Salamanca schools continue adapting to teaching amid COVID-19

SALAMANCA — With one month of reopening amid coronavirus under their belts, teachers and staff in the Salamanca City Central School District continue to adapt to a brave new world of education.

Principals from Salamanca’s three schools updated the Board of Education at its Tuesday meeting on how the hybrid and e-learning models have worked so far as the potential for more students coming into the buildings grows.

High School Principal Chris Siebert said the attendance and participation through e-learning has been mostly good except for a handful of students who repeatedly don’t check-in. He said a new daily COVID screening survey was recently implemented to count as

attendance.

“Just this week we opened the library as another (e-learning) hub.

This is serving as a hub for our juniors and seniors,” he said. “We are also in the process of getting office tables and chairs for our e-learning hub in the gym. These changes will make both locations more suitable and comfortable for learning and engagement.”

Siebert said a Native American tutoring room is open for students for individual and group help. Each grade level is monitoring the engagement of students with various teams of staff, he said, and some staff have done home visits or reached out to students who are struggling.

“It’s obviously a difficult time in the world and in education it’s not ideal, but

I feel like each day we are progressing and making strides to improve our teaching and learning,” he added.

Seneca Intermediate Principal Nicole Beaver said about 230 students are in school now on the hybrid schedule. She said all the teachers and staff have been working hard to make sure every student’s needs are met.

“It seems like we’re learning and adapting daily,” she said. “Having students in-person and remote adds a whole new level of teaching and I must say how proud I am of how the Seneca teachers are doing.”

Beaver said the school has been focusing on the social and emotional health of students since school resumed, using several avenues to make

sure students’ needs are met and let them know the school staff believes in them and are there for them.

“Overall, Seneca is at a really good place right now,” she added. “Everything is becoming a little more comfortable for everyone.”

Prospect Elementary Principal Gayle Pavone said their hybrid model sees about 55 percent of students coming into school. She said they’ve been trying to meet family’s schedules for e-learning and a “power hour” in the evening for ELA and math help.

“Students are really following a great routine when they come into the building,” she said. “We’ve made sure that we are doing recess on a daily basis, and teachers are doing a great job of getting kids outdoors

Pavone said all the staff at Prospect are working as a team to support all students and make sure all families are engaged.

She said changes between hybrid and e-learning for students continue as more kids begin coming to the building and the schedules are working.

“It’s great to see the kids in person, but it’s also great to see all the kids via Zoom,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed popping in to see how engaged the kids are, whether in the classroom or on Zoom.”

Dr. Mark Beehler, Deputy Superintendent, said the district’s future plans include Prospect and Seneca evaluating an option for students to come to campus for four days a week instead of two.

But in order to do that, he said parents and students need to commit to sticking with either an e-learning or hybrid model.

“We’re approaching maximum capacity,” he said. “That way we can plan and fill in all the available spots so that we can reach our maximum capacity on site.”

In the high school, there have been some requests to bring in more students for greater teacher contact, Beehler said, something they expect to happen over the next couple of weeks.

Beehler said a team monitors the current COVID-19 data in the region on a daily basis, sometimes several times a day. He said there is a plan ready to move all students to 100-percent e-learning.

Holiday Valley glad to get COVID-19 rules for opening slopes

Yes, skiers must still wear masks riding up on chairlifts — and they must maintain proper social distances in lift lines.

With the lodges at halfcapacity, Eshbaugh said the resort is encouraging people to use their vehicles as their mini base lodges.

The resort doesn’t want to discourage people from using the base lodges to get bathroom breaks and quick cups of coffee or bites to eat before going back out on the slopes, Eshbaugh said.

On busy holiday weekends, however, lift tickets might need to be limited. Eshbaugh said the resort is encouraging people to go online and book their lift tickets and ski or snowboard rentals ahead of time. Eshbaugh said there are also plans for heated tents on the decks at the ski lodges to help meet demand.

“Masks will be required everywhere except when skiing down the slope,” Eshbaugh emphasized.

There will be added sanitizing of common surfaces at the resort and rental equipment when it comes back into the shop.

