What’s new for Summer 2021 in the Chautauqua Lake Erie Region Chautauqua County is preparing for a great summer season. Many a raction sand experiences are reopening and are creating new and exciting ways for you to enjoy Chautauqua this summer.

Lake Erie Wine Country is hosting a new event— “Red, White, & BBQ”.

Lake Erie Wine Country is home to 23 wineries through Chautauqua County and Pennyslvania.

This summer they are introducing a new event featuring patriotic pairings and summer favorites to help you impress your guests at your upcoming Fourth of July gathering. Wineries will offer a selection of seasonal fruits and produces as well a favorite BBQ main and side dishes that will be paired with specific wines from your favorite local wineries. This event will occur Friday through Monday on two weekends in the month of June. A endees can choose any of the eight days for a full day of fun,

memories, and delicious food and wine.

EVENT DATE AND HOURS: Friday through Monday, June 18-21: 10a.m. - 5p.m. each day.

Chautauqua Institution introduces new lakeside dining — “The A Truck and 3 Taps” As part of a new initiative to enhance outdoor experience for the Chautauqua Institution’s in-person 2021 season, the Pier Building is being transformed into a casual lakeside dining space named 3 Taps. Both indoor and outdoor seating will be available as well as patio seating, Adirondack chairs and foreparts. In addition, patrons may enjoy picnic seating in Miller Park or bring their own chair to the adjacent Children’s Beach.

Turning Brain Drain into Brain Gain

County Update for 2021 DPF Highway and Bridge Work FALCONER— Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel, Jr. and Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities Director Brad Bentley are providing an update on the 2021 Department of Public Facilities (DPF) highway and bridge work.

This year’s program makes use of County forces, contracted labor, and shared ser-

vices. Work includes bridge/ culvert replacements and rehabilitation, drainage projects, general maintenance, surface treating projects, and paving. Funding comes from a variety of sources, including the New York State Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), PAVE-NY, Extreme Weather Recovery (EWR), the Federal government and

“Thanks to the hard work of New York State Senator George Borrello and Assemblyman Andy Goodell, Chautauqua County will receive an additional $2.1 million this year to invest in sustaining our highways and bridges,” said Wendel. “This and other investments in our

Many different factors influence where people choose to live. A lot remain where they were born and raised throughout their entire lives. Some fi nd their dream jobs in their hometowns. Others stay simply because being near family is more important to them than anything else. Some think they cannot fi nancially afford to move. Others are fearful of the unknown and unfamiliar.

Those choosing to relocate also do so for many different reasons, but there are some themes. Some seek things a community can’t change, like different weather. Others want a lower cost of living or a higher standard of living. Some are following a romantic partner or seeking a new one. Some want to get away from family or friends they think are bad influences. Some want to experience life independently and don’t think they can do that without moving away. Others feel like they’re stuck in a rut, seek adventure, or simply want a change of scenery.

However, the vast majority, many of whom are among the brightest, leave for be­er job opportunities.

The most common periods of life when people move are soon a er significant life events, like a graduation or the end or beginning of a romantic relationship. Some move to further their education elsewhere or to join the military. Others decide to accept a job in a different community, o en because they feel their career prospects are too limited at home.

Communities wanting to continue to grow and improve must convince more high achievers to stay and a­ ract more highly skilled, well-educated people to join the community. That’s because communities with many smart go-ge­ers create a higher quality of life for everyone living there.

Communities need more capable and creative types that improve established businesses and industries while also starting exciting new ventures.

Consequently, if they want to a­ ract more of the best and brightest, communities have to identify and promote all of the things their community offers that make people happy.

While people want different things, generally, most seek an excellent living environment, a social network, and work-life balance. That includes things like a reasonable commute, a pleasant work environment, or the ability to work from home.

They expect to fi nd a suitable rental to live in or to be able to purchase a home. They require access to fi rst-rate health care. Many people want good schools for their kids and themselves. Some need reliable child care.

People also want plentiful entertainment and recreational options. Other things, like low crime rates, may also factor in their decision-making process, but people expect high quality and affordability in all things.

