of the North Chautauqua Lake Sewer District, recently received two awards from the American Public Works Association (APWA). He received the 2021 Public Works Leader of the Year Award from the New York State Chapter and from the Western New York (WNY) APWA. The award is presented annually to an individual who works in the public sector and recognizes their commitment to helping the public and improving communities in New York State.

Cummings first began his career with the North Chautauqua Lake Sewer District in 1992 as a Wastewater Maintenance Mechanic II. He was then appointed as the District’s Director in 2017. He also serves as Director of the Portland Pomfret Dunkirk Sewer District.

said Pierre Chagnon, Chautauqua County Legislature Chairman. “His extensive list of awards, commendations, letters of appreciation, and certifications span 33 years as a fire fighter, fire chief, fire investigator, and County employee. It has been my honor and privilege to assist Scott in his exemplary and dedicated service of those served by the North Chautauqua Lake Sewer District, The Portland Pomfret Dunkirk Sewer District, the North County Industrial Sewer District, and the North County Industrial Water District. He is a true hero and most deserving of this recognition as he approaches retirement.”

During his tenure as Director, Cummings helped implement the Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements project to remove 90 percent of phosphorus from the North end of Chautauqua Lake and the Village of Mayville’s wastewater effluent, “Scott Cummings is a which earned the Western paragon of public service,” New York American Public

Works Association’s Project of the year award for 2018. He also helped put an agreement together between the North Chautauqua Lake Sewer District and the Town of Chautauqua for sewage treatment services for the Chautauqua Height Sewer District to help the Town meet the Phosphorus removal requirements for Chautauqua Lake. Over the last several years, Cummings has been working to help improve the sewage collection system around the North end of Chautauqua Lake and on Lake Erie in the Van Buren areas to reduce inflow and infiltration into the systems to try to reduce treatment costs.

“I thank Legislative Chairman Pierre Chagnon for submitting my name for this award,” said Cummings. “It has been a true honor working with and for the people of Chautauqua County, one of the greatest places in our great country to live and raise a family. I have always been proud to live and work in Chautauqua County.

Thank you for giving me the honor to represent the hard working people of our area.”

“I applaud Scott on this well-deserved achievement,” said Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel. “Over the years, he has gone above and beyond to serve the over 1,300 customers that encompass the North Chautauqua Lake Sewer District and to improve the water quality of Chautauqua Lake.”

The WNY APWA is one of five branches in the New York Chapter. It actively supports the Public Works community by promoting the advancement of improved practices to serve the best interests of the public. It also provides opportunities for member interaction, participation and training.

Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene Attends Mental Health Conversations Week at Westfield Academy and Central School

Education teacher at Westfield Academy and Central School approached CCDMH. Through Hitchcock’s role in the school he said, “I have noticed an increased need for a more in-depth discussion on mental health in general. I had reached out to CCDMH to come into my classes to share their knowledge on this topic in hopes of providing additional resources and opening some additional doors for my students to access if needed, and I believe this was accomplished.”

The programming provided by CCDMH focused on normalizing mental health challenges, stress management, providing strategies on stress management, and exploring ways, we can better navigate ig emotions such as depression, anxiety, and anger. Christina Breen, Mental Health Trainer and Coordinator said, “It is vital to tell stories and share experiences. For young people, they tend to feel things in big ways, and those experiences when we are younger are valid; they ARE big. We want to shift the conversation to exploring ways to get through those big things. We also want young people to know that they are not alone.

To know that many of us of have gone through similar experiences and have made it through.

We have to provide practical solutions along with hope.”

According the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people ages 10 - 34. There are many reasons young people find it difficult to reach out; social stigma and lack of knowledge around resources are often the biggest barriers.

Carri Raynor, Mental Health Trainer and Coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Alliance said, “We should talk about the stigma behind mental health and suicide because it prevents many of us from reaching out for help. When we talk about suicide, we recognize this could be the result of a mental health crisis.

Mental health matters and seeking help should be encouraged. There are many national and local resources for young people. We were so glad to be invited to Westfield, to talk about hope and to share resources.”

Brinkley, Middle School Counselor and Scott Cooper, High School Counselor.

Brinkley said, “It’s vital for us to continue our efforts to destigmatize mental health issues by talking to youth, and the logical place to start these discussions is in schools.

Empowering students to ask for help when they are struggling, and delivering the message that asking for assistance is BRAVE, is so important today.”

Counselors were encouraged to participate in the conversations, normalizing that adults struggle too.

This helps strengthen trust and connection between teachers and students, making it easier for young people to reach out.

Cooper said, “Students were given tips, tools, and tricks to help improve their mental health, and outreach, if needed. It was an outstanding program and I highly recommend the program for all schools.”

Prioritizing the mental health of students in our County starts with these important conversations. Thereare many trainings and resources that CCDMH can provide to local school districts in Chautauqua County, in addition to school-based behavioral health clinics in Jamestown and Dunkirk schools. CCDMH employees have an unstoppable passion for shifting the mental health culture in the community.

Brinkley emphasized the impact from the programming by saying, “CCDMH provides a valuable resource for schools when it comes to leading talks on what can be some sensitive topics for young people regarding mental health.”
