Silver CreekIrving Heritage Fund Awards Grants DUNKIRK, NY – The Silver Creek-Irving Heritage Fund (SCIHF) recently awarded community grants to two local organizations.

Anderson Lee-Library received a $3,400 grant to purchase approximately 250 new books to update the Junior Nonfiction book collection. A $600 grant was awarded to the Village of Silver Creek to support the 2022 Music in the Park concert series. The 6-concert music series will begin on June 14, 2022.

The SCIHF, a Community Donor Advised Fund of the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, provides grants to support new community initiatives, leadership development, and other charitable programs that address the most pressing issues within the Silver Creek-Irving community. Their mo o is “Remembering Our Past – Securing Our Future.” As an endowed fund, the SCHIF will continue to make grants in perpetuity. The fund was established by community residents and others interested in enhancing the Silver Creek-Irving community.

Contributions may be made to the fund in any amount and at any time. The deadline to submit applications for grants from the SCIHF is September 20 of each year.

Opera House Cinema Series Presents Dear Evan Hansen FREDONIA – The next fi lm in the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center Cinema Series is the feature fi lm adaptation of the Broadway blockbuster “Dear Evan Hansen.” It will be screened this Sat., Nov. 13, and Tues., Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. Thanks to an anonymous donor, the fi rst 20 SUNY Fredonia students a ending the Saturday screening will be given free admission.

Upcoming COVID-19 Pediatric and General Vaccination Clinics

Indigenous cancer researcher to give campus presentation FREDONIA – Native American Heritage Month at SUNY Fredonia will feature an address, “Restoring Educational Balance in Pandemic Times using an Indigenous Framework,” by Associate Professor of Oncology Rodney C. Haring, who is director of the Center for Indigenous Cancer Research (CICR) at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The talk is slated for the Garden at Reed on Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 1 to 2 p.m., at Reed Library on campus.

An enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians, Beaver Clan, Dr. Haring also serves in the Office of

Community Outreach and Engagement and the Department of Cancer Prevention & Control, both at Roswell.

He applies the traditions and values of the Seneca and Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people to his work.

After graduate school, Haring embarked on a 15-year career as a social worker, serving indigenous communities on health and disparities issues. He has a Ph.D. in Social Work/Social Welfare and a M.S.W., both from the University at Buffalo.

CICR was established at Roswell in 2020 to focus on reducing cancer’s impact on

indigenous communities in North America and elsewhere. Indigenous communities face some of the greatest cancer health disparities, higher mortality rates and persistent challenges in health equity.

During the month, the library will host displays that recognize Native American graduates of Fredonia Normal School and include Holland Land Company documents, cultural artwork and methods and resources for genealogy research.

Haring’s presentation is free and open to the public.

MAYVILLE, NY – The Chautauqua County Health Department announces several upcoming COVID-19 vaccination clinics. “After rigorous review, scientists and medical experts have deemed COVID-19 vaccination safe and effective for everyone 5 years of age and older,” said Christine Schuyler, County Public Health Director. “Vaccination is the best way to protect our children, friends, and families from COVID-19 infection, and the potentially severe disease, disability and death that the infection can lead to.”

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has now been authorized for emergency use for children ages 5-11 in a two-dose series. The vaccine for this age group has been formulated specifically for this age group and is a much lower dosage than that of the vaccine approved for those 12 and up. Understanding that many parents are eagerly seeking vaccination for this age group, three large regional clinics are planned for November and December that will target this specific population. Parents may also contact their pediatrician, family health care provider, or pharmacist to inquire about the vaccine. A list of pharmacies that provide the vaccine to this population will be maintained on the County website, chqgov. com, and updated as we become aware of any changes.

Clinics for Children Ages 5-11 Clinics listed in this section are only for children ages 5-11, and only the pediatric Pfizer vaccine will be offered. First, second, and third doses, as well as booster shots will be provided to any eligible persons at the time of the clinic. Pfizer is available to anyone ages 12 and up; Moderna is available to anyone ages 18 and up; Johnson & Johnson is available to anyone ages 18 and up.

Booster guidance was issued by the FDA and CDC late last week. For individuals who received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 Vaccines, the CDC issued recommendations for a single booster dose six months or more after initial series for the following individuals: Age 65 years of age and older Age 18 and older who live in long-term care settings Age 18 and older who have underlying medical conditions Age 18 and older who work or live in high-risk settings The CDC has also issued recommendations for a single booster dose for those individuals who previously received a primary dose of the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine, at least two months after the administration of the first dose.

