BY JIM ECKSTROM CUBA — U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney is a newcomer to what will be the 23rd Congressional District — but she points out to people she meets in its expected boundaries that she has roots in the region.

“My mother’s family lived on a farm in Chenango County,” she told a small gathering of Republicans Thursday at The Kopper Keg on Cuba’s Main Street during a low-key swing through Allegany County. Her family business has also been based

in Chenango County since 1946.

“The 23rd is a lot like the district I actually represent right now,” she said, referencing agricultural interests and small-town values throughout much of the 22nd Congressional District.

But after New York Democrats came up with a gerrymandered plan that eliminates most of the existing 22nd District, Tenney, R-New Hartford, won’t represent her hometown or the Utica area. She has set her sights on the 23rd, which —

was more winnable than the carved-up 22nd, Tenney has pledged she will live within the 23rd — despite New York state law that says she doesn’t have to.

Tenney pledged to be “very aggressive and a strong advocate” for the reconfigured 23rd District, which she expects to remain as drawn by New York’s Democrats — despite legal challenges of the state’s congressional district map for 2022.

when all is settled — should include all of Cattaraugus, Allegany, Chautauqua, Steuben, Chemung and Tioga counties and parts of Erie, Wyoming, Livingston, Chenango, Cortland, Schuyler, Yates and Broome counties.

“Fourteen counties ... it takes 4 1/2 hours to drive across the district,” Tenney said. “But I look forward to the challenge.”

Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) is awarding a total of $1,200 in prize money to the winners of its 2022 Nature Photography Contest. Full details of the competition can be found and submissions are now being accepted at GoGoPhotoContest.com / ACNCPhotoContest.

A mixed panel of professional and amateur photographers will choose a Youth (ages 8 to 18) and an Adult (age 19 and older) winner in the categories of Fauna and Landscapes / Waterscapes.

Each of those four winners will receive a $200 cash prize. The panel will also name three Youth and three Adult finalists.

Fauna includes any wild animal; no photos of animals in captivity, such as pets, zoos, or rehab animals. Landscapes / Waterscapes can be mountains, forests, fields, deserts, etc.; or oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks, etc.

Additional $200 cash prizes will be awarded to the Adult and Youth photos receiving the most Community Choice votes online, and three each will receive finalist recognition.

A photo could receive both the Community Choice and a judged award.

Winning and finalist photographs will be displayed on the contest website along with the photographers’ names and cities of residence. ACNC will print the winning photographs to exhibit in the Nature Center, and winners and finalists will be announced in a news release that is widely distributed, including to their local media when known.

Deadline for submission of photographs is Sunday, August 28, 2022. The sooner photographs are submitted, the longer the public can vote on them for the Community Choice award.

SUNY Fredonia Job/ Internship Expo set to return in early March FREDONIA – SUNY Fredonia’s Career Development Office (CDO) will host its annual Job and Internship Expo on Wednesday, March 2, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia.

The event is free and open to current students as well as SUNY Fredonia alumni.

The CDO did not hold the expo last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Job & Internship Expo is expected to bring to campus more than 80 organization representatives to discuss their potential job and internship openings with candidates. Areas are expected to include business, energy, financial services, manufacturing, health care, technology, health and human service

agencies, retail management, government, law enforcement and many other fields, offering full- and part-time positions, summer jobs and/or paid or forcredit internships.

Organizations expected to participate are based in Erie (N.Y.) and Chautauqua counties, as well as the Rochester area and throughout New York State. In addition, there will be several out-of-state organizations participating. Many organizations will be represented

by Fredonia alumni.

City of Jamestown sets youth recreation baseball league sign-up date JAMESTOWN, NY – The City Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department would like to announce sign-ups for the City Recreation Youth Baseball League will take place Thursday, March 10th from 5:00 p.m.

– 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of City Hall, 200 E. 3rd Street and on Saturday, March 12th at the Parks Office located at 115 Fairmount Ave., from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

The program is open to youth ages 7 to 12 years old.

Children of 7 years of age will only be allowed to play in the outfield.

City residents must pay a $5.00 registration fee per child. Non-city residents must pay a $15.00 registra-

tion fee per child. All children registering must supply proof of age. Children who played in the program in previous years must still sign up by March 12th and pay the registration fee.

The age determination date is APRIL 30, 2022.

Whatever a player’s age is

on or before April 30, 2022 is the player’s LEAGUE age for the 2022 season. This playing age rule corresponds with that adopted by Babe Ruth Baseball.

Rep. Tenney continued from 1 R-Corning, who represents the current 23rd District through 2022, is retiring from Congress. He had endorsed Steuben County GOP Chairman Joe Sempolinski, a former Reed aide, but Sempolinski announced earlier this month he will not run.

Republicans in the western Southern Tier also were eager for former state Sen. Catharine M. Young to run, but she declined as well. State Sen. George Borrello, R-Chautauqua County, hasn’t formally stated that he won’t run, but Tenney’s campaign chest that was expected to hold $2 million by the end of this month is a formidable deterrent.

