NCCF Accepting Letters of Interest for Community Benefit Grants Dunkirk, NY — The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation (NCCF) will accept letters of interest for the Community Benefit Grants Program through March 1, 2022. The presentation will be held during the regular meeting of the County Legislature, which starts at

SUNY Fredonia Chamber Choir ready to sing at ACDA eastern conference FREDONIA, NY – The rare distinction of being selected to perform at an American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Conference has been bestowed upon the Chamber Choir at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Only 17 choirs drawn from nine Northeastern states were selected to participate in the ACDA’s 2022 conference to be held Feb. 9 to 12 in Boston. Only one other choir from New York State, the Treble Choir from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College CUNY, was chosen.

“This is a tremendous honor not only for the Chamber Choir, but for our incredible Voice program, as well as the entire School of Music," remarked Dr. Vernon Huff, who serves as director of Choral Activities and conductor of the Chamber Choir.

“Having a choir perform at an American Choral Directors Association convention really brings the program into an elite status. The standards are very high and the competition is tough,” Dr. Huff noted. “Only four collegiate choirs were selected to perform at the Eastern Division's conference this year, so we are very humbled by that.”

The Fredonia choir will

be the third of three choirs to give two concerts, at 3 and 5 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 11, at the Old South Church, built during the Gilded Age and considered one of America’s finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture.

A rigorous audition process was used to select choirs for the conference, with Fredonia representing the very best of choral programs in the northern United States, from Maryland to Maine, Huff said. He picked three selections that he felt best represented the Chamber Choir.

The conference committee this year was interested in showcasing living and minority composers, Huff indicated, so he pulled together a program that was challenging and also reflected the diversity of choral music that’s currently available.

“That is tough, because there is so much great choral music being arranged and composed right now,” Huff remarked. Submitted programs had to be 25 minutes in length while allowing for any applause or stage changes.

The Chamber Choir is typically composed of 24 singers, split evenly between sopranos/altos and tenors/basses. Its roster is chosen following auditions held during the first week of classes, Huff noted, “and

then, it's off to the races.

Everything we do between August and February will be focused on the convention performance. But I know that our wonderful students will step up and meet the challenge,” he said. “They always do!”

Reaction to the choir’s selection from current students and alumni has been universally positive, Huff noted, when the School of Music posted the announcement.

“I am thrilled for the Chamber Choir to represent our amazing Voice area at the convention. There are truly wonderful things happening in our choral/opera/ voice programs and it will be a thrill to show our neighbors from around the eastern division,” Huff said.

Fredonia is also connected to the Queens College’s choir, whose director, Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education Eric Rubinstein, earned a Mus.B. in Music Education at Fredonia in 2008.

Dr. Rubinstein indicated he’s proud to be a graduate of the Fredonia School of Music, saying that he owes much of his professional success to the experiences he received during his undergraduate study. “Not only does Fredonia offer a high-quality music education, but a safe

space to try new things, and a network of support by colleagues and faculty alike. I felt truly cared for at Fredonia,” Rubinstein said.

Rubinstein went on to earn a M.M. and D.M.A., both in Choral Conducting, from Michigan State University and Louisiana State University, respectively.

“It is because of my training from Fredonia that I am a creative, flexible and compassionate educator,” Rubinstein said. “My love for choral music and music education is inspired by my work with Dan Ihasz, Laura Dornberger and the late Gerald Gray, and I continue to see their guidance reflected in my own teaching,” he said.

School of Music Interim Director Daniel Ihasz remembers Rubinstein being deeply involved in choir, dance and opera at Fredonia, and he also earned a minor in Dance. Rubinstein was also one of Mr. Ihasz’ students in the New York State Summer School of the Arts choral program before enrolling at Fredonia for his undergraduate degree.

The last time a Fredonia choir was invited to perform at an ACDA convention, also held in Boston, was in 1986, when Dr. Donald P. Lang was its director.

Health Department Announces Upcoming COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics MAYVILLE, NY – The Chautauqua County Health Department urges unvaccinated residents to access vaccine, and for those who are fully vaccinated to get a booster dose if their second dose was at least five months ago for the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or two months ago for the J&J vaccine. Community vaccination clinics are planned for the coming weeks.