“Each season is different and this is no exception,” Eshbaugh said of the

“We’ve been preparing for this for a while,” Holiday Valley marketing director Jane Eshbaugh said Monday. “The governor’s announcement means we can open. We’re pretty excited.”

Holiday Valley closed in early March as the coronavirus pandemic began to be felt in Western New York. Even before it closed, the resort had reduced indoor capacity at its three lodges due to the coronavirus, Eshbaugh said.

“It’s pretty much what we expected based on our summer operations,” Eshbaugh said. “All the base lodges will be at 50% capacity.”

Skiing or snowboarding down the slopes is about the only place at the resort where a mask isn’t required.

Eshbaugh said Holiday Valley is committed to keeping the facilities safe for visitors and staff.

Instead of around 100 weddings, receptions and conferences, Holiday Valley only hosted a few small wedding ceremonies due to the restrictions on crowd size, Eshbaugh said.

“We gave people a great alternative to get outside and have some fun,” she said.

As one season winds down at Holiday Valley, the main attraction will crank up soon.

Eshbaugh said the target for opening is Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving, weather permitting.

“We’re going to do some snowmaking testing in the next week or so to test the system,” Eshbaugh said.

“By mid-November, we hope to be making snow, depending on the weather.”

That will be good news for skiers, snowboarders and more than 1,000 Holiday Valley seasonal employees.

CONEWANGO — More canoeists and kayakers are discovering Conewango Creek and The Dredge in Western Cattaraugus County.

Fall is a particularly nice time of year as colorful trees line both The Dredge and Conewango Creek.

In 1839, the New York State Legislature looked at plans to extend the Erie Canal southward from Buffalo through Western Cattaraugus County to the Allegheny River.

While the canal never materialized, part of the plan

was resurrected in 1896 to protect areas along the meandering Conewango Creek from constant flooding.

The Dredge, as it became known, opened up 20,000 acres of farmland on both sides of the north-south waterway that cut off Conewango Creek.

The lack of maintenance over decades saw the banks erode, trees fall in and dam the water and flooding all over again.

In the mid-1990s, citizen groups began raising money and clearing The

Dredge from Cherry Creek to Waterboro, completing the task in 2003. The midsection of that effort lies in the Town of Conewango.

Built for drainage, it has become a prime recreational asset, attracting fishermen, canoes and kayaks. oat launch is the DEC site on Goodwin’s Landing Road off Lower Bush Road in the town of Conewango.

Go north from the launch and you are on The Dredge.

If you paddle (or row) south, you’ll hit Conewango Creek.

SALAMANCA — Two Salamanca men face drugrelated charges following the execution of a search warrant Tuesday afternoon.

Jesse Bartlett Jr., 30, and Anthony Piscitelli, 28, of 230 Clinton St., were arrested at 2:30 p.m. after a search of their residence was conducted by members of the Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force (SRDTF).

Bartlett was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony; fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony; and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor. Bartlett was also charged with failure to register as a sex offender,

a class D felony. Piscitelli’s charges were not specified.

Additional charges are pending.

According to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, the charges stem from an investigation into illegal sales of fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine and other illegal narcotics.

During the search, detectives allegedly discovered multiple bags of fentanyl, crystal meth, fentanyl patches, suboxone, prescription pills, scales, packaging materials and approximately $6,000 in cash.

Bartlett and Piscitelli were arraigned and remanded to Cattaraugus County Jail, where they were held without bail.

The SRDTF was assisted by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s patrol and criminal bureau divisions and the Salamanca Police Department.

Ghouls, ghosts and goblins lurk in State Park Avenue Halloween display

SALAMANCA — Creepy, crawly and spooky is the description that will likely come to mind when people visit Mike Madison’s amazing Halloween display at 359 State Park Ave. Ghouls, ghosts and goblins are lurking about in anticipation of Halloween night, and they are waiting to scare the “bejeebers” out of anyone who visits after dark.

The spectacular display located on Madison’s front lawn is packed full of animated and motionactivated figures looking for freaky fun when night falls. There are skeletons in interesting poses everywhere.