No Democrats have emerged as candidates. The filing deadline is April 7 and the primary is scheduled for June 28.

Retracing routes For her part, Tenney said that retracing some of the old Southern Tier sales routes

she traveled for her family’s printing company has spurred her to run even more.

“So many former customers along the Southern Tier, a lot of them are not in business anymore,” she said. “I just want to do everything I can to bring more jobs here ... that’s why I really wanted to run for Congress.”

Noting that she was impressed by what appeared to be a healthy business district in Cuba, Tenney nevertheless said that with New York’s high taxes and regulations, “COVID finished a lot of (business) people off. I know so many longtime owners of restaurants and businesses who had to shut down because they just couldn’t survive.”

An attorney who practiced constitutional law before she stepped into politics, Tenney said she weighs all her congressional votes based on constitutionality. She said she believes “self-governance” is critical to the health of the nation and she regrets this chapter in the United States’ history when she sees too many “young people who don’t understand what freedom means.”

many of them would like to take the nation — reminds her of the time she spent as a young woman in the former Yugoslavia, a socialist country that had been ruled by a “benevolent dictator,” Josip Tito.

“It was lovely ... but it was not the United States,” Tenney said, recalling the lack of goods at grocery stores and noting that Yugoslavs remembered the days that those who spoke against Tito could be shipped to a penal island.

“Most people in the U.S. don’t know what that’s like,” she said, while suggesting she sees concerning signs that many Democrats would veer the nation toward that sort of socialistic control.

“Before you know it they are telling you what to do and when you can do it,” she said.

Tenney said she wishes there was more bipartisanship in Congress, but she frankly blames unyielding far-left Democrats who retaliate against colleagues who show even hints of moving to the center.

“I’ve had Democrats tell me, ‘I’d love to sign on to that bill, but not right now ... see me after the election and the House flips,’” she said, referring to the strong possibility of the Republicans retaking

the majority in the House this fall. “A lot of progressive Democrats are vicious, they have a lot of money and they play to win.”

Elections debate Because of legal wrangling over the slimmest of margins in her election win (by eight votes) in the 22nd District, Tenney was not yet seated in the House for the certification of President Joe Biden’s win over former President Donald Trump. She would have liked to see more evidence of alleged voting irregularities brought to light to make a more informed decision.

She did indicate that too many changes to voting rules were allowed, mostly because of the pandemic and particularly in battleground states.

On the debate over voting laws in various states, including New York, she pointed out that New Hampshire has no early voting and individuals must have a valid excuse to receive an absentee ballot.

“Yet New Hampshire has the highest rate of voter participation than any other state,” she said. “They see it as a civic responsibility” with no need for increasing voting days and mail-in voting.

The Tapestry Resilience Initiative Partners With Jamestown Pediatrics To Support Local Families With Healthysteps Program JAMESTOWN--The Tapestry Resilience Initiative is working with local pediatric primary care providers in Chautauqua County to support our youngest community members and their families with the HealthySteps Programs and creating awareness of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Learn the Signs.

Act Early.

HealthySteps is a nationally recognized program under ZeroToThree. Pediatrician offices are a consistent place where children are seen for well visits regularly more times than not. The HealthySteps program motto is to meet families where they are at, with people they trust.

HealthySteps Specialists are placed in primary care practices to recognize whether children are reaching developmental milestones, to fill in services gaps, connect families with additional services, and support further development education. The main program goal is to ensure all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life.

“Our entire practice received training on this national best practice model (HealthySteps) and we built a provider-specific plan of

approach after our program training,” said Dr. Liz Daniels of Jamestown Pediatrics.

“While practice plans have similarities, each practice owns their own plan. This is important to fit the culture of the practice and of each family served. HealthySteps fits the culture of Jamestown Pediatrics.”

Tapestry has collaborated with Jamestown Pediatrics to offer this program to their patients. The office has a HealthySteps specialist, a member of their healthcare team who can provide additional time and attention when needed to families with young children. Working with the team, the specialist can provide support, assessments and referrals to ensure that the practice can meet each family’s unique strengths and culture. Along with Dr. Daniels, team members have seen many examples of the impact the HealthySteps program has on their patients.

Rachel Ludwig, Tapestry Director said, “The goal of a HealthySteps Specialist is to provide high quality services in a timely way to the families that are seen in the Jamestown Pediatrics practice. It is rewarding to see that

those involved enjoy working with all of the providers and getting to know all the families who receive care here.

They have a family-centered environment and have experienced many wonderful stories full of hope from this (HealthySteps) work.”

The program can serve as the inspiration for practices to look to, for and with other system solutions, supports and best practice opportunities. At the practice, the Specialist started a clothes and supply closet for their patients in need of these items.

The closet is donation based and the practice continually receives the community’s support of the families they see.

The goal of the Tapestry Resilience Initiative is to provide safe and engaging trauma-informed services to prevent mental, emotional and behavioral disorders and to identify and address concerns as early as possible and strengthen existing collaboration among community groups and forge effective coordination to provide the needed supports and services for children, youth, and their families. This collaboration with Jamestown Pediatrics is an excellent example of this

coordination.
