The NCCF was honored to receive, along with the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and the United Ways of Northern and Southern Chautauqua County, the 2021 Pam Lydic Coalition Builder Award. Each year, the award is presented by the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce to recognize those that have helped to move the region forward through collaboration and by building partnerships.
Our group was recognized for our role in developing the Chautauqua County Crisis Response Fund for COVID-19. According to the Chamber, “The way our local community foundations and United Ways came together in a time of need speaks directly to the type of coalition building the Pam Lydic stood for.” Executive Director Diane Hannum reflected on the establishment of the fund, “Community foundations and united ways through-
out the country built similar covid relief funds, but Chautauqua County came together and got to work quicker than most. We brought people together, but the success was the direct result of the people who live and work in the county that recognized that we are stronger and have a greater impact when we work as one for the betterment of Chautauqua County.”

Chautauqua County Provides At Home COVID-19 Test Kits and KN95 Masks to Local Municipalities MAYVILLE, NY –Chautauqua County is distributing at home COVID-19 test kits and KN95 masks, which it received from New York State, to local municipalities. The local municipalities who requested the test kits and masks will then organize their own distribution efforts to get the items out to their residents. This effort is part of Chautauqua County’s multi-layered approach to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 during this period of heightened community transmission. The goal is to get test kits and facemasks out to residents of Chautauqua County in an equitable and efficient manner. The City of Jamestown will receive 500 test kits, the City of Dunkirk will receive 250 test kits, each town will receive 100 test kits, and each village will receive 50 test kits. The Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services began delivering the items to local municipalities last week and all municipalities who requested the items will

receive their deliveries by the end of this week. “I thank our mayors and supervisors for stepping up to assist with distributing these masks and test kits across the County,” said Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel. “Our goal is to make these items available in areas that are easily accessible to the public and our local municipalities are the perfect partner for this.
Some of these supplies may also be helpful for our local municipalities to keep their employees safe and to allow them to continue providing important services to their constituents.” Chautauqua County encourages residents to contact their local municipalities to see if they are participating in this program and to find out more about the distribution planned for their com-