First, second, and third doses, as well as booster shots will be provided to any eligible persons, as long as supplies last. That’s important, as lab-created gemstones resemble diamonds and may not be detectable if jewelers are using testing equipment designed to identify cubic zirconia.

Colored gemstones Colored gemstones are very popular, and the BBB notes that various new stone treatments have been developed to improve their appearance and durability.

However, the BBB also notes that such treatments may adversely affect the value of the gem and necessitate special care in order to maintain the gem’s appearance.

Diamonds The BBB notes that diamonds’ value is based on color, cut, clarity, and carat.

Often referred to as the “4 Cs,” this criteria refers to the grade of the color (color), the way the diamond is finished (cut), how flawless the diamond is (clarity), and its weight (carat).

When shopping for diamonds, the BBB advises asking jewelers if they have the most up-to-date testing

and, as a result, is typically mixed with other metals to improve its hardness and durability. The karat-quality marking indicates what proportion of gold is mixed with other metals. For example, the most common mark for gold jewelry is 18K of 750, which signifies an item is 75 percent gold. Lower-karat gold jewelry may include copper, silver, zinc, or other metals.

Consumers should ask about these alloys and determine if the item’s ultimate recipient is allergic to certain met-

als or if he or she has a high acid content in their bodies.

Few things can elicit “oohs and aahs” on Valentine’s Day as much as decadent desserts.

Sweets and romance seem tailor-made for each other.

That’s why heart-shaped boxes of chocolate and other sweets are snatched up in droves and handed out like, well, candies, come February 14.

According to Nielsen Product Insider, Valentine’s Day chocolate sales reached nearly $11 billion in 2018, and candy generated $695 billion in sales.

In terms of baked goods, the top-selling items sold during Valentine’s Day included dipped/covered treats, message cookies, iced cookies, cupcakes, and two- to fivecount doughnuts. Wine,

chocolate and strawberries also are very popular Valentine’s treats.

Those pondering giving something sweet this year can consider the following desserts.

Bananas Foster: This treat is made from bananas and vanilla ice cream. A sauce made from butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, dark rum, and banana liqueur is placed over the cooked bananas and ignited like a flambé to create a caramelized dessert.

2. Black forest cake: This chocolate cake marries layers of chocolate sponge cake with a rich cherry filling.

It is based on the German dessert, schwarzwälder kirschtorte.

cream often tops off this rich cake.

3. Cannoli: These Italian pastries originated on the island of Sicily. They consist of tube-shaped fried pastry dough filled with a ricotta cheese-based cream.

4. Cheesecake: Cheesecake often is made with a crust of crushed cookies, graham crackers or sponge cake. A thick layer of batter made from sour cream, cream cheese, eggs, and sugar is cooked into a semi-soft consistency.

Some cheesecakes are light and fluffy, while others are dense and decadent.

5. Chocolate truffles: Not to be mistaken for their fungi cousins, chocolate truffles are made by forming balls out of chocolate ganache (made from heavy cream and melted chocolate), and rolling them in cocoa powder.

6. Cream puffs: These tasty morsels are made from

a French choux pastry dough filled with a moist filling of sweet cream or custard.

7. Napoleon: The French offer a layered dessert, and it comes by way of mille feuille, also known as a Napoleon pastry. Puff pastry dough sandwiches vanilla custard or cream in various layers.

8. Tiramisu: Meaning “pick me up,” tiramisu is the Italian take on a layered dessert made from ladyfingers cookies dipped in coffee and a whipped mixture of mascarpone cheese and cream, topped with cocoa.

Chautauqua County’s COVID-19 Mitigation Efforts during Winter Surge MAYVILLE, NY — Since the emergence of COVID-19’s Delta variant in August, and the Omicron variant in November of 2021, Chautauqua County has enacted a multifaceted approach directed at mitigating the community spread of COVID-19, and reducing strain on local medical care facilities.

During the period of heightened community transmission following the 2021 holiday season, Chautauqua County distributed over 40,000 at home COVID-19 tests, 48,000 KN95 facemasks, and over 10,000 cloth facemasks.