Chautauqua County features everything needed to prevent the loss of our best people and to draw more like them to this area.

Our overall cost of living is low. The county has world-class educational opportunities, museums, music, and arts venues. Plenty of professional sports teams play nearby.

Options for outdoor activities, including water sports, skiing, hiking, hunting, fi shing, and camping abound. The area features a diverse array of restaurants serving fabulous cuisine in all price ranges. Fresh locally produced foods and beverages are available at every turn. There are also thriving businesses here with well-paying jobs and chances for advancement.

It’s time to turn Brain Drain into Brain Gain.

NCCF Presents the Footprints Award during 35th Annual Meeting and Reception

t On Monday, June 14th, Northern - Chautauqua Community Foundation - was thrilled to present the George B. e Weaver Jr. Footprints Award to Kathy - and Peter George. The Georges accepted o the award during the Annual Meeting, . which was held virtually via Zoom.

Following the meeting, a reception was held at the RED House in Cassadaga, during which Board President Rick Ketcham presented a gi¯ to the Georges and a certificate commemorating the award. The video features their friends and colleagues and highlights their philanthropy and community service.

The Annual Meeting serves as a review of the previous year’s operations. In 2020, NCCF received 937 individual gi¯ s, a total of $1.7 million in contributions. 16 new funds were established throughout the year.

NCCF invested $1.3 million back into the community in 2020, benefi ing 102 individual organizations. 287 scholarships were given out to local students in northern Chautauqua County.

Wild 5K continued from 1

Opera House Completion of Grant Projects and Lights Up New Marquee FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center today marked the completion of several major improvement projects and lit up the new marquee over the theatre’s entrance on Temple Street.

The theatre held a special news conference in which it noted completion of four improvement projects paid for by an Empire State Development (ESD) Smart Growth grant from New York state to the Village of Fredonia. The grant, to date, has funded $841,000 in Opera House projects, enabling the theatre to: -Restore 67 windows in the theatre, reconstructing the sashes and replacing the glass with ¼-inch thick laminated glass, improving the windows’ energy efficiency and sound insulation. Along with the window replacement came the installation of all new window treatments inside the theatre; -Upgrade and improve the Opera House HVAC system, including the installation of a new, larger chiller; -Remodel and expand the public restrooms in the basement of the Village Hall, bringing them fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) code for wheelchair access. In addition, motion-controlled LED lighting was installed to increase energy efficiency; and -Install the new two-piece marquee over the theatre’s Temple Street entrance.

General architect for the projects was Trautman Associates. Primary contractors included: Montante Construction, BECC Electric, Ciancio Mechanical and DV Brown Associates.

community economic development specialist with the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, and Travis Gordon, principal with Urban Vantage, respectively, wrote the initial grant application and coordinated its implementation with the State. Gordon says “The Opera House is one of Fredonia’s best kept secrets, and part of what makes downtown Fredonia so unique. This grant has helped us share this secret with community members by allowing us to design and construct a marquee that also preserves the historic integrity of the building. The grant also helped pay for interior improvements that will help improve the viewing experience for visitors to the Opera House for years to come. We are thankful to have had the opportunity to work on such a transformative project, and we look forward to going to performances in the new and improved Opera House.”

Opera House Board Vice President Sheila Hahn expressed the Opera House’s appreciation to the Village for applying for the grant four years ago, and to the state for making the funds available in the midst of a pandemic. “We are grateful to former Mayor Athanasia Landis, in whose tenure the grant application was initially submi¬ed, and to current Mayor Doug Essek and Village Trustees, who allowed the projects to move forward and found solutions when delays in funding disbursement nearly brought the projects to a halt.”

demic became an all-consuming fi nancial drain on the State.”

Fredonia Mayor Doug Essek notes “it has been a pleasure to be part of this restoration project that has brought back this historic landmark to its original status.”

As part of today’s event, the theatre illuminated the new marquee, which Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis says will go a long way in helping create awareness of and exposure for the Opera House. “In my 16 years at the Opera House, I think I must have heard someone express surprise that Village Hall has a theatre in it at least every other month,” notes Davis.