Chautauqua County continues to advise residents to wear masks while in indoor public locations, especially when social distancing is not possible, as part of a multi-layered COVID-19 mitigation strategy. Many people get their first glimpse of spring blooms in April, while families of faith look forward to gathering for Passover and Easter. Each year in the United States, April 15 marks the official deadline for taxpayers to file their tax returns. Taxpayers in the United States must file their returns by this day or face penalties. Though the filing deadline may be in mid-April, it’s wise for taxpayers to begin preparing to submit their returns much earlier than that. MAYVILLE, NY - Winter months in Western New York can feel isolating and we know that mental wellness can be impacted by the seasons. With limited activities in the winter months, this was one of the reasons the Kick Cabin Fever (KCF) Indoor Triathlon was started. This year’s thirteenth annual event will take place on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 9 a.m. at Chautauqua Health and Fitness in the Turner Community Center at 4840 W. Lake Rd. in Chautauqua, N.Y. Cheryl Burns, a local triathlete began the indoor triathlon one year after her brother Marty Miller died by suicide due to several years of depression. The intent of this event is to get people moving during one of the toughest winter months in Chautauqua County. Burns said, “KCF was designed for everyone. This event is a reason to move, have fun, compete and enjoy some cool swag. This is a time where wonderful people come to cheer and/or help at a time where we can be pretty fed up with winter.” Carri Raynor, Coordinator of the Alliance said, “We know the word triathlon can be intimidating, but we want people to use this event as a way to get their body moving and to feel good. We encourage first timers as well as seasoned athletes. This is an opportunity to try something for the first time, and
have fun doing it. The three events; swim, bike, and run only last a total of 45 minutes, and you’ll find positive encouragement along the way.” Participants can register to complete the triathlon solo or as a team of three members. The cost is $35 per individual or $75 per team. There are approximately 20 volunteers, including friends and family, that make sure the day is fun and runs smoothly for competitors. All proceeds for the Kick Cabin Fever Indoor Triathlon stay in Chautauqua County for suicide prevention efforts. The Alliance was formed when local professionals from the mental health and other health care fields saw a great need in the community for supports and education around suicide prevention. Chautauqua County OFAS Director Appointed as President of the USAging Board of Directors MAYVILLE, NY – At the most recent USAging Annual Conference and Tradeshow, held virtually this summer, the membership association announced the appointment of its new president, Dr. Mary Ann Spanos, Director of the Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services, who was sworn in to serve a two-year term. Spanos joined the USAging Board of Directors in 2010 as an Alternate and became the delegate for Region II, New York and New Jersey, in 2016. USAging represents and supports the national network of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) and advocates for the Title VI Native American Aging Programs that provide critical services and supports that enable older adults and people with disabilities throughout the United States to live with optimal health, well-being, independence and dignity in their homes and communities. “USAging is delighted to have its Board of Directors guided by Dr. Mary Ann Spanos,” said USAging CEO Sandy Markwood. “Dr. Spanos brings unique experience and perspectives to USAging at a critical time for our nation’s older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers. She will also play an integral role in helping our association navigate the recent transition from being called the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging to now becoming USAging.” Spanos has spent her lifetime working with older adults. She was fortunate to grow up surrounded by family, especially grandparents, who encouraged and influenced her professional choices. She practiced physical therapy, specializing in geriatric rehabilitation, from 1986 until 2007, when she was appointed as Chautauqua County's Area Agency on Aging Director. Spanos sees the goals of physical therapy as aligned with those of AAAs, in that both focus on helping older adults and people with disabilities attain the highest level of autonomy and independence. “It is a privilege to serve on this national board and I am honored to be elected president by my colleagues across the country,” said Spanos. “While the pandemic continues to be a challenge, it has also brought a new awareness of the critical nature of the home and community
based services provided by the aging network. I am excited to be leading this organization while we are in the midst of expanding and modernizing our services to meet the needs of older adults.” “I applaud Dr. Mary Ann Spanos on her recent appointment as President of the USAging Board of Directors,” said PJ Wendel, Chautauqua County Executive. “Her hard work and dedication to providing services for seniors and caregivers across our county, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been monumental. Her appointment is a great accomplishment and I know she will proudly represent Chautauqua County and the other communities across our nation.” Spanos received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1986 and received her doctorate from Boston University in 2005. Bass Fest to underscore value of musicians having a diverse skillset FREDONIA, NY – The vital role that a diverse skillset can play in a musician’s pursuit of a successful career will be highlighted at Bass Fest 2022 at the State University of New York at Fredonia. “Career perspectives for the modern bassist” is the theme of the event to be held on Feb. 20. “As we enter the postCOVID music business, all musicians are facing more challenges than ever. We have also learned that diversity of skillset is in some ways no longer just an advantage, but an absolute necessity to thrive as a professional musician,” said Assistant Professor of Double Bass Kieran Hanlon. Multifaceted bassists Dennis Whitaker, opera orchestra principal, author and publisher and K-12 teacher, and Lloyd Goldstein, a certified music practitioner at the Moffitt Cancer Center of Tampa, Fla., composer and international soloist, will join Mr. Hanlon, a symphony orchestra player, jazz performer and member of
Fredonia’s School of Music faculty, in the day-long event. “We will be focused on sharing our experiences as individuals that can do many things at a high level, and the balancing act that goes with such a career through performances, classes and discussions,” Hanlon explained. The goal of open conversations is for attendees to gain inspiration and information that helps them build careers. How these pursuits interface with each other and with a healthy lifestyle will also be addressed. Applications Available for Chautauqua County's 2023 Occupancy Tax for Lakes and Waterways Grant Program JAMESTOWN,NY – The Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Development has announced applications for Chautauqua County’s 2% Occupancy Tax for Lakes and Waterways Grant Program are now available. The Occupancy Tax Grants for Lakes and Waterways are funded through the county’s five percent occupancy or bed tax for the rental of lodging units within the county. Two-fifths or two percent of the bed tax is used solely for the enhancement and protection of lakes and waterways in Chautauqua County. These grants provide $500 to $40,000 in funding for projects to be implemented from January 1 through December 31, 2023. “We anticipate that approximately $225,000 will be available for grant funded projects in 2023,” said Chautauqua County Watershed Coordinator Dave McCoy. “We encourage projects that leverage additional investment from land owners and other grant programs such Photo provided as the New York State De-
partment of Environmental Conservation’s Water Quality Improvement Program, where each local dollar leverages three state dollars. To date, the program has leveraged over $3 million for water quality improvement projects in Chautauqua County.” Applications may be submitted by various groups and organizations including; not-for-profits, governments, businesses and corporations, public and private schools, and all landowners of Chautauqua County. Successful projects funded under this program include but are not limited to streambank, shoreline, or ditch stabilization; sediment retention basins; buffer strips; and green infrastructure projects. “This innovative grant program is unique within New York State,” said Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel. “I encourage landowners and organizations to submit an application to improve the water quality and protect the lakes and waterways in Chautauqua
