Early Morning Bird Walks at Audubon First Week in May

Borrello wants to protect Lake Erie from wind turbines ALBANY — To protect the ecology of freshwater lakes, clean water supplies and national security, state Sen. George Borrello has introduced legislation to place a moratorium on the building or placing of permanent or semi-permanent wind turbines in bodies of freshwater in New York state.

“I dra ed this legislation to protect our freshwater lakes from becoming industrialized by massive wind turbines,” Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, said. “Our greatest natural and environmental resource is our freshwater lakes. These lakes, and the communities that cherish them, should not be sacrificed on the altar of the boondoggle green energy agenda.”

The senator said that in their zeal to appease radical special interests, and those who profit personally and politically, Gov. Cuomo Cuomo and his allies in the Assembly and Senate would allow the installation of massive 460-foot industrial wind turbines in the waters of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario without considering the impact on the environment.

With a different trail each day, both experienced and novice birders have a wide variety of habitats to search for their feathered friends. The schedule is:Monday, May 3: Pond edges and Big Pond; Tuesday, May 4: Shrubby wetlands and ponds; Wednesday, May 5: Backyard Birding; Thursday, May 6: Fields and fencerow; Friday, May 7: Young forest and pond edges.

Face coverings are required for outdoor programs during which participants cannot maintain six feet of distance between family groups; have a face covering available. Bring a set of binoculars if you have them, or Audubon has some you can borrow.

Mercy Virtual is a subsidiary of the St. Louis-based health system Mercy. It is a leader in bringing telehealth solutions to hospitals around the country. Telemetry is a monitoring service. Data is recorded and transmi ed from remote sources to an IT system in a different site. Sensors at the remote source measure physical or electrical data, which is transmi ed over a wireless and/or wired medium. Data is displayed and analyzed at the remote site.

Surkala explained, “Through telemetry, some WMH patients have monitors that are connected to specialized physicians in Pi sburgh. When the monitors sense changes in a patient’s respiration, blood pressure, or cardiac state,

a ‘doorbell’ in the patient’s room alerts hospital staff.

One benefit of the use of telemetry is that patients can remain close to home for a continuity of care and also so that their family members are able to visit with them.”

Surkala briefly noted three other updates on WMH services. The fi rst is the urology program, which will start in May. A physician from Erie will be at WMH on three Fridays of each month.

The second service is the return of the ophthalmology program, with its new clinic expected to be open in July.

Lastly, Surkala encouraged individuals who are eligible to come to WMH to receive at no charge the COVID-19 vaccine. She said, “Here at WMH we are currently administering the Moderna vaccine to those of the ages 18 and above. We are not requiring online registration, and we are taking registrations over the phone.”

The senator also cited evidence that suggests wind pa erns generated by turbines also have the potential to spread pools of toxic algae through larger portions of Lake Erie, and the constant vibration from wind turbines will negatively impact commercial and recreational fi shing as well as threatening the future of our world-class fi sheries.

Borrello also noted that the Department of Homeland Security has invested millions in high-tech radar systems to protect New York’s border along Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

“These systems are designed to detect drug smugglers, human traffickers, terrorists and others a empting to enter our country illegally,” he said.

“The radar ‘shadow’ created by industrial wind turbines will undermine the reliability of this important national security system and may render it useless.”

Borrello said his legislation is also designed to protect lakeshore communities from being abused and steamrolled into accepting industrial wind farms off their shores they don’t want or need.

“These projects won’t benefit the communities where they would be located in any way, they will only harm them,” he said. “Upstate already has 88% zero-emission electricity generation. We are already green. The industrialization of our lakes is designed to benefit the New York City area, where more than 70% of the electricity is generated from fossil fuels.”

Borrello said the Accelerated Renewable Energy Growth and Community Benefit Act, which he voted against, works to silence local communities opposed to these industrial wind proj-

ects.

“I will not allow the governor and his radical supporters to destroy our beautiful lakes, quality of life and economy to support a false

narrative that will do nothing to truly address climate change,” he said. “New Yorkers deserve be er than this crony capitalism disguised as environmental policy.”

Roger Tory Peterson’s Field Guide Turns 87 This Week – Roger Tory Peterson’s fi rst field guide was published 87 years ago this week and revolutionized birdwatching.

Born and raised in Jamestown, NY, Roger Tory Peterson spent his entire career helping people to see and appreciate nature. In his 87 years, his greatest single contribution was the creation of the modern field guide.

Old or new, grab your guide and come join us every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. for a free walk through the Peterson Preserve – our 27-acre nature sanctuary.

And don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 29, when RTPI reopens its museum following a six month restoration. “RTPI is the living embodiment of Roger’s field guide,” Pearson stated.