A humorous skeleton couple sits at a table enjoying some drinks and rats — yes, rats. There are skeletons peeping in the windows, a sinking ship with a pirate skeleton, one crawling out from under headstones and two driving a stagecoach. Madison said the scariest figure is probably the new skeleton on the deck wearing a hat.

“The animated figures are pretty neat, but you gotta’ see them at night to appreciate them,” he said.

“When this guy waves his arm in the dark it’ll scare the crap out of you.”

Madison said he adds to his giant Halloween display every year to make it bigger and better. He makes the wooden signs by hand and many of the special features including a nearly life-size stagecoach that he recently completed.

“The stagecoach is new this year and my favorite,” he said. “A friend of mine, Stan Carlson, found me some pictures of stagecoaches to use as a guide. He brought his four-year-old grandson over and we put him in the stagecoach, then took pictures of him sitting inside.”

Sitting on top of the coach is a pair of skeletons driving a team of skeleton horses. A skeleton dog is along for the ride with a skeleton horse following behind. Madison is currently working on a building that will be a saloon to go with the stagecoach. He hopes it will be part of his Halloween display next year.

“I do it for the kids, but we don’t get very many up here because we are not in the residential area,” he said.

“Unless somebody tells

them to continue up State Park Avenue, they miss it.”

According to Madison, several people have contributed to his displays by donating or lending him holiday-themed items including local residents Carlson and Tim Jackson.

“Stan is the one who got me more into Halloween. He does a lot over on Lincoln where he lives,” he said. “Tim gets a lot of stuff donated to him. He told me he wanted to ‘Pay It Forward’ so he gave me two or three totes full of little Halloween stuff.”

Madison said his son, Aaron, helps him put up his holiday decorations that take the better part of a day to accomplish. He said anything Halloween comes right down the day after, but he leaves some of the fall items up while he’s transitioning to Christmas decorations.

“Wait until Christmas comes; this ain’t nothin’,” he said.

Madison said it’s a nice compliment to him when people stop and take pictures of his outdoor holiday displays that he’s been putting up most of his life. He said it’s especially rewarding to see the look on

the kid’s faces as they ride by on the school bus.

“I enjoy doing it and it’s pretty neat to do it,” he said.

“Seeing other people enjoy what I’ve created makes it worthwhile.”

Originally from Olean, Madison said he lived in Celeron for a time before moving to Salamanca. He said he used to decorate his yard in Celeron and won the majority of contests there every year.

His wife, Marcia Parker, grew up in the house on State Park Avenue that has been in her family since her grandparents had it built.

In the six years they have resided there he has built a garage, a shed, a big deck on the front of the house and a pergola out in the backyard. Their spacious yard is filled with beautiful landscaping, complete with several water features built

by Madison himself.

A United States Army veteran and retired auto body technician, he enjoys restoring classic and antique vehicles. He is currently working on several vintage cars and a truck.

Seneca Gaming Corporation recently announced its selection of officers for the company’s board of directors.

Dr. Lori V. Quigley, a graduate of St. Bonaventure University, was elected chair of the board. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the National Indian Education Association and on the board of the YWCA-WNY. In addition to her role with the Seneca Gaming board, she serves as Assistant to the Provost for Graduate Programs at Niagara University.

She earned her master’s degree and doctorate from Fordham University.

Klint Nephew, vice chair,

is serving his second threeyear term on the board.

He was chairman of the Seneca Gaming Authority from 2007-12 and had worked within the casino regulatory operation from 2003-12.

He graduated from St. Bonaventure and lives with his family on the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory.

Jonathan Zurek, treasurer, previously worked at Seneca Gaming for eight years in the company’s entertainment department.

He earned his dual

bachelor’s degree in music business/music production and engineering from Berklee College of Music and his MBA in finance and strategic management from St. Bonaventure. He also holds the position of executive director for the Seneca Nation Economic Development Company.

Brandy Lombardo,

corporate secretary, is a “day one” employee with Seneca Gaming, most recently holding the position of director of recruitment, before leaving the company in 2017.

She is the owner of a deli and craft beer store in Angola on the Lake. She attended the University at Buffalo.
