Chautauqua Fallen Heroes Scholarships Awarded DUNKIRK, NY — The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation recently assisted the Chautauqua Fallen Heroes Scholarship committee in presenting the Chautauqua Fallen Heroes Scholarship awards. This year the commi ee proudly awarded scholarships to Connor Dispense and Justin Powell.

Connor, a graduate of Brocton High School, is attending Hilbert College to study Criminal Justice.

Growing up watching his mother in her career as a corrections officer, Connor says

he has aspired to a career in law enforcement “for as long as I can remember.” In his application essay, he described such a career as providing an opportunity to make a difference in the world.

Justin i s a ending SUNY Fredonia, majoring in Criminal Justice, following his graduation from Fredonia High School. Justin is an Eagle Scout and credits his time in Scouting for teaching him the values of nature and the importance of preservation.

He is pursuing a career as a Conservation Officer. A

Conservation Officer helps manage and protect natural resources, wildlife, and ecosystems or enforces environmental and conservation laws and policies.

The Chautauqua Fallen Heroes Fund was established at the NCCF in the fall of 2001. The primary purpose of this fund is to provide support to the families of county heroes – fi refi ghters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other local uniformed heroes – who have been killed or critically debilitated in the line of

duty. The fund also provides scholarships to students interested in careers in public safety. To qualify, applicants must be pursuing a career in law enforcement, fi refi ghting, or emergency medical services.

RIPLEY, NY – On January 25, 2022, the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency (CCIDA) approved incentives for ConnectGen Chautauqua County LLC’s South Ripley Solar Project, a 270 megawa (MW) large-scale solar project located in South Ripley, wholly located within the town boundaries of Ripley. The Project will include a 20 MW ba ery energy storage component.

“This is a project that ConnectGen and the community have been working on for a couple of years,” said Mark Geise, Deputy County Executive for Economic Development/Chief Executive Officer of the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency. “The built-in certainty of guaranteed revenue made possible by the PILOT and Host Community Agreements will allow Ripley and Chautauqua County to make long-term fi nancial plans, and I’m glad that the CCIDA could assist the Town and ConnectGen in making it a reality.”

Doug Bowen, Town of Ripley Supervisor said, “This has been a long and sometimes challenging project; however, at the end of the day the revenue from this project will benefit the citizens of the Town for many years to come.”

ConnectGen has worked since late 2018 to introduce the Project to the Ripley community, meet with state agencies and local municipalities, and perform environmental studies. In August 2021, ConnectGen

fi led a 94-c Application for the Project, which provides extensive details regarding project design, environmental review, economic and community benefits, and potential impacts and mitigations. Subject to the receipt of necessary permits, it is anticipated that Project construction will commence in late 2022. The project is not expected to impact local farmlands currently producing dairy or cultivating vineyards.

Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel said, “This project is a win for the Town of Ripley, Chautauqua County, and the State of New York. We are thrilled that we have the land and infrastructure to a ract this clean energy project to our area.”

Through the PILOT and Host Community Agreements, the Project is expected to contribute over $60 million in increased revenue to local taxing jurisdictions including the Town of Ripley, Chautauqua County, the Sherman Central School District, the Ripley Central School District, and the Ripley Volunteer Fire Department over its 30-plus-year lifespan.

In addition to the local tax benefits, local landowners are expected to receive more than $30 million in long-term revenue in the form of solar leases, easement agreements, and good neighbor agreements.

NCCF Accepting Service Learning Mini-Grant Program Applications DUNKIRK, NY – The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation is accepting applications for the Service Learning Mini-Grants Program for the 2022-23 school year. Awards will be announced in May. Local middle and high school teachers are encouraged to apply for projects that combine community service and classroom learning. Projects relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion are highly encouraged and strongly considered.

This year, six area schools received 13 grants totaling $5,244. Classrooms from all disciplines participate in this program: art, social studies, trades, science, and

more.

Opera House Cinema Series Features West Side Story FREDONIA, NY – The next fi lm in the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is the widely acclaimed “West Side Story.” It will be screened Sat., Jan. 29 and Tues., Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.

Ripley Pilot continued from 1 ment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) agreement, sales tax abatements, and a mortgage recording tax abatement for the project. According to Linda Burns, CCIDA Project Manager, the estimated fi nancial incentive package over the 30-year term is valued at approximately $88 million, while the projected state and regional benefits that are expected to result from the project are estimated at $238 million - a benefit to cost ratio of 3:1.

The company estimates that construction of the Project will create up to 200 family-wage construction jobs.

Once completed, the project will require two to four full time jobs for ongoing monitoring and maintenance.

Through its contracts with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, the project will contribute a significant amount of renewable energy to assist the State of New York in achieving its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goal to obtain 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, supplying enough electricity to power more than 55,000 average New York homes annually.

ConnectGen Chief Executive Officer, Caton Fenz, said “We want to thank the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency staff and board members, who put a tremendous amount of effort into our PILOT negotiations. This

Audubon Has Flowers and Butterflies for Your Valentine

Audubon is taking orders for carefully selected seed varieties that will grow into a summer-long bouquet that a racts Monarchs and other bu erfl ies.

ACNC’s Monarch Mix will grow plants that thrive in full to partial sun. Each set of seeds includes separate envelopes of Purple Coneflower, Lance-leafed Coreopsis, Swamp Milkweed, Blue Vervain, and Mexican Sunflower.

Seed sets are bundled and gi -wrapped together with a color photo booklet complete with planting instructions.

The Mexican Sunflowers, an annual plant, will bloom throughout the fi rst summer and fall to a ract migrating Monarchs while the

other native perennials will take a year or so to become fully established and bloom.

All of these seeds flourish in regular soil types and all of the perennials are found in Audubon’s native garden in front of the Nature Center.

Health Partners Request Participation in Community Health Survey MAYVILLE, NY– The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services is conducting a Community Health Assessment to gather information about Chautauqua County’s current health status, needs, and issues. The information will help to develop a Community Health Improvement Plan by justifying how and where resources should be used.

All county residents are encouraged to participate in this process by taking the Chautauqua County Community Health Survey.

Being part of the Community Health Assessment is a great way to help improve the health of your community. As a community member, you know the needs and strengths of your community. Your opinion and advice are important in deciding the health needs of Chautauqua County. Your responses to the health survey questions are confidential.