The booster dose should be given using the same vaccine manufacturer that the person received for the primary series. If the same product used for the primary series is no longer available, or a different COVID-19 vaccine is desired, any FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine can be used for the booster dose, according to FDA and CDC guidance.

The FDA and CDC continue to recommend a third dose of mRNA vaccine (Pfi zer/ BioN Tech/Com i rnaty or Moderna) for people with immunocompromising conditions.

Residents who have questions about their individual health and whether a vaccine is recommended for them, specifically, may reach out to their healthcare providers in advance of clinic registration.

Westfield-Barcelona Community Focuses on Holidays A number of community organizations from the Westfield area have come together to organize the Let There Be Light Parade, Saturday, November 20 at 4:30pm. Master various meeting applications by downloading necessary software in advance so that technical difficulties will not derail the process. The interviewer sees only your background, so utilize a paper or whiteboard in front of you with notes or talking points.

Goal met with over 60 percent of SUNY Fredonia students voting in ’20 election FREDONIA – SUNY Fredonia students were squarely on board with the record numbers of Americans who voted in last year’s presidential election.

Just over 60 percent of all Fredonia students – a goal set by the campus’ American Democracy Project – voted in the 2020 general election, according to the Institute for Democracy & Higher Education’s National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement (NSLVE) study compiled at Tufts University.

young people participate in civic life and maintain a commitment to political engagement over the long term,” said ADP Chair Angela McGowan-Kirsch. “Student political engagement was important during the 2020 election season. If students had chosen to sit out last year’s election, the decision would have had serious effects on the outcome of the election.”

Of nearly 3,200 students who were registered, 2,327 actually voted – a hefty increase of 641 from 2016, when fewer than 950 students went to the polls.

Fredonia students raised their voter registration rate to 82.7 percent, compared to 75 percent in 2016. The vot-

ing rate among registered students was 73 percent in 2020, a noteworthy jump from 51 percent in 2016.

“We’re proud of our students for being committed to exercising their right to vote despite all the hurdles placed before them due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s important that we keep this momentum as we enter the mid-term election season,” added Dr. McGowan-Kirsch, an assistant professor of Communication.

Even with 2020s voting surge, Fredonia lagged slightly below the 66 percent average student voting rate at similar institutions, according to the NSLVE study. College and university students participated in

record-breaking numbers in the 2020 election. The average institutional voting rate was 53 percent in 2016.

The Fredonia rate was in line with the national rate of 6 of every 10 people of voting age who went to the polls, according to a preliminary Pew Research Center analysis.

“ADP wants to thank the Fredonia Democracy Initiative and the League of Women Voters Chautauqua County for helping us register students to vote,” McGowan-Kirsch said. “Thank you to everyone, including faculty, staff, and students, who helped ADP reach its goal of having over 60 percent of Fredonia students vote in the 2020 election.

Transcripts and Exhibits From Independent Investigation Into Former Governor Cuomo Begin to Be Released NEW YORK – The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) today began the rolling release of transcripts and corresponding exhibits from its investigation into sexual harassment allegations against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. On August 3, 2021, after nearly five months of investigating, the independent investigators appointed by New York Attorney General Letitia James — led by Joon H. Kim and Anne L. Clark — released their report concerning the multiple allegations of sexual harassment by Cuomo. Following the release of the report, multiple district attorneys asked that the OAG refrain from publicly releasing transcripts and other evidence so that their offices could first investigate and determine whether to file criminal

charges against Cuomo.

However, following the filing of a criminal complaint against Cuomo on October 28, 2021 in Albany County, the Albany County District Attorney’s Office informed the OAG that it would begin releasing evidence to Cuomo to comply with New York state’s discovery laws. These laws state that once someone is charged with a crime they must be furnished transcripts and other evidence in their case. As these materials are now being released by the Albany County District Attorney’s office — and in an effort to provide full transparency to the people of New York — the OAG has informed local district attorneys that it will immediately begin releasing, on a rolling basis, all transcripts and corresponding exhibits compiled during

the investigation, pending redactions to protect the privacy of individuals, as appropriate.

The investigation was conducted after, on March 1, 2021, the Executive Chamber made a referral, pursuant to New York Executive Law Section 63(8), for Attorney General James to select independent lawyers to investigate “allegations of and circumstances surrounding sexual harassment claims made against the governor.” Kim and Clark were chosen to lead the investigation on March 8, 2021.
