JAMESTOWN,NY – Coin dealers from western New York and northwest Pennsylvania will be at the Jamestown Coin Club Spring Show, Sunday, March 27, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

They will be buying, selling, and offering free appraisals of United States, ancient, and foreign coins.

Coin supplies will also be available for purchase.

If you have coins you want to sell or trade or just learn their value, or if you would like to buy some coins to add

to your collection, this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.

Admission is free at the Celoron American Legion – Herman Kent Post 777 at 26 Jackson Avenue, just off Fairmount Avenue, in Jamestown/West Ellico¢, N.Y. Except for December, the Jamestown Coin Club meets regularly on the fourth Tuesday of the month, also at the Legion. Doors open at 6 p.m. and meetings begin at 7 p.m.

Opera House to Present Celtic Concert FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center presents Sue Tillotson and Jim Cunningham in concert on Fri., Mar. 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes that “in accordance with the changes in guidelines from New York State and from the CDC, and because the transmission level in Chau-

tauqua County has declined to a LOW status, masks are no longer required at Fredonia Opera House events.

We do still encourage patrons to wear masks while in the venue; and staff and volunteers will continue to be masked.” He adds that the Opera House Board and staff are grateful for everyone’s cooperation during the previous masking requirement.

Sue Tillotson and Jim Cunningham both hail from western NY and have played music together for many years, bringing a love of Celtic music and exciting instrumentation to their audiences.

Cornell Cooperative Extension shares why taking down bird feeders can help stop the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

SOUTHWEST, NEW YORK– Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a serious, fatal disease of poultry that is at top of mind for many. Since the beginning of the year, it’s been identified in over 350 wild birds in 20 states, including New York. New York has also had 3 cases of HPAI to date in backyard poultry flocks, which resulted in the death of 268 birds. It is up to us as good friends and neighbors to help protect domestic poultry flocks. One of the ways that we can do this is to take down our wild bird feeders for a li le while.

While this disease is mostly carried by wild waterfowl, research has shown that other wild bird populations can carry it too, especially if they share nesting and feeding grounds with wild waterfowl. These populations include perching birds and songbirds. For this reason, we are recommend-

ing that folks that feed wild birds should take down their bird feeders until the threat of the disease has passed.

It is uncertain as to when it will be safe to put feeders back out, but scientists believe that case loads should decrease over the summer months. The highest risk of spreading the disease is now, during the spring migration. That said, this is a disease of the colder months, and we may see cases spike again during the fall migration.

For those who have poultry at home, taking down bird feeders is especially important. Additional ways to protect flocks include a.) keeping your flock away from wild birds, especially wild waterfowl b.) keeping people who aren’t responsible for poultry care away from your flock, and c.) if you must visit other poultry or areas that wild birds frequent, change into clean clothing and footwear before entering poultry housing.

This disease can cause unusual deaths and illness in both wild and domestic

birds. Concerns about dead or sick wild birds can be directed to your local Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) office.

Unusual whole-flock illnesses or deaths in poultry can be directed to NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets: 5 18-457-3502; the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture): 866536-7593; or your local Cornell Cooperative Extension Office.

Borrello announces re-election bid in 58th Senate District

BY RICK MILLER JAMESTOWN — State Sen. George M. Borrello officially announced he is seeking re-election to the New York State Senate to represent the 58th District.

The newly confi gured district, created as a result of redistricting, will encompass Chautauqua, Ca araugus, Allegany and Wyoming counties, as well as the southern part of Erie County.

“I am grateful every day for the privilege of serving the people of the Western Southern Tier. This region is my home and there is nothing more important than ensuring its future,” Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, said.

The senator said he feels fortunate that the 58th District will include most of the 57th, with the addition of Wyoming County and a southern portion of Erie County.

“Since being elected to the Senate in 2019, the challenges facing New York have been wholly unprecedented,” Borrello said. “From the public health concerns and economic upheaval related to the COVID-19 pandemic, to the multiple scandals and eventual resignation of our former governor, to the harmful pro-criminal agenda and economic consequences of radical special interest-driven policies, New York state is a cautionary tale of what can happen when there are no checks and balances in state government.”

Approaching what he called a crucial election in 2022, Borrello said the stakes for New York “have never been higher.” In just three years, he said the damage done by what he called the progressive Democratic leadership has been severe.