“Not only does this marquee announce loud and clear ‘theatre here,’ it also promotes in a very cost-effective way the venue’s coming events.”

Longtime Opera House supporter Dick Gilman, who was crucial to the venue’s restoration three decades ago and was the very fi rst president of its Board, echoed Davis’ hopes for greater awareness of the theatre. He spoke of the vision held by the Fredonia Preservation

Society as it started the restoration in 1985, noting that much of what the Preservation Society had envisioned for the theatre has been accomplished. “Now, it’s up to a new generation to refi ne that vision for the coming decades. Perhaps that the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center will become one of the ‘destination sites’ for arts and culture in Western New York!”

Davis notes that the next step in continued improvements to the theatre is replacing the “uncomfortable seats,” which are a source of patron complaints. He says it’s possible this can be accomplished with some remaining funds from the ESDF grant.

“We’re looking at replacing the seats with wider, more comfortable seating with the limited amount of funds that remain in the grant. This was the next highest priority project listed in the initial application.”

The Opera House plans to reopen to the public on July 17 for movies and in September for live performances. Coming events, Davis notes, “can be seen on the marquee!”

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa. You can enjoy the six miles of trails on the 600-acre nature preserve from dawn to dusk daily.

The Nature Center building includes the Blue Heron Gi£ Shop, live animals, and the winning photographs from the 2020 Nature Photography Contest. Visitors are welcome Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.

The Chamber Golf Tournament is back in August Once again this year the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce is delighted to present its annual Golf Tournament at Peek’n Peak Resort in Clymer. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 11am on August 19. The championship caliber part 72 course at Peek’n Peak has been home to numerous pro golf events over the years and it does not disappoint any avid golfer.

JAMESTOWN— The Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Development encourages applications for the 2022 3% Tourism Product Development Grant Program. Interested groups or organizations have until October 1, 2021 to submit applications.

Applications are available online at h ps://bit.ly/ CHQTourismGrants. Hard copies of the application are also available at the offices of the Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Development located at 201 West Third Street, Suite 115, in Jamestown, N.Y., during normal business hours.

The Tourism Product Development Grant Program is funded through the County’s 5% occupancy or “bed tax” for the rental of lodging units within the County. Three-fi hs (3%) of the revenue that is generated from this tax is utilized to increase tourism, conventions, trade shows, special events, and other directly related or supporting activities including businesses in the county. The two-fi hs (2%) occupancy tax is utilized solely for the enhancement and protection of lakes and streams in Chautauqua County. A portion of the 3% occupancy tax is intended to provide grants for projects that will

achieve and/or support special tourism product and event development initiatives.

Through this grant program, the County seeks to assist in catalyzing opportunities that promote or support the development of specific themes or significant events and a ractions that enhance the level of visitor experience, and ultimately the number of visitors, to the County.

“This program has been very successful in helping develop and enhance our tourism and hospitality sectors here in Chautauqua County,” said Mark Geise, Deputy County Executive for Economic Development.

“As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to supporting the next round of projects, and assisting our tourism destinations advance transformative and catalytic programs and initiatives for improving our tourism infrastructure and driving visitation to our county.”

Programs and initiatives should help create destination awareness of Chautauqua County as a place to visit and/or improve the likelihood of repeat visits to the area. A key concern for the future of Chautauqua County’s tourism industry is to create and promote products

and experiences that will attract more visitors, particularly for overnight visits and in the pre- and post-summer seasons.

Grant funds are not intended for facility maintenance or long-term operational costs; they are intended to be developmental in nature.

“Chautauqua County already has incredible tourism a ractions; however, we continually seek to develop and improve upon our offerings to promote new and repeat visitations,” said Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel. “We encourage applications that promote new or enhanced a ractions, unique events, and projects that support tourism aspects of the County Comprehensive Plan, County Greenways Plan, and the recently completed Economic Development Strategic Plan.”

Applications for the 3% Tourism Product Development Grant Program may be submi ed by various groups and organizations, including: not-for-profits, governments, businesses/corporations, public or private schools, and all landowners of Chautauqua County.