“Nothing underscores this more than the disastrous bail ‘reform’ that Democrats forced into law in 2019,” he said. “From day one, the

strongest push back against these harmful changes has come from me and my Republican colleagues. One of the reasons that I am running again is to ensure that the momentum we started continues until these critical issues get addressed.”

Borrello said he also wants to continue efforts to advocate for lower taxes and policies that will reverse the outmigration of residents, to protect family farms, to support small businesses and to “bring common-sense” to the state’s renewable energy policies.

Among the achievements Borrello is most proud of is the enactment of Nourish NY into a permanent program, benefiting farmers and food insecure New Yorkers in the years ahead. He is

also encouraged by the progress made on rural broadband access, advocating for small businesses and securing the region’s fair share of state resources.

“My core mission remains providing the highest level of constituent service to the people in our district,” Borrello said. “Over the past three years we’ve helped thousands of residents who reached out to us for assistance accessing state pro-

grams or benefits and resolving problems. We’ve been instrumental in facilitating regional economic development projects and infrastructure upgrades and honoring the achievements of our veterans and other exceptional residents.”

In what he called three short years, Borrello said a strong foundation has been built.

“However, there is still important work to be done and ba les to be won on behalf of the hardworking, law-abiding people of our region and across the state,” he said. “I look forward to sharing that message and my agenda for change with voters in the coming months.”

A graduate of Fredonia High School and Purdue University in Indiana, Borrello was a small business founder and executive when he was elected to the Chautauqua County Legislature in 2009. In 2017, he was elected county executive.

When former state Sen. Catharine Young resigned in March 2019, Borrello announced his candidacy for the seat and easily won a special election over Democrat Austin Morgan, a young Democrat from Freedom, in the November 2019 election.

In November 2021, he defeated Ca araugus County Democratic Chairman Frank Puglisi of Lyndon.

Borrello will face Fredonia Democrat Sharon Neratko, a nurse, in the November election.

City To Hold Annual Turn The River Green Event On Saturday March 19th JAMESTOWN– The City of Jamestown will be holding it’s annual “Turn the River Green” Event, which will take place on Saturday, March 19th, at 11:00 a.m. along the

Jamestown Riverwalk. The Board of Public Utilities, with assistance from a local Leprechaun, will turn the Chadakoin River green in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day!

The event will be held along the Riverwalk and the Main Street Bridge, near the Blarney Stone. Celtic music will be playing, adding to the Irish festivities.

Empowering Girls Globally by Supporting Equitable Access to Education (Family Features) Sometimes forgo en amidst the pandemic that upended the world is a global learning crisis that forced more than 1.6 billion children out of school.

This immense loss of learning and development resulted in permanent setbacks for an entire generation – disproportionately affecting girls, according to a joint report between UNICEF, UNESCO and the World Bank. More than 10 million girls who le school temporarily as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns may never return. Dropping out of school can negatively impact girls for their entire lives. In terms of child marriage, this pandemic could force 10 million more girls to marry by 2030.

Even in times of crisis, girls have an equal right to

Advocate for the Keeping Girls in School Act One way to take action in the fi ght for girls’ education is by urging members of Congress to co-sponsor and help pass the Keeping Girls in School Act. This bipartisan act would empower girls around the world by authorizing the U.S. Agency for International Development to enter into innovative and result-based grant programs that reduce barriers adolescent girls face in receiving educations. By investing in girls’ educations, barri-

ers such as child marriage, harassment, violence, care burdens and negative gender norms keeping girls from long-term, quality education can be put to an end. Evidence shows enrolling and keeping girls in school results in a positive impact on their health and economic prosperity as well as the improvement of the security of their communities and countries.

Support Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programs Accessible WASH programs can help prevent girls from missing school and falling into child labor, adolescent pregnancy and forced

marriage. For many girls, schools provide a lifeline, offering vital information and support (on-site or through referral services) for nutrition; menstrual hygiene management; and broader psychosocial, sexual and reproductive health needs.

Annually, UNICEF invests $1 billion in WASH programs in more than 110 countries. These funds go toward building solar-powered

water pumps for communities; providing education on and products for menstrual hygiene management; equipping schools with private changing rooms, single-sex bathrooms and handwashing stations; and more.
